Duplications in Preview

Hi,
I'm very new to Mac's after having been with Windows.
I open up Preview through the Launchpad and then open up the Pictures folder and within that there is the iPhoto Library.
I open this up and then it shows me 702 images however upon opening up iPhoto Library there are only 212 images.
Is there a reason for there being many duplicates and there seems to be a big and thumbnail version?
It also seems to show images of Faces that appear in my images! Is there a way of stopping this?
Many Thanks
Matt

Ok, so its perfectly normal for there to be 2 versions of each photo when i open the iPhoto Library in Preview?
Matt
Yes, but it is not perfectly normal to open the iPhoto Library in Preview. Browse the library, using iPhoto or the Media Browser.

  • Pdf duplication in Preview for Mac behaving differently

When duplicating a PDF in Preview for Mac, a new image window would open that I could click on to select, then rename and save elsewhere. Just recently, seems like in the last few days, Preview now behaves differently. Now when I select duplicate, a duplicate document is created in the same window but shows as a thumbnail in the sidebar. This is confusing as it appears that Preview is trying to create a duplicate of the document at the end of the original. I don't appear to have received any updates from Apple that would account for this sudden change in behaviour (shows Preview last modified 18th November). I don't appear to be able to change this in Preview's Preferences. Can I revert Preview to the previous behaviour? (I'm using latest version of Preview in Yosemite on a 24" iMac).

I always find that Preview can garble certain graphic elements or even slightly alter the over-all color of the PDF. However, I also find it is a lot quicker to deal with PDFs, especially when it comes to printing. Sometimes I get a PDF that I send to print on our Canon copier and I end up canceling the print job after 10-15 minutes because it's still processing. I open that same PDF in Preview and it prints in less than a minute. The same can be said of InDesign so on certain jobs I end up exporting as a PDF and printing from Preview. This might say a lot about Adobe's Printing Engine... (sorry, off-topic)

  • Premiere Pro CS6 extreme project bloating and Media Encoder

    Hi there,
I'm interested in hearing if others are having this issue and if there's a fix.  I first noticed this bug in CS5 and it hasn't changed in CS6.0.1.  An editor I'm working with recently discovered the problem at the expense of a project being usable the day before clients are coming in to work on cuts.
Here's what's happening: we have a 20MB commercial project, no warp stabilizer in play, no frequent "save as..." commands being used, both of which seem to contribute to project bloating based on some online research.  I've been using Premiere as a finishing timeline since CS5 and noticed back then, when we were making some settings in Media Encoder, that when you click and drag sequences into ME instead of using the "Add Premiere Pro Sequence" menu option, the Premiere project file size quickly increases and saves and autosaves start taking several minutes to complete.
We've been using the "Add Premiere Pro Sequence" method to send things to ME on this project but the editor was getting impatient the amount of time it was taking for ME to load the project and get to the point where he could pick which sequences he wanted to encode.  He did a bit of research and found the click and drag method to be faster.  After a handful of times using this method, the project size went from 20MB to 3.71GB.  Our autosave folder is set keep 5 versions of the project and you can see the project size doubling from 477MB to 840MB to 1.6GB.
I was able to import the 477MB project into a new project and save it out at its original size of 20MB.  However, this meant that we lost about 90 minutes worth of work.  I tried to import the 3.71GB file overnight and it had made no progress when I came in this AM.
Reading online, I found that the "Save As..." command had previously caused some kind of duplication of preview file links in the project code.  I opened up our 20MB project in TextWrangler and compared it to the 840MB project's lines of code.  The 20MB project had 400k lines and the 840MB project had about a million.  The difference appeared to stem from links to Preview files.  I wanted to try to clear those out to see if I could get the project size down but, probably because of the file size, TextWrangler crashed.
Is there any way to clean out the bloat from these projects without importing into a new project?  Also, are there settings in Media Encoder or Premiere that will prevent the bloat from happening when using the click-drag method of getting sequences into ME?  We're using the "Use Preview Files" option, which greatly speeds up the compression in ME, but might be contributing to the issue.
    Here are the machine specs:
    Mac Pro 2.66 GHz 12-core
    16GB RAM
    NVidia Quadro 4000
    ATTO Fibrechannel card
    Blackmagic Design Decklink Extreme 2
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Best,
    Jon

    Thank you for your response.
-I tried exporting an AVI and the file exported succesfully but with a warning "Adobe Media Encoder Could not write XMP data in output file." The file plays fine though and is over 5.5GB. So that's odd that my h.264 which is under 1GB won't fully export.
-Yes, the same thing happens when exporting directly from PrPro instead of using AME.
-In this project I am using NO Dynamic Links.
-I have not installed any codec libraries.
    -I do not use 3rd party plug-ins.
-My destination drive has several terabytes.
    Thanks,

  • Duplication of profile info (re: Model/OS/Other Details) in 'preview'

I'm wondering if this is a bug re: composing messages.
If I 'preview' a message, that message is tagged with profile information re: my computer. If I then return to the message and edit it, the same information is again entered in the same message when I post it, resulting in duplication of that profile data.
The only way I've found to avoid that is to manually delete the information while still in preview, before returning to edit the message.
    Is there another way?
    Thanks.

    "Is there another way?"
    No.
Of course, you can always make use of that extra set of profiles & copy and paste within the Discussions' formatting tags to make your message 'different' - until they get it fixed, that is…
There's lots you can do with Discussions' formatting…

  • Preview duplication not copying "some" data

I have clients complete PDF's on line with myself and then mail them for checking and review. When I recieve them back I then review on-line with them and make revisions where necessary using Preview.
I have just noticed that when I duplicate a PDF some of the form data is not carried across. I have tried unlocking adding the data then saving, still loose the same data. I have tried Export, Export as a PDF and still the same data is not carried across.
Any ideas - before juming back to Acrobat?

don't have system with me so can not see the exact screens.
But for in same users_gen when you upload users via a text fie you have options to choose which diff info is in yr file
eg role, bldg name, room no etc
do you have similar selection in the screen for users upload via RFC?

  • PAGE SETUP LOST/CHANGED ON DUPLICATION

Using Pages '09 (v4.3) to produce a custom envelope for printing, discovered a problem of Page Setup info being lost/changed when you Duplicate a file or when trying to print from a template produced from that file.
I set up the file using Merge Fields for the recipients, working from a Master and using the File>Duplicate command to make a copy of the file for examining the output.  Everything looked good in the Print Dialogue displays, and also when checking by, for example, Saving PDF to Preview. On running an actual test print, however, it came out a total mess; text on the envelope in the wrong place and the wrong orientation, totally unuseable.
On examination I found that the Master's Page Setup info had been changed in the duplication:
"Format for ....." changed from <My printer> to "Any Printer"
"Paper Size"      changed from <My custom size & name> to "Other", although dimensions were retained
"Orientation"       changed from Vertical/Portrait to Horizontal/Landscape
This happened each and every time I duplicated the file, and I learned to simply go in and change the Page Setup info before printing.  Once happy with the design, I saved the last good Master off as a Template so I could call it up from My Templates for future use.  Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that the same thing happens from there.  Drag the vcards into the displayed file, set up the Mail Merge, and go to Print and all will look well but, once again, actual printouts will be messed up and, on examination, for the exact same reasons.
Page Setup is being messed up in a way that isn't visible on any of the visual displays before actually printing; there, all looks as you think it should and it appears that the printing should go well.  The info actually being sent to the printer, however, is incorrect. So, there seem to be two errors here, both linked:
The Page Setup info is not being reflected in the images or icons showing what the printed output will look like, and
The output produced at the printer is not what is shown before you print.
I'm far from a Pages expert so I can't help but wonder:  Is there some essential step I've been missing here? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Slight correction to the above: The corruption/change of the Page Setup information occurs as the template is selected, i.e, the new "Untitled.." window opens. If you go ahead and change the info back to what it should have been, what it was saved as when the template was created, then all works normally.
Same is true of the duplication: The setup info changes as soon as you dupe the file.  The original will still have the correct info, but the copy now shows the same stale default values (terms used might not be appropriate).

  • Can't import JPGs but I can open with Preview

    iPhoto 4, OSX 10.3.9
I copied hundreds of JPGs (from XP) to OSX and tried to import them into iPhoto. I get an error message.
    "Unreadable Files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type of the files may not contain valid data).
If I open the image with Preview and then save it as a JPG, I can import it, however it is impractical to do this with the volume of images I have. Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds?

    Just about anywhere else...
iPhoto is a database and will import the pics to the iPhoto Library Folder when you add them to the library. It will not import pics from the iPhoto Library Folder as a protection against duplication. So, put the pics on the desktop, import them and trash the files from the desktop when you're finished.

  • Web page truncated in print preview

Print preview on this web page is truncated in the middle of the comments.
Internet Explorer 11.0 is worse, omitting the comments entirely.
Chrome 37.0 print preview is quite good with a few minor errors. And the print function includes PDF file output, exactly what I was looking for.
I am a long time Firefox fan so it is painful to have resorted to installing Chrome.... :-( :-)
Are there some config change(s) I could make so the print preview would be complete?
(Maybe it's the content that's causing the problems? :-D)
    http://www.gayguys.com/2014/08/young-gay-guys-becoming-attraction-older-men/

This is a tough one. The Facebook content is in an iframe (inline frame) and due to the style rules in the frame, or something about the way the frame is positioned in the page, Firefox is not correctly paginating the full iframe content.
There are lots of cases like this where Firefox stumbles in its print layout. Often a little hack solves it, but in this case, I don't see a quick fix.
You can print the comments in full as follows:
right-click the Facebook content > This Frame > Print Frame
In the print dialog, you can start on page 2 (e.g., 2 to 99) to reduce the duplication. (Due to text size difference when printing the FB content outside of the frame, there was still some overlap in my test.)

  • Duplication of Photos between iPhoto & Aperture / Memory Issues

Is there a way for iPhoto & Aperture to share the same photos, so that there is not a duplication of photos and too greatly reduce memory space for those of us with large libraries????

iPhoto only imports the files from your card, in exactly the same condition as they exist on the card. It does not duplicate. It does not reduce quality or lose pixels. Check your camera's manual. The most likely cause of the duplication is that your camera gives you a simultaneous RAW and jpeg (or tiff) file for each photo you shoot. Your camera probably has a control where you can turn this feature off.
You can check your camera card. Click on the Finder's icon in the dock. Your card should be listed as an external drive in the left column of the Finder window, somewhere below your Macintosh HD. Set the Finder window to column view and click on your card to display its contents. My bet is that you will see the duplication there, before you ever import to your library. Click on a file to see its information in the next column; you can check the pixel dimensions if they are reported there with the Preview.
I import from a card reader as well. You can ignore the initial iPhoto "Importing" screen and click back on Library in the Source Pane. Choose File > Import to Library, then navigate to the camera card. You can preview the files on the card, select only the ones you wish to import, and import directly into the iPhoto library. This gives you complete control over your imports and prevents you from importing duplicates.

  • Duplication of photos

I use a freestanding SanDisk multi-purpose memory reader in perfect working order. Plugged directly into my USB port...been there nearly a year.
I recently purchased a Nikon D80 that uses SD cards.
I shoot everything in RAW/standard with my 10.2 mega pixel camera. I placed the Memory Card into the SanDisk Reader and opened iPhoto. To my amazement iPhoto said I had twice the images I shot? When I checked after the download it Duplicated each image. i.e. I shot 125 images on one card it gave me 250 in the Album.
    Two questions:
    1. Eliminate the duplication on the initial Download - keep in mind it does not ask to eliminate duplications on the first download only the 2nd and thereafter.
    2. Is there anyway to check the Quality of the downloaded images to make sure all the pixels shot are being placed on the computer. In-other-words first generation quality.
    thanks

  • Lync screen sharing doesn't work in Windows 10 Technical Preview (9879 Build)

Why Lync screen sharing doesn't work in Windows 10 Technical Preview?
It works well Windows 8.1, but why not in Windows 10?

    Hi PriTeddy,
    Thanks for your feedback.
As Paul Adare said, Microsoft has noticed such issue, they are listed in following blog:
    http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/11/12/new-build-available-to-the-windows-insider-program/
    Some known problems:
As with the last build, you’re getting hot-off-the-presses code which means there are a few issues. We’ll be publishing WU updates shortly to fix the first two, but the remainder will not be fixed for 9879.
•In some cases you may get a black screen when trying to log-in or unlock. The only option is to hold the power button to hard reboot.
•You will be unable to connect to Distributed File System network locations.
•Some systems may see disk growth of 20GB+ due to driver install duplication. On systems with low disk space this can block setup and cause a rollback to the previous build.
•Skype calls will disconnect and Music will stop playing if those apps are minimized.
•There are several known issues with screen sharing with Lync.
    Let’s wait for next builds.

  • "Save a Version" or "Export" in Preview doesn't work while in other Apple apps work.

I tried to resize images with Preview app.
First I duplicated the file, resized it, saved, was prompted the file name so I entered new name and then it says "The document "xx" could not be saved",
Then I tried reopen the file, resize it without duplication, save a version of it, and I got the same message.
I tried save the file in several different folders, reboot the computer and none of them worked.
Other Apple apps featuring autosave like Texteditor, Keynote work just fine.
I know there are tons of resizing app out there, but I just want my Preview app to work correctly.
My Mac is MBP bought in '10 summer, my OS is Lion.2, the latest one.
    Thank you for reading.

It sounds like a Permissions problem.
In the Finder, Go > (hold down the option key) and choose Library.
Go into the Containers folder and delete the "com.apple.Preview" folder.
In the Preferences folder, there will be some "com.apple.Preview" files. Maybe delete those too.
    See if that fixes it.

  • IPhoto duplication: Resolution

Just want to share this beacuse I had been struggling with trying to resolve the issue of duplication of images in my photo library. It started when I upgraded my computer and tried to import an old photo library. Anyway, this seems to work:
    1) Created two folders: PhotoExport 1 and 2 on the desktop
    2) Took an old photo library and exported it using "original image" and subfolder of "event name" to PhotoExport 1
    3) Once exported, deleted any bogus event names.(The duplicated images would come across in numerical event names
    4) Quit iPhoto and then opened a different photolibrary (using the opt key) and did steps 2 and 3 only I exported that library to PhotoExport2
    5) Selected all files in PhotoExport2 and tried to move them into PhotoExport 1 -- So, if there were any duplicaton of "events" they didn't copy into the folder.
I did this with a couple of older libraries, and then I created a brand new library in the Pictures folder and imported the entire content of PhotoExport1. And, Ta-Da! I have a non-duplicated photo library....this will only work if you have been pretty good about naming your events.

Best advice: don't have the problem in the first place:
It started when I upgraded my computer and tried to import an old photo library.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new Machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else. And no duplicates.
Also, be very aware with the scheme you have evolved there: File size. There can be three files in an iPhoto Library with the same name: the Original, the thumbnail and the Preview. Did you chck the file size before deleting anything?

  • Previewing loops

Have had no luck with PCs trying to do music recoding so I swithced over to Mac because I heard it so easy, seamless, and problem free. Now, on opening Garageband for the first time and trying to preview loops I get an error mesage that says: "the software instrument or apple loop selected is currently being installed. You have already initiated the installation of additional content for Garageband via Software update. For additional information please open the software update application." I have opened this application and nothing. I have now spent about two hours trying to fix this problem. Should I "convert back to PC, take this load of crap back to the store or is there something simple I am missing?

I have found if you wait long enough, you will hear the file begin to play. Sometimes the delay can several seconds. Not acceptable IMO.

  • Text options in the new Preview (Yosemite)

Dear list members, in the old version of Preview (Mavericks), there were several options in the text box tool, such as outlined text. Now in the new Preview (Yosemite), those options are gone. Is there a way to reactivate them? Thanks!

I find it annoying too. Also, when you want to add text, you always need to open the title bar and then to text box always goes in the middle of the document. The only way I found to get over that issue was to ask my friend to put Preview 7.0 on a USB key (he is still on Mavericks) and then I dragged it in my application folder. It works for some PDFs but not for all of them unfortunatelly...
