Dual Monitors won't sleep

hi,
i just added an older cintiq 21ux to my mac pro. the other monitor is an acer h233h.
since adding the cintiq, neither monitor will go to sleep at the set time (15min). i've tried repairing permissions during a safe boot, re-installing the cintiq driver, unplugging and plugging in the cintiq and nothings seems to work.
i've run onyx and cleaned some caches but still it persists. any ideas out there?
thanks a million!
cheers,
sean

UPDATE:
seems the screen saver comes on at the appointed time. the screen goes to sleep at the appointed time, too...only to turn back on right after going black.

  • Dual monitor freeze on sleep

    Mac OS X 10.9.5.  Current model iMac:  3.5GHh i7.  32GB main mem.  NVDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096MB.
Runs fine without a second monitor.  Sleep, both manual and timeout, works fine.  Press any key awakes.
Plug in a second monitor (2 month old 27" Thunderbolt display) all works fine until Sleep happens, both manual and timeout, and then system is hard frozen.  No wakey.  Press and hold on/off key for a long time.  Wait.  Press on/off key 3 times, reboots and all is as before.
Only solution:  Never sleep.  Turn off at night to save screen hours.

Hi! Did you ever find a solution? I just bought a 2013 iMac and have the same problem- except mine will allow a login after sleep after an initial freeze of 4-5 seconds. Dual monitors as well.

  • MBP 17" 2.8 dual core won't sleep-gets hot

my new unibody wont go to sleep these days, I close the lid and come back to find it really hot. sitting on my desk or carried in my bag, I'm scared it will do permanent damage.
doing a little search, it seems a few people are having this problem.
Apple, can you please fix this pronto!?

Meaning MacMall doesn't accept returns on Apple products. If it has a problem, like mine, you have to go to Apple to get it fixed. You can't send it back for a new one.
Update- I just erased and installed and the problems are still there. It won't sleep manually, (will by itself but then screen won't wake) it won't shutdown and it hangs at restart. Hard reboot is my only option right now because no one here seems to have a solution so I guess I'm calling Apple.

  • Dual monitors won't work independently

Using win 7 ATI Raedon 4200 card. My second monitor displays only the primary desktop back ground. Followed all setup correctly please help

Vnyga, thanks but that's not it. The geek squad said something about my monitor plug ins I told them my computer recognizes the dual setup but won't work independently. He said you can keep tweak it but he has 3 monitors an although they will learn his only remembers about 70% of the time. I'm going to try hooking it up toy TV as a monitor. I just want to use it for security cameras. I do have a DVR I could use but I normally just use that when I'm ghost hunting. I'm actually I union millwright and part time ghost hunter so I'm not to well versed in computers or the talkology but I'm learning. Anyway my laptop w win8 works just fine. But... I truly appreciate I taking the time to respond an at least offer a solution thanks so much an I apologize for running my mouth on an on. Take care V.

  • MacPro1,1 Geforce 7300 - Dual Monitor won't work

    Hi there,
I just bought a MacPro1,1 with 2xDual Xeon 2,66 GHz processors. It comes with the standard setup of HD, Memory and the Geforce 7300 GT graphic card. The Graphic card has two DVI-plugs (DVI-D & DVI-S). So far, so good.
But when I attach two monitors to the DVI-plugs the second monitor gets no signal. If I then attach the second one with a VGA cable and a DVI-to-VGA switch it works (but with a bad quality/resolution).
How can I connect both monitors to the 7300 GT using DVI? Is the card broken or do I have to get bigger graphic card?

I'm running 2 DVI monitors off a 7300 GT in a Mac Pro, so it does work in theory.
    Some ideas:
    Have you tried switching cables?
Have you tried one monitor at a time to each of the DVI ports?
If one DVI port never works with DVI, it's probably a bad card.
Also, I've found that VGA signals are not quite as good as DVI, but if you are really getting poor image quality with VGA, then there is a problem with the card, the monitor, or the cable.

  • G4 MDD dual 867 won't sleep

Sometime after the last Tiger security update, my MDD stopped sleeping. It goes black, then restarts. It does this every year or so. None of the standard fixes work: PMU reset, Cmd-Opt-p-r, disconnect USB devices, eliminate startup items. In the past, the problem went away after a few weeks, but not so far. Any suggestions?

  • T520 with dual monitors won't save resolution settings

I have a new T520 docked with a 4338 docking station.  I've connected 2 Lenovo L1940p LCD's to the dock using the 2 DVI ports.  In order to set the 2 LCD's to 1440 x 900 (their max resolution), I have to disconnect the 2 DVI cables from the dock and boot the T520.  Once the T520 is up, I reconnect the 2 LCD's and they work fine.  If I leave them connected during the bootup, I am not able to set them to 1440 x 900.  The max it will go at that point is 1366 x 768.  Even if I boot the laptop before docking and then dock it after it's up, I lose my max resolution until I reboot without the LCD's connected.  I have the NVIDIA NVS 4200m and the driver is up to date (according to Windows).  I am running Win7 Enterprise.  I also tried changing to discrete graphics in the BIOS with no luck.
Can anyone help with how to save this configuration so I don't have to go through this everyday?  Much Appreciated!!

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
Though it might just be that you need to use Disk Utility to Fix Permissions, but I'd do the Applejack thing with any messed install.

  • FW800 won't sleep -- shuts down instead...

So there are many here who are having sleep/power control related problems, however I'm having a slightly different problem. As the subject line states, my FW800 Dual G4 won't sleep. Rather, when I select sleep it simply shuts down.
I have replaced the battery, reset the PRAM, reset the PMU, and reset the NVRAM, without success.
I suspect, however, maybe it's related to software as I can load up new system software and everything works fine. By the time I update everything to the latest software, including iLife, it no longer sleeps.
Short of taking the machine in, does anyone have any further ideas?

    I have this;
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician
    Cheers! DALE

  • Chromium causing monitors not to sleep

I have a fully updated system as of Feb 27 PM.  Coinciding with a recent upgrade to chromium (looks like it was feb 21st to version 25.0.1364.97) my monitors stopped going to sleep after the set time.  I use KDE, and going into the power management settings its set to switch off monitors at 15 minutes.  After much trial and error, I have discovered that if I leave chromium open and running, my monitors won't sleep, even if I close down all tabs and leave it on just the empty tab.  Simply closing down chromium will allow dpms to work correctly.
I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this issue, as well as if anyone had ideas on where to start fixing?  I've searched and haven't come across any other people complaining about this.

so i completely purged my system of chromium, including what was in my user folder.  monitors sleep just fine.  reinstalled, and without it running still sleeps fine.  as soon as I open chromium up, it won't again.  I then installed chromium-dev (vers 27 in aur), and using the same account (meaning same plugins, etc), monitors sleep just fine.
I am fine using dev for now; looks like for whatever reason v25 is causing me issues.  If nobody else is seeing this, we can just chalk it up to me being crazy ;-P  However wanted to get a discussion going in case others were noticing the same thing.
frank604, i'm not using any apps/scripts like caffeine (I actually had to google it to see what you were talking about).  I've always wanted my monitors to sleep, because I leave my system on 24/7 (media server as well as desktop).

I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

If it won't turn on then the monitor is dead (power supply?, video circuits?).  Not worth repairing.
If you have a new iMac then it has thunderbolt.  So exactly what is that monitor you are trying to connect?  For TB you can connect a mini-displayport monitor.   Probably (not 100% sure with TB) can use dvi or vga too if you have the appropriate adapter.

So it looks to me like both displays are being detected.  The geometry looks such that one display is on top of the other, but I can change that using an xorg.conf.d config file (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … xorg.conf).  I also tried using arandr.
The real problem is that the display on HDMI3 just isn't "waking up".  The power is on, but it just sits there in sleep mode.
Any help would be great.  I might just be missing something simple.  Thanks.
Edit:  I just saw a short list of window managers near the bottom of the Arch Multihead page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … _xorg.conf).  I don't see openbox on that list.  Does that mean I'm SOL if I want to use openbox with multiple monitors?  This page seems to imply that it should work fine with openbox http://magnatecha.com/dual-monitors-wit … nd-xrandr/.

I use XFCE, and when I boot my computer I just run:
    xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --output DVI-I-2 --auto --left-of DVI-I-1
I'm assuming if you modify the names appropriately that it'll work too.  I have had issues before trying to run dual monitors without taking both outputs off of a single video card (which is what I'm doing now).  For example, I had a graphics card with one (VGA) output and a VGA output on my motherboard.  But, connecting the graphics card disabled the on-board VGA.  So it is possible (I'm not an expert here) that two displays coming off the motherboard may not work for hardware reasons.

  • Dual monitor sleep problem

I have dual monitors and with 10.5.1 my second monitor will not open after it has gone to sleep. I have to shut down and start over. A simple restart will not bring it back up. I have never had this problem before. Any help??

    Welcome to the Apple Forums.
In System Preferences (found under the Apple Menu in the menu bar), look at the Display pane to see if both screens are recognized by the system. Click on the Detect Displays button. This will force the system to connect to the monitor and will show you if there is an OS problem, or perhaps a hardware problem.
I keep the "Show displays in the menu bar" checked so that I can access it through the Display image in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen.
My experience is that different monitors have different capabilities of connection to the computer- some have to be "detected" every time; some connect, but have to be changed from a mirror to a span or repositioned in the arrangement pane; some just "work right"
    Good luck. Joel.

  • Won't sleep with 2 monitors

    Hi
My G4 GE will not sleep when I have dual monitors connected.
I have the stock AGP Rage Card with a Sony CRT.
And I have an additional PCI Rage card with an Apple Studio Display.
When the second monitor is connected, the mac will not go to sleep. (I click Sleep in the Apple menu - both monitors go out but the mac is still running).
If I disconnect the second monitor, everything is fine. The machine sleeps normally.
Anybody know why this is? Is it fixable? I've done the prefs trashing.

    Hi, IndiGo!.
    1. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose? If the problem arose after making a change, it's possible the change is the cause. Is the addition of a "second monitor" the latest change?
    2. You wrote: "When the second monitor is connected, the mac will not go to sleep. (I click Sleep in the Apple menu - both monitors go out but the mac is still running)."This implies that whatever graphics card or monitor from the two pairs you specified that is "the second monitor" is not responding to Mac OS X power management commands. The Mac may then be in Doze, vs. Deep Sleep mode.
If the "PCI Rage" card is driving the second monitor, assure you have the correct drivers for such.
    Good luck!

  • Monitor won't turn on after "sleep"

    Hi,

What did ssh probing tell you.
Try using PC blindly. For example, leave music player on screen, wait for the fault to appear and than start it. If you hear the sound, then it is either:
Your closed-source driver mistake. Try changing it's version either side or replacing with open-source one. For radeon it is really better already.
Your monitor can't wake up from sleep. Nothing can help it, then. When rebooting PC, it gets a special signal, different from that on sleep.
