With all you media (apps, music) in the iTunes library connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup. Do that by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. Then restore the iPod from that backup.
Note the the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

Try going to Settings>Store and sign out and sign back in.
It also could be due to an Apple server problem. and yu will just have to wait and try again.

You have a 3G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 5.1.1. Its hardware does not support a higher iOS version.
The 4G only go to 6.1.5.
Only the 5G can go to iOS 7

You need at least as much space as you have used on the iPod. Could be as much as 64 GB but is probably much less.
Find a way to delete what you do not need on the computer. Start by emptying the Recycle Bin.

what form of media are you trying to download? If a book from the app store, those can only be read on iDevices, not macs.

I was given a macbook pro with parallel windows, and later windows was remove but hard disk space is greyed out and could not be merge and when i run a 'verify disk' it told me to reformat my OS. The nearest service centre is real far away from me and i hope to solve this on my own. I need to keep my applications and files, how do i do so? However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
