Dvi adaptor difference?

I am curious about some of the adaptors I have and one I've ordered for my MacBook Pro 2010.  Some full size dvi ports seem to have four pins surrounding the bar and some do not:
The one that came with my Mac looks like the first wtihout the 4 pins, and the DVI to VGA adaptor I have does not fit because it has 4 pins around the bar like the second image.
I'm confused as to what is supposed to be the standard and work with which??

here's the difference - see image attached...
vga is the blue one...
VGA - Analog
DVI - Digital ( better image quality)

  • Mini dvi to hdmi adaptor vs. mini dvi to dvi adaptor

Do the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor works? I notice a lot of them for sell on ebay, but none at apple store. Does apple not recommend this setup? Most of the forums address the mini dvi to dvi adaptor to dvi to hdmi cable set up. I can not find anything that clearly says you can use the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor and just connect a regular hdmi cable to get video from a macbook to tv.
BTW My LG tv model 42PC3D (link to manuel below) says that the HDMI cable supports computer connection.
    http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

There are reports here that non Apple mini DVI-->whatever cables don't work correctly connect to a MB. That said, if the cable is cheap enough, give it a shot. I just looked at the mini DVI-->HDMI cables on eBay and they all look "short" and for most installation, will require a longer HDMI-->HDMI cable.
So, unless the price of a DVI-->HDMI cable is a lot more than an HDMI-->HDMI cable, why not go with the standard Apple mini DVI-->HDMI cable? However, if you already have the latter, I can understand why you might not want to buy the former cable.

  • Trouble connecting Macbook pro to Samsung monitor via DVI adaptor.

I just bought an Apple mini display port to dvi adaptor but no graphics are being displayed on my monitor (a samsung tv/monitor). All that is present is the background on my macbook. Any ideas on how to sort this please?

That's the extended desktop. Try Command F1 if you want to mirror.

  • 17" MacBook Pro to 30" HD Display issue using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.

Just replaced the Western Digital hard drive on my MacBook Pro with a SSD now running Lion 10.8.2, (updating from Snow Leopard latest version).
I have a 30" HD Apple display monitor and very much love using it.
    The issue.
The MacBook Pro will only allow the 30" Monitor to display its top resolution when the unit is closed, when it is open it shows either 2 screens or mirrored screens depending upon the settings, but not at the top resolution capable by the monitor.
Now, when I was using Snow Leopard on the previos hard drive, I could close the MacBook Pro and put the computer to sleep also putting the 30" Monitor to sleep, I could then wake the computer while it was closed with my external keyboard and the screen would wake showing the FULL resolution possible on the 30" Monitor.
Then I could open the lid of the MacBook Pro and the screen would stay black allowing ONLY the 30" HD Monitor to be used effectively as a desktop computer, without the complication or need to display 2 screens or mirrored screens but most importantly the fans wouldn't need to work overtime due to the MacBook Pro being closed cutting off vital ventilation through the 2 air ducts to the left and right of the keyboard.
For some reason I cannot do this with Mountain Lion, the compluter needs to be closed in order for the 30" Monitor to display top resolution, and the fans are working overtime and the unit is getting really hot.
My concern is that the MacBook Pro will overheat, the screen will be damaged as the MacBook does get exceptionally hot when running design and audio packages, even Adobe Flash sets the fans off, and lastly the computers speakers are muffled which is more of a moo point.
If anyone could shed some light or offer a solution I would be most appreciative.
    My specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Mid 2009 3.06 Intel Core Duo, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB, OS X 10.8.2 - connecting to an Apple 30" HD monitor with a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.
    Thanks

Thanks for your quick reply! I want to think I'm not technically challenged, but... are you saying to go from minidisplay on macbook directly to the firewire in the back of the monitor? Or should I try to attach it to that ugly bunch of cables at the end of the monitor cable (dvi, usb, firewire and the power adapter thingy)? Either way, it seems like I might need yet another cable? Like Mini-display to... ?
I feel like my mother asking these questions... At any rate, when I called the guy at apple support last time he acted like it was a Miracle that I had anything on my cinema display at all if I had a minidisplay cable plugged into the thunderbolt port. He said that didn't work (but obviously it did, at least a little) I DID get a picture, it just wouldn't display at the 2560x1600 resolution. More like 1680xsomething. fuzzy and big. I want my pretty picture back.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • "miniDVI-DVI adaptor" + "DVI to VGA cable" can't detect LCD TV

    Hi,
I just bought a "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter, and then a DVI-to-VGA male-to-male cable to connect my MacBook to Viewsonic 19" monitor but my MacBook didn't detect the 19" monitor. (This 19" monitor has only VGA but no DVI input!)I tried it on my friend's 32" LCD TV but it couldn't work too.
Then I tried to connect my MacBook by using "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor + "DVI-DVI male to male" cable to DVI socket of my frind's 32" LCD TV. It worked! So I think it's not the problem of the "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor.
I worried that it's the problem of the "DVI-to-VGA" cable so I went to the shop to exchange another new "DVI-to-VGA" cable. But my MacBook still couldn't detect all these 2 monitors via VGA socket.
Can anybody help me? Please advise! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
The shopman told me that "miniDVI-VGA" adaptor was out of stock, only "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor was available yesterday. At that time I thought I had to buy a connecting cable also (no matter it's VGA-VGA or DVI-VGA cable).
Since my friend has a DVI-DVI cable, if I buy this "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter I may share my MacBook with his 32" TV too. So I bought these adaptor & cable.

  • Mini DVI - DVI adaptor

This may be a stupid question but...
I have to do a presentation and need to connect my MacBook to an external monitor for the first time. I was told that they have a fifteen pin video cable to plug into my computer. Is a Mini DVI - DVI adaptor what I need?? Also, do they have these at Best Buy?

    Hi,
Yes, you need an adapter. I was surprised that the Macbook comes with that strange little non-standard video connecor. I'll give Apple a criticism on this point, requiring me to both spend additional money for a converter dongle and have yet another thing in my presentation kit to get lost or accidentally left behind when I use my Macbook in a lecture hall.
I'd say, fine, go ahead and put the oddball connector on there, but also be presenter-friendly and give us a standard VGA connector. Every media-enabled lecture hall I've encountered at a university or hotel has a VGA cable hanging off the podium.
Be sure you get the correct adapter. There are three types: DVI, VGA, and S-video. They're all about $20 each from US suppliers. I'd recommend going to a computer store to be sure you get the one you want. Web sites often don't have adequate descriptions ofthe adapters to be sure you order the one you need. That's over-priced for what you get, but you have no choice.
This reminds me of the old powerbooks that had that weird mini-DIX connector instead of an RJ-45 Ethernet jack the rest of the civilized world was using.

  • HDMI/DVI adaptor to VGA on Monitor - No Picture

Same with Thunderbolt/DVI adaptor to VGA on monitor. Is it the adaptor to DVI/VGA cord that is making the problem?
System Information sees the Monitor(Sony Bravia TV)
Display Preferences sees my dual display set up
The computer acts as if I have two screens running
But no picture on the monitor with the signal path described above

Welcome to the wonderful world of copy protection.
Your display may not be on the "approved" list, or was removed from it.
Apple's newer Mac lines include a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
The problem can often be solved by using an HDMI to Component Video adapter.  Many believe that Component Video will give you a better picture than HDMI without any of the hassles of HDCP.

  • Should the MacBook Mini Dvi adaptor click into place?

I had a 2007 white Macbook, which the Mini Dvi adaptor clicked firmly into the port on the MacBook. I then replaced it with a 2008 white Macbook, and the same adaptor doesn't click into place, it's just held in by friction and looks like it wants to fall out all the time.
A similar problem has been posted recently for a Mac Mini:- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10393614
Does anyone know whether Apple changed the design of the port at some point so it no longer clicked into place, or whether it is a fault which could be repaired under Applecare?

I have an early 2009 White Macbook and my adapter definitely clicks into place. Maybe you have a faulty female socket on theMacbook, cannot seeing them change to be honest, I think there is only 2 types of adapters.

  • Screen turns black after connecting TV via DVI adaptor  and HDMI cable

I've just got the brand new MacBook Pro from the Apple Store. It is sensational.
    But one thing doesn't work!
I used my old "*DVI - HDMI cable*" and the new "*Mini DisplayPort - DVI adaptor*" to connect my new MacBook with my SHARP Aquos LCD TV. But the screen of the MacBook just turned black and nothing else happened, even if I removed the plugs. The only thing I was able to do was a reboot.
The HDMI cable worked very well until today with my old PowerBook G4 (I just didn't need the adaptor).
Do I need another adaptor? What is wrong? Any ideas?
    Thank you!

Did you ever resolve this problem? I want to hook up my MBP to my Aquos TV and wondered what cable to get.

  • No longer able to use single link mini DVI adaptor

I have a 27" iMac, model 11,1, and my second monitor is a 27" ViewSonic that was hooked up via the short-cable mini-DVI adaptor.  Not long ago I started having odd slow-down issues, almost system hangs, and as it turned out the cure was to unplug the monitor.  Odd, I know.
Anyway, I thought the adaptor might have gone wonky and the only spare we had lying about was a dual-link one, with the long cable and the USB plug added.  That worked fine, so I figured all was solved.
Well, we wanted to use the USB-enabled cable elsewhere, so I swapped the adaptor out for a brand-new single-link one.  No signal at all.  The Dispay Settings panel on the iMac detects the ViewSonic monitor perfectly, but that monitor won't display anything at all (except the "No Signal" message).  Then we tried the short cable on a different iMac, same model, and it works fine there. For now I seem to be stuck with the dual link cable.
For some reason my particular iMac does not like the single link DVI adaptor, and I'm baffled at why since there seem to be no other symptoms of problems.
Has anyone else ever encountered something like this, and have you any idea what the deal is?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Second minitor via USB to DVI adaptor

I would like to use a second monitor in FCPX which is a non-thunderbolt monitor.
My only thunderbolt port on my MacbookPro is being used for a Matro MXO2 (end of chain device) so if I want to add another monitor which is non-thunderbolt, could I use a usb to DVI graphics adaptor? Has anyone used one of these in FCPX?
Would the USB to DVI adaptor need to support Open GL?
    Thanks

For example, I am thinking of using something like this for the second monitor:

This is not Open GL compatible. Does that matter to view the events or viewer on the second monitor?

  • EXTREME noise when using DVI adaptor

This is driving me up the freaking wall.
I bought a flat screen monitor to connect to my Macbook Pro.
When I connect the monitor using the Apple DVI adaptor, there is INCREDIBLE, LOUD noise and static out of my speakers. The speakers are connected to my firewire audio interface, a Motu Ultralite. I swapped out the Ultralite for a Presonus interface...noise still there.
The noise goes away, immediately, when I unplug the DVI adaptor from the Macbook Pro.
adaptor out = no noise (but no external monitor)
adaptor in = loud, noise and static

  • DVI Adaptor Failures

I have been having numerous failures of DVI display adaptors with my MacBook Pro: OS 10.7.4, Late 2011 Model, Intel HD 3000 384 MB Graphics Card.
The Mini-DVI Adaptor will work for about a week, then fail. This is the third unit that I have had to swap out. In all cases, after working properly for about a week they have failed. I have attempted to remove the adaptor from both the mac and the cable, turned off the ViewSonic LED Display etc and various combinations of this. The end result is that the Mac ultimately fails to recognized the adaptor, there is no screen flash when connecting the adaptor and no signal going to my external display.
Is this a problem with my Mac? Could the Mac be causing a failure of the display port?
Any help is appreciated as this is very frustrating (fortunately Best Buy is 300 yards from my office and they have been very supportive).

Sorry, I wrote that post yesterday, but there was no time posting it. In the mean time, a new topic has been started: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2305472#2305472

  • ADC to DVI adaptor

I just bought a new Macmini, abd want to use it with my OLD monitor (the first flat panel Apple offered).  I'm told by a genius at our local Apple store that I need an ADC to DVI adaptor.  Someone on this discussion site said I need to use an adaptor with a brick.  Is this so, and where do I find one?  I googled the adaptor, and it only showed me adaptors with no brick.  Any help with this would ne appreciated.

    Dear MaryAnn,
I think it makes more sense at this point to bid a fond farewell to the old monitor if it is ADC.
The problem is that Apple's ADC monitors ran power, video and USB through one cable. It's the "power" side of the equation that requires the brick; the monitor can't get power from the wall like a regular one does. The Apple genius was wrong. Those people seem good with current gear, but are commonly weak on older equipment made before they had to use underarm deodorant daily.
Original Apple adaptors are sky-high in price:
    M8661LL
I recall there being third-party adapter like Dr Bott but they are also discontinued and scarce. I looked for one about two years ago and they were already around US$100.
For $100 you can get a nice flat-panel monitor and, for $150 you can get a really nice FP monitor.
I am an advocate for keeping old technology in service and out of the landfill, but ADC has to be scored as an Apple failure in the long run.
EDIT: Forgot your monitor was probably newer than the pre-1998 equipment this forum served. You may want to look through this part of the forums where older displays are discussed:
    Older Displays & Monitors
to see it there are any better workabouts.
