DVD burn fails just at end (multiplexer error)?

iDVD goes through the whole burn process and then fails at the very end, giving us a 'multiplexer error' message.
Any suggestions?
Ben

Hi
As I remember it - this often is due to Cheap DVDs eg NoName BUT there can be other things like a dirty laser lens (cleaning disk ?)
This is my way of doing it:
1. iDVD 6 has two levels of qualities.
• Best Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than - se below
• Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - Highest quality on final DVD
in iDVD’08 there is even a Pro-Quality (120 min.) - very good.
2. From FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov
iMovie - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos.
Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
3. I use Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disc. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. DVD-R (I don't use DVD+R or +/-RW)
7. NTSC iMovie projects - to - NTSC iDVD projects - resp
PAL iMovie projects - to - PAL iDVD projects
Yours Bengt W

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

    Hello,
when i try to burn a data dvd with a variety of files from finder on my power mac g5 it thinks a while and then fails with the message:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)
I just downloaded the latest OS updates last night.
Disc utility showed permissions problems in some files on my boot drive including in a darwin folder but they repaired fine.
Two weeks ago apple replaced my superdrive and i hadn't tried burning a dvd since then, but cds did and do burn fine.
This computer is under warrantee but in case the latest software updates caused this, or if someone has an easy fix that would allow me to save the trip to the store for analysis and potential couple day wait...
    i'm all ears!

    Thank you for your help!
At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

  • Intel Mini DVD+RW re-burns fail: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device

I can't re-write DVD+RW discs on my Intel Mini. The log says:
Backup: Burn sense: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device write fault
Backup: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
It happends with every Philips 4x DVD+RW I have after first burn. Also the log says it is trying to burn at 47x speed. Could this be why it is so noisy - it spins up like a rocket at 5 second intervals and then the disks can't be ejected.
Backup: Requested burn speed was 47x, actual burn speed is 4x.
Is this a sign of a bug or just an optimistic Backup?

I'm 99.99% sure this is an Intel Mini Superdrive problem now. I think it is incompatible with the Philips DVD+RW media. I will try to get new +RW media soon and see if I get joy with other formats.
I have taken the exact same media from the same pack and I can burn > erase FIVE times on the same disk, and not a single problem yet on my PPC G4 mini. I can only dream of doing this cycle once on my Intel Mini.
Intel mini (OS X 10.4.7) has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 FM3J
PPC (OS X Server 10.4.7) mini has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 D8PB
What's more the PPC mini makes almost zero noise, only one burst of quier "roar" near the start of erase. Contrast this to the constantly 5s roaring cycle that makes you raise your voice on the intel mini.
I believe my Intel Mini is either faulty or there is a firmware issue with the drive.
Can somebody else try Philips 4x DVD+RW discs in an Intel Core Duo and report their drive info?
    Thanks in advance

  • DVD Burn Failed-Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

Please help: I can not burn any DVDs. I am trying to burn some pictures from iPhoto to DVD for storage. I choose the pictures & then hit the burn icon at the bottom of iPhoto. It will run for about an hour but then stops. I keep getting "Burn Failed: the burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 drive failed. Unknown error." I've tried several TDK DVD-R 2x discs & the original Apple DVD-R that shipped with my computer. I am able to burn CDs with no problem but this is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD. Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. I have lots of pictures & I've got to get them off of my computer. Thank you very much.

I'm having the same exact problem with my Powerbook I think, it's a 1GHz with the same Matshita DVD drive. It'll burn the disc apparently, but it never finishes. it just idles in "Closing Session 1" (i'm using a burn folder in Tiger now)...
but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.
I want Apple to fix this!

  • Burn failed because of "Medium Write Error."

I've got a early '08 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.5.8 and iLife '09.
I'm trying to burn a tracked podcast to a CD, and after getting through all the mixdowns and normalizing, it will burn for a short while and will "finish" the burn, eject the CD and come up with a "Burn Failed" message that says,
"The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-867 drive failed. The burn failed because of a medium write error."
This problem has just recently developed. I've done this many times in the past, but the last few CDs I've tried to burn have taken me four or five tries until I get a successful burn. I'm tired of wasting my CD-Rs!
My drive reads both CDs and DVDs without a problem, and burns through iTunes without a problem.
What's going on? Can I do anything to fix this?

    UPDATE!!!
On suspicion as I am camera geek, (film maker)
I know dust can do weird things, I took the blank part of the disc container, you know, usually solid color or clear and cut it into a gun shape and wrapped it in one of my fiber fine lens cloth.
I gently inserted it to knock some dust loose, (think optical eye) be careful not to twist or shove to hard if resistance is met. did the old nintendo blow in the drive fromt the side and prayed.
Went back to FCPX and re-shared to disc and....... Voila!!
    Burned several discs already.
Good luck if you have this.
I suspect the dust from my over amped fans due to SMC fan control could have blown dust or hair on the optic and prevented it, (this is where apple listens close)
Please advixe your "techs" to suggest compressed air or disc cleaners..although my disc cleaner did nothing.

  • DVD burn fails on symlink

I'm trying to burn a DVD backup of a directory that contains some symbolic links to other directories, and the burn fails every time. If I drag the directory to the blank DVD, then try to remove the symbolic links from the burn folder, they actually get removed from the "real" folder! Does anyone know a way around this? At the very least, I need some way to gracefully get around having a symbolic link -- some way that doesn't involve creating a coaster, which so far is all I've been able to do.
EDIT: So, it looks like it wasn't the symlinks at all, but something more generally related to backing up the ~/Library folder, per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7e70f. I have to say. I tried fixing permissions, but no luck, I just made my sixth coaster of the night trying to backup my own files. This is frankly ridiculous: Not only does the folder inexplicably avoid being burned, but it crashes the entire burn process, not at the point of preparation, but mid-burn.
Second, burning for me is slow, just 2X. I've seen a couple of recent threads on this issue, but they're with Rev B iMacs as I understand. I'm using a Rev. A, with the Pioneer DVR-KO4F. Is there any way to improve the speed?
    Thanks very much-
    -Alan

    Hi
It sounds as if it may be lack of free disk space, or lack of contiguous free disk space. How much do you have left on your main drive? Perhaps deleting some unwanted files would help.
If your drive is highly fragmented the DVD image may be scattered all over the disk, causing a buffer underrun, especially if you're running the burning software off the same drive. You can buy software to defragment it, although OS X defragments small files on the fly so it's not normally needed. Perhaps burning at a slower speed would give the drive time to keep the buffer full. Freeing up some disk space should also help though, so there's more contiguous free space available

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

It identified write restrictions, but my goal was to write a playable DVD and it fails in both my SuperDrive and off-the-shelf DVD players.
Thanks for the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the issue in this case. Is there some basic compatibility issue with using DVD+R media as a playable DVD for most off-the-shelf players?

  • T500 dvd burner fails hl-dt dvdram gsa-u20n

my dvd burner has failed strangely -- the dvd-r and dvd+r fail to burn. However I can burn cd-r and dvd+rw.
I have tried many blank disks(dvd-r) . I reloaded to device driver.
I tried the lenovo diagnostics which give an error code for dvd-r of 2102H
and an error code of 0c00h for dvd+r
Any help on figuring whether the burner hardware is broken or there is some other problem software etc.
The firware level is HX10  and the driver is usoft, date 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2535.0

I did finally burn the disk. However, I am going to close out the problem. I borrowed an external burner and was able to burn a a blank dvd that failed to burn previously.
Somebody suggest to me that I reseat the dvd burner from my laptop. I puled it out pushed it in then it worked one time
before failing. I then tried puling it in and out several times and it seems to be working. I know this may not be a perfect solution as it indicates that the contacts may have a problem.
My ultimate thought is to buy an external burner and use the ultra bay(which has the dvd burner) for more storage.
Thank you for your diagnostic suggestions.
I'll carry the pcdoctor disk in case I have future problems.

  • Why do my dvd burns fail to verify

Several attempts to burn dvds have resulted if failures to verify. It seems to burn fine, but will not verify and tells me the disk may be unreliable. I am using Delkin Devices Archival Gold DVD-R discs. Burned at both x6 and x8. The first 6 or so burned and verified fine, but the last 4 have not been verifyable. Any thoughts?

    There could be several reasons:
iMac Superdrives are extremely finicky - mine only likes Verbatim for instance. So you might want to try a different brand; another way to get consistent good burns is to burn slowly - I set mine at the slowest speed available; I'd rather wait a few more minutes. I also do not do anything else during the burn process (and turn off screensaver/sleep). And, the drives are not sturdy desktop models, they get hot - so I would not burn more than two at most and then let it cool down for at least 15 - 20 minutes. For all of the above reasons, I usually use a desktop sturdy tray loaded burner which just works. But, even using the internal, I've never had a coaster.

  • DVD burn fails on verify consistantly, unless you boot from another disk...

    Guys,
I have a dual G4. Always seemed to be able to burn a DVD. Now, Popcorn, disk utility and toast all fail verify for DVD burns.
If I boot from my backup disk and burn using popcorn, toast or disk utility it burns and verifies fine. Both are Tiger 10.4.8, one has many things installed, the back up drive has few things.
It seems to exonerate the hardware and my verbatim media.
    Any ideas?

  • I'm on my 5th CD to burn disc (iTunes).  "Burn failed due to medium  write error.  What is that!?!!!

I am attempting to burn a music list in iTunes.  I have done it many times before.  I am on my fifth CD for this list, and repeatedly have got a message that the CD "could not be burned because of a medium write error."  I've got that message previously, but after changing the blank disc to which I want to add the song list, it has always worked.  Not this time; several attempts.  What is this message telling me, if anything??

The disk you are using probably has a defect, not uncommon on consumer grade disks. Try another disk or better yet another disk from a different manufacturer or at least a different batch.

  • MacPro 1.1 DVD burner fails to burn-.

I had to burn a DVD of videos and Powerpoint presentation when I coudn't find my 16Gb thumbdrive. I haven't burned a DVD since the last release of iDVD from iLife.
I was surprised I couldn't just burn a data file from the desktop. I've used blank DVDr, same ones I'ved used in the past, and it fails. Giving an error message which I can't recall right now. I have tried using the latest version of iDVD, but twice now it spits out the DVD and seems to hang, but Finder doesn't show it as "Not Responding" when I go to the Force Quit.
Hardware test shows no problems. Any suggestion is appreciated.
I did burn one CDr about a year ago for music. I had no obvious errors or issues when I did.

Me too...got a stack of TDK DVD-R blanks at costco and tried to use 'em for burning. Some worked and some didn't. sent 'em back to TDK. Got a whole new stack. Some worked and some didn't. Could be the brand or the batch. I'm as puzzled as you are, Robert P.  Why some work and some don't is a mystery. What I was told, and have verified, that certain brands work, and others don't.  Again, why, I dunno. However-verbatim is a solid bet are are Taiyo Yuden (hard to find, maybe). Sony doesn't work. Maxell sorta works okay. Memorex could be okay.
\also, try running disk utility and verifying permissions. Could be helpful. How much Ram do you have on board?

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 DVD burn fails if computer is doing other things too

I can burn DVDs successfully if I leave the computer alone and don't try to do anything else with it while the burn is taking place. However, if I am printing or typing or even using the Finder at the same time, then the burned disk will not verify (errors in sector such and such). This is with Toast 7 and the Superdrive. It also happens with my external Pioneer 4x burner too.
    Is this normal?

Just a note of interest. as a brody points out.
It is not a good practice to burn DVD's and use other applications at the same time.
Burning is not only very Ram Intensive, there are several other processes that are taking place as well.
It is a very good idea to burn by itself and not do any other process.
Many users that try to multi-task while burning report burner errors and overall poor preformance.
You are also using a burner that is a few years old as well and there have been updates to not only the burner, but firmware and software and media as well.
    Cheers Don
