DVD Player to FCP?

I want to capture from my DVD player straight into FCP - (I'm putting together actor's showreels so we have no issue with copyright) - I understand I need a converter. In other posts it's mentioned that you can connect your DV device. I can't as my camcorder (Sony HC1 HDR) has no video in.
My question is what device do I need to be able to capture scenes from DVD's from a DVD player to my FCP.
(I've tried a few rip programs and MPEGstreamclip but it takes SOOO long and you can't always rip the DVD's because of their codes etc.)
Thanks
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   FCP 5.1.4

The cheap way is to ask whoever made the discs if they are macrovision encrypted.
or
download a copy of mactheripper and see if it detects macrovision on the discs when inserted in your computer
The expensive way is to buy a load of kit and cross your fingers you don't just get a blue screen when you try to digitise the DVD's
NB: MPEGstreamclip would let you open the VOB files on the DVD's and export them as DV footage for Final Cut without the expense of a Canopus box in the first place.

  • Professional DVD Recorder for FCP??

Is there a pro DVD recorder/player that can be controlled like a deck (9-pin/FW or both) for input and output of Final Cut Pro? I often need to capture offline clips of sports events that are 3 to 4 hours long. I've been using Amerisoft's DVD ripper, but I have to capture the each long title of the DVD and I only need a few seconds at a time. Setting up output and doing crash records to Dbeta or similar is also quite laborsome. It would be nice to be able to control a DVD player within FCP and capture the clips like you can from a tape.
    Thanks in advance,

Is there a pro DVD recorder/player that can be controlled like a deck (9-pin/FW or both) for input and output of Final Cut Pro?
    No....no such thing exists.
Why are the sports events master footage on DVD?
With MPEG STREAMCLIP you can mark IN and OUT points and import only what you want.

  • Anyone knows a DVD player for TV which can play QuickTime movies /FCP movie

I am trying to find a DVD player for my television which can play a QuickTime or Final Cut Pro movie which is on a DVD. Do you know one ?
    I have a FCP movie (720 x 576 ) transfed to a DVD ( UDF format ).
I have tryed to play the DVD in many DVD plyers, but they all say " unknown file format "

playing them through AppleTV, can do the trick?
yes and no. The AppleTV is a terribly crippled product. Seems to have been launched with only a few of its capabilities enabled and then it sort of got forgotten.
Before investing in an AppleTV box, be sure to read the product reviews from the MAcintosh magazines and especially the PC magazines. You want to get objective information about this weirdly limited box.

  • How do i take a project from FCP to DVD so it plays on a DVD Player

Help, i need to export a project from FCP in a format which will play on through a UK DVD player and TV. What format do i export to ?
I then understand i need to import this into DVD Studio Pro set it up to Loop and then burn to DVD R, is this correct ?
    Help please
    Hillster

    Export QT/Current Settings/Self Contained/Audio and Video.
Drop it into Compressor and choose the DVD preset that matches the total number of minutes of video and also use dolby2 audio.
    Import into DVD SP.
Delete the menu in the graphic view. Set the track to first play and loop or end jump to itself.
Drop the video and audio assets into that track.

  • DVD from DVDSP won't play in dvd player?

    Hi.
I shot some HDV footage on a Sony-Z1, edtied it in FCP 5.1, exported a Quicktime movie (HDV 1080i50) from FCP, took this QT file to Compressor 2.1 and made a H.264 6.75Mbps.mov. In DVDSP I have made both a HDDVD and also tried to make a new project and a DVD as a SP (the exported files used were a MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16:9.m2v, both 1080i (HVD res) and 1080i (std. res)). Have tried to burn all of the different DVDSP projects on DVD -R and +R's . Also tried to change the settings for Red laser and Blue laser. All of the DVD's works on various computers, but none of them works on a HD DVD player. Have tried several different dvd players.
Does anybody know what might be the problem???
    Best regards,

If you look through these forums you will notice that no one has come up with any answers for compatability PlayBack problems.
I have looked for years and read the entire manual but still Im making great DVDs for my Macs but watch out if you give them to any one else,
Im about to figure out how I can get the most out of DVD burning in Toast, at least I know the DVDs will play anywhere!

  • Reposting this - bringing dvd footage into FCP - progressive scan

I occasionally have clients that need me to bring footage into their projects from a dvd or vhs. I'm looking into getting something that can do both NTSC & PAL and I've come across this product:
    Sharp DV-NC80
    6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VHS/S-VHS VCR & DVD, CD-R, V-CD Combo Player - Multi System, Multi Zone
My only dilemma is that the dvd player does not have progressive scan. Can anyone let me know if that should matter or not and what progressive scan is for? (I read the jagged edge article, but does progressive scan affect how FCP digitizes dvd material as well?) Thank you.

Unless you are bringing the material in via a capture card, you can't take advantage of the 480p scanrate anyway...

  • Getting DVD footage into FCP

I've got a DVD-R with my showreel burned on to it. I can play this on my Mac or on a DVD player etc but have not been able to work out how to get this footage onto my FCP in order to edit it further. If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.
    Cheers

Consider not taking the original footage back into FCP.
Demux the .vob's using StreamClip, to their native .m2v video and whatever audio format was used, and create a new DVD SP project using those ready to burn assets.
In the track view, you can trim the already encoded assets - you may need to re-render the audio, or work with audio in aiff.
Prepare new footage only in fcp, and encode in sections to new .m2v mpegs. Then, insert the newly encoded footage in with the originally encoded footage, using DVD SP as a rudimentary splice editor, in its track view. It is not frame accurate - you not be able to cut exactly where you would like to.
It will be harder this way, but, you won't loose any quality over the original DVD, becasue you never decode and re-encode the original MPEG's.
If this is too limiting, or difficult, then decode the lot and work in FCP - there will be a quality hit for decode / re-encode as David rightly says.

  • How to Import DVD content to FCP for editing

My clients always bring us DVDs (both PAL and NTSC formats) for us to insert certain segments into the FCP project.
    Questions:
    1. We can import the PAL VOB file into FCP PAL project, but the images seems to be broken up in thick horizontal lines. It seems to be related to the interlace but we cannot fix it in FCP, not matter using deinterlace, switch field, de-flicker.
    2. No audio can be import in this way.
We cannot digitally import those DVD files into FCP and we can only bring the DVD into FCP using component signals and analog audio through a DVD player.
Any suggestion on how to import the DVD digitally into FCP, both audio and video?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike
(rem: those DVDs are most created by other post facilities, they are not encrypted movie DVDs, so this problem is not related to encryption or region codes.)

Did you search the forum for DVD ripping? This is a very common problem and discussed all the time
You have to rip the DVDs to a format that FCP understands like, for instance, DV video
You can use software like DVxDVD a decent commercial product or MPEG Streamclip which is free but requires Apple MPEG Playback Component to make it work

  • Problem to playback 16/9on DVD Player...original export HD to SD 16/9

    Hi,
I need some serious help on that one ( need to complete the project for this Friday..)
Basically I created an edit on FCP on a timeline with the following settings:
    -aspect ratio:HDTV 720p (16/9). As it has been shot with a JVC camera(GY-HD111)on a HDV 720p format..
-Pixel aspect ratio: Square ( no anamorphic)
    -field dominance:none
    -Quictime video settings, compressor:HDV 720p25
then I exported to sequence trough compressor for DVD Studio Pro, under the following settings:
-DVD best quality 90 mn (the duration of the sequence is 10mn)
(making sure the Mpeg 2 format includes a PAL-25 fames-16/9 settings..)
Then, after creating my menu on DVD Studio Pro, again making sure that the following settings were selected:
-Display mode of the menu:16/9 Pan Scan and Letter-box
-Display mode of the attached tracks:16/9 pan scan and letterbox..
I then did a build/format to burn the DVD.
Now the problem that is happening is that for some reason (and i tried on different DVD Players and screens)The DVD players Play the DVD on a 16/9 screen as a 4/3..so it means that when I set upthe screen on a 16/9 format the picture become stretched and on a 4/3 it appears normal but of course the borders are cropped...Now when I build and burn the same project with 16/9 letterbox(only)settings it works fine but the idea is to be able to watch the video as a 16/9 full screen..I really don't understand what is happening..tried many options still not working..Would anyone be abble to help me with this ? (in the settings of build/format there is a tick for lossless linking in destination...would it be related?) I am quite lost on the all thing especially I need to burn the DVD for tomorrow..Please help me!!
    julie

First off, yes, 16:9 Letterbox is the Display Ratio you want to use in DVDSP. Unless you actually do want the edges cropped off (and common request for menus, at least). In that case, select 16:9 Pan-Scan. The 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox choice in DVDSP is not what you'd normally want to use, because it depends on the TV Shape setting on your DVD Player.
Speaking of the TV Shape setting (sometimes labeled as Aspect Ratio) on your DVD Player, make sure the players that are connected to your 16:9 sets are correctly set to 16:9 or Widescreen (manufacturers use different naming conventions).

  • Apple's DVD Player: audio in-sync. External DVD Player: audio out of sync

I exported my Sequence from FCP to QT, used compressor to make m2v and ac3 (Dolby) files, then used DVD SP to burn a DVD.
When I play the DVD on my Mac Pro using Apple's DVD Player, MPEG Streamclip or VLC, the audio is in sync with respect to the images, FCP's Canvas and FCP's QT export.
But when I play the DVD using any of three different external DVD players, the audio momentarily drifts out of sync by 30 to 40 frames, near the end of my 30-minute program, but is back in sync after about a minute, when the shot at hand ends and the next shot begins.
More specifically, it's as if the video lags by about 30 to 40 frames, but there is no stuttering or other obvious visual sign that this is happening.
Why would Apple's DVD Player, MPEG Streamclip or VLC play the audio in sync while these external DVD Players play it out of sync?
I should add that in order to verify that the TVs to which the external DVD players are attached are not the source of the problem, I monitored the audio using headphones connected directly to the audio outputs of the DVD Players as well as connected to the headphone jacks of the TVs, and there was no difference, i.e. in both cases, the audio drifts out of sync momentarily, as I describe above.
I can only think that DVD SP is muxing the m2v and ac3 file in such a way that software DVD players can demux it without difficulty, but hardware DVD players cannot.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

Please tell us what was wrong.

  • DVD freeze when play back on  dvd player

    Hello,
I create a DVD with DVD SP 3.01, When I play back the dvd in 3 brand of dvd player it freeze after 12 min of playback for about 2 sec and after continue to play to go to an other freeze about 10 to 12 min after. It does that in dvd with 25 min and more. If I do a small dvd of 10 min I see no freeze. I ckeck the MPEG2 file made by FCP and there is no freeze inside of it. I also put the QT directly in DVD sp ( encode it before burn ) and I have the same problem. Any idea...
    thanks

It may be the brand of disc. Try Verbatim DVD-R or Verbatim DVD+R DL.

  • DVD menu title selection on DVD player with DVD's burn from iDVD

Regarding DVDs burned with iDVD 6.0.3, I have burned multiple DVDs with 6 buttons on the main menu page each of which links to a short film. On the menu screen when I push the right arrow button on the DVD remote not all the menu buttons light up. In addition to pushing the right arrow button on the remote, I have to push the up or down arrow button on the remote (to the DVD player hooked up to the TV) to get to some of the buttons in my DVD menu to be selectable. The buttons are arranged by me in a grid sort of pattern. Is there a way in iDVD I can get all the buttons to be selectable using only the right or left arrow keys on the DVD player remote? Do you understand what I am asking?

    Hi powerbookaid
And welcome to apple discussions. It's actually difficult to find standalone versions on ebay and CL / Apple's FCP and DVDSP. I found them myself but it took me a very long time. Not always something you can do overnight. But if you are very patient something will show up eventually.
If you need something now that works (although I advise caution as in backup your dvd or video_TS first) then consider this app for much less money (donationware):

  • "Rolling" interference on DVD player

I've run out of ideas so hoping somebody here can think of something I haven't tried.
The office just bought a new DVD player (Panasonic DVD-S53) and VHS (JVC HM-DT100) to transfer video/audio to FCP. Both replaced previous models that needed to be retired. Both are going into a Comprehensive Video Group CVG-4X4s vertical interval switcher.
Here's the problem: the DVD player is having some sort of interference problem that is causing a rolling video 'artifact.' We've tried everything we can think of. Switched cables, switched it from SVHS to regular video out, moved the DVD player away from all electronics, plugged it into another surge protector. Moved the Switcher
It only is affecting the DVD (the output of both goes from the Switcher via the same cable and the VHS looks perfect).
    Any other suggestions?

Huh...other threads have said that using things like MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize will make footage look worse due to the whole 'uncompressing/estimating of missing frames' thing...so who knows what to believe?
Unfortunately need to use DVDs sometimes...some publicists only have B-Rolls on DVD, actors need Demo Reels, etc. etc. etc.
Seem to have figured a work-around (having it go directly to the Sony DSR-45 instead of the switcher...causes a few more steps, but the interference has all but vanished. Still don't understand why the DVD player is the only device affected but...there you go!)

  • Widescreen cropping on DVD player

    Hi
after exporting a sequence from 'Photo to Movie' and writing to DVD - when I play it through my home DVD player the sides get cropped off. I think it has something to do with the fact that its an anomorphic export (dont know much about the process)
my question is anybody know of any app ie. iMovie, iDVD FCP etc would be able to 'un'anomorphosise' the video
    thanks for your help
    N

Well.. let me go into more detail about the problem
The when played, the screen stays at 4:3 with 2 big black bars either side, but the movie playing has been strectched 2 widescreen so that the sides are therefor cropped off.
I've experienced this with only 1 or 2 commercial DVDs on this player - im guessing its something to do with the player getting confused with the aspect ratio or something.
Having said this - when I look at the movies info I get the following:
    Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062),
    Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz
Which looks as though it hasnt actually been exported as anomorphic after all
mmmmm... strange. my only other similar DVD autoring experience was with a widescreen video from FCP (written wit h iDVD) this worked fine - probably because the footage was 4:3 with bars top and bottom
mmmm... the fact that iDVD6 says it now writes in widescreen looks promosing, but its hard to tell if it would make much difference

  • Dvd behaves one way on computer, one way on dvd player

i've burned a recent project in dvdsp4. the menu page has only one button 'play'. when you hit play on the simulator the main feature plays back perfectly. if i take a burned dvd and stick it in a domestic dvd player it behaves the same way.
if i put the dvd into any of the macs here it's a little bit different. when i hit play on the remote (or hit enter) the menu page seems to linger and the picture only jumps to the feature after the audio has started.
i think i've explained this really badly. anyone else seen this?

i discovered something last night. i get this behaviour with video files that i've exported from fcp using compressor to make 90min best quality mpeg 2 with aiff and ac3 audio. looks great. now, if i export a plain dv 48k pal picture from fcp and let dvdsp do the encoding it don't get the lag running the video_ts folder from the dvd player. it's weird.
i'm going to try a few things today (ie leave out the ac3 files, lower quailty settings, etc) and see what happens. would you try the same?
    many thanks.
fwiw i actually really like dvdsp.
