Duplicates That Aren't Duplicates

I have both manually in finder (in music folder on ext HDD), manually in iTunes, and have run Araxis duplicate finder multiple times. When I have gone thru 120+ gigs of music (whole family's) folder by folder, I make sure itunes isn't running. Then I open and sync. There's roughly 18,000 songs, videos, iTunes Extra stuff (moving itunes extra stuff and videos to another folder). But iTunes Match says I have 13,000 + songs but I would say 1/3 or more are marked duplicates. How do I get those to clear out. There is no other copy of a song on my hard drive. I even took off the copy to iTunes folder and organize files because that's where I have found duplicates occur. Or do I delete the whole library (library file) and start from scratch. My song counts are off too. I got a MacBook Pro and an Air and somehow the counts and last played also are screwy because I listen to my iPhone or iPad every night as I sleep.

I cannot give you answer to all your issues but I'll make suggestions about iTunes Match.
Firstly, if you should add iCloud status to your song view. Go menu > view > view options and tick iCloud status. This field will tell you the tracks that have been matched, uploaded, purchased, duplicate, inelligible or waiting.
You can then examine specifically those tracks marked duplicate, inelligible or waiting.
Duplicate is usually shown if match believes you already have that exact track in your library. If they are not try selecting track then ctrl click and select add to cloud.
Inelligible tracks - why? Must be music file 96 Kbps or greater or music video purchased from iTunes Store. Other will show inelligible.
Waiting - means tracks have not been matched or uploaded. Why are they still waiting - could be a problem with file.

Duplicates that aren't - why?

Sometimes when I import into iPhoto, I get the "Want to import duplicates?" dialog which shows the two photos, and they are not duplicates at all. Not the same scene, not the same date, often not the same aspect ratio.
FYI, I just went through a laborious rebuild of my library to fix a hang while importing. Success, that fixed now. Yay!!! I hoped fixing that problem would fix this duplicates problem as well, but alas, no.

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' and import 20 or so pics, then try and import some of them again. Do you get the correct Duplicate Warning?
Yes, doing this I get the correct duplicates.
More bad news with the rebuilt library - it just hung again during an import. Arrgh. The problem is back. Only lasted 4 imports (approx 150 photos each) before it started hanging again.
When you did the Event by Event process did you create a new clean Library? Or import to the product of one of the failed rebuilds?
I'm fairly sure it was a new library. But I can't recall exactly. I'd better take some notes this time!!!

I'm using the following query command in a report:

Basically, my output is something like this:

I don't want the report to show the rows with a pH analysis of an old method version. Thus, only John's records should show up and not Sally's. And I don't want Sue's last two records to show up, since version 3 is the highest.
Maybe there's a way to modify the query command to only show records for the highest version of a method, but I'm not sure how to do that. Or maybe there's a way to suppress the lower version analyses in Crystal.
Any ideas?

you can do this by:
1) create a group on the name
2) put a summary on the version for Minimum for the entire report
3) put a summary on the version for Maximum for the name group
4) create a suppression formula for the details section using something similar to
= Minimum() or
< Maximum(, namegroup)

Duplicates that won't go away

I managed to duplicate all my contact entries in the move from MobileMe to iCloud. At first they showed up as 'unified' duplicates. I turned Contacts off and on and they eventually morphed into just iCloud entries. Is there some way to merge or delete them without going through them one by one. I have an iPad and iPhone with an iOS that allows me to use iCloud, but my laptop runs Snow Leopard and so I can only see iCloud on the web from there. When I turn off, delete all the iPad contacts, and then turn it on again ... and then check the contact list at first there aren't any duplicates.. then the duplicates start showing up, and they stay there. On the desktop version I can merge duplicates but not on the web, or iOS versions.. not as far as I can see. And I don't have the contacts on my desktop sync'ed with iCloud since they're on Snow Leopard
It's occured to me that I can probably export my contacts, somehow delete what's on iCloud, and the upload a fresh set.. maybe by syncing over iTunes or something.
Suggestions??

I'd already read that.. BUT it loooks like I figured it out-- deleted all the contacts from my phone, sync'd with the desktop to get a clean Contacts install. then I deleted all the contacts on the iCloud site, and sync'd with the clean install on the phone.. it seems to have worked...marie

I'm not sure I understand the question.
First I would update your iTunes match. iTunes match will tell you what is duplicates and then you can just delete them from the library.
Second, the course in a situation like this is to delete ONE duplicate and see what happens. Make sure you have that song backed up somewhere just incase it deletes it completely. But usually I'd delete one and then see if it deletes both or just the one you pressed.
Thirdly, update iTunes match. It usually does a good job of locating actual duplicates.

I need a script that can delete duplicate songs within iTunesMedia but not shown on iTunes GUI

I copied entire music in itunes library A and paste it in itunes library B. I subsequently experimented with import playlist and import .XML files of itunes library A to itunes library B. I notice songs in music folder have been duplicated i.e. the gigabyte of music folder greated than gigabyte shown on itunes GUI.
Wow, I never knew importing .XML file (through import playlist) will import the songs, the metadata, the artwork and the entire playlist which i never created in the first place (I dont know what else had been imported).
Anyway, the songs are not duplicated on the iTunes GUI. They are duplicated within iTunesMedia\Music... folders. Can someone provide me a Script to delete these approx. 100GB duplicates. The DeDuper Script I have can only delete duplicate songs displayed on iTunes GUI.

The script is only intended to work on things that iTunes would treat as "Exact Duplicates" and it only works on files that are connected to the iTunes library. Before starting all files in your media folders should be added to the iTunes library.
In the context of the earlier thread, type 1 or logical duplicates are multiple entries to the same file and type 2 or physical duplicates are multiple copies of the same file. Type 2 dupes will have identical tag information (at least they will unless you edit one of them) and the same file size so will thus display as "Exact Duplicates" if present.
The script avoids the more complex problem of trying to detect and selectively remove what I called type 3 duplicates, that is alternate recordings or rips of the same tune, principally because that is a much harder problem to automate, but also because "best track to keep" from a set of potential candiates will be a subjective matter.
The current version of the DeDuper script is 1.0.1.2 dated 2nd December 2011. I've just downloaded and run it on a test library. I had 35 tracks that I first duplicated by copying the Music folder into Automatically Add to iTunes. I then renamed Music as Music1, selected each file in turn so that iTunes would "know" the files were missing, renamed the folder back to Music and then dragged & dropped the folder into the library. This created a library of 140 tracks, 35 originals, 35 physical dupes and 70 logical dupes . The script ran as designed and reduced the library back down to 35 tracks with the 35 physical dupes being sent to the recycle bin.

Is it possible for IPhoto to go through images and find duplicates which can then be safely deleted? I have so many duplicates that it would take me weeks to physically go through them and delete individually. I

Try one of these: iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto, Duplicate Annihilator or iPhoto Applescript to Remove Duplicates. The second and last are free. The first is, IMO, the better app and has many other features.

Printing events that aren't there!

I just installed Tiger (10.4.11) on my G4 1.25 GHz PowerPC. It has iCal 2.0.5. When I bring up the Print dialog, there are entries that aren't on the calendar itself (I just have one calendar). I have recurring events every Thursday & Friday. In the Print preview, it duplicates these events on Friday & Saturday. Anyone know what's up?

You can submit suggestions for the iTunes Music Store through the Request Music page. Whether or not your suggestion will ever be acted upon will depend on a number of factors, some out of Apple's control (to start with, the artists and record companies have to be willing to license the tracks to Apple), so don't expect instant action.

How can I transfer photos from a 4S to a 5S that aren't stored in iCloud?

I'm due to swap from a 4S to a 5S and have so e pictures that aren't in iCloud (taken on older software versions pre iCloud).
Is there anyway to transfer these via the handsets, or will I need to do it via laptop / PC?

Did you actually set up the iPad by restoring from a back up of the phone.

Change the album title to AlbumX, apply, then change back to Album. Repeat as necessary.

How can I delete bookmarks that aren't in a folder (unorganized)?

When I click on "Organize Bookmarks" I don't find a way to get to the bookmarks that aren't organized into a folder. I'd like to delete some and to sort others into the folders, but none of these show up. There is an item in the left bar named "Unorganized Bookmarks" but when I highlight it, it shows nothing as if it were empty. Is there another way I can access those single bookmarks to sort them and delete them?

If you want to burn them, you need to have the song files physically on your local drive.
If they were purchased from one of the online stores that allows re-downloading (Amazon Digital Music, iTunes Store, etc.), just download new copies.

As the title indicates: After upgrading to iOS7, I can no longer send or receive texts that aren't iMessages.
The text conversations are still there; you can see that I used to be able to text anyone. But now I cannot.
I have followed several different fixes suggested in these forums, I have Restored my phone, I have Reset Network Settings, I have Reset All Settings, I have checked settings on several friend's phones. But I still cannot send or receive texts that are not iMessage texts.
This seems like a pretty big deal. People text more than they call. And I now have a phone that cannot text very many people.
It is so frustrating. I have spent so much time trying to get it to work.

I don't know if this is a corrupted preference file or not, but it sure can't hurt to try this.
If Mail is open, Quit Mail.
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Drag that .plist file to the Desktop. Launch Mail and see if you can send or receive e-mail. If you can, that .plist file is corrupted. Drag it to the trash, empty the trash and reboot. Your Mac will create a new preference file for you the next time you launch Mail.
Also... run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
