DVCPRO HD 1080i/25p

I have just done a shoot with a Panasonic HVX200 on P2 using the 1080i/25 setting. I am also using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 (can't upgrade as that is the version installed on the college computers). I can ingest the footage using the DVCPROHD 1080/50i codec but the footage comes in full picture without the black enveloped bars top and bottom. What does happen in that the picture has black bars on the left and right side of the frame. Is there a way to ingest (Import) the footage and get an anamorphic (16.9) frame with black bars top and bottom (I did it once but can't remember how)?
Any help appreciated

That was the first version of FCP to support P2 imported footage, and it had issues. If you really need to work with this footage, you really need to upgrade. Or you really need to get THEM to upgrade.
There is no way to control the import...it comes in as is. But making FCP do the proper sequence settings is the issue, and PAL support for P2 was VERY lacking in version 5.0.4.

  • 1080i/25p to film out

    hello.
we're shooting with the HVX200 a feature film and the final will be a Film out (35 mm).
we will be using final cut studio for editing.
    question is:
when using the 1080i/25p mode (shooting progressive - recording interlace),
how does the final cut remove the pull down so we get the original progressive picture?
does it recombine the two fields or drop down one of them?
Our concern is to get the highest possible resolution for the film out.
    Thank you in advance
    Peace

I'm sure you've figured this out already as your most is a month old, but a great way is to finish all your post at 1080i/25p and then use Cinema Tools to convert to 24p at the end. The film will be slowed down and a little longer in length, but it's almost unnoticeable if you do a pitch change with your final audio. A lot of people work this way and it's your best option as you can keep the film as a 1:1 image ratio and not get into horrible looking pulldown conversions.

  • Fcpx imports DVCPro HD 1080i always as NTSC/1080p

    Hallo to All,
I have a problem importing DVCPro HD 1080i50 material in fcpx 10.0.3. The imported clips always appear as NTSC 1080p clips and they are not longer interlaced, even if my project is ProRes 442 HQ 1080i 1920x1080. How can I import an DVCPro HD 1080i clip in the right way?
    Thnks for helping
    callingernie

I tried making all sequence settings DV but still no luck. Just get a black screen on playback of tape. Very weird. Frame size, pixel ratio, compressor all DV.
I have a screening coming up soon so I'll probably have a post facility make a DVCAM from the HDCAM master tape, which which will probably look better anyway than doing it in FCP from the DVCPro file. Still it would be nice to figure out why it isn't working.

  • Exporting DVCPRO HD 1080i

I have completed a multi-track (6video tracks/9 audio tracks)13 minute edit. Video , titles, stills, music, voice...just a normal edit really. Now I want to make a DVD. In the past with SD DVCAM I always export my multi-track edit into a one piece AVI before converting to mpeg for DVD. This always seems to clean up any strange things from happening to my final DVD video.
Now when I export my DVCPRO HD 1080i muti-track project to a one piece DVCPRO HD 1080i file it comes out missing little clips and some titles....?
    Any comments or ideas?
    Thanks,

I have taken footage in HD 1080i. Presently I need to make a movie in DVD format using my HD footage, but I would like to assemble my footage in HD so that if in the future I want to upgrade it won't be a problem. So can I make my movie in HD1080i and export it to DVD format? If so, how? Or if I make it in DVD format is there an easy way to upgrade my movie to HD in the future?

  • Premier CS3 is demolishing my DVCPRO HD 1080i footage

My project looks BEAUTIFUL on my original timeline but by the time it is encoded to standard DVD specs (progressive or interlaced) it looks almost like VHS. I have read the discussions about what the CS3 deinterlacing does to our beautiful HD footage.
I have also read the very detailed work arounds posted by Dan Isaacs. I really appreciate the extreme technical knowledge and talent that Dan and those who follow Dans procdures have. I on the other hand am just a professional editor/producer that has been doing video production full time for 20 years. I do not have the knowledge or time to follow this procedure.
All I want is for Premier CS3 to render my HD footage into acceptable DVD quality. Is the new CS4 going to do a better job of rendering DVCPRO HD 1080i???? Or do I need to go to a different editing program after using Premier since the days of 5.1???
    Please Help if you can...
    Thanks,
    Mark Voigt

Unfortunately, the links to the original articles are possibly broken now - forum changeover. However, you *might* be able to locate the new links via Search. It's different now, as you have to initiate the Search, Enter, ignore what is found, then go to Options. There you can set the criteria for Forum, and then add Dan to the list. That *should* get you close. Might take some doing. If I can locate Dan's excellent articles in the new forum, I'll be sure to post the current links. Until the Google (and other) 'bots complete a full sweep of the new forum, and compile the new links, older articles just might be out in limbo.

[Edit] Here's ONE for you, but it's mostly Dan's replies and not the main How To article that I'm looking for.
[Edit 2] Here is ANOTHER, that looks like the original article, but seems truncated, in that this link goes to Jeff Bellune's reply, which, IIRC was way down the thread. Maybe the original is lost forever.

  • DVCPRO HD 1080i 59.97 or 29.97

Hi, I have a lot of DVCPRO HD Tape to digitize. And the crew dosen't know if they shoot in 29.97 or 59.97. I can capture it in both frame rate and they both play fine. If I use the 'abort capture on drop frame' with the 29.97 it stop capturing after 2-3 minutes . if im in 59.97 it stop after about 21 frame... If I don't use it the both capture of course, but some clip frezees and make the clip offsync...
Also the clip that I capture in 59,94 only appears to have 29.97 in the timeline.. even in my clip setting... weird..
Im using an ajhd 1400 deck. Does anybody know how can I figure out witch fps they used ?

1080i is only 29.97 fps. 720p is 59.94. 1080i60 means 60 interlaced fields...30fps. So choose the DVCPRO HD 1080i60. The inability to capture is most likely due to the hard drive you are trying to capture to. What kind of drive is it? How is it formatted? How is it connected? You only have one firewire bus so unless you have an additional firewire card.

  • Dvcpro hd 1080/25p

    dear colleges,
i bought a panasonic HVX200. i thought that FCP6.2 would have the dvcprohd 1080 25p codec, but it is not there (at least i cannot find it). i intend to blow up my footage to 35mm and therefore i need the 25p codec. How to go ahead with this?
    filmstad producties

HI Gerard, yep its there.I have recently bought a HVX-200 and imported my first 1080/25P. It's not on the EASY SETUP.
Simply adjust the setting's (cmd+0) of your new SEQUENCE to your 25P, 1080 and your away before dropping the 1080/25P into the sequence.
    should be fine.

  • DVCPRO HD 1080i 24p question

I know FCP does not support DVCPRO HD 1080 24p yet.
But I have played with Cinema Tools. I used the Nattress Cadance plug-in and was able to make a 24p file. It plays the right time in QuickTime but when I bring it into AE it is re-sized to 640x360. Not of much use. I have read the Cinema Tools docs front to back and have been searching for hours with no answers. We are shooting with HVX200 and need to supply a 1920x1080 24p file. Thanks

about half-way down, a workflow is suggested. The resize to 360 pix appears to be only for the QT proxies.

  • DVCPro HD 720 25p

    Hi,
I'm just sitting down to edit a short film and noticed that all the clips have come in at 50fps despite the DOP telling me they were shot at 25fps.
They seem to play fine in an FCP project with a sequence set to 25fps, so what's the deal? Is every other frame redundant? If I drop the clips into After Effects they timeline automatically defaults to 50fps.
I never transferred the clips and haven't seen this before, any advice?

Oh and yes it's playing back fine. In quicktime however it says it playing at about 37 fps even though it's coming off of a RAID with tons of bandwidth (can get 10 streams of HD no problem)
What's the downside if I just do a huge re-render down to 25fps on all the clips? (about 750 of them!)

  • DVCPRO HD project with HDCAM

Hi there. If anyone can give me some pointers on this i'd really appreciate it.
I'm just about to start editing a documentary project which we shot entirely on DVCPRO HD at 1080i 25p. I'm intending to cut this natively in the DVCPRO HD codec after capturing via my KONA 3.
The problem i have is that some footage I need to complete the edit which is being dubbed direct from a feature project is being delivered in HDCAM format.
What would be the best format for me to digitise this footage in to enable me to work with it in the DVCPRO HD project as seamlessly as possible? Can i capture HDCAM through the KONA and cross convert to DVCPRO HD??
This may be a simple one, but I'm new to the KONA 3 and mixed format HD projects so help would be very much appreciated!
    thanks

  • DVCPRO 50 in FCP

Hi, I need to download some DVCPRO 50 tapes. I have a Panasonic HD1400. I already downloaded with the same deck, large format DVCPRO HD (1080i) tapes but doesn't recognize the DVCPRO 50 tapes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

Thanks for your answer. I am not sure if I have a card, but i tried to match the settings and nothing happened However, I called apple's technical support and they told me to delete the "Cache" and "Preference" info that I had. After that we relaunch FCP and it worked well.
    Thanks again for you time!

  • Conforming DVCPRO HD PAL to NTSC

I keep having this problem. I open a PAL QT file (approx. 80 mins. long) in Cinema Tools, then conform it to 23.98 NTSC. It takes about a second to do that, which I assume is merely changing information in the header so that all other applications think the file is 23.98 instead of 25fps. I seems to work perfectly.. now I have an NTSC file (running 4% slower than when it was PAL) which is absolutely perfect except for a 5 frame glitch at around 4 mins. 53 secs. The glitch is five frames of grey with colored bits scattered about on it. This is the only problem with an otherwise perfect conform.
I'm working in DVCPRO HD 1080i 50fps. I've done this conform three times now and it corrupts my file at the same place every time. Very frustrating.

I have a similar problem. Except I get 3 BLACK frames at exactly 3:52:12. I have created a separate post for this and will update if I get a solution I will let you know.

  • P2 1080i/24p and CS3

Started a DVCPRO HD 1080i/24p project. Imported P2 mxf files shot in 1080i/24p. Timeline needs rendering when mxf is placed on timeline.
Why does this happen? Every other native P2 project for DVCPRO HD does not require rendering. ex, 720/60 etc.
CS4 does not behave this way in the trial I downloaded.

    I noticed the same issue while running some tests today. I shot 6 x 30 second clips to p2. 1080i 24p, 1080i 24pa, 720p 24p, 702p 24pn, DVCPro 50 480i 24pa, DVCPro 50 480i 24p. I created 3 sequences, one for each of the resolutions.
On the 1080i sequence the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. Same thing for the DVCPro 50, the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. None of the 720 clips required rendering and neither of those were shot in 24p advance.
I am very interested to find out why this is happening.

  • What do I need to push DVCPRO HD

    Hello all,
We have an upcoming project that will be shot using the Panasonic 200 with the P2 cards. The client would like us to shoot in DVCPRO HD 1080i or 720p. The data will be captured to a firestore drive in the field and then placed on our drives here, which are raided promax towers that interface through firewire 800. Since the firestore unit itself is firewire 400, I'm guessing that firewire 800 drives will be more than capable of playing back the DVCPRO HD footage without hickups. Is this assumption correct? Or do we need to go sata or some other more robust route to edit in DVCPRO HD?
Also on a side note, our CRT monitor is not HD capable. We have dual cinema displays here. Will the playback look decent on these monitors?
G5 Quad PPC 2.5 GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

For drives, all you need is firewire 800. Firewire 400 would even work if you shot 720p24...at 24PN. But I used G-Raids with great success...although the NEWER ones aren't all that reliable when you try to daisy chain them. I like the CalDigit stuff....firewire VR is very capable.
Playback will be decent, although you'll most likely use both monitors for your edit space. And you can get decent playback on one in Digital Cinema Preview mode. But if you want true Broadcast HD monitoring, if you just throw a Matrox MXO into the mix (connects to the mac via DVI) then you can turn one of the Apple 23" Cinema Displays into a true HD monitor. I got it to match VERY CLOSE to my HD CRT.

  • DVCPRO HD 720p25

    Hi!
At the moment I'm writing my diploma thesis about the different HD-formats. For this I have to compare for example 720p50 to 1080i50 (nothing really new, I know)... Anyway, also I'd like to work with DVCPRO HD 720/25p and DVCPRO HD 720/25pn, recorded by Panasonic HVX200 and HPX500. We have FCP6 and FCP7, but neither of them can work with this format. Both convert it to 720p50, even though that isn't what I want. This is why I'm asking for help, since I haven't found a real answer in the internet.... Hope anyone can help me, I'd be so glad.
So my final question is: is there any way in FCP to work with DVCPRO HD 720p25 (pn isn't that important)?
    Thanks in advance!
    bye Anke

We have FCP6 and FCP7, but neither of them can work with this format.
Look in the Easy Setup and select DVC PRO HD 720p25. It is most certainly there.
Then go to Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset.
