Duplicate photos already in photo library

Is there a way to scan your i-photo library and automatically select/delete all duplicate photos? After just recovering lost/accidentally deleted photos, I now have thousands of duplicates in my library, even tho I had selected to not import duplicates. Any one know how to do this quickly?
Thanks in advance,
Pamela

Hi Pamela,
Welcome to the Discussions.
iPhoto Diet (freeware) can remove duplicates among other things.

  • Photos already present in library? where? confused...

I am processing images from a wedding and although CS2 bridge seems to be a faster and more efficient tool for me at the moment, LR offers a much more robust raw converter with recovery, fill light, etc.
I keep running into a problem where when I try to import a folder I get an error message stating "The following photos will not be imported because they are already present in the library. To see these photos in the library select 'Show in Library' (the import will be canceled)
I am at a loss because I cannot find the files in any folders in LR and when I click show in library it shows for example "0/47 photos"
Where are these images?! What am I missing here.
Help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Lee, but there were no filters selected. It makes no sense to me.
Instead of hitting "show in library" which results in a blank window...i can find 47 of the 68 images in the folder by manually selecting the "Prep" folder in the "Folders" section on the left. Where are the other 21 images that were supposedly previously imported?
I don't understand how LR arranges "Folders" on the left in the Library mode. For instance it just says "01_Prep" which is going to be the same subfolder name for all of my weddings...so confused...
Back to CS2 bridge for me it seems...I need to get these images processed!
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • So...the library actually duplicates photos already on my hard drive?

I've been reading the forums and poking around my new MBP trying to learn how iPhoto works and just wanted to verify what I think I'm seeing. I've got a pre-defined structure to my pictures folder that I synch to all of my computers/server. In the past, when using Picasa or the like, photos are referenced in their original location on my hard drives.
However, with iPhoto, when I choose to import photos that exist on my HDD to the iPhoto library, it actually makes another copy of the photo to be stored within that library - It seems that way when I "show package contents" of my library and dig into the "masters" folder. So 2 things I'm trying to verify - 1) I'm using twice as much hard drive space because the pictures on my hard drive are duplicated in the iPhoto library and 2) The working copy is the version stored in the iPhoto library, making it impossible to synch my photo changes with my non-Mac computers? Correct?

Yes - by default - and highly recommended - iPhoto copies the photos to the iPhoto library and even if you use the referenced option (again it is NOT recommended) changes are not reflected in the referenced photo
iPhoto simply is not designed for a multiuser environment and has no cross platform capability
It is a very powerful and extremely inexpensive Mac based photo management system and with limitations can share a library between Mac users

  • I have 8000  photos in my iPhoto library.  Many are duplicated in the "Pictures" folder in the Finder.  Is there an easy way to detect and delete duplicates in the "Pictures" folder?

Anyone know how to detect and delete duplicate photo files that exist in the Pictures folder in the Finder that are also in the iPhoto library?

There's no way to compare the photos in the library with those outside the library.  However, as long as you're running a "managed" library
You can import batches of the photos, i.e by folder, into the library.  If the photo is already in the library you will be given this notice:
Check that checkbox and clik on the Don't Import button.  When that folder is finished importing (or not) delete it and go to the next.
If you need to check for duplicates in the library you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.

  • I can not open i photo. it needs a library that i can use to import photos but i created already books, slide shows and had over 6.000 pictures in the librarybut i can

i photo does not open. It says i photo needs a photo library but I had more that 6.000 pictures in my library. I created already books and slide shows. it seems everthing is gone.
    I get as reply
    - select a library from list -- but no list
    or
    - find another library
    or
    - create a new one and import photos later
any chance te recuperate  or  find all I had in i photo

You can try and recover deleted files from your Mac with an app like File Salvage
    To create a new Library:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.By default it goes in your Pictures Folder.
To save book etc that you have created you need to back up your Library.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
Also, please don't type in block capitals. They are hard to read and on the forum it looks like you'e shouting at everybody.

How do i find duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.

DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • When I upload any photos from iphoto or a folder it overwrites all the existing photos. is there a way to add to the existing library without deleting what's already in the library?

When I upload photos from iphoto or any other folder it overwrites all the existing photos in my ipad. is there a way to add to the existing library without deleting what's already in the library?

No, apart from using the emailing them, to yourself or using a third-party app such as Simple Transfer (in which case the photos will only go into the Saved Photos/Camera Roll album) or the camera connection kit (Imported album). You need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad in one go, as only the contents of the most recent sync remains on the iPad - not including photos in a sync is how you delete them from the iPad

  • Can i share existing albums of photos from my photo library with friends straight to icloud rather than having to create a new shared folder and then select the individual photos rather than a whole album??

    Ok to clarify -
    1. i want to go into my photos on my iphone 6.
    2. create a new folder in shared folders.
    3. Add an entire album of photos from my photo library rather than having to select individual photos.
    4. Share with friends.
Surely the reason i have saved certain photos into albums already from my mac means i like the selection already. So i would like to just share the whole album rather than having to select all the individual photos from the album. Ive tried but maybe im being a doofus and missing something??????
Any help would be most appreciated.
    thank you in advance
    Kris

This is normal and is how Apple handles photos.
    There are NOT duplicate photos.
Just as a song is in your itunes library and you can access that exact same song from a playlist,  all  photos synced to iphone are in the photo library and those exact same photos (NOT duplicates) can be accessed from the individual albums.
It is working exactly as it should.

  • All photos in icloud photo stream not saved in local mac library

Basically, I have a shared icloud photo stream that is 1003 pictures, if I select all of them and say show in library, it only highlights 992 pictures on my local drive. Is there any way I can reimport a photostream?

    Hello asbreck,
You can use these steps to reimport photos from a Shared Photo Stream.
To save photos from shared photo streams you subscribe to:
Photos in shared photo streams are view-only. However, you can import the photos into your iPhoto library, apply edits, share the updated photos, and add them to your slideshows and books.
In the Source list, select Photo Stream.
Double-click the shared stream containing the photos you want to save.
    Select the photos.
Import the photos into your library by dragging them to Events in the Source list.
iPhoto '11: Subscribe to shared photo streams
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11959
It's important to note that if some of these pictures are already in your library and you reimport them, you will have a duplicate of the picture.  If you can isolate the 11 pictures that are not in your library, I recommend importing just those 11 photos.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • HT4236 How do I delete the photos in my "Photo library" and "Iphone photo" albums?

    Help in deleting photos
I can look at my photos on my Iphone like a hard drive and copy and paste the photos to my computer. I can then delete a batch at a time on the Iphone camera roll.  However, how do I delete the 242 photos in my "photo library" album and the 242 duplicate photos in my "Iphone photo" album? When I click on the arrow box icon in the upper right corner of my phone, I can click on a photo, but the delete icon is not available.
I am trying to free up more space on my phone and I want to delete these photos that I have already downloaded to my computer.

Check and see if they synced from more than one computer app.
In itunes, Photos> Check mark "Sync Photos from". See what else is in the drop down menu. (i.e. iphoto, pictures folder, Aperture, choose folder, etc.). If you get the option to: Select Albums, Events, Faces and automatically include. Check mark that, and see if any blue album, or events are ticked. If so, uncheck mark and go down and click Apply/Sync.

  • Why does a black triangle appear instead of landscape photos from a shared library

We have an iMac using OSX10.7.5 and running iPhoto 11 v9.4.1.
There are 2 users of the iMac with separate logins.  We have an iPhoto library that is user 1 administers and imports photos to, edits photos etc.  User 1 can access and see all photos without any problems in thumbnail or large scale/full screen under their login.
When user 2 accesses the photos on the user 2 login, all photos can be seen in thumbnail, but when double clicked to show photos at larger to full screen size, all portrait pictures show ok, but after a first landscape photo sometimes showing, the rest of the landscope photos produce (sometimes) a flash of the picture but then the area of the photo goes black with a warning sign, that is a triangle with an explanation mark appears in the centre of the screen.
If user 2 runs a slideshow, the portrait pictures show up, the screen is black/blank whilst landcsape photos would be shown
A very few landscape photos can be seen and they all appear to be files of less than 1.5mb, but this does not apply to all photos of less than 1.5mb.
The photo library has photos from 2 iPhone 4s, 2 Leica and 2 Nikon cameras of varying sizes. The problem does not seem to be associated with any particular camera.
User 2 (my wife) is very unhappy!
    Any help and insights welcome.
    Many thanks
    Wally

Where is this library located? If it's in the Shared folder then that's probably why you're having problems. But it's usually with permissions, not broken links/file path to the original photo that the exclamation mark is an indication of.
Your best and most trouble free solution is to put the library on an external hard drive that's been formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with owner ship set to be ignored:
You can try the following to fix the problem but be warned that the problme may manifest itself again after some use: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Why is iPhoto 11 not recognizing already imported photos from 4S?

I just plugged my 4S into my iMac i3, which is running OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11' all products are up to date on software updates. I wanted to removed some videos off my 4S to free of some space on the phone.  I normall use icloud for all photo syncing and what not so plugging my 4S into the imac is not a common thing for me.
After opening iPhoto I noticed that the photos that were selected as "New Photos" were most duplicates of older photos that were already in my iPhoto library, some dating back a couple of years ago.  I keep copies of them on my iphone to show people when I'm away from my imac.  What I don't understand is why is iPhoto thinking these are "New Photos" and not "Already Imported" photos?  What is even stranger is that when I look in the "Already Imported" photos, those same photos (the ones that iPhoto wants to now import again) are showing up there too.
So my dilema is, that iPhoto is saying that out of 1,289 photos on my 4S, 354 are "New Photos" to be imported but about 250-300 of those are NOT new, they already exist in my iPhoto library. Why is iPhoto not reconizing already imported photos?
Also, if I am using Photo Stream to sync my photos across everything.. why do I even have any new photos to import??  Shouldn't everything already be there when I open up iPhoto, why would I need to import any photos from my 4S if icloud and Photo Stream work correctly with iPhoto 11' ?  I have checked and made sure numberous times that I have Photo Stream and icloud turned on in all the correct places and devices.
What I'm currently using:  iPhone 4S iOS 6.0.1 and iMac i3 OSX 10.8.2 and iPhoto 11' version 9.4.2

You'll need to create a new, temporary library and import into that with the option to delete from your iPhone. Then delete the library and go back to your current library.
