DVI to ADC adapter options

I just bought a Mac mini, which has a DVI port and I want to use my old 17" display that has an ADC port. Do I have any alternatives other than Apple's ADC to DVI converter? It seems expensive ($99) compared to other converters I've used in the past (~$15). It will be the only monitor on this computer. Thanks!

There are alternatives to the Apple item, but they are typically roughly the same price - see http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD for example, and http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_ADC-converter.html#dviadc which is more expensive still!
The reason they are more expensive than the other types of adaptor is that they do more than simply reroute pins. And of course the market for them is relatively small, so you don't get the benefits of the economy of scale you do with other devices.

Apple DVI to ADC Adapter with new mini

Has anyone have any experience using the Apple $99 DVI to ADC Adapter
with a New ( or old ) Mac Mini... I have a 22 inch Apple Cinema and
I love it... especially the non-glare screen.
The only complaints I've heard were the ADC Adapter size was large and it gets hot.
Anything else???? Does the sleep feature work?

I currently use Apple's $99.00 DVI to ADC adapter with pre 2009 Mac Mini and Apple 17" ADC Studio monitor.
This setup in use for approx. 2 years now and to date no problems observed.
The unit's dimensions are approx. 4" x 4" x 1.5".
In use from 9:00 am this morning, in use as I type, I place my hand on unit now. The unit is warm to the touch. I can leave my hand on unit for 15-20-30 minutes. Certainly not HOT.
I have had sleep/wake problems with both mini and monitor in the past. I cant say that these issues are related to or caused by the dvi/adc adapter. I have no current sleep/wake problems.
UPS/System preference settings can also affect sleep/wake options.
Sleep feature works as the unit is also connected via usb to the machine.

DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work

Greetings folks,
I have an Apple DVI to ADC adapter going to a Formac 17" ADC display or alternatively an Apple 17" LCD ADC display. The displays do not function with either my MacBook Pro or my MacBook. I can't figure out which the Macs are having a problem with, the displays or the adapter. It all works fine with my PowerBook G4 and both of my PowerMac G4's. Also, regular DVI and VGA displays work fine with the MacBook Pro and the MacBook.
I have talked with tech support and they have not been able to find a solution. I will bring the adapter to my Apple store to see if they can determine the problem.

Okay, here's an update: the DVI to ADC adapter does work with the Apple displays that I have tried, but it won't work with the Formac. I have tried multiple time to contact them, but to no avail... they don't even respond to threats of posting my opinion of them, which is this:
DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM FORMAC! They make quality products, but their customer service is a big time joke! They won't take care of you.

DVI to ADC Adapter question

I've got a Quicksilver 933 (2002) and want to get the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Video Card. I have a 17" Apple Cinema Display and want to add the new 20" Apple Display for an extended desktop. The ATI card has 2 DVI outs. I will need a DVI to ADC adapter. My question is, the adapters (see below) say they are good for connecting to DVI-D out and the 9600 card is DVI-I. Does this make a difference? Does anyone out there have experience running a set-up like this? I would hate to spend $200. on this card and $80. on the adapter only to find out I couldn't use the 17" Display.
My other choice is the 64MB ATI 9000 Pro Mac edition. (This has both a DVI out and an ADC out so I would save ~$200.) I will not be doing any gameing, just extended desktop work with Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver. Would there be any noticeable difference between the 9000 and 9600 in these activities? As always, thanks for your input.

I am in a similar situation.
I have a 2003 Quicksilver 933 with dual display
currently running.
(Using a 17" Apple Display & a 17" Sony CRT).
I eventually wish to either upgrade to a 20+ cinema
display and use the 17" Apple display as my extended
desktop, but that may still be down the road a bit.
Until then, Im looking to ditch the CRT for a 15 (or
so) LCD to dave on desktop space and make an attempt
to match the 17'' Apple Display.
Ok, on to the question.
I purchased a ATI Raedon 9800Pro Mac Edition and then
noticed it only have two DVI connections. This won't
be a problem for the eventual LCD upgrade (which has
DVI connection), but I need to purchase a DVI to ADC
convertor for the 17" Apple display.
The Radeon 9800 has DVI and VGA and S-Video output, I believe. If you want to run 2 LCD monitors, one of them will have to have a VGA input (which you can't get on Apple monitors).

No, if the adaptor funcftions properly, there is no loss from DVI to ADC.
2) I believe there are mulitple brands out there
doing this conversion. (Apple, Geffen, etc..) Any
brand looking to be more preferred over the other?
The Geffen adaptor is presently the only one which will support the 17" ADC CRT studio monitor (as well as the ADC LCD monitors).
3) With the convertor will I still be able to power
my mac on and off with the use of the display power
button?
You can power the Mac on, however, some adaptors don't allow you to power it off.

Nothing simpler, smaller, less expensive than Apple's DVI to ADC adapter?

My 2001 vintage 466 MHz PowerMac G4 with 15" Studio Display has served me well over the years. But, alas, she's running Panther (10.3.9) and lacks the requirements to move on to Leopard, which I'm ready to do. So, I decided to upgrade the machine. Since the other parts of the system (monitor, keyboard, mouse & printer) were just fine, I decided that a new Mac Mini would fit the bill nicely. (I'm also a Scotsman, always looking for ways to save money. Perhaps that's part of the problem. )
I received it yesterday and wasn't expecting the ADC-monitor to DVI-computer dilemma. (Which shows you just how out of touch I am with technology's incessant march forward.) So, I investigate solutions.
Imagine my surprise when I discover that the only solution out there is by Apple, in the form of a brick almost as big as my Mini! And, another $100 to boot! I did find a third party solution through a link on Apple's website, but that's $150! (Thanks for the referral, Apple!) My mind is boggled - there must be other available solutions but, if there are, they are evading me.
Does anyone know of any solution that is simpler, smaller and less expensive than Apple's DVI to ADC adapter?

The Apple adapter is the only solution if you really want to keep that display. It might be a good time to look for a larger display, with DVI.
I am using the Apple adapter with my seven year old 22" display, but I wouldn't want to run OS X on anything smaller.

Cinema Display to be used with DVI to ADC Adapter

I have a 22-inch Apple Cinema Display (clear enclosure) connected to my Mac mini (Mid 2011) through Apple DVI to ADC Adapter.
So far, this configuration has allowed me to get beautiful OS X desktop displayed on my old Cinema Display, though it wasn't perfect.
Pressing the display's power button does not turn off the display nor put my Mac to sleep. Instead, holding the button just makes the power LED brighter than usual.
Two USB ports on the back of the display doesn't seem to work. It does charge my iPod, but any device connected to those ports (including iPod) won't be recognized on my Mac.
Can anybody see what's going on here and help me troubleshoot the issue?

That's normal with the DVI to ADC adapter. ADC (Apple Display Connector) has pins for power control but there are no such pins in DVI so the display's power button has no way to control the computer. I don't know why the power light brightens when pushed, but mine does it too.
Two USB ports on the back of the display doesn't seem to work. It does charge my iPod, but any device connected to those ports (including iPod) won't be recognized on my Mac.
Is the adapter's USB cable plugged into the computer? The displays ports are USB 1.1. Some devices, such as iPhones, require USB 2.0.
Failure of the USB circuitry is common with those displays. My 22" ADC display started having USB problems years ago. It started with intermittent USB port problems, then it started interfering with computer sleep. Since I now use the display with a DVI to ADC adapter I don't connect the adapter's USB cable (and don't use the display's USB ports), so don't have any computer sleep problems.

Mac Mini and DVI to ADC adapter

I have an old Apple Cinema Display with an ADC port. I have the DVI to ADC adapter, which I have been using to connect to an old Power Mac which is on its last legs. I want to replace the Power Mac with a mac mini and connect it to the display from the HDMI-DVI cable (included) to the DVI-ADC adapter, and then connect on to the Display. The Apple sales representative (after laughing for a while, which I thought was fairly insensitive) said that I won't have audio with this setup, and I will have to get a whole new display. Is this true?

Mac Mini - DVI to ADC Adapter - Cinema HD 23" ADC anybody?

I would like to buy a Mac Mini, but I'm not sure if it will handle an old Cinema HD 23" ADC through a DVI to ADC adapter. Anybody has this configuration? Which is the maximum resolution possible?

I'm almost certain the DVI to ADC adapter only works with ADC based flat panel displays. DVI ports can output digital or analogue signals (or a combination of the two). The adapter seems to provide digital, which is why it works with the LCD displays, but not analogue, which is why it doesn't work with the CRT displays.
Confusingly Apple did a 17" Studio display both as a CRT and LCD.
Dr. Bott do a similar adapter but they explicitly state it's not compatible with the 17" CRT.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there's a solution, as the display has an ADC connector yet I'm not aware of any adapters available that will work.

DVI to ADC adapter STudio display will not power on when used with Mac mini

I have a Mac mini and I just purchased a used apple 17" CRT studio display. I bought the DVI to ADC Adapter as recommended by my Apple store. When I hook everything up (I have checked and redone this two times) The power light will come on for about a second when presses. When the mini powers up there is a blank dark screen. I would appreciate any ideas on this. thanks!

Just inherited the display for a G4 gigabit ethernet model that has an ADC plug (just to confirm: http://www.dvigear.com/education/connectors//adc-m.jpg).
I would like to connect to my unibody MBPro, and I'm assuming I'd be using a Mini Display > DVI adapter, then a DVI > ADC adapter (found a few but not positive they're exactly what I need).

The DVI to ADC adapter contains a power supply for the display. (That's why it costs so much.) Although this setup should work, there might be problems, since the two adapters might not be completely compatible. See if they will let you bring your display and MBP to the store to try them.

This one is a little tricky...i have a 20" Apple Display with an ADC connection.....my friend who owns an older G4 believeed to have a DVI-D and VGA connection wants to buy it but we're wondering if there is any way to hook it up.....I have an Apple DVI to ADC adapter but I don't know if it works for just DVI-I or what...he lives a few hours away so we can't just try it out....if anybody knows anything please let me know.

DVI-to-ADC adapter dying?

Hi,
I have an old 22" (not 23") Cinema Display purchased late 2001 or early 2002. It's been working fine all this time. I got a MacBook Pro 15" in April 2008. I also bought Apple's DVI-to-ADC adapter a little later. It worked great for a while. Then the USB seemed to be having problems, so I just didn't use that part of the adapter. Otherwise, no complaints. Video has always been flawless.
Lately, the video has been going out and is behaving badly enough that I either need to replace the adapter or buy a new monitor. These two symptoms arrived at about the same time:
1. With no computer connected to the DVI cable of the adapter, but the adapter plugged into the wall power and also connected to the ADC port of the monitor, I'd find the monitor screen blank but the power-button LED glowing. When it was in this condition, I couldn't then connected it to the laptop and have it work. Monitor stayed dark.
2. To fix #1, I started to leave the adapter unplugged from the wall power and only plug it in when I connected it to my MacBook Pro. This seemed to fix the problem for a few weeks, but lately when using it with the computer, the Cinema Display's screen would suddenly go black. The laptop screen was unchanged, so the laptop thought the primary screen was still the Cineme Dissplay (I had my menu bar on the Cinema Display). Unplugging from the wall and replugging the adapter seems to help, but the duration of working video is becoming less and less.
The adapter doesn't seem especially hot, so I don't think it's overheating, at least not in a major way. If the problem is the monitor, I don't want to buy another adapter to have the same problem and have spent another $100.
I scanned through earlier messages on this forum and didn't see anything that quite matched my situation.
Any suggestions?

Not sure if you've solved this yet or not, but if you haven't, try shining a torch at the monitor after it's gone dark. See if you can still see a very dim image (it may help to put an animation/movie with lots of contrast on that screen). If you can, then the monitor's backlight circuitry has given up the ghost. If you can't see an image, then it'll be something else which needs further testing... Hope that helps a little

DVI to ADC Adapter issues

I have a PowerBook G4 and a 17" studio display that is connected to a DVI to ADC adapter. One day I must of done something because now when I start up with the monitor connected is immediately shuts down the system. Also when I have my lap top turned on and I plug in the monitor It goes through the start up process and the 17" will display the shut down selection and then just quit! Very frustrating!!!
I did check to make sure that the monitor is working and it is. I checked it on my G$ box and it started up perfectly! Any idea as to what is wrong or what I need to change on my PowerBook to make the monitor work? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!!

So can you confirm that this is the adapter you are using, and that the power supply (top item in the picture) is plugged into a live outlet and appears to be providing power to the display?

DVI to ADC adapter forcing powerbook to shut down on connection

Hi there,
I have been using my powerbook 1.25GHz for about 8 months with my DVI to ADC adapter to connect to my 22" cinema display with no troubles whatsoever. Yesterday evening when I came home as soon as connected the adapter to my powerbook- it shut down my powerbook within a couple of seconds. Not only that I was blasted with a 3-5 second low tone from my powerbook as it attempted to restart. At the same time the sleep light (one that purrs softly in sleep mode on the powerbook) flashed in quick succession for the length of time that my powerbook made the the long beep noise.
Following this the computer then makes the usual start up noise but nothing happens on either my powerbook display or the 22" display. I am then required to take out the adapter connection from my powerbook and my computer restarts normally after holding down the start button again.
I have tried a few times now to connect the adapter with the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what the sound being emitted is all about and the disco light display from my powerbook?

The exact same things (low tone, furiously flashing sleep light) has happened to me on several occasions, and it happened again today. I just googled up the symptoms and this is where I landed. The only thing I can correlate among our experiences is that the DVI connection on the powerbook is involved (the problem may or may not have anything to do with the ADC adapter).
For my problem, it's usually occurred after I've either just connected or disconnected a second display using an Apple dvi-->adc powered adapter or a small unpowered dongle (dvi -->vga) for an lcd projector. The restart after either one fails can take quite awhile.
Twice in the past six months, I've been at the "two minute warning" before a presentation, and the book has crapped out just as I connect it to the projector and then it's gone into the psycho light and sound mode you described. Today's failure occurred after unhooking from the powered Apple DVI-->ADC adapter at my desk to go down the hall for a meeting. The computer went into blue screen and stayed there after it was disconnected from the Studio Display and DVI-->ADC adapter. Attempting to hard reset/powerdown by holding down the power button initiated the tone/light flashing.
These few cases may seem pretty isolated, but perhaps a pattern will emerge if people keep adding their experiences.
