DSN for ODBC (RDO) connection ?

Hello !
I have an ACCESS database on a webserver and I wish to connect Crystal Report 2008 to it.
Till now I have always used connection with DB on the same computer as CR
so "Access/Excel (DAO)" was the way I connected to my *.mdb file.
This time, with my *.mbd file on a webserver, I thought ODBC (RDO) was the appropriate option.
This requires a DSN string (embedded in a file).
I guess my DSN syntax must be wrong because "Logon failed" keeps popping out then :
HY00 : "Invalid Datasource file" (loosely translated : excuse my French) Database Vendor Code :556
CR 2008 gives this response immediately : it won't try to connect remotely with the server.
Do you think my problem is related to the DSN syntax ?
PROVIDER=MSDASQL;DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};SERVER=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;DBQ=D:\WS\abc\myDB.mdb
OR
do I opt for the wrong item in the 'Create New Connection' list ?
- ODBC (RDO)
- OLE DB (ADO)
- ACCESS/EXCEL (DAO) (only for local drives, I suppose ?)
I am stuck : I hope this will look straight forward to you.
Thanking you in advance

Hi Thib,
It won't work, WEB servers do not allow you to "Browse" their folder structures directly. You could how ever create a WEB Service to do this, it does the querying for you and then passes the data back. You'll have to search the WEB for more info on how to create a WEB Service and then check with your security guys if this is something you want to do.
Bottom line is ODBC or native or OLE DB is not going to work. And if you do open it up so you could it would be a major security hole for anyone to get to.
Other options are to create a VPN server so you can remotely connect to the server and get direct access to the table.
There are other options also, what you want to do is not doable.
You did not say why you want to do this? Add more info and someone may have a suggestion for you.
Major DB's like Oracle, MS SQL Server and others allow this to work through their clients so you may want to look at that option also.
Thank you
Don

    > I don't see it anywhere that this is relevant to SAP anyhow....
I'm sorry : I realise I opted for the wrong category.
Maybe you should have told me that  "Crystal Reports, Xcelsius and Interactive Analysis" >   "Data Connectivity - Crystal Reports"  would be a more suitable category.
Correct me if I'm wrong : Crystal Report is relevant to SAP ?

  • ODBC (RDO) Connection Information : DataBase Server ID Greyed out

    Post Author: Eany
CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
When I select the refresh option (Crystal XI) for a report which previously worked fine, I get sent to the ODBC (RDO) connection Information screen.
The first box for Server ID is greyed out.
When I go to enter the password, I get
    Login Failed
HY000 General Error : Invalid file dsn  Database Vendor Error 556.
But If I then create a new report, selecting the same dsn as was used for the report above, there is no problem.

  • Crystal Reports and ODBC (RDO) connection

    Hi,
I'm using SQL Server 2005 and Crystal Reports 2008. I connected my Crystal Report to the SQL database using an ODBC (RDO) connection. In the past I was able to add a field to a table in the database, and I was able to see the new field immediately in Crystal Reports.
Now, when I add a new field to a table in the database I'm not able to see the new field and I no longer receive updates when something changes in the database. Two questions:
1)Any idea what might be causing the disconnect between the database and my report?
2)Is ODBC (RDO) the recommended connection for what I'm trying to do?

Once you connect to your DB then click on Database and Verify database. This will update the filed list in Crystal.
OLE DB is actually a better connector to use as it has more power than ODBC.
    Thank you

  • Multiple ODBC(rdo) connections

I have a report and 5 subreports. Each connects to an oracle 10g db.
When i open the repoirt and "refresh" i have to supply the password for each db connection.
Is there anyway to hide(embed) this step when the report is opened ?
I'd really like to open the report/refresh and get latest data, without this extra step of supplying password for each.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi John,
Crystal will never keep the password, would be a major security problem if we did. Anyone could run a report and then they have full access to your database and can browse tables they should not be in.
If the subreports use a different DSN it's a new connection and for security reasons you will have to provide the password for each one.
Only way around this is when you create the connection you check on the option to use Trusted Authentication and also have the Oracle Server configured to use it also. Then when the user logged into the PC runs the report their user credentials are passed to the server and no prompts. However if that user is not a trusted user they will either get prompted for log on info or the report fails to run.

  • Informatica Workflow Manager ODBC Relational Connection for ETL in DAC

In Informatica Workflow Manager, I have created a Relational Connection of type ODBC and specified Connect String as "DSN=BIEEDW" where "BIEEDW" is the System ODBC DSN already set pointing to a SQL Server 2008 database.

Any hint in setting the Connect String for ODBC Relational Connection?

    Hi,
Let me tell you the real story:
Our server architecture consists of two servers:
Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) platform with the following installed:
    - SQL Server 2008
    - DAC 10.1.3.4.1
    - OBIEE 11g
    - BI Apps (Financial Analytics) 7.9.6.3
    - Informatica Server 9.1.0 HotFix 2
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 (32-bit) platform with the following installed:
    - Informatica Clients (i.e. Workflow Manager, Repository Manager, Designer and Workflow Monitor)
And thus the ODBC Relational Connection is configured in Informatica Client machine (Workflow Manager) which is a 32-bit platform.
    Any idea?

  • Crystal 2011 getting Logon failed IM004 error when using ODBC (RDO)

I just installed Crystal Reports 2011 on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.  Sporadically, but way too often (I would estimate about 60% of the time), when I go to set up an ODBC (RDO) connection or refresh an existing report and enter the password, I get the following error:
    Logon failed.
Details: IM004:[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_Handle_ENV failed
Other times, it just works, with no changed made.  It seems to work slightly more often when using the SQL Server driver (the one for SQL 2000) as opposed to the SQL Native Client or SQL Server Native Client 10.0 drivers.  But not often enough for that to be the solution.
I have tested this with a locally installed SQL Server (on the same machine as Crystal Reports) and remote SQL Servers, with SQL 2000, 2005 and 2008.  Same results.
I have Crystal Reports 2008 installed on the same machine and have not once had this problem.  I have tried using the same ODBC connections I already had from Crystal 2008 with Crystal 2011 and also to create new ones, same results either way.
Is this a known issue, or is there a switch/setting I need to change to make this work consistently?  I am especially puzzled by the fact that it seems random, I have not been able to find any pattern at all.

    Hi Victoria,
MS SQL Server 2008 has a client install now, the MDAC/WDAC doesn't install it as MS used to do with all of their OS's. CR also had to update the use of SQL Server 2008 to include the SQLNCLI10 client engine.
I suggest, if you have not already, install the Native 10 client from either the SQL Server CD or you can download the MSI from MS's site and only use the Native 10 driver.
MS kind of dropped ODBC and moved to OLE DB. The native client actually uses the OLE DB driver so using ODBC just puts another layer on top of OLE DB anyways. It's more convenient to use ODBC for deploying applications but it can affect performance.
Anyways, as noted, CR 2011 is still in Ramp up mode so this issue may have been tracked. If not though you can purchase a support case, if it's a bug then you'll get a refund, if it's a limitation in MS then no refund.
    There is [SP 1 for CR 2011|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100007683092011E/cr2011sp1.exe] - http://service.sap.com/sap/bc/bsp/spn/bobj_download/main.htm
Seems to be a problem with that page right now so try again later... and apply SP 1 or wait until it goes GA and test again. If it's still an issue then you can log a case.
Firefox just got updated and it's failing, IE works though...
    Thanks again

  • Delete catalog and owner info from tables on ODBC (RDO) report

    Post Author: lantek
CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
I'm creating some reports with an ODBC (RDO) connection. When creating them, chosing an existing DB is mandatory. But once finished, I want that reports to work in any DB (of course, with the same ODBC DNS name) of our customers. And the problem is that design DB info is attached to my reports, making them impossible to use with other DB's.When I enter in the "Set Datasource location" of my reports, I see that in the Properties section of my connection there is a Database entry with the name of my dessign DB. I try to delete it manually, but then an error occurs. Also, in all the entries of tables, I've this 5 rows:Table Name: xxxxx (Table name)Table Type: TablesCatalog: yyyyy (Dessign DB's name)Owner: dboOverridden qualified table name: xxxxx (Same as 1.)I know that I only need rows 1,2 and 5, because rows 3 and 4 are filled with information of my dessign DB. ¿Does anyone know how to delete the info from that rows, so my report will work with any DB? Thank you.

+[nQSError: 16023] The ODBC function has returned an error. The database may not be available, or the network may be down.+
Can you please help in fixing this issue.I am not sure of the Drivers and the descrition that I am using are correct or not.
Please let me know the process of creating the DSN for SQL server in LINUX and also how can we check the available drivers in LINUX?
    Thank You in advance,

OBIEE does all of its data retrieval from the server. Your server needs to be able to query all of the data sources that you define.
The client is irrelevant here, it's just a web browser consuming data that the BI Server returns to it.
So yes you need to define connectivity from your Linux server to your SQL Server box.
The Systems Requirements doc (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10415_01/doc/bi.1013/e10417.pdf) details DataDirect ODBC drivers that are provided for non-Widows connectivity to SQL Server

  • Problem setting up DSN for 10g ODBC driver

    Hello,
I am simply trying to install an ODBC driver for 10g. To accomplish this, I first downloaded the odbc driver for 10g 10.2.0.2.0. The Readme notes said that I need to install the odbc driver using the Oracle Universal Installer. So I got a copy of just the OUI from our DBA. I installed the OUI 10.2. Using the installer, I installed the 10.2.0.2.0 odbc driver. The Readme notes said to look for the file "products.jar", which was not available, but "products.xml" was, so I used "products.xml", and the driver installed successfully.
The next step was to set up an ODBC DSN for this driver. When I attempted to do this, the Microsoft ODBC Administrator threw this message: The setup routines for the Oracle in DEFAULT_HOME ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 127, followed by Could not load the setup of translator library.
Other threads suggested that I copy the DLLs mfc71.dll, msvcrt.dll, and msvcr71.dll from my C:\Windows\System32 directory to the directory where I installed the odbc driver (C:\orant\BIN) and to ensure that this directory path was defined under the PATH environmental variable. I followed all these instructions but to no avail - I am still having the same problem. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance!!

    Hi,
    >>could not be loaded due to system error code 127
Did you try install it on other machine ? Maybe this current machine has a DLL versions problems ...

  • Can't view a report connecting through ODBC(RDO)  to DB with InfoView (CMC)

    Environment :
    Crystal Reports machine :
    OS :
    Windows Server 2008 64-bit
    Crystal Reports Developer 2008 SP0
    Crystal Reports Server 2008
    DB Server:
    Windows Server 2003 32-bit
    SQL Server 2000 SP3
    What is going on:
All the reports connecting through ODBC (RDO) to the database server work fine in the developer interface (I can preview them) but cannot be accessed if I try to view them in InfoView / CMC ("Please wait while the document is being processed" message box doesn't go away...).
I have tried both the SQL Server driver 6.00.6001.1800 and SQL Server Native Client 10.0 2007.100.1600.22 with the same results.
PS All the reports using OLE DB work just fine, I would prefer to have the ODBC option working through the web interface because I have a few hundreds report to change otherwise ...
    Virgil Rucsandescu

Our solution is a php web application, but this is not relevant (in my opinion), and here it is why:
The php code should show the reports by using the direct links given by InfoView
    (like http://dev-web:8080/CrystalReports/viewrpt.cwr?id=801&apsuser=user&apspassword=password).
Actually in this moment these links are looking different because currently we're using C.R. 10 + C.R. Server 10, but we are planning to move to CR 2008 + CR Server 2008.
So now I am testing how these direct links do work, they're actually working perfectly till now, but only if I connect through OLEDB to the DB server (SQL Server 2000). Any attempt to do it through the 2 ODBC drivers failed until now.
And I don't want to think about changing the data source hundreds of reports (lot of them having subreports too) ...

  • How to create a DSN for Oracle Provider for OLE DB in a web server

    Dear Guys,
I am a Excel VBA developer.
My requirement is from the Excel I have to call a Stored Procedure with REF CURSOR.
Normally I am using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver for connecting Oracle DB, which is in the Server .
We have users using the Excel reports across the globe.
Sending Excel report is enough, the clients can connect DB from Excel via the DSN created in a web server.
But, I came to know that we can't access the REF CURSOR using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver and it is possible to access by using ORA OLE DB Provider.
I have installed Oracle Client in my machine and tried using ORA OLE DB Provider like below
    +con.ConnectionString = "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle.1;User ID=user_name;" & _+
    +"Password=pwd;Data Source=Oracle;"+
The Excel worked fine in my machine but when I run the same Excel in my user machine in a different country I couldn't connect to DB.
Because the user machine doesn't have Oracle Client installed. We have n number of users across the world and we can't install Oracle client individually.
So, I have the plan of creating a DSN in a web sever as I used for Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver.
But, my doubt is how can I create a DSN for accessing ORA OLE DB provider? Is there any driver for ORA OLE DB provider? or is there any alternate solution for my issue?
Can anybody help me on this ASAP?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Satz

I have created a DSN in a web server (a Public IP machine) that is mapped to a Oracle DB.
In my Excel using VBA coding, with the help of RDO object I will call the DSN in the Web server using the connection string like "DSN=ORS;UID=SDATA;PWD=SDATA;"
This is working fine and in this case the client machine doesn't need Oracle client to be installed or any TNS entry.
The user can run the Excel report by clicking a button and the click event connects the DSN in the web server (through its URL) and routes to the mapped DB and fetches the quried data.
Please note that the above DSN is created based on Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver.
But the issue is using the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver I couldnt call the SP with Ref Cursor.
When I searched in Internet I came to know using the provider oraoledb.oracle we can call SP that uses REF CURSOR.
Now my question is what is the driver name that I can use to create a DSN to make use of the provider oraoledb.oracle for calling the SP with REF CURSOR from Excel VBA coding ?
    Appreciate your prompt reply.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sathish

  • Using BV stored in the repository brings up ODBC(RDO) dialog box

    Post Author: matthewh
CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
Hi - not sure if this is the right forum - tried elsewhere on this site with no joy, and been struggling with this for 2 days now, and I really need it sorted,  so here goes:I'm trying
to get a report designed on my desktop PC with Crystal XI  connecting
to my remote server running Crystal Server XI R2 & MySQL 5.  I have
a business view created and I can access it fine via the repository, but when I go to
create the report or browse the data in the fields I get the ODBC (RDO)
dialogue box asking for a DSN!  Surely the point of the server is that it
handles all the connectivity?  I have the password stored with the
connection in the repository on the server - have I set up something
incorrectly at the server end?  I've used all bog-standard settings,
nothing fancy or different and using Enterprise authentication.  I've tried using single sign-on but couldn't get it to work.  This
is my first proper report against a data warehouse I'm building and my
first use of Crystal Server in anger, so it's possible I've missed
something. Also - is the Data Connection user name and password the Enterprise user name or the database user name?

    Hi Houffle,
You need to provide more details. For example, I cannot reproduce the behavior you describe by doing the following:
    1. Create a "minprivs" user on a 10g XE database
    2. Grant connect, resource to minprivs;
    3. Create a connection for minprivs of type=Basic with Host/Port/SID=localhost/1521/xe
    4. Connect to minprivs
    5. Create a procedure in minprivs (without any dependencies on any other schema):
    create or replace PROCEDURE secure_dml
    IS
    BEGIN
      IF TO_CHAR (SYSDATE, 'HH24:MI') NOT BETWEEN '08:00' AND '18:00'
OR TO_CHAR (SYSDATE, 'DY') IN ('SAT', 'SUN') THEN
         RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR (-20205,
              'You may only make changes during normal office hours');
      END IF;
END secure_dml;Running this procedure either normally or in debug mode works without an additional password prompt. It does not matter whether the Save Password check box was ticked or not in the New / Select Database Connection dialog.

The first issue I see is that Oracle 10.2.0.1 was never certified with DG4ODBC 11. Only 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.5 can be used as the Oracle database HS kernel requires a gateway compatibility patch and this patch is included in 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.5 Oracle database patch set.
Then another error in the trace is that for each column description you have an error:
hgopoer, line 233: got native error 0 and sqlstate HY091; message follows...
    [Microsoft][ODBC Visual FoxPro Driver]*Descriptor type out of range* {HY091}
    Exiting hgopoer, rc=0 at 2012/05/31-13:11:28
hgodscr, line 615: calling SQLColAttribute got sqlstate HY091
It seems it is not critical as DG4ODBC continues, but a more detailed analysis would require an ODBC trace.
When looking at the table description it seems the column names are all in lower letters, for example: solar. So commonly Dg4ODBC needs to quote the names

and according to the trace the FoxPro ODBC driver doesn't like these quotes and reports a syntax error.
So this explains at least why select codcen from centros@fox1 will fail. In general the Oracle database is case insensitive and translates all object names to upper case and the select it will pass to the foreign database would be similar to:
select CODCEN from CENTROS => which will fail as FoxPro is case sensitive. So the error message ORA-00904 (missing column name) is correct and the statement you need to use is:
    select "codcen" from centros@fox1;
But this might lead again to the Syntax error you got earlier => You need to check which sign (single quote, back tick, double quote) Foxpro uses to quote object names and then set the gateway parameter HS_FDS_QUOTE_IDENTIFIER accordingly.
To check which character can be used to quote column/table names you might use the Microsoft ODBc test utility which was distributed in the old MDAC 2.8:
