DVD Drive woes! Burns but can't read!

GRRRR! This just started. I can burn blank DVDs in my drive (NEC ND-3550A - 1 yr. old), but when I put the burned DVD right back in, it's not recognized!!!!
I have made sure the finder preference and system preferences are right. The DVD drive shows up under the profiler. Permissions have been repaired. Using same media I have been using all along (without any problems).
I have tried other DVD videos & Data DVDs that I have burned on this machine (which used to work) - but now they don't.
Commercial DVD's & burned CDs WORK fine!
But the DVD Laser Lens Cleaner DVD- (that used to work) DOESN'T WORK anymore either.
Every DVD that I put in the drive, pops up a message that the DVD is blank. The DVD player app. does NOT open.
The DVD's that I tried work fine on my Powerbook.
Ideas? Suggestions?

Hi-
I assume that you have restarted the machine since this problem started?
Might be time to reinstall your OS? That is, assuming it reads the install DVD/CD......
Archive and Install may be enough to patch things up- or, try updating to 10.3.9 (your profile says 10.3.8)

DVD's burn/read just fine. CD's read with no problem but CD's will not burn...this has been going on for a few months...

    Hi Brad Newton-
I assume you have tied different brands and speeds of disks?
It is possible for the CD burning portion of the drive to fail while the DVD part works as planned. Sounds like a bad optical drive.
You can have it replaced under warranty or AppleCare, replace it yourself and/or get an external burner.

Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

The soon to be released new iMacs don't have a DVD drive. I don't believe that Apple have updated their site to say their USB drive will work, but the expectation is that it will.
I watched the keynote and when Phil Schiller was presenting the new models I think he mentioned something about it working and he had one on the desk next to the iMac.
I'm going to check the keynote if it's still up and I'll update my post if I'm wrong.

  • Drives Burn, but won't read newly burned disk

I've got two sony super drives, they are burning seemingly ok, but when I eject the disk and put it back in the computer tells me I've inserted a blank disk.
I can see the data burned into the disk, so I know there's something on the disk, but what's going on with my drives? It's both drives, so that leads me to believe that it's a software issue, not a bad drive.

I have posted on another section, but here are my comments repeated.
My dual disk drive fails to read some of my backup DVDs, which is a irritating. I have used a DVD cleaner, by the way. They were burnt on the machine originally and have been read in the past by both drives. I fitted 2 drives for just this sort of eventuality – and to do 2 backups at the same time, so I don't believe it is drive failure. I can restart the machine and occasionally they will read, but often not. I reduced the speed of burn from x16 down to x12 to see if it made a difference, but that is fairly inconcusive. The disks are stored 2-up in individual crystal cases, so scratching from sleeves shouldn't be a problem.
The disks fortunately CAN be read on my wife's old iMac, so I can network the data across.
Interestingly, some of the DVDs used are unbranded (plain white for printing), but some are 'Imation' brand. I would note that 'Tesco' (supermarket brand) DVD+R disks appear to be satisfactory at recalling data, for the time being.
The conclusion I draw is that it is down to the quality of the disks that are used. Don't necessarily go for bargain spindles of unbranded disks for valuable backups, although I cannot definitely say that branded ('Imation' in my case) disks will guarantee your backup security.
Judging by the lack of input on this message board on this subject, this may not be a widespread problem, but I would be interested to know if there is a definitive fix out there or if anyone can comment.

  • Read this for CD/DVD Drive with burning, missing drives, not seeing discs

Seeing lots of the same posts with the same solutions being applied (mostly upper/lower control filters/MS Fixit)... so I thought I'd put this up for everyone.
*Update* If this helps, please click the kudos to the right as I'm trying to gauge how effective this is. If you have the time to help the community, please reply stating what did or did not work.
There are some helpful HP support articles that you may want to try before posting:
If your drive cannot burn discs... or you can burn CDs but not DVDs (or vise/versa)... read this...
Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows 7)
Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows Vista)
Drive Cannot Write to Writable Discs (Windows 98, ME, XP)
    Summary:
    1) Try different discs! Cheap discs can be hit or miss. Find a disc brand and type that works best.
    2) Try burning at a slower speed (not the best option, but can often get the job done if the laser is fading).
    3) Remove drive from Device Manager and remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    4) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    5) Use PC-Doctor/HP Hardware Diagnostic software to check for a bad drive.
    6) If the drive is not bad - save your files and use HP Recovery to put the system back to the beginning.
If your drive cannot read discs; CDs or DVDs or both...
Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows 7
Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows Vista
Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows 98, ME, and XP
    Summary:
    {restart the PC at least once to see if the drive shows up on boot}
    1) See if the drive is listed in Device Manager (look for problems if it is).
    2) Check autoplay (skip if you don't use).
    3) Make sure a bad disc isn't knocking out the drive (an operating system mounts discs as drives and things can get screwed up).
    4) Try reading the disc from a command prompt environment (outside of Windows).
    5) Reinstall drive from Device Manager (if drive is listed). {I'd replace this with bigger process of remove upper/lower filters (see below)}.
    6) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    7) Use PC-Doctor/HP Hardware Diagnostic software to check for a bad drive.
CD/DVD drive is missing (not in Windows Explorer or My Computer or in burning software)...
CD/DVD Drive is not Detected (Windows 7)
CD/DVD Drive is not Detected (Windows Vista)
CD or DVD Drive is not Detected (Windows 98, ME, or XP)
    Summary:
    1) See if the drive is listed in Device Manager (troubleshoot based on what you see).
    2) Reset Power: Unplug power cord, press Power button for 10 seconds.
    3) Check power and data cables attached to the drive and look in the BIOS for the drive name.
    4) Remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    5) Reinstall burning software
    6) Get and CD/DVD drive firmware updates if available (to prevent missing drives in the future (I assume)).
    7)  Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    Stuck Drawer...
Opening a Stuck CD or DVD Drive Tray
    Summary:
    1) Press eject button on case, on drive, button on keyboard (if exists).
    2) Right-click drive icon in Windows and select Eject.
    3) Turn off PC and inert a straightened paper clip into the manual release hole on the drive.
    4) Check the power cord on the back of the drive.

    Microsoft Fix it Solution
Otherwise, here are the manual steps (overview):
    1) Uninstall the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and DO NOT RESTART the computer.
    2) Uninstall your CD burning software (make sure you have the installation disc or you can resinstall from Start, Programs, PC Help and Tools, Recovery Manager (or Driver/Application Recovery). If you don't have the installation discs, skip this step - it might still work).
    3) Open the registry editor (Start -> Run -> enter Regedit) ... might want to make a backup of the registry at this point.
    4) Open the following keys:
     + HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
     + SYSTEM
+ CurrentControlSet (or the current control set with lowest number if that is all that is listed)
     + Control
     + Class
    5) Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. It has to be this exact key - make sure you can see the last numbers!!!
    6) Delete the UpperFilter and or the LowerFilters value in the right window if either exists.
    7) RESTART the computer - this step is important. Wait for Windows to find and install the CD/DVD drive you removed earlier.
    8) Reinstall your burning software and restart the computer again.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • DVD-1285dx dvd/cd drive not burning disks and not reading some.

My HP Pavilion DVD-1285dx is acting strange. It reads some disks both dvd and cd just fine. When I try to burn new disks, the software I use, both trying to burn from windows explorer and also 3-party software, reads the disk and attempts to write to them. I then get an error stating that the disk has had an error so I think the disk is bad and nothing has gotten written to it. When I then try to read what is on that disk nothing is seen or the drive just keeps attempting to read it over and over again.
I have checked device manager and it showed no errors; I looked for updated drivers, none found; I deleted the the drive, rebooted then let it discover again, no change.
I ran Microsoft Fix-it which didn't find or fix the problem. I also installed a set of codecs suggested on a different board. When I found that it didn't correct the problem I uninstalled it.

  • DVD Drive Not Burning, Tried Cleaning - No Luck

    So,
Over the summer, my dvd/cd drive inside my 15inch Macbook died. Took it to Apple and they replaced it with no problem cause of my apple care. Months went by, I burned a couple CDs and such. But not DVDs. Last week, I tried burning a DVD and experienced a problem. I search all over google and these help boards and such to find solutions. Here is my log after the burn.
DVD Studio Pro: Burn started, Tue Dec  6 11:56:52 2011

DVD Studio Pro: Burn error: 0x8002006D The disc can't be burned; it might be incompatible with this disc drive. Please try a different brand of disc, or try burning at a slower speed.
I tried that language changing fix, didn't work.
I purched a Memorex Cleaning Disc, still doesn't work.
My last two options are to go out and buy a different kind of disc, but I don't understand why I have to. Iv been using the same kind of blank DVDs for a year now. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Doug

OH BTW, I burned in Disc Utility at 2x and it worked fine. But it took forever to do so I will not settle for burning at 2x lol.

  • Internal DVD drive is shot. Can I install SL from an external DVD drive?

Hi folks, a quick (well actually a few) questions.
I've had my imac since early '06. It's currently running Tiger, and I'd like to install Snow Leopard. The problem is that the internal DVD drive is shot. It's been occasionally refusing to accept DVDs for a while now, and now it has a DVD stuck in it (not mounted), which I can't get out via terminal, rebooting, or jiggling it (technical term I know).
Now, I'm going to assume that getting apple to replace the DVD drive will be more expensive than just grabbing an external drive, especially as I'll most probably only use it once. The question is, if I grab a cheap external DVD drive, will I be able to install Snow Leopard with it? Or will Tiger not recognise it as a boot drive?
    Many thanks,
    Chris
p.s. Also, I'm using a cheapo windows style keyboard (will be replacing asap), and I'm wondering if this is why I can't see bootable drives when holing option on startup?

Yes, you can install from an external drive, although I wouldn’t go for a cheap one. There are good, relatively inexpensive, drives out there. And you are going to need that option key to select the install disk as your startup. I believe there is a corresponding key on a PC keyboard, but I don’t know what it is (maybe Alt?). I’m sure someone can jump in here and tell us.

  • Images Offline, NAS Drive in Finder but can't Reconnect

    Aperture 3.0.2, Mac OS 10.6.3
I have all referenced images on network drive. It's all there in the finder but aperture says it's offline. Furthermore, the reconnect button is always greyed out.
Even more odd is sometimes when I relaunch Aperture, it finds the images but they're ephemeral. (I can right-click to Show in Finder successfully once or twice then it's offline again.)
I have tried rebuilding library to no avail. I've tried copying referenced images to local drive and I still can't reconnect (greyed out) - I'm totally stumped.

I found the best articulation of the solution at MacCreate: http://aperture.maccreate.com/2008/03/01/reconnecting-images-in-aperture-2-when- moved-between-drives/
How the "Reconnect ... " dialog works is not at all obvious. In fact, it is somewhat misleading because so many of us were incensed over the apparent claim that our drives were offline.
I have come to understand that "offline", which appears in the "Status" column between the "Volume" and "Files" column does not pertain to the drive (Volume) but to the images (Files)! After successfully reconnecting Aperture to images in one particular folder of my external drive, the dialog then showed two lines for the same Volume: one showing the number of online files (the reconnected ones) and another line showing the number of offline files (not yet reconnected).
It would be clearer if the columns were labeled "Volume", "File Status", "No. of Files", but such labels would increase the column widths.

  • DVD/CD RW GT20L SATA can't READ / EJECT anymore

    Full name of device:
    DVD/CD RW (HL-DT-STDVDRAM) GT20L SATA
    Used with:
    - Windows 7
    - HP Pavilion All-in-One MS200
    Controller:
    provider: Microsoft
    version: 6.1.7601.17514
    date: 21/06/2006
    The PROBLEM:
After working for about 3 years only... the DVD reader stopped working about 1 year ago now...
I have used an external drive in the meantime but would like to take some time finally to solve this issue.
In Windows Explorer, in "Properties" for the DVD RW it says the "device works properly" (or equivalent in Spanish).
BUT ITunes does not see the CD when I insert it, and when I do, the CD stays blocked until randomly, one day, the DVDRW starts making some noise (like trying to read it) a day, a week, a month later (I mean it really looks random), and then if I press the eject button it will finally eject...
Am really no computer expert, but to me it looks like it should come from software, since sometimes the DVD RW "responds", and it was not used a long time to justify its breaking down...

    Hello @AnThoR,
I have read your post on how your DVD/CD drive on your All-in-One computer is not able to read or eject discs correctly, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To enable your DVD drive to read and eject discs once again, I recommend following the steps in this document on Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 7), as well as Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
If your system is not able to detect discs in the drive, I also recommend following the steps in this resource on CD/DVD drive is not detected (Windows 7).
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • I have Reader 9.3 but can't read pdf files in Elements 8

I have Acrobat Reader 9.3 installed.  I installed Elements 8 Standard but can't run its tutorials that are in PDF format.  I get a message saying" A sufficient version (8.1 or later) of Adobe Reader is detected but the version of Adobe Reader that is setup to handle PDF content is older than Reader 8.1".
My operating system is Windows 7.
I had Acrobat 5 on my computer.  Thinking that this may be causing the problem I unistalled it using Control Panel.  But this didn't solve the problem.
    I welcome advice.

You probably ruined Reader by removing Acrobat after installing the former. I would start by removing all traces of Acrobat and Reader, and then install the desired version of Reader.
