DVD Help

I'm having a problem with my disc drive. It's reading CD's, but having trouble with DVD's. Sometimes it will load them, but the majoity of the time it'll just eject them. I did the PRAM and SMC resets, i.e. talking out the battery while the comp is off, holding the power button while plugging in the adapter and booting with Ctrl+Option+P+R. This initially worked, but the problem started again soon after. I did the resets again with no luck. Is there anything else that I can try to emedy the issue?
Thanks,
-Adam

  • High school basketball games highlight dvd help needed.

Problem: FCE 3.5 stops capturing at every time break.
Background: First of all I don't know much about FCE as it is my sons program and I am trying to help him out. Please bare with me if I don't get the terminology correct.
He is capturing basketball games recorded from a Panasonic model VDR-D210 camcorder that uses mini dvd discs. Because there is no firewire out port on this camera he is capturing thru a Pyro a/v Link analog to DV video converter, then firewire out to his intel imac running 10.4.11.
FCE 3.5 is capturing(video only no audio needed) thru this converter, but stops at every camera time break. He has about 20 games to go and it would be nice to be able to get the whole game without it stopping every minute or two.
He is volunteering to do this project for them but at this rate it will take forever. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

    Hi Jim
DVD camcorders are not the easiest source for video editing. Since you are using an analog to digital converter, you need to change your FCE easy setup. In FCE open the drop down menu "Final Cut HD" > easy set up > DV -converter DV NTSC or DV - converter DV PAL depending on where in the world you are. > set up.
That should take care of your problem. FCE is a complex program. You'll face a steep learning curve to get your video done, especially since it sounds like you're under time constraints. You may be better off using iMovie 6. It's less complicated and is great for editing DV. You can create something that's simple or complicated. And, you'll face less of a learning curve.
If you already own imovie 8, you can download imovie 6 for free here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Good luck. Let us know how your project turns out.

  • OS 10.4 clean install failing in a loop on second DVD - Help?

I am clean-installing 10.4 using the original DVDs on my iMac 20" that is only about 6 months old (PPC.) The first DVD installs fine, it checks the disc etc., then it asks for the second DVD. I pop it in. It hangs for a long time, then it starts to install Keynote 2. A few seconds into this, it restarts the process as though it had just asked for the 2nd DVD and I insterted it. It looped like this for 3-4 hours. The Error Log never reports anything wrong for long enough for me to see. There are no errors while it is hanging.
I've tried it twice clean. The computer ran fine before I did this. I got a new MacBook Pro and am giving my iMac to my sister, and I wanted to clean install it for her. Disaster - now it won't work either way...
Any ideas? Is it just bad media on the second DVD? Is there something I can download?
    Thanks for your help!

Why not try to install using the Custom Install option (you can install just disk 2) and select not to install Keynote and anything else it balks at.
In that way, it might get you up and running and then, as sugggested, contact Apple and try for replacement disk(s).

  • Getting Error Message When Trying To Burn To DVD HELP!!!!!

This is the error message I am getting as soon as I click on the "burn" button.
The following warnings and errors were found during the validation of the current project:
    - There seems to be too much motion menu content in your project. Correct this problem before you continue burning this project.
Any ideas? Please help ASAP, this project is for my grandpa's birthday and I'm trying to finish quickly!
    ~K

It's a good idea to check the Project Info (under the Project menu in iDVD) before burning a disc. If any of the Duration bars are in the red, then you need to go back and edit your project. Also check the Encoding type with your total Project Duration: if the project total is under 60 minutes choose "Best Performance;" if it is between 60 and 120 minutes you'll need to select "Best Quality."
Unless you have freed a lot of GB on your hard drive, iDVD will not be able to burn the disc. You'll need at least 15 -25 GB free on your boot drive in order for the app to do all that encoding. It takes a lot of brainwork to turn a 13+ GB movie project into a 4GB DVD file.
When your project is ready to burn, choose File > Save as Disc Image. This tells iDVD to do all the encoding, and will result in a disc image file that you can mount in your DVD Player app to see that all is well. If so, you can quickly burn the disc image with Disc Utility or an app like Toast. If not, then you haven't burned any coasters. Another advantage is that you will be able to burn duplicates of the disc image very quickly, without going through all that encoding again, should other relatives request a copy.
    Regards.

  • Imovie dvd help needed! Please!

First time making a movie in imovie. I have it exactly the way I want it. Is there a way to burn the way it is in imovie? I really do not want to add any themes from idvd to it. Also, should I make a copy in imovie before trying to do something with it in idvd if there is no way to burn it as the way it is in imovie?
    Thank You

You cannot burn it from iMovie - for one thing it would never fit, nor play anywhere.
You need to let iDVD make a DVD of the movie, and if you don't want any themes:
    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Convert 1080 30p HDV to SD DVD - Help!!

This may have been solved already on here but I couldn't find it so here I go. I have footage shot with the new Sony HVR-S270u HDV camera in 1080 30P mode. I'm trying to figure out what would be the best workflow. I need to be able to give the client SD DVDs now and then later be able to produce blu-ray discs when available. My thought was to edit everything now in HD and then down convert the edited project in compressor with the SD DVD presets. I've tested that method and it works, ok? Have some flicker at times in the motion scenes. Is this the best way or close with some tweeking?
Could I edit it in DVCAM mode to produce the SD DVDs and then when I'm ready for the Blu-ray recapture from the tapes to HD?
Any help and guidance would be much appreciated.
    Mike

I'm shooting mostly school plays and concerts. The lighting is not ideal and usually fairly dim compared to what video or film actually wants. I've found that with the Sony V1U, which is not a great low light camera, shooting in 30p allows the shutter to be as slow as 1/30 of a second, so the camera doesn't need as much auto gain to give me the brightness I want. So there is less noise that way. I capture that in ProRes 422 30p (you have to set it up manually, there is no easy preset for it). When things move rapidly, I get blur rather than interlace "lines". I like it better. Many shoot in 24p for similar reasons: motion blur and film look. I'm never going to film, so 30p is better for me.
The only issue I've ever found is when the light is pretty bright (outside on sunny day), the shutter speed gets faster, like 1/250th of a second or more. Then motion is not so blurred, and you get "judder:" the picture jumps from one image to the next more obviously. If you freeze frame on each one, it is a pretty good snap shot every 1/30th of a second. WIth 60i, you get 1/2 the frame every 1/60th of a second which is the proceeded the other 1/2 1/60th of a second later. Most TV sets show that pretty smoothly, but you can still get interlace lines. It all depends on YOUR preferences and those of your audience.
I find that they both down-rez to SD using compressor quite well and using either HDV or ProRes can produce equally good results. With HDV, you don't get 30p on capture, but 60i with each frame being 1/2 of the 30p frame. I find that the ProRes 30p compresses marginally better on fast action.
My suggestion: get a camera and a tape and shoot bunch of stuff at 1080i60 (outdoors, indoors, high contrast, stripes (H and V and diagonal), low light, lots of light, using ND filters (built into my V1U); then shoot the same or similar stuff in 30p.
Capture all that stuff in HDV native, ProRes 60i and 30p (for the stuff shot in 30p). Put it into FCP timelines and then compress to SD using compressor. Use DVD SP to create a DVD with all of the various tests on it (properly labeled with titles and menus) so you know what's what. Then view that DVD on a variety of TV set and computer monitors (if computers are part of you delivery). You'll know pretty quickly what works for you.

  • Can't eject dvd, help

I wanted to install 10.4 on a new hard drive. Put the universal install dvd in and got a big X (not the OS 10 X). So I then tried to eject the dvd. I've tried F2, F12, Command Apple O F, don't know what to try next. Any help out there? What does the X on startup mean? It starts up, the shows the folder with the ?, then shows the X.

To boot up from a disk you need to hold down the C key right after the chime and until the first color screen appears. Or hold the OPTION key using the same method to get to a boot selector screen.
If you want to remove the disk, hold down the EJECT key (or the press the mouse button) right after you hear the chime and continue holding until the disk ejects.

  • URGENT... DVD help needed...(i know! wrong forum!)

    Hello there...
first of all, sorry for posting this thread here, but i've posted it on the DVDsp forum and we're in such a rush for a solution i'm hoping you'll let it slip by and just help me out here....
we're having a bit of a problem... we have a DVD to produce of a load of clips to be handed out at a big environmental awards ceremony - tonight... it was meant to be picked up from us nearly an hour ago, to be duplicated, but we can't get the **** media to fit on the disc! AArrgghh!!!
all our media, after compression, comes in at 5Gb... obviously we need it at 4.7Gb
    a simple question...
Does DVDsp not have a 'fit to fill' function, where you bring all your assets in, and DVDsp does a simple calculation and compresses everything MORE so that it will fit onto a DVD?
It's really driving us totally nuts, and we're very stressed out... we keep recompressing things, wasting time we just don't have...
how do we fit to fill onto the DVD?
hopefully somebody out there will know...
    a huge thanks in advance,
    All the best.
    J

well.... the disc is made up of nineteen 5min stories and another nineteen 2.5min stories...
It's for a thing called The Ashden Awards which is a big ceremony, for people who run projects involving sustainable energy, that kind of thing... the DVD is part of a package they will hand out to the guests.
... the problem is, we've finished what was asked of us- all the 5min stories to a master tape, to be projected at the ceremony on a cinema screen type thing. Then they asked for this DVD... we asked if it could be on 2 discs, but they said definatly not... one disc only.
We've had limitations put onto us... we're just trying to get through it.
The computer is grinding away right now... i think our biggest error was encoding the audio to AAC.mp4, as that gave us false hope, and we didn't realise that DVDsp was re-encoding it back to AIFF... which jacked up the file sizes again...
we just did a test with the AC3 compression... looks like it's gonna save us.
Andy... i guess in the heat of the moment, and being rushed, with couriers and phones ringing... general chaos and stress... i forgot a forum policy... provide information so people can help... oops.

  • 6GB data won't fit on 8GB dvd, help?

I have a project which altogether contains around 6GB of data (which should fit as i'm using double-layer) however when i go to burn, it says the project will be 41GB. Can somebody help me?

    Hi
iDVD doesn't care about Gbs at all - ONLY time and this is two parts
    • Movie time
    • Menu time
I have 500Mb movies that do not fit on a SL-DVD and 50Gb movies that fit's nicely.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Folder transformed into 'alias' while backing up to DVD - help!

Yet another horrible mess that only Apple seems able to dream up....
I was dragging & dropping folders of documents onto a blank burn folder to create a back-up of them on a DVD. Whilst dragging 3 folders across, somehow 2 of them ended up on the blank DVD window, & the other one finished up in the trash - I have NO idea how; I was not anywhere near the trash, & the other two got across okay. So I thought I would just drag this folder back to where it came from - WRONG - nothing is ever simple in Apple world is it - I now have the folder with 'Alias' next to it. I can open the documents that are in it, but I cannot back it up onto any other disk or memory stick. Which is pretty important as this was the most important of all the folders I was trying to back up! I have tried putting it in the trash again & then clicking 'put back', but I still just get this stupid 'Alias' thing.
Help please; can someone explain to me how I can get this folder back; this must be possible since I did not delete it forever; all I did was put it in the trash, but it's entire nature seems to have been morphed into something else. These things are SO simple in Windows!

While having looked in here a few times since you first posted this issue,
I'm uncertain what to attempt to resolve the underlying problem as it may
have something to do with user permissions, file ownership, and so on.
Usually the admin or main user account owns almost everything it can
control, sometimes this gets messed up and so the files you move may
become copies instead of originals, so you'd get an odd alias instead.
However that said, I'd consider (if possible) complete backups of your
entire system to an externally enclosed boot-capable hard drive with
its own power supply so it does not need computer power to run it.
And then use a clone utility (carboncopycloner, or superduper) and
attempt to make a suitable complete system clone; maybe even with
all your applications and other parts intact, together.
That would take some time, perhaps a few hours. Then with a bootable
and tested clone, consider a fully new installation of your system et all.
Right down to the roots. (This may affect any Recovery partition, btw.)
Also if the hard disk drive is original equipment, a replacement may be
in order at some point. The Apple Hardware Test is not conclusive.
The hard drive may have bad sectors or files that have been ignored or
overwritten, or minor corruption issues that may affect the system.
Sometimes just a restart into SafeBoot, and run repair disk permissions
in Disk Utility's first aid, can help odd file action in a user account. Be
    sure to restart normally...
Hopefully someone who knows more about how to diagnose (terminal or
superuser modes) the OS X can find your thread and reply to it. Several
lengthy procedures could be helpful to help diagnose possible problems.
The readout from Console utility OS X log files may also point out details.
Sorry to say that I don't have a direct answer to your issue, but did have
some experience several OS X versions ago. Now considered vintage.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Cant Burn Data Dvds HELP!

Actually Im not sure I can burn any Dvds at all! Im on a toshiba satelittle L305-s5919....and ive had it for quite a few years but ive never tried to burn anything before. Ive downloaded three diffrent programs and each program gives me basically-rthe same error that the Disc isnt compatible?! but im using the SAME dvds ( DVD-R ) that i use in my desktop and they work just fine on my desktop.... is it because this drive is a rw that i need a diffrent type of disc or something? or is my burning function just dead? UHG!!!!!!!!!! HELP!

I looked up your model.  Your DVD drive is supermulti drive, capable of many media types. The spec states that its DVD-R Maximum Speed Compatibility single layer is 8X.  Are you using optical media that is compatible?  Another type of problems people sometimes have is brand of media.  Some burner is picky about lower quality name brands such as Memorex.
I use ImageBurn free program that many in video forum seem like. It’s usually reliable.

Unfortunately that machine will not boot from firewire It will boot from usb but the port is usb 1, not usb 2, so would be incredibly slow. If you are running a version of the os older than tiger there is a good chance the computer will not recognize the drive. However, you can download a small program called Patchburn which may help. I say may help because I'm not sure that the drive will work if removed from the case. I have tried in the past to do what you want to do and have been unsuccessful. You can buy a new drive for about $40, I think that's a better way to go. Use the external drive as a second drive. I owned the 400 mhz version of that machine and ran an old version of IPhoto on it, also an old version of Photoshop Elements. Don't expect to do any heavy duty photoshop activity with it in any case.
Only other advice is give the machine the full gig of ram it can support if you want to boost performance under Tiger. Also, here's a link to a page which discusses your machine: http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g4.shtml

  • Need to transfer my IMovie to PC to burn a DVD-Help Please

Hello! I created a slideshow with music using IMovie. My MacBook does not have a DVD burner but my PC does. I need to somehow save my slideshow as a file that I can put on my external hardrive and then transfer to my PC to burn a DVD. I tried to do this twice, once it saved as a .mov (or something like this) file and then as a Quicktime file and neither would work on my PC. My PC is older and does not have Vista. Not sure if that makes a difference. I need to do this asap and am hoping not to have to go spend $$ on an external DVD harddrive for my Mac. (Plus, I have called the local Apple stores and no one even carries one.) Thanks in advance for any help in completing my holiday gifts for family!

    Craftymom43,

  • Problems burning dual layer DVDs - help...please

I'm trying to burn a movie onto a dual layer (8.5gb) DVD but my 12" G4 Powerbook doesn't like it. It doesn't recognise the DVD and spits it back out after 30 seconds or so of strange noises, whirring etc. Burning onto regular 4.7gb DVDs seems to work OK, so am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help? FYI the media is DVD +R dual layer, made by Emtec (BASF).
    Powerbook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well I certainly am no expert on media, but I went to Apple's store to look at the PowerBook's spec's. On the 12" it says "Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)" and then on the 17" it says "lot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)." So it appears to me that the 12" does not support dual-layer discs. I know that it doesn't have a dual-layer burner, but perhaps it will not even let you do a dual disc one side at a time. Not sure, just guessing.
