DVD playback: screen goes black in full-screen mode

Hi. Having problems with DVD playback on 1 Ghz Powerbook G4 12 ". When trying to view in full-screen (or even sometimes in maximum) mode, screen simply goes black. Sound still works, but no visuals. As soon as I revert back to Normal size, visuals play fine.
Any ideas ? This is a problem which has developed rather than being with the machine since I bought it. Just for the record, I have 1.25 GB RAM installed and am running 10.4.5.

  • Re: Satellite Pro A200 - Screen goes black after BIOS screen

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have quite a big problem. So any help is welcome and appreciated.
My Satellite Pro A200 goes black after the BIOS screen and a black screen with a blinking cursor. Also just before the screen goes black a bleep can be heard which shows windows is booting.
I can access the toshiba set-up screen but not the safety mode set-up.
    Kind Regards

    Hello
You wrote that you can access the BIOS but have you checked if the HDD is recognized properly? Maybe the computer cannot boot because HDD isnt recognized so you should check this.
If the HDD is recognized I would try a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. It seems that Windows isnt able to start and if you reinstall the whole system it should help to get rid of this. Just go in boot menu and select CD/DVD drive as boot device.
    Check this!!!

  • Goes black in full screen

There are a few issues I am running into on iMOVIE 11 running on lion. The first is that sometimes when editing the preview screen of the video will be stuck on a freeze frame image of a random clip and sort of ken burns it as if the video were a photo. Sometimes it just goes black. When I restart imovie i can get some editing doen then it goes back to the problem. The audio still plays. Also after about 5 minutes of playback in fullscreen mode -the screen will flash off and on and then just cut out, all the while still having some audio. The film I am using was captured by the camera on my computer from the import button in imovie and some from an external hd camera. When I try to export the video it gets to one minute left and then imovie quits unexpectedly or it says there is not enough memory in the heap zone.

The external camera is not HD just found that out

  • Mpeg goes "black" on full screen

I have just bought quicktime pro to enable me to view in full screen mode. The videos play perfectly in small screen but when full screen is selected only a black screen is displayed even though the video seems to still be playing. Codecs seem to be ok according to gspot

The external camera is not HD just found that out

  • Screen goes black / fine in safe mode

My g4 has original 64mb agp card.
when i boot it looks ok just before the mac os screen then it goes black
if i boot in safe mode , everything appears ok , but there is some interference lines on the screen(can change res etc. )
    boots ok in single user.
graphics card has been reseated.. i think it's that , any other ideas before i splash some cash on a new one.
at the same time a pci ethernet card appears to have died. with it installed the mac won't boot just helicopter take off mega fan spinning.
we had an electrical storm , could this have done something nasty?
i have tried pci cards in all slots and they seem ok... i'm worried the agp is stuffed, just don't get why it displays in safe mode, but not normal..
    thanks for any help x

    Opps-
I wasn't asking...I was providing a link to an article telling you what Safe Mode is and does as per your question "what do they do different in safe mode to normal boot... so odd ?" in your reply post to my first.
Click on the blue text "What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?" and you can read for yourself what it does, and why I am suggesting that it could be a problem with Startup items.
I know what, why and how...

  • DVI to VGA screen goes black

I have a G5 and wish to mirror a TV screen to the existing monitor.  I have bought a DVI splitter to DVI and VGA.  One screen goes black ( the Mac Screen ) as the Mac thinks there is only one monitor connected. How do i tell the Mac to have a mirror screen when in Display the options are hidden.  Can you halp please

thanks for this. So I need to use the two monitor ports.  The DVI adapter/ Splitter seems to convert to the VGA for the TV OK.  Can I use a converterto use the ADC Port to DVI connection for the Mac Screen

  • Imac 27" Intel Core 7 CPU. Screen goes black and will not respond except with a push of power button. Second monitor connected via displayport continues to display fine. Apply Store did full hardware scan and all is fine. Did clean wipe from Mavrick back

Imac 27" Intel Core7  CPU 16 Gig RAM. Screen goes black and will not respond except with a push of power button. Second monitor connected via displayport continues to display fine. Apply Store did full hardware diagnostic and all is fine. Did clean wipe from Mavrick back to Mountain Lion but problem remains. Apple Store can do no more.

I did some more digging, it appears to be a backlight problem only. I can see the screen very dimly if I use a bright flashlight in a very dark room. It also seems to run ok if the brightness is turned down a LOT.
So I'm thinking this is a LED driver board issue or the display itself. I'll open it up and check the connection between the two and see if I can get any more clues. At least I can use it somewhat now by dimming the display significantly...

  • When trying to watch a video in full screen, the screen goes black. It doesn't happen with other browsers.

Whenever I try to watch a video in fullscreen mode in Firefox 4.0.1, the screen goes black. This didn't happen in previous versions, and doesn't happen in Safari (which I'm afraid I must switch back to, unless this bug is fixed)
    Thanks.

  • Screen goes black constantly, okay with Windows

My mid-2010 21.5" iMac has been having issues for a while now.  The screen goes black randomly.  This happens anywhere from once a week to once every two seconds for days on end.  I've done plenty of research and seen similar problems but no real solutions.
    Symptoms:
Screen goes to sleep.  Shine a flashlight on it, can still see stuff, so it's just the backlight out.
It'll either happen at startup, before the Apple logo, or after using for a while.
Using a hot corner or keyboard shortcut will temporarily wake it up.
If watching video, sound still plays even though screen is black.
Had it in a 60 degree room with A/C blasting on it, no change.
    Tried resetting PRAM, SMU.
Hardware test was fine, but I can't do this when it's not actually working.
    External monitor works fine.
Really weird-  this does not happen with Windows XP.  It runs fine.  So maybe a software problem?  BUT, the problem occurs when booting from Install DVD.  So maybe not a software problem.  I was going to wipe and re-install but can't even do that due to it blacking out.
I've had it in and they replaced the LCD, didn't help.
I wish it would just permanently stop working so it'd be easier to figure out, as it is, the intermittent nature is driving me nuts.  Can anyone please help?

I meant SMC, not "SMU".  Oops.
billkline, thanks for the input, the fact that Windows works has really got me scratching my head.  That's when I went to reinstall OS X but couldn't when it blacked out on the Snow Leopard Install DVD.  Thoroughly confused now.
Also, starting tonight it now hangs on the gray startup screen for thirty seconds before booting up.  This usually is a one or two seconds before getting the Apple logo.

  • Why My Screen goes BLACK after gaming????

*My Screen goes BLACK after gaming, or exiting Full Screen Mode*. The music keeps playing, but doesnt do anythin! It only shows the mouse pointer so i have to force shutdown. how can i see my desktop and windows??? And it isnt the batteries. Help me thks

I suspect that your game has a bug when switching between full-screen and window mode. When or if this happens again while you are still seeing the black screen press the following three keys: option, command, escape (hold down all three at the same time). You may or may not then see the "Force Quit" window. In any case, release the optioncommandescape key sequence and press the return key. This should quit the game and return you to your normal desktop. You may have to perform the "Force Quit" more than once, two or three times being the most I would expect (that is, if the first time doesn't work).

  • After restore, Pavilion a6250t appears to start then screen goes black.

Have tried F11 restore as well as restore from DVD.  In bothe cases, The system restarts after retsoring the Windows partition, attempts to start Vista then screen goes black, while the CPU appears to be processing the restore.  Suggestions?

XFX Radeon HD 5770 = PC only card, compatibility is not a guarantee
You realize there is EFI type firmware that makes a Mac a Mac? and PC even with "UEFI" don't require or use graphic cards, hence Apple vs PC
you know by going to Apple Store or a vendor like OWC or that says "Mac Pro" Compatible - you can find Apple hardware on Amazon for instance.
Or you buy from a vendor like MacVidCards that deals with GeForce cards (mostly if not exclusively) FOR Mac Pro.
And there are different options for 2008 vs older which is why it is important when you have lack of clarity and have one thread being thread-hijacked in two.

  • When unplugged, screen goes black

plugged in, the macbook has no problems, but as soon as i unplug it, even with a full battery after about 5 seconds, the screen goes black like the book is going to sleep. i have to hit a few keys (random) to wake it up and the screen eventually comes back up and it makes the sound like it's waking up. but again, after about 5 seconds, the screen goes black again.

You may want to try resetting your System Management Controller (SMC):
+*The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.*+

  • My screen goes black and computer freezes.  I know this is a software based problem.  Any suggestions?

About a month ago I installed an Intego software package on my computer.  After it was installed my computer began to randomly freeze.  The freezing would start with the screen going black and then fans spinning up.  Closing the screen didn't help.  Only rebooting did.  I took my Macbook to a repair service and they said that the hardware was perfectly fine.  They recommended a full wipe and reinstall.  I have since uninstalled Intego and for about a week my computer seemed fine.  Since then, however it has started acting up again.  I'm thinking about doing the wipe and reinstall of ML but am hesistant.  Any suggestions what I can do to avoid that?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • IPhone 3GS works fine, unless I the screen goes black after no use.  Then I'm stuck on the white screen until I reset the phone.

The title kind of sums it up.  After having my 3GS for over a year without issue, it started acting up today.  I had my phone on my desk at work, and had been checking my e-mail, news, and web intermittently throughout the morning.  I set the phone down, in it's typical spot without issue.  No dropping, no hits, no...nothing.  Just set it on the desk and go about my work.
The next time I pick up the phone to use it, and hit the button, I'm greeted with an all-white screen.  WTH?  If I press and hold the home button the phone makes a "dunk" soud, like maybe I'm enabling the voice feature.  Long story short, I can restart the phone, and reset the phone, and it's fine.
UNTIL the screen goes dark from inactivity.  From that point on, it will ONLY come back in the full-white-screen mode UNTIL I reboot it again, in which case it's again functioning normally...UNTIL the screen goes black from inactivity.  I can hear the phone make text-alert noises as texts come in, my e-mail continues to download regularly, etc.  But it stays stuck in this white screen anytime the battery saver turns the screen black.
    Any ideas on this?

So, I've received and installed a replacement digitizer screen / component.  The good news is that the digitizer works just fine!  Screen swipes, finger tracking, etc are all great.
The bad news...is that it didn't fix my white screen issue.  Same symptoms...everything works fine at boot.  As long as I keep the screen from going dark, everything continues to work fine (rapidly consuming battery, of course).  If, at any time, the screen goes dark (get a call, accidentally press the top button to shut down the screen, etc), the screen will only come back on as a white screen.
All touch components are working fine at this time.  I've grown to remember where the "power down" swipe is located, so I press and hold the power down button, then swipe where I know the "power down" swipe is located.  Phone will shut down.
Restart the phone, and repeat the process.  Anyone have any other ideas?

  • Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

All I want to do is send my family the pictures for them to be able to see them on most dvds and use manually control.
If you want set top DVD player playback, I suggest you create a a series of slideshows IN iDVD that each contain a MAXIMUM of 99 images. Do not create the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie.
Is there an easier way to do this, bypassing iDVD?
Some DVD players will play a disc containing jpeg images
