DVD player only shows video under Intel graphics

I have a Macbook Pro 15", i7 2.66, and just noticed that Apple's DVD Player app will only show video under Intel graphics. When it's switched to the Nvidia 330M, all I get is a black screen (+ audio).
Oddly, the VLC app works fine, so I'm (sort of) hoping this is a software issue. Anyone else experience this?

Agreed it is a shame. This is the second time to hear of this glitch. I do not know if it constitutes a bug however.
If you want to report it to Apple's engineers, send a bug report via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number thus starting a dialog with engineering.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • Using DVD Player, the show goes back to menu after every chapter, even though I selected "Play Entire Episode".

It only does this on Reading Rainbow DVDs so far: Using DVD Player, the show goes back to menu after every chapter, even though I selected "Play Entire Episode".  It does this whether the laptop is plugged in or is using battery power.  How do I get it to play all??  Thanks.

Turns out it was NOT the software or the Mac. I bought a portable DVD player and this problem happens with it, too.

  • Movies only show up under Songs LIst

On my iPod Classic 80GB, movies (purchased and manually added) only show up under the songs list. I cannot change the info (movie, tv show) in iTunes because that is not an option for files in the songs list. I have been able to re-add a couple of the manually added movies and they show up in the right place, but the purchased movies I cannot do this with. This only became a problem today and has not been a problem in the past. They show up under the songs list only and not in the movies even though the info shows them as mp4. Any help is appreciated.

I would say that is a good indication that the movies are not actually synced. Check your sync settings in iTunes and also make sure that there is actually enough disk space available on the ATV for the movies that have yet to sync.

  • DVD Player not playing video DVDs

This is a new problem on my MacBook Pro. The DVD player has played videos in the recent past with no problem. Now, when I insert a DVD, the computer attempts to read the disk (at least it sounds that way) and then ejects it. I have repaired permissions and researched on the discussion forums, even downloaded VLC to no avail. The CD player is working fine and all non-video DVDs are being read.

are these legit dvd's from the store or burnt DVD's? also try running a lens cleaner thru the system

  • How do you save and burn a movie to play on a dvd player to show on your tv

I finished a movie, and saved it as a MP4 file. How do you save and burn a movie to play in a dvd player and show on your tv.

I found an iDVD program through Softonic. Do you know anything about reliability and if it is safe to download this one? If not do you have any suggestions for one I might download.

  • Mac Pro DVD player not showing picture, only audio

When playing a DVD, my DVD player on Mac Book Pro does not show the picture, you only hear the audio. Any ideas?

This started yesterday for me too--audio works fine, but picture is gone. I tried 4 different DVDs to be sure, and all of them have no picture. The screen is completely black. I guess it's time to go to the Genius Bar...

  • My DVD player only plays in black and white

Just got a new Toshiba HDTV (model no. 39L1350U) and am trying to hook up the DVD player. Got sound, but it only shows a black and white picture. The only way I get any picture at all is by plugging the yellow of the standard AV cable into the green jack. I know this is not right, but don't know where to plug in the yellow connection since there is no yellow jack on the back of the TV. Am I going to need a different cable? My DVD player is an old Sony.
    Thanks.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My DVR670KU is about six year's old now.  Been getting only a black/white picture.  Was using and S-Video connecting cable to the TV.  When I connected using an HDMI cable, now have the color again.  Believe the S-Video cable failed/went bad.  Was previously getting color from it though.

  • No audio playing on DVD player, only on computer

I just created my first DVD.
The source is a DV camcorder brought into iMovie and imported into iDVD
Everything went fine on my computer, but when i brought it to my DVD player hooked up to my TV there was no sound, just a buzz (yes I checked another DVD which worked fine on the TV). Checking again on my computer, the DVD played (from the DVD) WITH sound. However, for some reason there is no sound when played through the TV DVD player
I am working in an international environment. I thought perhaps the issue is related to that so I tried making the DVD both as NTSC and as PAL with the same results.
    ( I followed instructions from <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165256> and <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50156>)
The DVD player is a Hyundai multizone-multisystem HU-D6240. The TV is multisystem and the DV camcorder is NTSC.
Note that when I exported the movie from iMovie to qt in PAL format I also specified 16 bit stereo audio - however the original DV was recorded on the camcorder with 12 bit audio. - Does this matter?
Under project info in both the NTSC and the PAL version I see the mov files have both audio and video.
    Any ideas?!

ive had the same problem with the audio (music) dropping off of my burned dvds and found it to essentially be either one or both of these problems:
    1) your Quicktime installation is corrupt. Locate the quicktime plist file and delete it in your Library. Then download the newest Quicktime only installer (currently 7.4.5) and reinstall.
    2) If you have Quicktime Pro, export your videos to a standard definition(SD) MP4. I've found that although the .mov files will play correctly, for some reason with all of the video and audio tracks integrated in the MP4 instead of separate, helps to maintain its integrity.
    hope this helps!
Also, to help maintain the audio during the movie file (slideshow), I have Quicktime Pro, which allows me to add the music files to the .mov files separately,so after ive exported the keynote presentation to QT, I added the music files, then exported the file to an MP4. Used that MP4 file in iDVD and the audio sticks. The advantage is that you can also control more specifically how the music is played during your presentation, if transitions and timing are important to matching the music precisely.

  • DVD Movies only show in green

I have an Insignia with built in DVD player.  It worked fine (in Color) for the first year or so.  Now no matter what I do
every movie only shows in Green.  Any suggestions?

sounds like an issue with the internal dvd player.  I would try connecting an external to the TV and see if you get the same results.  Sounds like an issue between the output of the dvd player to the display (all internal)    If it works externally then i would stick with the external solution.

  • IPhoto events only show videos, no pictures

For some reason, my iPhoto events started showing videos only, no pictures. I can see the pictures on the thumbnails, or when I open them using Photos instead of Events, or when I open the events (projects) on Aperture. I already rebuilt the database but nothing changed. If I import new pictures (thus creating a new event), I see them on the new event's thumbnail, but once again if I go into the event nothing shows up.
This happened around the same time iMovie analyzed the iPhoto library for videos, for a new project I'm making on iMovie. Now iMovie can't see the iPhoto videos anymore.
Any ideas why this is happening or how to fix it?
    Thanks.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Adobe Flash Player only shows black box on most websites.

Adobe Flash Player 11.4.402.287 is only showing a black box but not loading or showing any buttons on some/most websites. I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 and the problem exists on websites such as espn.com but works on others such as hulu and youtube. It exists on Google Chrome and Firefox.  I had some adblock and flash add-ons in Firefox, but I have the add-ons disabled. And the problem exists in both browsers.  It has been a problem for less than a month but I am not sure entirely how much longer.  I was outside of the US until recently, the problem may have corresponded with return but I am not sure. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas? Much appreciated.

I am facing the same issues as well. In particular, I can't play flash videos on www.blizzard.com as the video controls doesn't show up.
YouTube and Facebook flash videos work fine.
After deleting ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player and ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player, the controls appeared.
Perhaps you may want to try that?

  • DVD Player has no video?

Verizon set up my configuration incorrectly during installation and I had reconfigured to work properly.  I was working fine for several months and then one day the DVD player stopped working.  I have sound but no video.  The dvd player works fine as I tested it on a TV running DirectTV.  I called Verizon and they told me that they did not change any signals and they do not support any external connections.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.   I have been without my DVD player for over a month and I miss it!

whether a dvd player works or doesn't work has nothing to do with the fios itself.  it has to do with whether a) its working or b) its connected properly, and c) if you're accessing it properly.
best way to get it fixed is to take a look at it, and how it's hooked up.  I don't suggest plugging it into the verizon box like a chain (wall cable to the verizon stb, to the dvd player to your tv)   but imo it's better to have them seperated from one another.  meaning wall cable to the verizon stb to the tv.
then seperately plug your dvd player directly into the tv.
your tv has the ability to switch between different sources.
a source is what is providing the picture.   your dvd player is a source and your stb is a source.  so to your TV that is two sources.
If it works TODAY on a different tv or different box, then we know that it's a working box, it might just be a simple wiring issue or tv option for us to get you back on track.
Now Verizon does provide wiring diagrams for how it should be plugged into their box.  Use the below diagrams.
If you need help beyond the diagrams below, let us know how it is hooked up today, and we can tell you the best way to have it hooked up.  there are a couple different options to do that.

You can see it, its rather a slow 7 mins as I am drawing in real time, but you can hurry it by whooshing through if you like, you see the subject of the drawing towards the end to compare with the drawing.

  • DVD Player 4.6 Video Has Breakup/Interference

My DVD player was working fine, then the video started breaking-up with yellow dash lines at areas where there is movement onscreen. DVD's that played previously without problem, now play poorly. The audio is not affected.

    First, welcome to the discussions.
There could be any number of things that could cause this.
    The media you are using.
    How it was burned
Who burned it and what software was used.
Are you talking about Commercial Movies, or a Disk that was burned.
Sometimes VLC Player will solve the problem.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738
Download it and see if it makes any difference.
If it doesn't solve your problem.
Come back and tell us what is on the disk.
What brand and speed media was used.
What software was used to burn the project.
How does it preform on a stand alone DVD Player and your TV.
If it still acts up it more than likely sounds like poor quality Media.
    Tell us all you can.
