DVD to Premiere for editing?

A few years ago I transferred our home movies from tape to DVD. I now want to edit those dvd's. In researching this, I found a suggestion recommending that the VOB files on the disc be renamed to MPG. This worked and I was able to import the video to my project. Missing was the audio. I read another suggestion of using a 3rd party app to convert the VOB files to AVI. There seem to be several products that do this but I am not familiar with them. Does anyone recommend a product? Is a 3rd party product necessary? Is there a better way to import the video/audio from the DVD's?
Any assistance/feedback is greatly appreciated.
Tom

> The earlier suggestion was incorrect.
> No it's not. I do it all the time.
And I've been known to "shoot" a spontaneous moment with my cell phone; doesn't make it good quality! (Sorry; couldn't resist.)
I don't use this method, so I don't recall, but I think it was Dan Isaacs who pointed out the downsides to this.
My approach is somewhat different from any of the conversion methods. The best output is going to be leaving the mpeg from the DVD alone. Don't convert it to anything else (which may involve a quality hit), and which also requires reconverting to mpeg to go back to DVD. This only works if you use cuts only editing, using a frame accurate mpeg editor (e.g. Womble, or I use videoredo).
Of course, you can't really "edit" using that method, and there are times where you need to convert - such as when mixing the footage with non-mpeg. I don't do it a lot; I've used an older version of AVS Video Converter successfully. Jim's suggestion to visit VideoHelp is a good one.
Another option is based on it being Premiere's problem with editing AC3 that is often the culprit, and some users advocate copying a decoder over. I don't know how/whether this applies to CS4.
The bottom line for best quality: never archive as DVD mpeg; if possible, go back and recapture the relevant parts of your movies in your current full quality preference.

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

  • Use of 8cm dvd from handycam for editing

Hi just got my first mac yesterday very pleased, I have a sony DCR-DVD105E handycam, this records straight to 8cm Dvd. Does my mac take this size dvd before I just pop it in and can't get it back out? if not can anyone help me as how to edit using my mac? thanks for any help.

Slot feed DVD/CD players do not do well with those little disks.
Either find a player that uses slide out trays or connect the camera to the computer using the appropriate cable - usually USB and see if you can get the material off of the DVD.
Most likely you will have to close the DVD session (meaning you can not record anymore material on it) before the disk will show up on the desktop as another drive.
Once you have the files transfered over using drag and drop, they will have to be converted to an editable format. DV is best.
    Good luck,

  • Import DVD to iMac for editing

I have a DVD copy of a video recording (not in my possession). From my DVD drive I want to save the content of this DVD copy to my computer. I then want to be able to edit the saved DVD content and burn another DVD of my edited version. This seems like a simple process for iMac, but I have no idea what to do.
Can someone walk me through it?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    You'll need either:
    MacTheRipper and

  • How do I get a dvd into iMovie for editing?

I want to edit my teaching videos. They are on DVDs. How do I get them into iMovie as all the tutorials I have seen only speak of loading from a camera?

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video6.html
This should help. Rather than using DV which iMovie doesn't handle well for no earthly reason, you should substitute the Apple Intermediate Codec, which may give you better results.
DVDs are very heavily compressed standard definition media, so converting it will not make it any better.

  • Home movies on DVD into iMovie for editing?

I've had home movie video cassettes transferred onto DVD professionally and want to move them into iMovie so I can do edits and create new movies. The DVDs play fine but I can't figure out how to get them into iMovie so I can manipulate

As Peter Joshua stated, Instant Handbrake will do the job and it is free, but you will have to check the settings to conserve the original quality because HandBrake is made to convert for iPod and will condense the movie. I have an app called Cinematize Pro, which is a perfect app for doing this. It is not free but conserves the full quality of the video and allows you to convert selected chapters or clips and not the whole DVD content.

  • How do I import a personal DVD into iDVD for editing and copying

I am running 10.9.5. I see that I have 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory
Do I have enough power on this machine to even do what I want to do?
I have several DVD's of home movies that have been digitized.
The files on the DVD list Video_rm and Video_ts. I see a place to import this DVD, but I am not able to select both folders to import at the same time.
What do I need to do in order to edit these home movies on my computer?
    thanks,

Here is how I do it, with no quality loss that I can see. (And I'm picky.)
Use Cinematize 2, I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
    http://www.amazon.com/Miraizon-10121201-Cinematize-2-Mac/dp/B0006AAO96/ref=cm_cr _pr_pb_t
    I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09 - 11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

Cinematize 2 + iMovie 06 + iDVD 09/11 works great for me.
Use Professional Quality in iDVD, good for 2 Hrs on a single layer DVD, 3 Hrs 45 Mins on a Dual layer DVD. I use DVD+Rs only.

  • Laptop for editing with Adobe Premiere & After Effects CS6

Hi, I'm just started a company working with young people, and I need a laptop for editing some videos (short films/music videos).
I was looking at a cheap laptop to be able to run Adobe Premiere and After Effects smoothly. I was told that this laptop would run smoothly:
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-envy-m6-1178sa-15-6-laptop-17419990-pdt.html
Can anyone confirm this? The graphics card is not listed on the Adobe's website but I was told it's compatible?
Im new to this stuff so please help, thank you.

How realistic are the system requirements Adobe posts on their site?
    System requirements
    Windows
Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor with 64-bit support; Intel Core®2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II processor required for Adobe® Premiere® Pro, After Effects®, and Encore®; Intel Core i7 processor required for Adobe SpeedGrade™
Microsoft® Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and Windows® 8. Refer to the CS6 FAQ for more information about Windows 8 support.*
2GB of RAM (4GB recommended) for 32 bit; 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended) for 64 bit
14.5GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for disk cache, preview files, and other working files (10GB recommended)
1280x900 display with 16-bit color and 512MB of VRAM; 1680x1050 display required, and second professionally calibrated viewing display recommended for SpeedGrade
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Sound card compatible with ASIO protocol or Microsoft WDM/MME
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (DVD+-R burner for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
    Java™ Runtime Environment 1.6 (included)
Eclipse™ 3.7 (for plug-in installation of Adobe Flash® Builder®); the following distributions are supported: Eclipse IDE for Java EE and Java Developers, Eclipse Classic, Eclipse for PHP Developers
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features, multimedia, and HTML5 media playback
Dedicated GPU card required for SpeedGrade (for optimal performance in SpeedGrade and for GPU-accelerated features in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects: NVIDIA Quadro 4000, 5000, or 6000 or other Adobe-certified GPU card with at least 1GB of VRAM recommended); visit www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html for supported cards
Optional: Tangent CP200 family or Tangent Wave control surface for SpeedGrade
Optional: For SDI output, NVIDIA Quadro SDI Output card required for SpeedGrade
Optional: 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended) for video products
This software will not operate without activation. Broadband Internet connection and registration are required for software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.† Phone activation is not available.
You have to be from another world to believe these requirements. Note the last optional statement. Up to and including CS4 this stated:
Dedicated 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured) for video products.
Nobody in his right mind believes that system requirements get lower over time. It is purely a marketing lie to artificially lure prospective buyers.
The requirement to have two physical disks for CS6 is bogus.
If anything is bogus, it is the system requirements from Adobe and only fools would try to use a system with these minimum requirements, like this:
Pentium 4 with 4 GB of RAM, 24.5 GB of hard disk space is enough according to them.
Harm is confusing editing with getting high PPBM scores, I am afraid - again.  Not all projects have 10 layers of H.264 stacked with heavy effects for two hours straight.  The vast majority of editing is simple transitions and effects with 10 minutes of YouTube encoding twice a week.
Wrong assumption. I was thinking of a simple DV timeline with one single track. And however much you dislike the PPBM benchmark, it is the only available tool to show how well a system is setup and in balance. Question: Is your dislike of the benchmark based on the fact that your favorite HP Z820 does not do well?

  • Converting Video Files For Windows Premiere Elements Editing

A client has given me a couple of dozen videotapes, about half MiniDV and the other half VHS-C. He's also given me a 1TB external hard drive.
He would like the drive returned with a single unedited video file for each tape loaded onto it. He will then edit these tapes in Adobe Premiere Elements on a Windows PC, and ultimately burn DVDs.
I have the necessary equipment to capture the contents of all of these tapes into FCP, but I have two questions.
First, what should I convert these files to? I'm thinking QuickTime movies, or DV, since Premiere Elements can work with either of those, and storage space shouldn't be a problem; all the footage is SD, of course.
Second, I haven't connected the drive he's given me yet; if I need to format this drive for my MacPro to use, will my customer then have problems accessing the video files? Or, is there a proper way for me to format this drive so that the files will be readable when he gets it back?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

It's never a good idea to capture on a different NLE than the one which will be used for editing. It can cause all sorts of compatibility problems. There are even issues going between FCP and iMovie -both Mac applications.
I'm thinking QuickTime movies, or DV, since Premiere Elements can work with either of those,
Are you *absolutely sure* about that, given that a PC based NLE typically works with avi files?
As to your disc formatting questions, you can download the [NTFS-3G driver|http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com> which will let you read, write and even reformat the drive as NTFS on the Mac. All reasonably modern PCs work with this disc format and you won't run into the file size limitations associated with FAT formatted drives.

  • DVD into Premiere CS4 for Dummies

Will someone please write an article or short, simple book with this title? Surely it would sell! And then let me know when it's finished and I will be the first one to buy it. It needs to written to non-techies like me who understand video editing, but not the input and output information...compression and stuff, and all the practical application in ways we dummies can understand. Could it be written as a simple textbook, with an elementary/middle school audience in mind so we can understand it? We just want to make music videos. Please, make it simple for us: do this (and make it clear) and then tell us that if that doesn't work, then this is what you do and why. And cover all the bases - don't leave us hanging and wondering. Wow - I've already looked for a book like this on Amazon. It is a real need. Even Adobe Premiere CS4 Classroom in a Book doesn't give you an inkling of how to get DVDs into Premiere. Do they just asuume that because it's easy for them that it's easy for us? We are hairstylists, English teachers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, fulltime moms...computers are not our major. Once I finally figure all of it out, and it's clear in my mind, I will write the book if no one else has. : )

  • How to transfer the content of the video to Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 for editing ?

    Hi there,
I have an old video camera that is still working. That video camera uses a Hi 8 tape. The tape is bigger that the current DV tape. The size of the tape is something like a tape cassette.
How to transfer the content of the video to Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 for editing ? Being an old video camera, the output doesn't have any firewire or USB connector. In fact the only output is has is the Yellow, Red & while connector (is this referred to as composite).
So, how do I input this Yellow, Red & White cable into the PC (or rather into Adobe Pro CS3) ?
Any established hardware/convertor to recommend ?
    Thanks

    Ryan,
For "composite out," only you will need an A-D "bridge" to Capture from that camera. Grass Valley/Canopus offers two really good ones, the ADVC-110 and the ADVC-300. There are others and also PCI A-D capture cards, but the Canopus units get very good reviews.
One other workflow would be to hook your older camera to a digital video camera with passthrough (not all have this and it is being discontinued fairly rapidly in consumer cameras) and then doing the Capture through that digital video camera via FireWire. You will not have Device Control, but can easily start/stop via the mouse and one hand on the switches, or on a remote.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Converting H.264 for Editing in Premiere Elements 9

    Hi!
What is the best way to convert my MOV H.264 files off my Canon T2i for editing in premiere. I've heard several people say that H.264 is NOT an editing codec, and it seems to be true. I am editing a shoot with the files directly off the camera and IT IS SLOW!  When you go to export in Premiere it says that AVI files are what you should use for editing in Premiere, but my problem is that I don't know which is the best codec and quality to use. I want Full HD but I'm not sure how to transcode without losing quality. Any suggestions? Please help! Thanks.

Unfortunately, video from the Rebel series isn't supported natively in Premiere Elements 9. (Though it's worth a try. Have you tried one of the DSLR presets that matches your video's resolution?)
The BEST solution is to convert the video to a 1440x1080 MPEG/M2T using Quicktime Pro ($29 from Apple). 1440x1080, as you probably know, is the anamorphic version of 1920x1080, so it is the same resolution.
A 1440x1080 MPEG/M2T video should work perfectly with Premiere Elements' HDV project preset.
Remember: The test to see if you're using the ideal preset is that, when you add the video to your timeline, it will appear without a red line above it.
If you are seeing no red lines above your video but your video editing is still slow, it is most likely an indicator that your computer is not powerful enough to edit hi-def video or that it is not properly tuned.
If you're interested, there are much more detailed explanations for all of this in my books, available on Amazon and at Muvipix.com.
