Dumb question...... what is an express card?

Hi- I am a long time Mac user but this new MBP is a new setup for me. I have seen the term 'express card' but have no clue what it is..... if some kind soul could explain it to me in simple terms, I would really appreciate it. Judy

Oh, I think my laptop has one. I guess then I could use it as another plug to plug in an external drive or a mouse or something like that. Thanks for the link to Wiki- I should remember to check that more often. Judy

There is also a static block use for initialising static variables.

  • OK, what's with express cards

    OK, I'll admit it.......I'm a little slow.
It took me a week to figure out I have no pcmcia port on my new MBP. Expresscard???!!! Never heard of one.
This is seriously bumming me out, because I was planning on using my sierra wireless card (pcmcia) with bootcamp (or parallels) when I am on the road.
What gives with the expresscard port? Does anyone actually make hardware for it? I don't see much in this format up on the apple site, that's for sure.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT get anything from firewire direct. I ordered their fw800 card in May. It never worked. I've sent it back (using an RMA number provided by them---at my expense) and after they have had it for over a week, I have heard nothing from them. Their response to the problem originally was to "give them time to figure it out". I gave them more than two weeks. They never got back to me as planned so I contacted them. All apologies, they gave me an rma number and told me to return it. When they received it they would send me a new one. So here I wait---they have my money and they have the card. • Dumb question. what on earth does the fios tv button do?

what on earth does the fios tv button do?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When you are watching a live TV show or VOD, pretty much the same thing as the OK button, it displays the program banner at the bottom of the screen.
When you are watching a recorded program on the DVR however, it will suspend whatever you are watching and switch to the live TV channel that you were last watching.(works on the DVR itself, I have no idea what it does in the multi-room environment as I do not have that service)
It does not do any of the other things that hitting the OK button does as far as I know (like navigating the Menu, etc).
That is all I know about the FiOS TV button

  • T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Questions

Hello, and thank you for checking out my post.  My apologies for writing a book, but I'm hoping to give as much detail as needed the first go round.
I just received my custom-built T420s (4170-CTO) and have a couple technical questions/concerns about it.  The details of my configuration are located at the bottom of this post.
First off, one of the deciding factors of my purchase was the discrete graphics card.  On the T420s I chose NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics 1GB, Intel Core i7-2620M Processor.  I was thrilled to have more than 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory for my games.  Upon receiving my laptop, though, I ran the Windows Experience Index and saw that the lowest score was the graphics card, which is identified as Intel HD Graphics Family and has 64 MB of dedicated graphics memory.  After my heart started beating again I checked Device Manager and found under Display both Intel HD Graphics Family and NVIDIA NVS 4200M listed as working with up-to-date drivers.  When I configured the laptop online there was no mention of hybrid graphics, so I'm not sure why I have an Intel Graphics card on the machine.  My current laptop that I was looking to replace is a T61p with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card, and only that NVIDIA card is shown under Device Manager and in the Windows Experience / Performance Information.  Thinking that perhaps disabling the Intel card would cause the NVIDIA card to take over, I disabled that through Device Manager.  My screen went black and after feeling quite stupid I rebooted my computer.  The default Windows Display driver kicked in, allowing me to see well enough to get back to Device Manager and enable the Intel Graphics.  I counted myself lucky that I wasn't stuck with a working computer with a blank screen, but I'm still confused about why the NVIDIA card isn't the only display adapter on the machine, and why it isn't the default/main adapter.  Most importantly, will it be usable to run my games?
My second question is regarding the PCI ExpressCard slot.  My aim for this machine was to have a HDD to store my data (I selected the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD) and a SSD to boot and run my programs from.  Another reason for choosing this machine was the comment on Lenovo's site stating that a user booted his T420s from a solid state drive in the PCI ExpressCard slot, which was exactly was I was looking for.  I need the CD/DVD drive, so I can't put the second hard drive in a caddy.  During configuration I chose the option for an Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader & Smart Card Reader.  From what I can tell, the Express Card slot is not connected to the Card Readers and I will not lose use of those ports.  When I opened the computer up to install more RAM, I saw what is labeled in Lenovo's hardware manual as the Express Card slot, apparently empty - which is great!  Now I need to figure out what kind of SSD to look for, and on that I'm kinda lost.
I'm guessing that my ExpressCard slot is 34mm and PCI form factor rather than USB... but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a not-incredibly-educated guess.  I'm also not sure where mSATA comes into play for me, if at all.  Looking at SSDs on sites such as newegg.com, I'm unsure of what form factor to choose - ExpressCard, PCI-E, mSATA, and/or 1.8"?
The tech specs of my configured T420s (copy/pasted from the order status) are as follows.  I hope this means more to you than it does to me.

Whew.  Thanks for making it through my book-long post.  If you can offer advice on either of my questions/concerns I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Lauren

The T420s with Nvidia GPU has two graphics card that can switch on the fly, if you only want the discrete gpu, just go into your bios menu under graphics there is an option to select discrete.
With the Nvidia Optimus (which is what you have), it can switch between Nvidia and Intel GPU depending on your application needs. This will allow you to conserve battery or power.
Expresscard slot 34 mm slot is occupied by the card reader that you ordered.
What you are talking about within the ram slot cover, is the mPCIe slot, which can be occupied by a mSATA drive.

  • Express Card/34 - what is it??

Looking on the left side of my MBP - what is the section that has a little trap door? On the apple site - it says Express Card/34. Anyone know what this is??

    Hi,
Questions of this sort are best answered with a tiny bit of Internet search. Wikipedia is a truly amazing repository of information. To wit:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard
And whenever there's a hardware standard behind a technology there's an industry organization and / or a standards body and it's all on the Web. And it perhaps bears mentioning that while Apple pushes the envelope and often adopts upcoming rather than well-established standards, it does pretty much use standardized technologies.
You can expect the Wikipedia article to link to the standards and / or trade group Web sites, and this case is no exception.

  • Dumb question re video card

I bought a radeon 9800 pro graphics card to upgrade my 64mb. stock card and before installing noticed that the new card has one DVI port and one VGA port. the box says it runs dual displays, right now I have dual CRTs running but want to run two flat panels soon.
so the dumb question, can I convert the VGA to DVI with just a cheap adapter and run dual flats without buying an expensive converter for the second VGA port?

    Hi Prankster,
you wont be able to get dual digital support from the 9800 ...sorry.
Of course, you might be able to *physically connect* two digital flat panels to the card but one of the monitor connectors will be recieving an analog video input signal from this graphic card.
To get true dual digital support from ATI you would need the 9600 or 9700 Pro graphic cards.
    Hope this helps !
    Cheers,

I  recently put money on my itunes account but the problem is when i went to purchase music the credit card information needed to be deleted and i forgot the answers to my security questions what do i do? I was told by a friend of mine that all i had to do was call apple support and i would be able to re start the secruity answers.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

  • What's a good Express card for a Macbook Pro?

I'm trying to make my Macbook Pro better for recording by trying to add another Firewire bus so I can use a Firewire interface and record to an external (Firewire 400) drive simultaneously. I can't seem to figure out what the card even is (I haven't actually received it yet, so I'm not a total *******), Apple refers to it as an Express Card/34, but what is that? Is anyone using something that they can refer to me?

Apple refers to it as an Express Card/34, but what is that?
It's an Expresscard slot, type 34.
Seriously - if you want an Expresscard firewire interface, just look for an Expresscard 34 Firewire interface.
Don't choose an Expresscard 54, as it won't fit (it's almost double the width of a 34 slot). (The numbers refer to the sizes of the card - 34mm or 54mm)
If it doesn't say Expresscard, and instead it says things like Cardbus, PCMCIA or any other format, don't buy it, it won't work.

  • Sat Pro M70-113: Express Card slot - What for?

    Hi,
can anybody tell me what is the use of express card slot on my sat pro m70-113,like what hardware can i connect to it for expansion..
    Thanks..
    Message was edited by: ashishsoni

    Hi
This new expansion Express Card slot for notebooks has two sizes: Express Card/34 and Express Card/54, whose widths will be 34 mm (1/8) and 54 mm, respectively. Both are 75 mm long and 5 mm thick. The idea is the same of the PCCard, only that by using serial communication instead the parallel one, it uses less pins (only 26 pins, against 68 pins in the PC Card) and that permits the manufacture of smaller expansion boards.

Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
Type "move itunes library from pc to mac" or similar into the google search bar.

  • HP Express Card Mini Remote Mappings, Issues, Woahs, Questions.

Ok, I am trying to actually get this Mini-Remote to be useful for my DV5-1235DX.
First, is there an easy way to remap the buttons on the remote control?  I will never use HP Smart DVD.  I do not use HP Smart Menu.  I will not use Media Center.  I prefer my own software over those packages.
1). Any way to map those buttons to something else and stop the calls they make starting the existing software?
2). Is there a full list of which media functions the remaining buttons are mapped to?  I have found some so far provided below.
Remote Button Virtual Key Media Key
    Stop VK_MEDIA_STOP MEDIA_STOP
    Rewind MEDIA_FASTFORWARD
    Play/Pause VK_MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE
    Fast Forward MEDIA_REWIND
    Previous VK_MEDIA_PREVIOUS_TRACK MEDIA_PREVIOUSTRACK
    Next VK_MEDIA_NEXT_TRACK MEDIA_NEXTTRACK
    Up MEDIA_CHANNEL_UP
    Down MEDIA_CHANNEL_DOWN
    Direction Up VK_UP
    Direction Down VK_DOWN
    Direction Left VK_LEFT
    Direction Right VK_RIGHT
    OK VK_RETURN
    Back VK_BROWSER_BACK BROWSER_BACKWARD
    Settings "i" Volume Down VK_VOLUME_DOWN VOLUME_DOWN
    Mute VK_VOLUME_MUTE VOLUME_MUTE
    Volume Up VK_VOLUME_UP VOLUME_UP
As can be seen I am still missing some key buttons and their matched Media Key Function Name.
I would appreciate any and all help on finding the missing button functions and remapping the current app start calls.
Thank you very much in advance for your time,
    Kelly
P.S. - EDIT: A programmer friend pointed out the IR Software/Driver may be sending virtual keys and not just media key signals.  With that I was able to map a few more to their virtual key and can use those buttons now as well.
With this new information I can now map all buttons except the little "i" and the 5 buttons across the top (Power, DVD, SmartMenu, Display Switch, MediaCenter).
P.P.S. - Is there even an application that does anything when pressing the "i" button on the remote?  I've tried almost every application that was installed on the laptop and not one has responded when pressing that button.  The HP User Guides section 'HP Mobile Remote Control (Select Models Only) > Button quick reference' lists this button as Settings and says:
"Press to display system information. The button may also be used to display settings menus for some multimedia software."  It does not display system information and I have yet to find any software it displays anything in.
Message Edited by kelendral on 2009-04-25 07:48 PM

Well, I called HP Support today.
They verified the only reaction they could get from that "Settings" button on a similar model (they did not have the exact DV5-1235dx on hand) was to interrupt the screen saver.  This is the exact and only behavoir I have found with that key.
They were also unable to provide any technical information (such as remote code, key being emulated, virtual key command, or media key mapping).
So basically on a similar model device they experienced the exact same thing, the key appears to have no function in any of the software provided by HP.
It is very disappionting that their technical support was so lacking that they could not describe the functionality of the key even after being sent up a level and passed over to a third tech.
Until I figure out the mapping of this key, it appears to be a nice way to remotely interrupt the screensaver.  Then again any of the other keys will do that as well.
I did find some use for knowing both the VK and MK mappings.  Media Player Classic HomeCinema allows the use of either VK or MK mapping.  It also allows the use of both.  By using both some keys can be made to perform double duty.
Example:  MPC-HC has the Play function mapped to MK of MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE.  By mapping the VK of VK_MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE to one of the Jump Backward commands [eg Jump Backward (medium)] then hitting the Play/Pause key while something is playing will pause playback, and do a short rewind.  It will also do another short rewind and start playing again on the next press.
Example 2: MPC-HC has the Mute function mapped to MK VOLUME_MUTE.  By mapping the VK of VK_VOLUME_MUTE to Toggle Subtitles then pressing Mute will mute the sound and turn subtitles on.  Press again to turn subtitles off and turn the sound back on.
This remote is similar to other HP laptops and so if you happen to know a piece of software which responds to the 'Settings i' button on any model of the HP laptop with any express card style remote running Windows Vista 64-bit please give a shout.
    Thanks again,
    Kelly

  • Firewire 400 and 800 PCI Express Card Question

I just put in a Firewire 800 PCI Express card in my Mac Pro. If I add a Firewire 400 PCI Express card also to my Mac Pro will the 800 card work as in 400 speed due to the PCI Express 400 card being added to the Logic board?
    Thanks!!

    Each card operates independently.

  • Future upgrading from current MBP express card 34 capability to54 possible?

My MBP arrived this morning and (my bad) I just noticed lack of FW800 port. I came here to discussions before tearing the seal on the protective envelope in case I might need to return based on your answers:
From reading here, I see people saying express card is better than FW800, but saying 34 is bad, 54 is good/wave of the future.
If I keep this MBP, will I be able to have the internal 34 upgraded to 54, or is the physical slot opening in the body unable to do this, making this MPB already obsolete?
And assuming that there is eventually an expressCard34 adapter eventually made for FW800 (current links provided on the board only led to expressCard54 adapters to FW800), will I be getting FW800 speed (or faster)?
Sorry if these are dumb questions.
    MBP, PowerBookG4, etc   Mac OS X (10.4)

ExpressCard 54 cards are wider than 34's (hence the name), so no, the slot on a MacBook can't support them. It's possible someone will come out with an adapter with some kind of a dongle that plugs into the 34 slot, but it would be cumbersome to use.
When a FW800 ExpressCard 34 comes out, it should be full FW800 speed, since the ExpressCard bus speed exceeds the speed of FW800. But you'll have to check the individual card vendors to see what they provide on their products.
