Duplicate class signatures by GetLoadedClasses

(Unknown problem with this posting, all my paragraphs are no more visible after preview - using IE6).
Hi,
using a heap analyser (jvmti based) on our application results in detecting multiple classes having exactly (really exacty - nothing about inner classes or stuff) the same fully qualified name (package and class name). One thing is special as a maximum of two classes have the same name.
Those two classes having the same name do not appear directly after another. Two examples here: One class name appears first at position 310 and second at 3279. Another class name appears first at 4372 and second at 7916.
The algorithm used (around the iteration over all classes) is only a slightly enhanced version of the part of source of your heap viewer demo. Wether the heap viewer gives the same results could not be tested yet but I am sure as there is no important difference in the (interesting part of) source code.
On later memory consumption analysis those two classes do not always (only sometimes) have the same count of instances or consume the same amount of memory.
How could this be?
Using:
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode)
-- Robert

Ok, looked at those class loaders.<p>
<p>
What I see are two different class loaders for each of both duplicates. For several duplicates I have tried it are always the same two class loaders. Those class loaders are of the same type (class). Further both class loaders have a type 2 reference (among other references) to another class loader, which is exactly the same object referenced in both cases. Those 3 class loaders are the only ones used in our application (except reflection loaders for some sun.reflect.* stuff)<p>
<p>
In your VM Spec I read: "At run time, a class or interface is determined not by its name alone, but by a pair: its fully qualified name and its defining class loader. Each such class or interface belongs to a single runtime package. The runtime package of a class or interface is determined by the package name and defining class loader of the class or interface."<p>
<p>
So the rest of this effect comes from application behavior or are there some JVM internals behind loading a class twice by two different loaders?<p>
<p>

  • Duplicate class definition error while invoking EJB from ADF project

    Hi,
    I am using Jdeveloper TP3 and facing the following problem.
    I have built an EJB project and am ran them successfully in the embedded OC4J via a standalone java program.
    Now I created another project with ADF capabilities and when I tried to ping the EJB i get the following exception
    The application named, current-workspace-app, could not start due to an error.
    duplicate class definition: javax/faces/context/FacesContextFactory Invalid class: javax.faces.context.FacesContextFactory Loader
    This is happenning due to class conflicts between javaee.jar and trinidad-impl.jar/adf-richclient-impl.jar.
    Is there any way of bypassing this class loader issue?

    Hi,
    actually I didn' try the JNDI lookup but used resource injection instead
    In a JSF managed bean I use
    @EJB Ejb30SessionFacadeLocal myLocalInterface;
    public SortableModel getTableModel() {
    List rows = new ArrayList<Employees>();
    rows = myLocalInterface.queryEmployeesFindAll();
    this.tableModel = new SortableModel(rows);
    return tableModel;
    Its a EJB 3.0 session bean that accesses a Local interface. However, if the remote is on the same server then I would think that using @EJB Ejb30SessionFacadeRemote myRemoteInterface; does similar

    I've tried using -classpath and -sourcepath with a lot of different weird and wonderful paths (including ., temppack/ and somewhere completely unrelated to Java), i've tried it with a compiled .class file there and not there, i've tried remaning the class and package to random gibberish in case there was a conflict, and now I'm out of ideas.
    Thanks in advance,

    This is curious.
    classes
    +-doc
    +-temppack
    doc is empty, and temppack contains only Int.java
    ...but if I run
    javadoc temppack -d doc
    in the classes folder I get the duplicate class / private
    not allowed errorsIf you're using 1.4.1, it has a bug that you might be seeing
    that is present in 1.4.0 and 1.4.1 but in no other versions.
    I recommend you upgrade to 1.4.2, which fixes this bug:
    Execution: Fixed so duplicate classes are documented (4673477, tool, REGRESSION)
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4673477.html
    Here is the list of other enhancements in 1.4.2:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/javadoc/whatsnew-1.4.2.html
    execute the following on the commandline
    javadoc -package temppack
    Yep, it works perfectly with -package there!The -package option should make a difference only if
    your class or members are package-private (which they are not).
    The default is to allow public and protected program elements
    to be documented. When you add -package, all it does is
    also package-private program elements to be documented:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/solaris/javadoc.html#package

  • Getting java.lang.LinkageError: duplicate class definition after new build

The error sites the application's primary servlet class. When I bump the server on I-Planet (6.0), the error goes away. I cannot find a duplicate class anywhere, though. I'm stumped.

    Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thank You.

    Hi,
    I hope you have added the classpath in the "context.properties" file, which will be in config directory of your server root directory. You need to restart the server after adding the classpath in the property file.
    Please send me your configuration files, 1)obj.conf 2)magnus.conf 3)error.log 4)jvm12.conf

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply since I am quite new to BPEl can you elaborate a bit on this .
    What I did was
    1. I created a Async BPEL process in JDeveloper and in the same project I put my servlet code and html part when I deploy it on the server and ascess it the welcome jsp is displayed when I click submit on wecome.jsp it forwards to servlet and there the error originates .
    2 If instead I deploy the BPEl process seperately and the try to access the BPEL process using my JDeveloper java code I don't get any error it works fine.
    3 I have included config and schema folders in source path . wf_client_config.xml,user-properties.xml and wf-config.xml is also present in the source folder.
    4 Along with this the jars needed have been also added.
    So when I deploy the BPEL process created in 1 above from Jdeveloper it creates a .ear in j2ee\home\applications and the deploys it .This .ear doesn't has any .class files .
    I take bpelclasses.jar from the .jar which is created when I compile the project and put it in the j2ee\home\applib folder and made an entry for it in the server.xml file.After this it is able to get .class files.
    If there is any alternate way to do the same thing kindly tell me .
    Thanks
    Pranay

    Please help to suggest me. How should I do to let out this error?
    Thanks

    many people use the two interchangeably, though technically it can mean something different.
    What you get back from a call to newInstance() is the same as what you'd get when using the new keyword and no constructor arguments, a reference to an instance of a class (there are other ways to dynamically create an instance using other constructors).
    "Creating a class object" technically means loading the class which causes a Class instance (so an instance of the class Class) to be created for that particular class, making the class available to the JVM for instantiation of instances.
    newInstance() and its sisters are useful for when the class to be instantiated is not known (or even doesn't exist) when compiling the class that needs to instantiate it.
    This is of course the case with JDBC. The people creating the JVM can't know what driver classes will be out there at some point in the future (and if they did know and have access to all of them in the past it would still be foolish to have them all hardwired into the JVM).

  • JSPC compile JSP problems (Duplicate class name)

    Hello,
    I tried to use Ant1.5.1 to compile the JSP files.
    I encountered the following problems:
    if my webapp directory structure is as
    $WEB_ROOT/index.jsp
    $WEB_ROOT/folder1/index.jsp
    I compile the JSP in Ant as following:
    <taskdef classname="org.apache.jasper.JspC" name="jasper2" >
    <classpath refid="run.classpath"/>
    </taskdef>
    <jasper2 verbose="0"
    package="eric.test.jsp"
    uriroot="${basedir}/myserv"
    webXmlFragment="${basedir}/jsp/web.xml"
    outputDir="${basedir}/jsp" />
    The Jasper(JSPC) can't append the extra folder to the index_jsp.java
    Both of the index.jsp that in the "ROOT" or in the "folder1" belongs to the same package "eric.test.jsp".
    Therefore, when I compile the .java files, it just raised the Exception "Duplicate class declaration"
    Best regards,
    Eric

    Hi Eric - did you manage to sort this problem out? I am trying to pre-compile my JSPs and I am having the same problem with duplicates classes.
    What I don't understand is that if I don't pre-compile, and I allow Tomcat to compile the JSPs when they are accessed, it appears to create duplicate classes in the same package without any problems...?

  • Duplicate class error message

    Hi,
    Does anyone know what a duplicate class error message means and how to resolve it?
    It just does not make any sense to me as there is only one instance of the class yet the compiler is throwing out a duplicate class error message.

    I copied your experiment and had no trouble compiling the four classes (A, B, C, and Test). One thing to note is that Test.class shows up in the root destination directory (above a.b.c) because Test.java is missing the package statement. Perhaps, as mentioned earlier in the thread, the missing package statement is causing the problem with your compiler.
    I compiled them with ant using the following build.xml code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <project basedir="." default="compile" name="PackageTest">
         <property name="build.dir" location="build"/>
         <property name="dist.dir" location="dist"/>
         <target name="init">
              <mkdir dir="${build.dir}/classes"/>
              <mkdir dir="${dist.dir}"/>
         </target>
         <target name="compile"
                   depends="init"
                   description="Compile Source Code">
              <javac srcdir="."
                   destdir="${build.dir}/classes"/>
         </target>
    </project>

  • Server side helpset - duplicate class

    My application running on JBoss throws the following
    HTTP ERROR: 500 duplicate class definition: javax/help/HelpSet$HelpSetParser
    This is for a server side helpset. Can any one help me on solving the issue.
    Also when i run it twice i get the pages I get,
    HTTP ERROR: 500 duplicate class definition: javax/help/JHelpTOCNavigator
    HTTP ERROR: 500 javax.help.NavigatorView.getImageID()Ljavax/help/Map$ID;
    Can any one help on this error.

    First Make a deep look at your code
    - Check that you havent declared the class some where twice.
    Then
    - Check you XML file that it is possible that you have added there your class twice
    Or
    - Your XML file is pointing to more than one location and both locations are having a copy of your class file.

  • Duplicate class names under different multi match policies

    We've inherited an ACE SM 3.0 (A5.1a) config, where we noticed duplicate class names under different multi match policies, similar to this:
    policy-map multi-match POLICY1
       class CLASS1-cm
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance policy CLASS1-pm
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
    policy-map multi-match POLICY2
       class CLASS1-cm
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance policy CLASS1-pm
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP-8K-HEADER
    How would the ACE know which multi match policy to use?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    It's always first match. If if the first one satisfies the condition, we don't even look at the second. We would move on to another type. I guess below explanation would answer all your doubts.
    The term "multi-match" refers to execution semantics of the policy; In other words it depicts how the actions are executed for a given flow that matches the classifications in the policy.
    The policy has multi-match semantics because the policy allows configuring  multiple types of features like loadbalancing, NAT inspect etc; so potentially this policy can result in taking multiple actions (if multiple features are configured) for a given matching flow.
    Now given that there can be multiple classifications configured for the same feature type within the policy, the rule is that we always execute *only* the first matching action for a given feature type;
    for .eg consider the below;; just for brevity I am ommiting the exact syntax
    of the cmds
    policy-map multi-match MYPOLICY
      class LB1
        loadbalance policy L7-1
        loadbalance vip inservice
      class NAT1
        nat dynamic 100 vlan 20
      class INSP1
        inspect http
      class LB2
        loadbalance policy L7-2
        loadbalance vip inservice
      class NAT2
        nat dynamic 200 vlan 30
    interface vlan 10
       service-policy input MYPOLICY
    please note above that there are 2 classes each with features loadbalance and
    NAT configured and one class with inspect action;
    For an incoming flow, we try to match and *execute* *ONLY* the action specified
    against first matching class per feature. In otherwords, if flow matches class
    LB1 then we will execute "loadbalance action L7-1" and we wont even try to see
    if class LB2 matches as it is of the same feature type. Only if class LB1 does
    not match we look at LB2.  However we continue matching other class'es since
    they have different feature types;
    This happens for each feature type; Essentially between the class-maps of same
    feature type think of this as first-match and across features its multiple match.
    potentially for above policy the flow can match the below possible classes:
    LB1, NAT1, INSP1
    LB2, NAT1, INSP1
    LB2, NAT2, INSP1
    LB1, NAT2, INSP1
    but the below is not possible;
    LB1, LB2, NAT1, INSP1
    LB2, NAT1, NAT2, INSP1
    you can visualize the above multi-match policy like below; (pls note that below
    syntax is not supported and is strictly for illustration purposes only) below has
    policy types per FEATURE and each such policy can result in ONLY ONE match/action
    being executed;
    policy-map type SLB first-match LBPOLICY
      class LB1
        loadbalance policy L7-1
        loadbalance vip inservice
      class LB2
        loadbalance policy L7-2
        loadbalance vip inservice
    policy-map type NAT first-match NATPOLICY
      class NAT1
        nat dynamic 100 vlan 20
      class NAT2
        nat dynamic 200 vlan 30
    policy-map type inspect first-match INSPECTPOLICY
      class INSP1
        inspect http
    interface vlan 10
       service-policy input LBPOLICY
       service-policy input NATPOLICY
       service-policy input INSPECTPOLICY

  • Duplicate class definition: org/apache/jasper/runtime/HttpJspBase

    I am getting a duplicate class definition in an web server class. I have no idea how to solve this, besides the errors appears only sometimes...
    Any ideas ???
    duplicate class definition: org/apache/jasper/runtime/HttpJspBase
    at org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServlet.service(JspServlet.java:484).

    I'm getting exactly the same problem and I can't see a proper solution.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Mauro.

  • Duplicate class

    I'm getting a duplicate class error and cannot find the reason for it.
    the class source is declared like this: (names changed for simplicity)
    package a.b.c.MyClass;
    public class MyClass { /* code here */ }
    when I try to compile I get:
    [javac] D:\Deployments\src\MyClass.java:6: duplicate c
    lass: a.b.c.MyClass
    [javac] public class MyClass {
    [javac] ^
    what gives? There is only one copy of this class physically, and no other file tries to declare the same class name under a different filename

    The only thing I can thing of that might cause a problem is that this MyClass.java file is right under the root directory where I directed the compiler to run, it is not physically located in subfolders to match the package name, i.e. : it's at D:\Deployments\src\MyClass.java and not D:\Deployments\src\a\b\c\MyClass.java
    but running a quick separate test on another java file it seems it doesnt make a difference?

  • How can I duplicate a signature?

    The project I am working on has a few times where this shows up. The signature on the first page carries over to the second and 3rd pages. I know how to duplicate the other fields with the Global option but is it possible to allow a signature to do the same thing. So once the first page has been signed it will automatically sign the last 2 pages?
    i tried to add <bind match="global"> through XML and only received errors.
    Thanks.

    The signature on each page is usually done for wet/ink signatures but it is not needed for PDF based digital signatures which are applied on entire document.
    so when digitizing the paper workflows to digital signature workflow only one signature can be used.
