  • G3 Pismo DVD-ROM Problem

The DVD-ROM (Model M7931, Apple P/N 661-2244) in my G3 Pismo is not working properly. When a CD or DVD is input the drive spins, but makes slow & fast spin speed noises. Then it quits without reading the CD or DVD. The lens is clean & the drive appears in the System Profiler. When I replace the DVD-ROM drive with a CD-ROM drive (M73888), the CD drive reads a CD, so apparently the electronics within the G3 are OK.
I've read in forums that these drive have been problematic. Has anyone attempted a repair of the drive or know what might be the problem? The Service Manual troubleshooting doesn't suggest much, except replace. Since the drive is inop & possibly need to be trashed, I'm not adverse to trying to disassemble & attempt a repair. I can continue to use the CD-ROM drive.
I doubt that I will replace the DVD-ROM because used ones appear to cost $50+ & new ones about $100+. Is there an alternate (cheaper $) PC drive that could be used?
     Cheers, Tom

It's fixed. WD40 to the rescue.
I was considering swapping the Apple drive with a PC drive (see first link below, Plan B), but thought I would do a little troubleshooting (Plan A).
I opened the drive tray from it's enclosure. Using a #0 jeweler's Phillips screwdriver, I removed the metal cover plate screws (5). Then removed the screws (3) holding the motor/plate assembly. Carefully lifted the motor assembly upward at about a 45 degree angle (flex cables were attached). Looking at the side, there was about a 1mm gap between the motor & the plate. Using the plastic nozzle on a can of WD40, sprayed a small amount of lubricant. Let it sit for a few minutes & rotated the spindle. Reassembled everything.
I inserted a CD, didn't hear any spinning noise & the CD icon appeared on the screen. Repeated with a DVD. Both were being read. Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Embedding Real Media off a DVD-ROM -- problems in Safari

Safari won't play embedded Real Media files off of a DVD-ROM. Description:
I'm trying to embed Real Media files in web pages distributed on a DVD-ROM. It works fine in Firefox (and in Windows), but in Safari, it doesn't work. It takes a long time for the embedded video to even start playing in Safari (about 2 minutes), and then it consistently crashes Safari less than a minute after that. Sometimes it doesn't play at all, but after a few minutes shows a "resource unavailable" error in the Activity window instead. It works perfectly if the files are on the hard drive, or if I'm streaming them over the Internet through Helix Server, but they just won't work when they're embedded off of the DVD-ROM through Safari.
I've tried several Intel and PowerPC machines, all running the latest OS and RealPlayer versions, but I can't get it to work anywhere. I thought it could be disc or drive speed issues, but like I said, even Firefox on these same Macs plays the embedded video with no problems, and of course RealPlayer can open them directly off the disc just fine too. Safari seems to be standing in the way of my universal browser compatibility!
I've contacted Real about this too, but I haven't received a response. Any ideas? Thanks -- Jim

Also, for the embedded Real Media code, I'm essentially just using the code generated here:
    http://cit.ucsf.edu/embedmedia/step1.php
(I can't imagine this matters much, since it works in all other browsers and all other instances other than Safari accessing the DVD-ROM)

  • P10: DVD / DVD-ROM Problems

    Hi guys!
Hope you can help, probably something stupid I have overlooked. I Have the P10 series with a Combo DVD-ROM type SD-R2412. I've recently put a fresh install of the op system on (XP) using the system restore disks. Since, my cd drive reads normal cd's and DVD films but not DVD ROMS such a games on DVD-ROM. Any ideas? Windows XP sees it as a DVD/CD-ROM drive but that's about it.
Thanks in advance for any help

    Hi
I am not sure but I think that your unit has a DVD-RAM drive. I have the same drive in my Satellite and everything works perfect. I can really dont understand how something like that possible is especially after OS reinstallation with Recovery CD.
I dont know if you use the original games from store or some self burned. Try to use many different DVD medias to find out which one makes problem.

  • DVD-ROM problem reloaded

HI everybody. I have posted this issue before, but got no solution for it. So, I'm trying again.
Whenever I insert a CD into my DVD-ROM drive the system gets locked. The drive's light lights up a few times, but everything gets locked, including the mouse pointer. Then after a few minutes the mouse pointer is released and the system can be used again. The DVD-ROM drive, however, is never accessed at all.
When the above useless processing is finished the mouse pointer is released, and I can use the system - as long as I don't try to access the DVD-ROM drive again. If I do try to access the drive, everything gets locked up again as explained in the above paragraph.
Would you guys be able to help me figure this out?

    ttreaders:
I have had problems since I began installing nVidia IDE drivers. Whenever I install those, the problem repeats itself. With the original MS WinXP drivers I did not have it. However I get a lot more performance from the system with the newest nVidia IDE drivers. So ...
    G_man:
Thanks for your "moral" support. Your description of the problem is excellent. It seems exactly the same as mine.  This drive is a Samsung SD-616B 16x DVD-ROM that came with my Dell 8200 system. I took it out of the Dell system and installed in the new one. The FW version is F006. I bought this Dell 8200 in November 2001. I wouldn't think it's an old drive though. Regarding round cables, I do have them, so I might try using flat ones sometime in the near future, and see if it works better. Also, please see my reply to archermoo below.
    Archermoo:
I have disabled UDMA mode in Bios and driver, and ... IT WORKS!!! Alleluiah. The system can access the drive and is not hanging any more. .
Now, my question to you guys is: what am I missing by changing the DVD-ROM drive's access mode to PIO?

  • G550 DVD Rom Problem

    Need help
I installed a few programs after rebooting  the DVD rom is no longer in my computer.
I see it in Device manager with? in yellow.
I tried to unistall it and then reboot so it finds new hardware.
It found new hardware it installs it but then window pops up and tells me that it wouldn't work properly.
    Im using Window XP pro.

Try to have a look in the registry.Open the registry and navigate to this Key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
If there are Entries like "Upperfilters" oder "LowersFilters" delete them, close the registry and restart your notebook. This worked for me several times on multiple windows xp machines.

  • SCSI DVD-ROM problems

    Hi
I recently applied patch 118844-27. All went well except that now when I boot I get a load of SCSI errors (bus timeout etc etc. etc.), which prevents the system from starting (well, I've never waited long enough to see if it gets past all of the timeouts, but it seems to be timing out on all devices).
If I unplug my Toshiba SD-M1201 DVD_ROM then I can boot normally. The same PC has worked OK for a good few years, going back to Solaris 7. This looks like a regression to me.
Any ideas for a workaround, or is there going to be a patch to fix this?
    A+
    Paul

No replies, but I can add a little.
If I leave the DVD plugged in, but disable it in the SCSI BIOS, then I can use it (with the /dev entries that were created prior to 118844-27). So the problem seems to be limited to newboot and the detection of hardware, not to anything more fundamentally related to the SCSI layers.

  • Satellite A200-23U - DVD-ROM problem after firmware update

Hi! I have A200-23U (TSSPcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H). I update firmare first to TO02, then to TO03. None errors was shown. After reboot my device is locked (doesn't open/eject by button or by any software) and ImgBurn (for example) can't find any writers. In system devices now it's shown as:
IDE\CDROMTSSTCORP_CDDVDW_TS-L632H________________*BOOT*____\5&1AC5D6C0&0&0.0.0 (I think there must be *TO03* but no *BOOT*)
What's wrong and how can i fix it?
PS Sorry for my bad english .)

I won!! TSL632H_TO??.exe - it's just SFX-archive that can be unpacked by WinRAR (for example). And then we got SFDNWIN.exe program and firmware dump file (*.bin) separately, which can be used to upload firmware without any checks (compatible/non compatible).

  • DVD-ROM Unit problem

If I try to load a DVD disc it'll only make some loud breath voice which falls after 2 seconds and it periodically repeats until I take out the disc. Here's the information I found in msinfo32 (I translate it from my motherlanguage to english so it's probably not 100% correct):
    Unit F:
    Description Unit CD-ROM
    Medium Loaded No
    Medium Type DVD Writer
    Name hp DVD RW AD-7721H
    Manufacturer (Standard unit CD-ROM)
    State OK
    Transmission rate -1.00 kB/s
    Target ID device SCSI 1
    ID device PNP IDE\CDROMHP_DVD_RW_AD-7721H______________________1.80____\4&3A93AF2C&0&0.1.0
    Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys (6.1.7601.17514, 144,00 kB (147 456 bajtů), 18.8.2012 17:12)
Could you please tell me if it's a software disruption or the DVD ROM is simply damaged.

    Hi,
The first thing I'd suggest is to eject the drive tray and use a soft material like cotton to gently clean the lens.
Check if this has made any difference.
If not, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • Authoring problem with DVD-ROM content, Authoring problem with DVD-ROM content

Out of nowhere, I can't seem to add DVD-ROM content to my latest DVD. The folder is about 1100 photos and weighs in at 1.6GB. The content is accepted, the DVD burns and all seems right until you try to access the DVD folders. The video plays beautifully. The folder structure displays but I can't even get the VIDEO_TS folder to display detail consistently.  This isn't my first time to the fair, I've been authoring with DVDSP for 8-9 years.
I went back and reviewed the the procedure step-by-step, I even re-named all the photos to comply with ISO 9660 naming conventions...  no joy.  I've
burned it with and without the Joliet Extension Support, no difference.
I'm on an (early 2008) 8x3.2GHz Mac Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and FCS3.
Anyone ever seen this? I'm stumped.

Michael, thanks for the response. It turns out it's both the size and quantity of photos.
I feel stupid for not solving this earlier, but it took a trip to one of my back-up systems to see the problem:
The SuperDrive simply doesn't have the bandwidth to quickly transfer sufficient info to display these additional folders. I tried the same DVD on one of my souped up G5 dualies (with new 16X burner) and it seemed to incrementally display the folders. That's when I realized that a DVD with a couple of GB of video on it is a poor display system. LOL
I'll re-organize the data into more, smaller folders and instruct the recipients to be patient or drag the folders to their desktop.

  • Is it normal for a dvd - rom to be detected as a cd - rom ? ( Note:problem since new 2005)

intermittant ahum.... so after a time i upgraded the cd-rom-rw to a dvd-rom-rw to solve the problem. once all was well i swaped locations of the 2 dvd-rom so the writer is at the top. always things work when first discoverd. but after some time not so much. since then..... i have also upgraded OS to windows 7 from xp sp2/3  . worked just as desribed above. been through the mill with the fixit and manualy upper/lower, enable -disable ... only thing i can think of is licenseing that pops into action stopping use. and i'm not doing any illegal downloads or copy protect etc..  i just watched matrix on dvd 2 piece movie and when switching to disc 2 it would not continue. what happens ?

    Hi,
I don't think that the laptop is powerful enough to handle blu-ray disks. I have checked the specs for a dv6910us and there is a D2C AMD 2GHz cpu and nVidia 7150M which is a very poor config for playing BR disks. Blu-Ray players are supported on Intel based full featured dv6700 series laptops which might suggest that it would be the same on dv6900 series laptops.

  • Re: K7T266pro2 Board mod - Problem with DVD burner/DVD ROM

    Hi there!
I did the mod and installed a Athlon XP 2400 (T-Bred) on my board. Everything worked perfect, I had the 3.7 bios and it recognized the processor correctly, same for WIN, Sandra etc. System is stable, temperature are much lower compared to my old 1700XP.
But there exits a problem and I am not sure if it's related to the removal of the cap. First my DVD burner and my DVD-ROM stopped working and after thorough testing (different combinations master/slave/CS...) I thought they're broken and got a new DVD burner. But after installing this one - sampe problem.
This is the problem: The bios does not recognize the burner when it's in "auto" setting, it does so when doing autodetection in the bios. Then it says "DVD" for the respective IDE channel. But the drive does not react. If I press eject the lamp on the drive starts blinking but nothing happens, the tray does not open. Sometimes the drive is listing in WIN but it's not accessible.
All my HDD's work fine even on the same IDE channel.
Does anyone encounter a similiar rpoblem or have any idea how to solve this? I am sure itt must be a bios issue (to test I have flashed the 3.74 beta bios but problem remains).
    Thanks.
    Cheers
    P.

Hello! I tried to reply, but was thrown out of the forum without passing "Go". In short:
Have only one optical drive in.
Make it Master at the end of the cable.
    Disable DMA for it.
If this one works now, continue with the next.
Don't re-enable DMA till both are working.
