DVD -RW rewriteable in k3b?

Can't get DVD-RW to rewrite in k3b.
Is it supported?
EDIT:  Read a report in Reader's Digest that ten out of two people are dyslexic......

Yes and none of them are very happy thoughts. The AMD version of the dv6000 series is prone to motherboard chipset failure and one symptom is disappearing peripherals like wireless cards and optical and hard drives.

  • What DVD (read write) media is the most reliable.

On a new Mac Pro, should I use DVD+RW or DVD-RW, and what brand.

Check out http://www.macsales.com optical drives and media section.
I have not had any issue with Verbatim +RW.
If you type "DVD " into the Search field above next to "Support" will take you to Apple Store where 20 pack Verbatim $19.95.
I know there use to be a site that delved into all things related to DVD media.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/media-and-accessories/
There are 2 major DVD formats, and 6 within those. DVD+ and DVD-. The DVD+ standard has advantages when it comes to video recording on TV DVD recorders. They can start recording faster, so it's much easier to put the disc in and hit record to write your favorite show to disc immediately. For PC data, there is very little difference between DVD+ and DVD-. DVD+ will most likely win the format 'war'.
DVD- is the DVD-forum approved standard, and it uses the regular DVD logo with Recordable and Rewritable. It's basically the same technology as CD-R and CD-RW.
Those are the two main formats, but there are several discs within those:
    DVD+R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 16X speed.
DVD-R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 8X speed.
DVD+RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 4X speed.
DVD-RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
    DVD+R DL - Dual-layer write-once media from the DVD+ standdard. 8.5Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
DVD-RAM - ReWriteable media from a subset of the DVD- standard. NOT common, and very expensive, but EXCELLENT for use as a large floppy disk drive. Only a few consumer drives write to DVD-RAM discs, mainly those made by LG.
If you want to record movies, you should be aware that DVD+R media is less compatible with TV DVD-players (especially older ones). Also, some PC DVD-ROM drives won't read DVD+R discs.

  • Dual Booting With Windows 8?

So, I found this guide: http://www.neuraladvance.com/2012/11/17 … -uefi-lvm/. While I've ran and used Arch before a few times, it's been a while.
The problem is that the guide decides to use the Windows 8 partition itself to install Arch; what I would like to do is use my own partition for Arch, making it as independent as possible from Win8, and both booted with Grub. I've already wiped everything and reinstalled Windows 8 first, however I'm a bit confused as to how to properly setup a UEFI partition. Period. Are there any good guides on how to do this? The Dual Boot article on the wiki, unfortunately, wasn't very helpful in my case.
While I have the latest snapshot already on USB, it doesn't boot properly, not allowing access to /dev/tty (i.e., I can't do anything). Also, I unfortunately can't use GParted Live since none of my DVDs are rewriteable; they've already been used up over the years. So, if anyone has any suggestions on how best I can approach this (or good resources which are to the point; i.e., not too much details to wade through), it would definitely be appreciated.
    Thanks.

By "the Windows 8 partition," it appears that you're referring to the EFI System Partition (ESP) that Windows created -- /dev/sda1 in the referenced guide. I've only skimmed the article, but I didn't notice any reference to using any actual Windows partitions in it. Note that the ESP doesn't really "belong" to any one OS; it definitely is not a Windows partition. It is, as its name suggests, a partition that "belongs" to the EFI. It's meant to be shared across OSes.
That said, if you really want to, you can create multiple ESPs. This is legal according to the EFI spec. Unfortunately, it can cause problems, since the Windows 7 installer gets very confused if it sees multiple ESPs and an installation of Windows 7 will fail. I don't know if Windows 8 has the same problem, but if it does, and if you find that you need to re-install Windows, having multiple ESPs will complicate matters. Thus, I generally recommend sticking with one ESP per disk if at all possible. Be sure to keep it backed up in case some ill-behaved program trashes it, though.

  • Solaris 10 8/07 will not install

I cannot get Solaris 10 8/07 to install from a DVD .iso image. I have an x86 platform with 2.66 GHz Celeron Processor and 256MB RAM and 60 GB HD so I believe the hardware is adequate. In my first attempt at installation I had Windows XP and openSUSE 10.3 both successfully on my HD, and was operating in openSUSE 10.3. I used the "cat" shell terminal command, to glue all five pieces (two OS parts, companion iso, and md5 lists) and then burned to DVD using the openSUSE "k3b" DVD burner app. It was unsuccessful. What came up when booting from this newly created DVD .iso image was very slowly (too slowly it seems) occuring dots like about this many > ". . . . . . . . . . . . . . .", and then three boot options. I choose the default "Solaris" option. Then what came on the screen was "Copyright 1983-2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. Use is subject to license terms", and then "Configuring devices", with a cursor blinking forever and hanging, on the next line. That's as far as it goes in booting up. It hangs forever at this point. Everything was super slow in getting to the "Configuring devices" part as well.
Then, I tried just the essential files OS itself parts a & b, used "cat" to glue them together, and the exact same occurance as above happened.
Then, I decided to wipe the my entire hardrive with "DBAN" (a harddrive eraser), do a fresh install of Windows XP, and so go the WINDOWS x86 option route...had to first install ".net 3.0" and then "CD burner XP", (for CD burner XP to work you now need .net for Win XP OS)...and after all the downloading and decompression time for the WINDOWS x86 Solaris OS .exe file, that did correctly expand to a single .iso file, still, the same exact results as the very first DVD .iso burn.
Then thought, okay maybe my PC x86 hardware is not powerful enough and so ran Sun Device Detection Tool, and it detected all the drivers on my system except for 56K modem and a warning about vga text, so that's okay. I don't use 56K, and could see the text abuot "Configuring devices", so I believe this is not the problem at this stage.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Do I need some kind of Solaris 10 8/07 patch to then build a new .iso build?
I'm at a complete loss, and now quite frustrated.

I also had that exact same issue on a "HP Presario 2.2Ghz Celeron with 1Ghz ram".
It hangs on the blinking cursor. I am a techie, so I downloaded and burned more dvds in different ways. They all respond the same in that computer (so it shouldn't be a media problem), HOWEVER, on ONE machine (P3 1.0ghz 512MB 60GB) I have gotten the installation to proceed all the way to...
    [solaris install console text reads]
    Checking rules.ok file...
    Using begin script: install_begin
    Using finish script: patch_finish
    Executing SolStart preinstall phase...
    Executing begin script "install_begin"...
    Begin script install_begin execution completed.
    Starting Solaris Installation...
    [end]
It is past the partition creation point, and should be installing the software.
I installed a fresh hard drive in to do some playing, and it did not create any partition information even though it is past that point.
I think it may be a problem with the x86 installation program set. But I have no SPARC hardware in which to test.
I would love to evaluate sol10 if anybody can find a workaround.
    Please advise :-)

  • New Arch Idea, would like to hear opinions..

I was thinking.. I was kind of tired of always when reinstalling arch on my laptop or new computer that I have to configure it, choose packages etc etc..
If in installation, one could choose premade configuration of what to packages to install, what configurations that should be done, what modifications and etc. Then doing the basic config yourself and let the rest be done automatically. This was All installation of packages and settings being done automatically and when done it should have a ie a fully working gnome desktop with a specific theme and specific software installed..
This would be great.. Then arch users could upload that config file and others could use it to have same installation as that user..
The main idea is to save that time.. so that i can go away and when i am back i have a working gnome desktop with firefox and its addons, my specific theme settings and desktop keyboard shortcuts.. setting alsa, removing some unneccessary modules etc..
Just to make it clear here is an example..
    Installation Config examples:
    1. Gnome desktop with some specific theme and gdm login manager, open office + bunch of other apps... (all configs made to have this working, like setting gdm into rc.conf etc etc..)
    2. Kde Desktop with firefox... bla bla bla..
This is just an idea ontop of my head..  and i just need your opinions of what you think, if its good idea, possible or whatever.. I know it sound little difficult but I dont think its impossible and this would give arch more unique feature.

    Nice functions.
About making a pre-configured Arch system, that idea is nice but it goes apart from Arch philosofy, however it's still nice because it would still remain bleeding-edge and fast, let's just say that we would quit the KISS part of Arch and keep the other advantages (this would also help n00bs to adapt to an Arch envirnment so they could later use a normal Arch Install)...

  • Do I need dbus and avahi ?

I don't use HAL. I mount my DVD  and USB drives manually.  I just play videos and do encoding and write DVDs usign wodim or k3b. Do I need dbus and avahi daemons runnning ?
HAL was installed automatically as some dependancy for something I don't rememeber. I don't even use GNOME/KDE, I simply use wmii with rxvt-unicode and firefox.

If you use input hotplugging for xorg-server then you need hal which needs dbus.
dbus is alo needed by wpa_supplicant & firefox and many other GUI applications like the gimp etc
i cant seem to find the link dependance on firefox although i could have sworn that it depended on dbus-glib in the past.
since it isnt explicitly disabled in the config im pretty sure firefox uses it http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/f … iew=markup
but i cant be sure as i use the official binary supplied by mozilla, not the archlinux package.

then i did an upgrade to the firmware of Plextor from 1.02 to 1.03

Sorry, I've been playing with this stuff so long ( I started with RedHat 5.2), that I have forgotton how to explain the steps. But, if you untar the package (I do it in its own directory} You should be able to move the binary to a location of you choice. I think you need someone more experienced than me to describe the steps.
ok and ty very much for help so far
ps: did you find any solution with using k3b?
i like it more in a graphical enviroment.

  • Unable to read DVDs (to ISO images) in k3b

k3b is working flawlessly except when I want to read existing DVDs into ISO images.
I use the "Copy DVD" option with "Only create image" checked.
    The read never even starts.

Recently I bought a DVD burner and popped it in my 10.3.9 machine, and (after installing Patchburn) it read DVDs just fine. Whatever's going on, it's not an OS issue. If it was, can you imagine the how much noise there would be about it? Again, there have been a few posts on the forums about it, but that tells us all something -- this is an isolated issue and not a general OS issue.

  • Can't burn .ISO image with k3b/brasero on DVD-RW disc.

I don't understand what's going wrong here, so I hope someone can help me.
I have created an .ISO image (of a video) using DVDstyler.
    (1) DVDstyler will burn it to a DVD-RW without any problems.
    (2) I can burn it from the command line (growisofs etc.)
    (3) I can burn it to a DVD-R from any application (DVDstyler, K3b, Brasero)
K3B and Brasero will write data to a DVD-RW any without problems
But, when I try to burn the dvd.iso to a DVD-RW disc with either k3b or Brasero, they fail with various  error messages.
For example, K3B's debugging output is as follows

as far as i can see, problem is with

  • K3b, filesystems and a dvd player

    Hi!
Im using k3b to burn a dvd with 6 movies... just one have less than 31 characters, and the subtitles .srt for it works ok
but the other 5 have more than 31 characters, and my dvd player do not "join" the video file with the .srt file... so, I have no subtitles there...
(I do not know why... if the player trim the video name file, and the srt name file... its the same "combination" at the end...)
I tried a lot of system files combinations, and none of them works at all
well I can rename all files to 31 characters or les... but... why?
(I have burned things like this in windows, and worked ok)
    Any idea?

I tried that... the joliet setting?
And I tried the allow 31 and 37 characters iso9660 (marked and unmarked)
    I tried creating .tbl table
    I tried generating udf structure...
    and always the same problem
