DROPPED MY LAPTOP?????!!!!!!!!!!!

I just dropped my laptop, what on earth can I do?????
It's still under warranty but that won't cover it will it? the screen is cracked, but the front screen isn't, it's the bit inside that's all shattered. I don't know what to do, can you get it replaced or would it just be cheaper to buy a new laptop? Please help!

Unless you bought the accidental damage insurance the repair is going to be at your expense I am sorry to say. The first thing is to assess the extent of the damage. Hook the laptop to an external monitor. You can use it that way like a desktop computer but we need to see if it boots up and runs OK or if you damaged more than the screen. We also need your model number to figure out what kind of screen you have. Laptop screens have come way down in price. If you are  lucky you can get one for around $100. The screen replacement is not very hard in most cases and there are several utube videos showing exactly how to do it. Post back and we can help get you through this trauma.

  • I dropped my laptop and now the screen is in yellow tint

    Hi,
I recently dropped my laptop and turned it on to find that the screen is in yellow tint.
Will Toshiba be able to replace my screen?

Of course they can do this. I can just imagine that you must wait few days because they must order new parts.

  • HP PAvilion - Wont Start After Dropping The Laptop

I argued with my parent who took and dropped my laptop on the coffee table. I opened the lid to see my desktop on a resolution of 800x600 (it was magnified in a way) with no icons anything, just the cursor and nothing responding. I force booted the laptop by pressing its power botton
After that i tried both normal and diagnostic/proper setup.
In proper setup it would prepare the files them a black screen would pop up and do nothing
On a normal boot, the gui boot would be delayed by 30 seconds and would be stuck at it
I restored to my previous, clean booted stated by using my Acronis CD, fixed it but now after 18 hours of staying away from my laptop which I placed on sleep after I checked it for its functions, has the same issue with booting but Acronis wont work this time
I fear that my parent my have da,aged the new 500gb HDD that i installed 1 month ago or somehow ruined my operating system but #1 seems like the right answer since I was able to restore my laptop, but now I cant.
    Please help.
I may open my laptop's back/under to check the HDD, might provide pics if i do so

    Hi there @Arszilla
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your computer has been dropped, and now it is not working properly.  From how you describe it, it does seem like the drive may be damaged.  Since you have already reinstalled a backup image you had to this drive, what you may want to try to isolate whether the problem is the hard drive or potential damage to the system board or something else from the drop, you could try using a different hard drive. Presumably you still have the drive that you previously replaced.
Try installing it, and see if the unit boots properly. If not, it would most likely mean the problem is with the other hardware on on the computer.
Let me know how that works.

  • I dropped my laptop!

help! i dropped my laptop while it was running. at first it did not recognize the airport card. i turned off the computer, let it cool, checked the card to see if the antenna was loose. it wasn't. i put battery back, rebooted. now it recognizes the card and the network from our airport extreme base station. but the laptop keeps crashing, saying Mac OS X restarted after stopping unexpectedly, something like that. how can i determine what is wrong if that keeps happening? we are clueless non-techy folks in our house. thanks.

thanks for those links. i think that the kernel panic is probably from something being out of whack from the drop. here is what the panic log on my system shows. do you or anyone else know how to decipher what they mean?:

if i dropped my laptop and it caused a dent can i pay to get fixed?

It's an expsenive fix if it works alright as is.  A bottom case will be at least a couple of hundred dollars, and then the labor to take everything out of your case and install it in a new one.  Such a repair, in parts and labor could easily add up to $400-$600 at a competent Apple Authorized repair center.

  • Dropped My Laptop - Which Tests Should I Run To Assure It's Fine?

Unfortunately I placed my one + a half year old 15" MacBook Pro laptop  on a new tilted notebook cooler (that has no grip), & sat them both  on my computer chair while in use. To my recollection I only had the  YouTube homepage open without any video playing, and Dropbox was  downloading some small photo files to my laptop intermittently (that I  was uploading from my iPhone at the time). I walked away and it suddenly  all fell from a height of 2 feet. When I looked they were both sitting  on the floor. The screen was in the same position I had it in (so it  likely didn't land display first), & the notebook cooler was sitting  to the left of it still connected via USB. I'm not sure that the soft  notebook cooler broke it's fall (see attached photo), but it's crazy how  it all landed flat as of it were being placed side by side on a table.  The usb cord from the cooler didn't even yank itself out at all. My room  is carpeted, but nonetheless I freaked out because it's a fairly new  MacBook Pro, with a brand new 750GB Western Digital Black series 7200rpm  sata hard drive (that I had just installed a couple months ago). The  hard drive is obviously of importance to me since it carries a lot of my  recent project/work files.
Luckily I have the original internal hard drive that initially came with  my system. It contains all of the files I would have had a couple  months back in working order. It's now in an external USB enclosure,  because I had used Carbon Copy Cloner to migrate/backup an exact image  of everything (data & OS) from my original drive, to my newer  Western Digital hard drive - prior to installing it 2 months ago.
The first thing I did was inspect my laptop on the outside. I can tell  you that surprising as it is there is absolutely no damage clear to the  human eye that I can see on the exterior body. From what I've heard the  MacBook Pro shell is actually made out of a solid piece of aluminum. The  hinge when you move the screen still feels the same as it did before  too. I have quite the computer skills background, so I opened the case  up just to give it a glace over with my magnifying glasses headset and a  flashlight. I looked at the motherboard over and over for about an hour  to double, and triple check that there was no damage to the motherboard  (ie: cracks, broken solder, bent usb port that was in use during the  fall, etc). From what I saw there was absolutely no damage to the  important parts of the laptop. I had opened up the case before, and it  looked pretty much the same... The only thing I noticed damaged, were  the 3 screw holes that hold the laptop battery in place (one is under a  black leftside sticker). Such a minor crack on each of the plastic screw  holes (on the plastic battery body, not the aluminum laptop case). They  were very minor cracks yet still in place, you'd have to look closely  to see them. Now I can't remember well, but I think the last time I  opened the case months ago they may have already been like that. & I  may have just left it as they were. If so the damage could have been  caused by over screwing at the factory. I'm not sure, but if not the  fall may have caused it. So I took the battery out and super glued the  screw holes back to the battery body properly (see attached photo). I  could not, and would not disassemble the MacBook Pro motherboard, &  other device pieces for a more thorough check over a 2 foot fall. I just  don't think it's warranted to do so, being that everything else on the  underside seems to be fine to the naked eye. I guess it would be going  overboard...
    A quick factoid:
Apparently my MacBook Pro has a feature called SMS (Sudden Motion  Sensor). The Sudden Motion Sensor is designed to detect unusually strong  vibrations, sudden changes in position, and accelerated movement. If  the sensor detects any of these, it instantly parks the hard drive heads  to help reduce the risk of damage to the hard drive in case of impact.  When the SMS senses that the computer's position is once again stable,  it unlocks the hard drive heads and returns to normal operation. In  general, SMS protection does not change hard disk performance with  regular operation.
Also my new internal Western Digital Black series hard drive  specifically states on their website to having "Rock-solid Mechanical  Architecture." With enhanced reliability features help protect the drive  and the data stored on it. As well as "NoTouch Ramp Load technology" -  The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly  less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive  protection in transit. Although I don't know if these Western Digital  features apply to normal operating hdd use while powered on, or just  when you have your laptop powered off (eg: parked head position when  shutdown).
I called Western Digital since the hard drive has a 5 year warranty  (unheard of). & I asked them if they had any software to diagnose  the drive beyond Disk Utility's simple "SMART" status info in Mountain  Lion's Mac OS X 10 (which showed up okay by the way). Anyways Western  Digital does have software to do a thorough SMART test, and surface scan  checking for Windows (which I have used before on my other pcs in the  past). But they don't have one for Mac, and he suggested I take the hard  drive out, then pop it in a pc to scan it. But I'm not even sure a pc  would recognize the disk being that it's formatted differently in  comparison to the pc standard of NTFS. I believe he said to reformat it  as NTFS, but that would defeat the purpose of a faster scanning method,  and leaving it as is.
So now what I'd like to do is use a program I found called "TechTool Pro  7." I'll install it to the original hard drive that came with my  MacBook Pro (that's now in my external usb enclosure), and use it to run  every possible scan on my MackBook Pro to make sure everything that  appears to be okay - actually is. But most importantly to run a thorough  SMART test, and surface scan on the newer internal hard drive that  experienced the fall. Since TechTook Pro 7 does have the ability to do  so on any drive. Ya, believe it or not newer Mac's don't have a surface  scan feature in the OS. Remember the external usb hard drive is an exact  1:1 image of my working MacBook Pro a couple months back. So I should  be able to boot off it, and install the program onto it. Of course I'd  be turning off my Wi-Fi during TechTool Pro 7 use, to avoid any  unrelated software updates from other programs while scanning.
I need to run a surface scan on this drive asap, and I will. I'd  appreciate it if you guys would give me general things I should do to  test all of my laptops hardware to determine if everything is alright or  not. Let me know what type of things I should use to test all of the  internal laptops hardware. Let me know what to look for... & how I  should go about using my laptop for the next month or so. I will  probably be doing tests on it every two weeks just to make sure it's  okay until Spring hits. If everything is fine then, well it should be  good for the long term - and have survived the impact well enough.
Thank You Apple Forum Users & Happy New Year
    P.s.
If anybody knows what type of drop tolerance a hard drive can take (and  survive) while in use let me know. Also I did come up with a couple of  things on Google that supposedly can help. One is Apple Diagnostics, and  the second is called Apple Hardware Test. If you Google them they'll  come up, but I have no idea if these are for desktop style Mac's only or  laptops too since they don't mention the word laptop. See here for a  quicker view:

in the future, buy this, this is what the Pros use:
for drops, accidents, spills, loss, or theft, purchase a TYPE of insurance called "inland marine insurance"
roughly $30 per year for a device(s) with 0 deductible, used same for over 20 years, same insurance the pros use on their portable devices.
very cheap, very useful insurance, most people dont know about same.

  • What's the best case for a Macbook Air for someone who *may* drop the laptop?

I see all the forums here about cases for Macbook Air, but most people seem more worried about scratches.  I am looking for the lightest case that might actually protect the Air in a fall.  Any ideas?
BTW I have been a long time PC laptop user which seem to be a bit more rugged (and thus heavy).  I have dropped my PC laptop in the past without any damage. I've bought the Macbook Air 13 which arrives this week.  I don't mind adding a little weight to the laptop to protect it in a fall...

I am also clumsy but I find Apple products exceptionally tough.
I dropped my MacBook Air with no case or anything onto concrete from like 1 meter and this is all that happened
I also dropped my iPad from a table onto the same floor and when I saw it face down I was dreading having to pick it up...it was fine however with not a mark in sight
Yes this is just the experience of 1 person however I think people are too cautious nowdays
Remember the things you read on here "I dropped my macbook and the screen shattered please help" are probably the minority - if someone dropped it and it was fine they wouldn't post here so you are getting a false sense that everyone who drops their machine ends up bad!

  • Dropped my laptop...some things work, some don't...

Hello all. Thanks in advance for any help. I have what I believe is the original macbook pro 15" aluminum model. I've had it for maybe 3 years and it's had some issues. The dvd drive hasn't worked for years, I've had to replace the logic board, keyboard, etc. Then a few months ago it started an interesting behavior where it would freeze up when I moved it. Sometimes it would be fine, but other times I'd pick it up, move to another room, sit down, and it would be completely frozen. Needless to say, it's been through a lot.
But the most recent development is what's giving me problems now. The laptop recently fell off the ironing board onto a concrete floor. It started right back up, but it's behaving strangely. At first, safari would crash immediately after opening. It said the flashplayer was causing a problem. So I shut off the flashplayer, and I got my browser working. What's puzzling me is I'm wondering if I somehow jarred RAM loose or in some other way damaged the memory? For example, I can view videos in Quicktime. But if I try to play the same file in VLC media player, VLC crashes much like safari was doing at first. I was thinking maybe VLC allocates more memory? Or if I try to run multiple applications at once, the computer becomes extremely slow and inevitably one or more will quit. Even now, typing this with only safari open, I'm getting the spinning beach ball every few lines and have to wait to continue typing.
So, I'm pretty clueless about the technical aspects of these things, but does my theory make any sense? Would it make sense for me to open it up and try to see if anything inside is out of place? (I'm certainly not worried about voiding any warranty, and I've already opened it up to put in a new keyboard.) Is it possible that the RAM could've been damaged with everything else in tact? If that were the case, could I just buy new memory but leave everything else as is? As I mentioned, I'm a bit clueless, but thanks for any help or theories.

Thanks for your input. I removed the RAM, put it back in, made sure the connections appeared tight, etc. The computer seems to be behaving in the same way. I took a look on the inside. Nothing else appears broken or dislodged.
As I mentioned in my initial post, my superdrive hasn't worked for a long time. That means the hardware test is not an option, correct?
Here's an example of the type of crash report I get. I've been opening various programs to see if they work. VLC will try to play a file for 5 seconds or so, and then crash. I noticed that the game Peggle crashes instantly. Here's the report from that crash.

  • WRT54GS wireless connection drops on laptop when wired desktop is turned on.

I've had this router for a few years now and have never had a problem.  But recently my laptop wireless connection dies when my desktop, which is connection via ethernet is turned on.  In trying to fix the problem, I've upgraded the firmware, but that didn't end up working.  I recently upgraded to vista from xp on the desktop computer, so I don't know if this is what started the problem.  I don't recall if this problem started before I upgraded.
I don't know what sort of additional information you guys would need to help diagnose the problem, so just let me know and I'll get that info for you.
    Thanks,
    Kurt

Check under Local Area Conneciton in Desktop that if there is any other connection except Local Area Connection is present ... if so then delete or disable that ...
Also check that if there is any USB connection from Modem to the Computer ....

  • Dropped laptop now cd drive not working.

Running windows 7 64 bit, product number is QJ920AV#ABA and the name is HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC.
I accidently dropped my laptop (coincedentally the day after my warranty ran out) and aside from minor scratch, nothing's different... except the cd drive doesn't work. When i put in a cd, nothing happens - nothing is detected.
Anything i can do? Reinstall drivers? Or do i have to take it to a shop?

    Hi,
Try removing and then re-connecting the optical drive - the procedure is detailed starting on Page 52 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
When the drive has been re-connected, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let windows fully load before checking if the drive works.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • Dropped Laptop and switched to Mac

I dropped my laptop and destroyed the screen. I used an external monitor and tried to start it. It didn't work. Since I use mostly apple devices (e.g. IPhone, IPad etc) and I've been wanting a mac for a long time (just needed a good reason to replace my laptop) I bought an IMac. My question is, since I can't access my old iTunes account to deauthorize it, is there a way to remotely access the account.
    Thanks

You can also contact iTunes support and ask them to deauthorize your old machine; they've done that for me (and responded very quickly) (I believe there is now a disclaimer that you must have a warranty in place to get service):

  • Dropped laptop - now warped

I recently dropped my laptop, and while everything works, it's now warped. It's kind of like sitting at a wobbly table at a restaurant...
Any idea if it's possible to buy a 'shell' that they can just load the hard drive into? Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!

Well, let us know when you get around to using the service. I always recommend them, but have never used them personally. If I needed service, I would. In fact, I almost did but it was a money issue. Didn't have the $$ to go through with the upgrade I wanted. (250GB hard drive upgrade).
It'll be good for those of us who may drop theirs or mess it up in the future, knowing $240 will save our investments.
Mine is still mint condition, so I'm good.

  • Help PLEASE-mom dropped laptop!

My mother dropped her laptop and damaged the screen, and it has a small crack in it. My brother-in-law who "does computers", told her it may be possible to buy a new screen and replace it. He also said it would be possible to hook up an external monitor thru a USB port. Is either or both possible?

Your homeowners insurance covers accidental damage.  Call them and place a claim.

  • I just bought a HP Pavilion laptop and it's already falling apart, PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi,
Im a recent grad out of uni and I thought that I'd get a laptop for work, leisure and CAD work. Also since I am moving out of home I can do video chat with my parents. So after deciding between the HP, Asus and Toshiba I conclude that HP is best value for money. At a cool $1575 AUD it certainly did not come cheap and left a hole in my wallet. It's a HP Pavilion dv6-3042tx.
So now just a few days after purchase (I bought it this Monday )it's already showing signs of break down.
    1) When I first got it a few days back the DVD/BluRay drive would eject when I push the button, but now it doesn't and it only makes a 'click' noise but still stays inside. I have to manually insert a paper click thru the hole to manually eject it - every single time. What happened here?? I call HP 'Customer Care,' the Indian call center lady said a technician will call me in 1-2hrs. It has already been more than 5.5 hours and no phone call.
    2) Also coincidently on the same day (today, right now as I type) I see purple squares on the screen. They move and leave purple shaded square artifacts on the screen. The card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 5650HD.
I am devastated, I spent so much money and this is "Thank You" I get from HP. The lady on the call center (Christine) was not helpful either.
I am willing to forget all of the annoyance at this situation if I could please get solutions for this. Even an answer from a HP representative and advice on what I can do  I would appreciate very much.
    Thanks!
PS: At this point I would like to add that I did not drop the laptop or bumped in any way. In fact it is on the same table and the same location as it was when I first booted it up. Now a few days later (I did not touch it in between. This is the 2nd time I am using the laptop having restarted it already several times and running a system restore to no avail), all of this happens.
EDIT: I would like to add that the purple squares issue does NOT happen all the time. Just sometimes. For instance as I type right now for this edit there are no purple squares at all when the windows are moved.

Your VGA is definitely corrupted and it is irreparable, so just make the HP to change your vga.
Also next time read my post on how to keep your laptop cool to avoid same issues again.
I assume your laptop was pretty hot during some time and that's the result you've got.
