DVI-I or DVI-D?

Greetings all. I have read posts in this forum suggesting that the DVI to ADC adapter has a DVI-D plug on it, meaning that I could plug my Mini-DVI to DVI adapter straight into it. However, on the Apple Store, the product is thus described:
"DVI-I to ADC Display Adapter"
Does this mean I need a DVI-D to DVI-I adapter between these other two adapters?

I think I is for "integrated" and D is for "digital". The full DVI spec allows both digital (2 channels, actually) and analog (RGB) signals to go through the connectors. Some sockets (DVI-D, perhaps?) are missing some holes for the analog signal, so you cannot plug in a plug that has these pins on it.

  • KVM switch one Cinema hd display (dvi) with macpro (dvi) and macbook pro (mini displayport)

I want to use a KVM switch to share one display with two computers.
Computer one is: MacPro 1,1 dual core 2.66 Ghz with two DVI ports.
Computer two is: MacBook Pro 4 core 2.66 GHz with one Mini Displayport.
Display is: Cinema HD Display with DVI connector.
To do that KVM switches only use (at least that is waht I found) one system either DVI or Mini Displayports
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=3113
    DVI --> KVM SWITCH<-- DVI
                         V
                   DVI (monitor)
    http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-2x1-Mini-DisplayPort-KVM-Switch.html
Mini Displayport (Macpro) --> KVM SWITCH <-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                                             V
                                                     DVI (monitor)
    However what I want is:
DVI (Macpro) --> KVM SWITHCH<-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                           V
                                  DVI(monitor)
I couldn't find an existing KVM switcher that does this.
Then there is the following solution
DVI (Macpro) --> KVM SWITCH <-- ADAPTER (Mini Displayport to DVI) <-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                        V
                                DVI(monitor)
The question is: Will this work?
I've been told that adapter behind adapter never works. Hope someone can help with this before spending money on nothing.
    Thanx David

Maybe you're right just try and see if I can return the stuff if it's not working.
I won't be using a higher resolution then 1920 x 1200 however I still would buy the adapter
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

for connecting macbookpro to KVM DVI switch.
However if there's still someone with experiencing the exact same thing I would be much obliged.

  • What connector is on the Apple 20" Cinema Display, DVI-I or DVI-D?

Sorry if this is a noob question, i just have never bothered to clarify this fact before. I have an Apple 20in Cinema display. Is the DVI connector on it a DVI-I or DVI-D type. I'm not sure what the difference is but there is obviously one so i figured i'd ask.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi 30inch-
    Welcome to Discussions!
To extend the cable on the ACD, a cable such as that which Gefen offers will serve the purpose. At issue with the 30", is the dual link requirement. As well, with all ACD's, the USB connection is important. The firewire is for convenience, more than anything, but is included in the cable set from Gefen.
The booster that is included, is important to keep signal strength, and maintain picture clarity over the distance of the cable.
With distances of less than 10', one might get by with a quality dual link DVI-D (or DVI-I) connected cable, though the issue of signal strength may be a performance limiting factor. The picture quality and monitor performance from a passive (non-boosted) cable, will be determined by the strength, or weakness of the graphics card.

  • ACDs are they DVI-I or DVI-D?

    I have a VGA port.
I am looking for a VGA to DVI converter cable.
The cable I am looking at is for DVI-I.
Are Apple Cinema Displays using DVI-I or DVI-D?

Found my answer here. Samsung finally verified what I had feared all along. Need a 1080p display to have the sharpness of my display good enough for text. The Samsung only has a 480p. Now the scan converter will get rid of the overscanning issues, but if I want it to be a replacement for my Powerbook's display, and to use it remotely with a wireless keyboard and mouse, I'll need a 1080p display. Similarly, if I ever dreamed of making a Mac Mini into a home theatre, the 1080p is what really is needed in addition to a scan converter.

  • 7300 - DVI-I or DVI-D?

    Hi
Im a little confused, does the 7300 output DVI-I or DVI-D?
    Cheers
    Nick

The Mac Pro does have a DVI-I port!
DVI-I does contain both DVI-A (analog) and DVI-D (digital) signals.
So you can connect a DVI-D and a DVI-A screen!
Ofcourse you can also connect a VGA screen with the DVI-VGA adapter.
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Is the new 23" Display dvi i, dvi a, or dvi d ?

Is the new 23" Display dvi i, dvi a, or dvi d ?

    Forestman sez:
Is it my perception or is the new iMac really glossy and has a lot of glare
    I sez:
Well, since you ask, I'd have to say that you may have a perceptual problem. My new Intel iMac is not "really" glossy and it does not have a "lot" of glare.
The ONLY time I've seen any noticeably offensive glare off the screen occurred when I was using a flash camera to take a series of photos of the iMac over the right shoulder of a girl who was playing The Sims 2 on a 24-inch 2.8 GHz iMac, in order to get pictures for an article I was writing about The Sims. The reflected flash from behind and to her right at an oblique angle lit up her face from the side and front and it showed in several pictures as a reflection of her face in the glass in front of the game image.
I'm using the computer every day and as far as I can tell the whole hoopla about the glare off the screen is a bunch of mindless niggling. A tempest in a teacup. The computer industry being what it is I'm sure that some entrepreneur in California has already designed a translucent matte screen for the iMac and is in negotiations to have it made in China for 17 or 19 cents each, to be sold here for $29.95.
    I wish it were me.
Speaking of which, I saw something on American TV a few months ago that was highly amusing. People on the street were quoted the phrase "a tempest in a teacup" and asked to explain their understanding of what a "tempest" was. Some people thought it was a small animal of some sort and most others simply did not know what the word meant at all. Not a clue.

  • Mac Pro has a DVI or a DVI-D connector? What is the difference?

First of all i am really happy with my Mac Pro, thanks Apple!
Until now i had a old 15 lcd screen, because i could not afford a new one after buying my new Mac Pro.
Now i have enough money to buy 2 17 or 19 inch screens! But i have some trouble with selecting the right one.
I the past i had bought a AGP graphic card (for my G4) with a DVI-D connector. After that i found that it was not possible to connect my "normal DVI" screen too it. So i have to get another graphic card.
So, what connector does my mac pro have? (NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT)
The specs off the Mac Pro says it has only a DVI connector, not DVI-D, or is it just the same?
I was thinking of one off these models:
    - Iiyama ProLite E1700S-B2
    --> has a DVI-D connector
    - LG Flatron L1752HM-SF
    --> has a DVI-D connector
    - Iiyama ProLite E481S-W3
    --> has a DVI-D connector
Can i connect all these screens to my Mac Pro using DVI-D?
Are there any screens you would specially advice me? I like Samsung, Iiyama or LG. There is no need for really good screens, i am not a video editor or a graphic designer. The screens has te be "relax" for my eyes!
I know it is possible to connect all the screens by converting DVI to VGA, but if it is possible i would prefer to connect it direct by DVI.
Sorry for my quite bad english, and thanks in advance for all your help!

    I just puchased a LG226WT and it too has a DVI-D
input. So what I understand I can go from the Mac Pro
2.66 to this monitor using simply a DVI-D cable,
right, therefore not having use of Analog. Newbie
question... What is the Analog part of it all?
The analog pins alow the use of a CRT, or other VGA display via a DVI to VGA adapter. ATI boards also use the analog pins for DVI to video adapters.

  • DVI to Mini DVI (Old vs New)

I have an older MacBook Pro (aluminum keyboard: ~2009) that has the larger DVI adapter on the end.  I recently received a larger Apple monitor that has the combination USB, power hookup and mini DVI.  Is there an adapter that goes from the older DVI to the newer (smaller) one?

At ~$180...well, all I can say is "Ouch-chi-momma!" Thanks, Niel, I've seen this adapter and was hoping for a much less expensive solution.
My backup plan is to get a NEC LCD2480WUXi or PA241W for about the same (street) price as the Apple 24" Cinema Display.
Too bad Apple didn't include the DVI port. With their reputation for quality, top notch monitors, they could sell a bunch to professionals.

  • Mac mini display is flicking via HDMI to DVI adapter and DVI cable

i have received mac mini server (mid 2011) recently. mac mini is connecting the display via HDMI port using DVI cable with a HDMI to DVI adapter.
the display shows constant flicking. white dots/lines show randomly. it is like those signal noise when watching analog TV.
the same display works fine and well with macbook pro (early 2008) via DVI port.
    please help. please advise.

So you know the display is working.
It seems to me you have a few possible problems.
    1 HDMI-DVI cable is bad
    2 DVI-cable is bad
3 Connections between cables or computer or monitor are bad.
4 HDMI port on the computer is bad.
I assume you've tried #3, and re-connected cables and wiggled inputs.  So then try replacing 1 and then replacing 2 which are cheaper fixes than replacing/fixing 4.........
FYI, I'm connect my mac mini using the same setup you describe, with no issues....also inspect the cable ends carefully to look for any problems.

  • Monitor does not come out of sleep Mac-Mini Mini-DVI to Dual  DVI-D cable

I have an August 2009 Mac-Mini that I'm using with an Apple supplied Mini-DVI to DVI adapter along with a DVI-D Dual Link Cable connect to a Sceptre X7XV-Naga+ LCD monitor.
The monitor is going into sleep mode on its own with no way to disable this feature on the monitor itself. I've disabled sleep mode on the Mac-Mini in the power setting in System Preferences.
When in sleep mode and I move the mouse or press a key, the monitor will not come out of sleep mode. From other posts, I read that the issue might be that I wasn't using a Dual-Link DVI-D cable, so I bought one and installed such a cable. That has not resolved the problem. The monitor will not come out of sleep mode. When I have the monitor connected with a mini-display port to VGA adapter instead of a DVI-D cable, it will come out of sleep mode every time.

I know it's a year later, but I'm not finding much through search.
I have the same exact problem.  Difference being I'm using an iMac with 10.7.5.
Same video board and monitor - ATI Radeon HD 6750M video card connected via DisplayPort to Samsing S24A850DW.
I've tried two different mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables and no change.
I think I read that 10.8.3 might fix the issue.  Anyone that can confirm that, or has another solution?

  • TV & monitor connected via DVI to VGA & DVI cable. Wont display

I have my TV & monitor connected to my mini via DVI(input) to> VGA(output) & DVI(output) splitter cable. I cant get both tv and monitor to work at the same time only one or the other. How can I get this to work?
Note: I dont want a continuous display, I just want one to show the same as the other. If there both plugged in why dont they both work?

The answer to your question would require having a block diagram of the mini's graphics sub-system. If the DAC (digital-to-analog converter) behind the VGA port is just driven from the same output as the TMDS transmitter behind the DVI port, then I agree it would be possible that both could output the same screen simultaneously. But if the VGA and DVI ports are treated as seperate channels all the way back to video memory, then likely one would be prioritized over the other, only one could be active, and they would not be able to output simultaneously.
Another potential problem is that TVs and computer monitors generally want to run at very different formats and they require different signal types to be happy. A TV will want an interlaced output whereas a computer monitor will not. And a TV will want a very low resolution, like 640 x 480, whereas a computer monitor will be happiest at a much higer resolution.
I hope for you that someone else has this working and chimes in with some practical advice. I try to avoid making posts where I have no practical advice to offer and only bad news, but in this case I thought you might want to know about some potential barriers to success. Good luck.

  • DVI-DVI vs. DVI-VGA or other adapter connections

    Dear all,
I want to buy a new LCD monitor for my PowerPC G5 1,6 GHz with GeForce 6800 GT DDL graphic card.
I wondered whether it is preferable to buy a monitor with DVI port (like my graphic card's) or if it doesn't really matter or let's say make a big difference if I use an adapter to whatever port the monitor has got?
    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers.

Hi! DVI is preferred. Only use an adapter if you have to. Most modern lcds that I've seen have both dvi and vga connections. Tom

  • DVI-I to DVI-I and VGA Adapter work with Apple?

    http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=dvihdmiadapters#features
This is an Extron product. I have a need to go from a Radion 9800 pro DVI-I to an apple 20" Cinema AND 32' LCD VGA.
    Will this work with Apple?

    Hi There,
Whenever I hook up a projector that doesn't work with my MacBook (when it shows just a blank, black screen), the first thing I try is going to System Preferences > Displays and setting the resolution of my desktop to 800x600.
Nine times out of ten, the projector starts right up and works perfectly.

  • DVI-I to DVI-D Cable?

I have two Macbook Pros, and I have one Dell flat-screen monitor. Right now, I hook up one Macbook Pro using the VGA adapter to the monitor. When I want to use my other Macbook Pro with the monitor, I switch the cables out. I know it's a small hassle, but I have to do it frequently, so it annoys me.
On the back of my Dell monitor, I see "Input 2", which is DVI-D. I realize I can toggle between the inputs on my monitor, so I'm thinking I can get a cable that hooks my second Macbook Pro to the DVI-D input, thus eliminating the need to switch cables out all the time.
Unfortunately, I'm new to the whole video display thing, so I'm not sure which cable to get. My Macbook has a female DVI-I port (unless my research has been misguided). The DVI-D port on my monitor is also female. So my assumption is that I need a male DVI-I to male DVI-D cable.
I just wanted to check with the experts on this forum before buying something that might not achieve the desired results (i.e., keeping both Macbooks constantly hooked up to the same monitor and toggling between the displays). This is the cable I was looking at:
    http://www.startech.com/item/DVIVGAYMM6-DVI-I-male-to-DVI-D-male-VGA-male-splitt er.aspx
I realize it's a splitter, which does more than I need, but I couldn't find just a plain ol' male DVI-I to male DVI-D cable (I did look in the Apple store). Maybe I wasn't entering the right search terms into Google, though.
Any advice? Am I on the right track here? Would it be better to get a different cable and add some sort of adapter?
    Thanks!

All you need is a DVI-D to DVD-D cable cable. A DVI-D plug will fit in a DVI-I connector.
