DVD-R DL woes.. more of a RANT!

Hey Guys, just have to let off some steam!!!
scenario:
i have a DVD-9 project that needs to get QC'ed and approved by a client.
back in the day, we would just split the project in 2, basically making 2 DVD-5 for approvals.
of course the client has no clue, nor does he care about this, since he wants to see the WHOLE project together and definitely rejected the idea of compressing the project to a DVD-5 just for naviagtion and playback.
so he requested a DVD-R DL disc, to which i informed him there might be some compaibilty issues with players and i cannot guarantee playback.
he said whatever, just give me a disc, so i gave him one.
here's the kicker, he says it won't play back correctly!
he says: "the disc will not play the last 2 segments correctly! when i try to access them, the player pauses, searches for a while and then eventually plays back."
WHAT A SURPRISE!!!
technically, i came to the conclusion that the 2 video segments he is referring to just happen to land on the layer 1, since they are the last 2 VTS's. everything else plays fine. since i created a PTP and not a OTP playback, i am confident this is the issue.
of course, in software emulation AND a computer drive, the discs plays back as expected!
i try to explain to him the situation and starts giving me grief since his project is going to replication via DLT and i assured him that the discs are fine!
GRRRRRR!!!!!!! in this case ignorance is NOT BLISS!!
anyway, have a great day everyone!
Mikey M.

Hey Trai,
i totally agree with you!
however, i guess my little internal burner has burnt it's last DVD+R DL disc since i keep getting an error in toast:
Sense Key Illegal Request
Sense Code 0x26
Invalid Field in Parameter List
doing some extensive searching on my particualr error came up with a general consensus agreeing that indeed it was the burner.
i wouldn't doubt that since i burn at least 50 discs a month and have had this baby for almost a year (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D).
that's why i didn't offer a DVD+R DL since i have had more usccess with this media (i only use verbatim).
anyway, thanks for the insight

    Hi all
I'm trying to archive mini dv to dvd as easily as possible, my tapes are 62 min
long and if I put 2 tapes into imovie I already exceed buning limit.
One step dvd only lets me import one tape and then decides to complete the task of burning.
Should I buy better software or my other method could be to pipe the camcorder into my panasonic set top dvd burner, but I'm not sure if I'll
lose some quality it only has s video connection and no fire wire.

    I've solved my own problem.
While importing to one step dvd and while on that pane I click and hold a word
on the top bar of the screen wich sort of freezes everything and with my other
hand I pause the play on the camera and eject the tape 2 seconds before
the tape is about to come to its end, then load a rewound tape back in and
push play then let go of the mouse or even click one more time on the menu bar. I don't think one step knew what just happened, but there maybe blue
screen recorded while I changed tapes. We'll see.

Loading content from multiple MiniDV tapes to one DVD
    Posted: Nov 1, 2005 3:05 PM
I am being offered this "One Touch" feature on iDVD to copy my Camera footage to a DVD. I am wondering what the best process is to follow if I wanted to, say, merge :30 minutes of content from one MiniDV and :20 minutes of content from another. Should I be uploading to iMovie instead? If I have the ultimate objective of a. having copies on DVD instead of MiniDV and b. using the content for video editing in iMovie, what is the best process to follow?
    1. Move all MiniDV to DVD and then work from that?
    2. Import clips into iMovie and move them to iDVD?
    Tips, best practices, advice appreciated.

    Brian,
It's pretty much agreed here that the best storage medium for your MiniDV tapes, is the tape itself.
I tried OneStep once. Yuk. I bring everything into iMovie HD.

  • My Quad experience- noise, DVD, and so much more!

Just wanted to share my experiences so far... My Quad has arrived! Set up was very simple once I cleared the old Sawtooth out of the way. (I wasn't prepared since my ship date was supposed to be the end of December.) Anyway, so far, so good. Updates went well. I'm waiting on RAM and a second HD before I can really get to work.
As far as the noise issue, it is definitely louder than I expected. It is quieter than my 500 G4. The G4 was under the desk while I have the Quad on top of the desk, pretty close to my ears. But the fans constantly run and at higher revs than I expected. They do slow down after initial start-up, so it's no wind tunnel, and they don't rev up and down, they are steady, but I may move the Quad to the floor. I imagine if it's not right near my head (with the fans pointing straight at me) it may seem quieter. And it's just fan noise- on my G4, the fans were louder and they made the case vibrate and there was all kinds of noise. So really, I'm not complaining, right now the sound is acceptable to me. I've only put in about 4 hourse of use, we'll see what it's like once I get used to it and put in some more time on it.
I have yet to even use the DVD burner but I do have an embarrassing story. I've had Macs all my computing life. They're very intuitive to use. 99% of the time I have no need for the manual. (Which I assume Apples knows seeing the small manuals they include with their products.) I sat there for about 4 minutes trying to figure out how to open the DVD tray. I looked all over the tower, all over the desktop, all the menus, searched "help". I couldn't figure it out! There is no button on/near it! I thought maybe it was touch sensitive- that didn't work. I had to use the manual! I hadn't even looked on the keyboard! My G4 had the smaller keyboard, not the extended style. And as you all know, there it is, right on the keyboard, the open/eject button. I am so glad none of my friends (who think I'm the "Apple Expert") were there. I felt so dumb. Scheesh.

Quad.   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)

A nice box indeed -- had no idea these things
    were so heavy.
As for first impressions ... well, let me preface
this by saying I have no idea if os x was
preinstalled or not. Since I never got an answer
regarding whether os x needed a fast boot
drive or whether the caching could be countered
with RAM, I picked up a raptor last night and
    popped it straight in.
Now, I got the wireless keyboard/mouse combo. The
pamphlet for the combo says "put all the batteries
in and follow the steps in the g5 manual, you
will be prompted to assign your mouse/kbd to the
g5'. The g5 booklet says 'if you have a wireless
    combo, follow the instructions there.'
    This does not bode well
So, the first thing I notice is that, since the
kbd and mouse do not work until they are assigned,
and since apple sent only the wireless kbd and mouse,
there is no way to get the OS X dvd in.
Well, five minutes of playing with the drive door
and a paper clip later, it's in [note for the
guy who mentioned not being able to do this before:
slide the drive covering down with your fingers].
OK, os x is booting and everything looks nice in
the ol' aquos I'm using as a screen. I get a screen
indicating [no text] that I need to put batteries
in the mouse and turn it on. Well they're in, it's
on, the red light is going, in fact I'm scrolling
the **** thing across the bluetooth antenna ...
nothing. Eventually the screen goes way and I am left
with an unresponsive keyboard and mouse, with
a prompt to choose my language.
Pop open the desk, get the emergency usb kbd and
mouse I have in there for troublesome laptops,
and go through the install. Not being able to eject
without the paperclip maneuvar makes things
interesting, but it keeps me on my toes.
After that, everything seems to go OK. When the
    files finish copying I'll reboot.
Definitely a nice machine, but they really need
to work on that wireless keyboard/mouse deal. After
this and the whole ordering/shipping debacle, every
one of my friends who extolls the ne'er-do-wrong
nature of apple owes me a pint. Or three.

I've developed a site for educators using Visual Communicator in schools, but also applicable to any VC user:
    http://www.SchoolTVmadeEasy.com

You can turn off a preference in FCP's user prefs, to bring all windows to front on activation. That way only the windows you click on come in front of the DVD player.
But probably a better way to handle the problem is to use the tab+apple key to bounce back and forth between the two apps. Try that...
My book will work just fine in FCP 5, comes with a ton of media to work with, and will hone your skills I think.
Also Apple's Pro Training series is much the same, and are written well. I'm working now on a training DVD...

  • Converted DVD files, Now I Need More Help

I converted my DVD files so that my video iPod can read them, but now I have another problem. It would seem that a DVD has 8 or more seperate files that contains different portions of the actual movie.
How can I get all of those different chapter files into one streaming video?

You need to install itunes (the actual program) on your C: drive. The program and preference files don't take up that much space.
Then put the actual music, podcasts, videos, etc on the exHD. Use itunes to do this, not Win Explorer, so itunes will be able to find the files after the move.

  • Is there a way to create a slideshow viewable with a DVD player?

Hi there, is there amongst the Apple programs (or else) something that would allow me to show my digital photos on TV with a DVD player? Manually commanded with the remote, or with auto time lapse, fading or transitions?

I tested both Photo Magico and iDVD. Both produce a nice slideshow with good image quality when previewed on the computer. PhotoMagico has some really professional grade blending and zooming effects, and allows placement of multiple sound tracks, which is not possible with iDVD where you just drop one file and it plays in buckle.
The problem with both is that when the slide show is encoded, it looses too much quality! Images loose their detail, their colour depth, and they flicker inacceptably. The worst is with PhotoMagico who sends the already compressed file to iDVD to be compressed again and burnt. The loss of quality from the very neat preview to the resulting DVD is enormous. Sent to Toast Titanium, it's a little better but aliasing effects are still very annoying.
I then tried a slideshow made directly in iDVD. The quality is merely acceptable, still not professional. The images are so compressed that they loose their details, and the edges of the frames and every straight line in the images flicker...
Compressing an original 5 Gb slideshow made of JPEG files to 1,5 Gb seems an enormous rate of compression. Is this the way it is with those programs, or have I missed some settings somewhere? Is there no way to preserve the initial image size when passed to DVD? Alternatively, would the pro version DVD Studio Pro have more flexibillity? It's there on my computer, but the interface is turning me away! ...
    Thanks again for any hints!

  • DVDs to transfer music

I know that you can move music from one iTunes account to another using CDs, but can you also transfer songs on DVDs? Or can DVDs only be used for data backup? (I mean, how could a DVD serve as data backup if you couldn't take songs from a DVD backup and put them back on your fixed computer?) But when I tried this, iTunes and the computer didn't recognize the DVD in the disk drive (and it's a new-enough computer that it should...)
new iPod w/ 30GB   Windows XP

DVD Decrypter was developed to make a backup of your DVDs, it's as simple as that. Unfortunately, the developer was ordered to stop development via a court ruling/order or else face imprisonment. Simple as that.
I use it to backup DVDs because once you've ruined a DVD disc (however that happens) then you can't exactly go to the shop and ask for a replacement. A funny look is all you will get.
The software does put anthing nasty on your PC or constantly hit you with ads. All it does, it make a backup of your DVD... nothing more.

  • How can you tell when your timeline has surpassed making one DVD?

Is there a way that Final Cut Express lets you know that you have passed a certain amount of space to record on one DVD?
    Thanks,

There are many variables to this problem. iDVD, for instance, lets you record 1 hour of video [total] for the best quality. It also can record up to 2 hours compressing it down as needed, so you loose quality. If you are using DVD Studio Pro, you have many different compression options, and therefore, you can have different maximum lengths of time that can be recorded onto DVD. Then, there are applications like Burn* that are simple, and don't do menus, so it offers more room for video. Then, of course, you can use a Dual-Layer DVD, which doubles the capacity of a DVD, so there's more content you can burn using iDVD** (or just better quality). I'm sure others can contribute more than I did.

  • Internal DVD drive is shot. Can I install SL from an external DVD drive?

Hi folks, a quick (well actually a few) questions.
I've had my imac since early '06. It's currently running Tiger, and I'd like to install Snow Leopard. The problem is that the internal DVD drive is shot. It's been occasionally refusing to accept DVDs for a while now, and now it has a DVD stuck in it (not mounted), which I can't get out via terminal, rebooting, or jiggling it (technical term I know).
Now, I'm going to assume that getting apple to replace the DVD drive will be more expensive than just grabbing an external drive, especially as I'll most probably only use it once. The question is, if I grab a cheap external DVD drive, will I be able to install Snow Leopard with it? Or will Tiger not recognise it as a boot drive?
    Many thanks,
    Chris
p.s. Also, I'm using a cheapo windows style keyboard (will be replacing asap), and I'm wondering if this is why I can't see bootable drives when holing option on startup?

Yes, you can install from an external drive, although I wouldn’t go for a cheap one. There are good, relatively inexpensive, drives out there. And you are going to need that option key to select the install disk as your startup. I believe there is a corresponding key on a PC keyboard, but I don’t know what it is (maybe Alt?). I’m sure someone can jump in here and tell us.

  • CD/DVD Drive issue

Wondering if any one would know the answer to this question. My combo drive on my iBook over the past 2 days has been leaving a thin gummy line on my cd's and dvd's (the line is always in the same spot, about half way on the cd/dvd). I looked at cds/dvds that I had placed in the machine before the gum started showing up to see anything was on them, and there was no evidence of anything. The gummy film is a pain in the butt to get off, but it does come off (sometimes with little scratches). The issue is not consistent and it comes and goes, when you think its gone it comes back. The problem is equal to both cd's and dvd's, not one more then the other. If anyone has a fix or a solution please let me know. Thanks.

    hi chelsea50,
if you are in doubt that itunes causes this problem the easiest thing is to deinstall it...
but you should try to delete the filter drivers of the drive - there are already some posts in this forum - use the search function
the badest thing would be that your drive is defective.. but check out all other possibilities before....

    Hi
    Four thoughts
    • Brand and type of DVD/CD Media
    • Burn Speed ?
    • Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
    • Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
Brand and type of DVD/CD Media: MATTERS
    - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands - most probably works for other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
    I only use Verbatim
    - DVD-RW - usually do not work OK but with various kinds of problems. DVD+R is a more modern sort and use to give problems on older DVD-players
    I only use DVD-R
Burn Speed (in iDVD or alike): Matters
    • Best or Max - is not best
I set it down to x2 or x4 Max
Ever used a Cleaning DVD ?
I use one WITHOUT Liquid but with brushes from time to time
Free space on Main Start-Up Hard Disk ?
    - Due to that Mac OS X - is UNIX - it behaves likewise. It needs lot's of space on Boot / Start-Up Hard Disk for it's and the applications temp files.
I never go less than 25GB free space - If HD-Video material is used then 4-5 times more is a good thing.

  • IDVD vs DVD Studio Pro

Please help! I've heard talk that it's better to burn DVDs using DVD Studio Pro than iDVD? Is that true?
I'm asking because I worked on a project that was distributed to over 200 people. Out of those 200 discs, about 30 of them were returned because they skipped, restarted or just didn't play on some DVD players.
I've gone back to the drawing board and made the following changes using iDVD before burning more copies of my project:
    1) Purchased Taiyo Yuden 8x discs
    2) Changed the burning speed to 1x
    3) Changed burning option from Pro Quality to Best Performance
I've also heard that the reason High or Pro Quality isn't a good choice for burned discs to play on standard DVD players is because the Mac burns the disc at too high of a bitrate. Is this true? Either way, should I worry about iDVD not producing a good quality disc vs using DVD Studio Pro?
    Help!!!!

    hey there Luis,
i doubt that iDVD was the problem since 85% of your DVDs worked. it could be that some of the players were to old to play they type of discs burned. some older DVD players may not like any flavor of recordable DVD, some just may not like DVD+R, preferring the older DVD-R standard. i've used iDVD since iLife 03 & had 3 that wouldn't work on customers players, but that got resolved with customers getting newer players made since 2003/2004. w/out knowing your individual customers DVD players, you may not not hit 100% compatibility.
DVD SP is a much more complicated app than iDVD, but they essentially do the same thing-allow the user to author & burn movies & photo slide shows to recordable DVD media. DVD SP allows for more interactivity & more types of content to be applied in authoring a DVD, such as a game or web site-like "Harry Potter & Sorcerer's Stone" DVD, as such it is more difficult for novices. it has a pretty steep learning curve just like Apple's other Pro Apps & is only available w/ FCS1 or FCS2, also pretty expensive.

  • Transferring VHS tape to DVD

What is required to transfer VHS tapes from a VCR to DVD? Special cable to go from VCR to my Mac?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Brian

The easiest way to do it is to bypass the computer altogether and get yourself a DVD recorder. Then you just hook up the two units and do a machine to machine dubb
If you don't want to go that route (mind you, DVD recorders are getting pretty cheap) you will have to find a way to bring your analog (VHS) sources into the digital world
One way: A DV converter like the Canopus. Will allow you to do a Capture Now from your VCR thru the Canopus into the puter. You could also use a DV cam as a pass thru device; analog from the VCR to the cam, Firewire from the cam to the puter.
Once you have the tapes in the puter you have to get them into MPEG2 (DVD) format. You can do that by Exporting as Quicktime Movie and dropping the resulting file into iDVD and making a DVD there
This is more steps and more time than using a DVD Recorder but it gives you mo options; like cleaning up the analog signal a little (the newest Canopus converters have TBCs) and using FC/iDVD to create chapters, menus, etc
