10G database documentation HTML web pages not searchable by IE

Within Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0, I can not use the IE find [<CNTRL> F] capabilities on the 10G database HTML documentation on technet. (I am not an IE novice) For instance, say I was interested in the "KEEP INDEX" parameter of the "ALTER TABLE" command.
I would use the 10G Database HTML documentation for "ALTER TABLE" found at the link,

Then, since this document is 100's of pages long, I would use IE to search the page for what I was looking for - EDIT -> FIND (on this Page). I would type KEEP INDEX in the search box and bang I should find it on the page.
Although this works on every other web site (including the 9i documentation), IE returns the error "Error: 49 Permission Denied". How helpful is a help document that does this?
Please correct this issue!!!!! Please don't ask me to use a PDF either, they are so painfully slow.

Further to my earlier post, I have just read an entry noting that if you already own a domain name, and ask your hosting service to forward and mask your iWeb '08 created, web.mac.com site to your personal domain, chances are that due to the masking of the site on web.mac.com, Safari browsers interpret the masking as being the end of the site, and as such, just return a blank page?
This may explain the problem. However, call me old fashioned, and possibly a little naive, but surely this cannot be the problem?? It's OK in Firefox!

The future of traditional Web Content Management (WCM) systems is uncertain. Businesses
are increasingly implementing enterprise portal solutions that are primarily focused
on application and business process integration. However, existing Web Content
Management systems that concentrate on the creation, maintenance and provision of
web-based content, for example for intranet operation, have become established in todays
enterprise. This development presents a new challenge for enterprise IT departments:
These two very separate system worlds must be unified both in design and technology.
Enterprise portals represent a direct advancement for intranets and dynamic websites,
mainly due to the user-specific integration of applications and information in a single,
unified user interface. In order to make a clear distinction, the terms intranet and portal
should be defined:
An intranet provides employees with information using static HTML pages and/or a Web
Content Management System. Access to individual web-based applications from the
intranet is made possible by simple links. Consequently, an intranet is designed mainly
for the purpose of information distribution and is only marginally involved in process optimization.
Since there is no logical connection between the applications, users are forced
to log in separately to various applications with different user registration data. The required
user names and passwords are usually not consistent throughout a company. Furthermore,
roles are not part of intranet design and it is not possible to customize the
user interface (user customizing).
An enterprise portal is a complex integration infrastructure that consolidates application
systems, services and information from a variety of different sources within an enterprise
into a central, unified user interface (e.g. web browser) that is individually adapted for
each employee and accessible from every desktop. Enterprise portal content is individually
adapted for every employee or group; this is made possible by corresponding role
concepts.
Enterprise portals have opened a single point of entry for a variety of different business
applications. So why not simply present the complex content required directly within the
enterprise portal and completely replace existing extranet or intranet solutions? Most
new generation portal software products neglect this concept. The Content Management
they offer out of the box is rudimentary at best. Unfortunately, many IT decision makers
are either partially or completely unaware of this shortcoming.
On the other hand, there are highly sophisticated Web Content Management systems and
products on the market functionalities range from Internet building blocks for creating
simple homepages to adequate workflow integration within the Information Lifecycle.
Moreover, these systems include additional tools for generating navigational structures
as well as editing and authoring tools for managing content on websites. Link management,
approval workflows and access controls for designated areas of the web-based
solution are practically taken for granted. A Web Content Management system delivers
the technologies, tools and methods for creating, managing, storing, preserving and providing
electronic content throughout the entire enterprise. This generally recognized defnition originates from AIIM International (Association for Information and Image Management
International). Unlike document management, which can be described as a database-
supported management system for electronic documents, Web Content Management
encompasses web publishing, publishing intranet or internet pages and provides
structured publication of web-based information.
At first glance, deploying Web Content Management systems allows enterprises to unify
web-based content and application-based information within a single enterprise portal,
regardless of the format in which the information is available.
Some WCM software manufacturers have already taken action and provide specifically
for the SAP NetWeaver Portal comprehensive integration packages that integrate
their high-performance Web Content Management systems in the portal software.
But how do companies manage and supply the content to be published in an enterprise
portal created on the basis of business-oriented portal software? At a time when users
are already confronted with heterogeneous environments in their day-to-day work, every
additional system is simply another burden. Integrating a high-performance, technologically
advanced Web Content Management system in an enterprise portal is problematic
because, to a great extent, both software solutions implement competing concepts and
technologies which must be further explained.
Both systems require their own server infrastructure and rely on their own, completely
proprietary software architecture based on a separate database and/or data storage system.
As a result, additional expenditure is incurred for all of the following aspects:
· Parallel expenditure for hardware
· Parallel expenditure for operation and monitoring
· Parallel expenditure for backup & restore
· Parallel expenditure for security design and implementations
· Parallel expenditure for performance optimization
· Parallel expenditure for administrator training
From the perspective of an enterprise portal infrastructure, a Web Content Management
system is a third-party system which must be integrated via interfaces. Thus, the following
issues must be addressed:
(1) Parallel existence of two navigational structures: a) navigational structures, pages
and roles within the enterprise portal and b) menu items and storage structures
within the external WCM system.
(2) Editors are required to learn how to work with two different tools and user interfaces.
(3) A search function must be developed that can be utilized for both systems; access
rights for both systems must be given special attention here.
(4) Parallel existence of two authorization concepts. Defining access rights in an enterprise
portal is generally possible on the basis of users, groups, and portal roles in
particular. Access rights management in a WCM system has its own administrator interfaces
and authorization objects which need to be aligned.
(5) Parallel workflow concepts: An enterprise portal has application-oriented workflow
procedures that are usually based on the user administration integrated into the portal
(users, roles and groups). A WCM system often uses its own staging concept for
approving web pages based on its own workflow which exists parallel to the portal
workflow.
(6) Parallel user registration data management: Enterprise portals offer powerful features
for user administration which must be used in addition to or in competition
with the WCM system user administration. It makes sense to use a single LDAP interface
for both systems. However, this does not solve the key problem: both systems
have their own administration tools for user management.
(7) Parallel security concepts: Enterprise portals offer very powerful security design concepts
and functions; a WCM system has its own design concepts and these must also
be managed and taken into consideration.
(8) Some external WCM systems generate portal objects (e.g. menu items in portal
roles) via interfaces. Changes to these generated objects are overwritten during
each generation process making it impossible to use all of the functionality of the
portal tools. Only the features that are generated and/or supported by the WCM system
can be fully leveraged.
(9) Parallel concepts for link management: There are different methods for creating and
managing links in both software systems. A particular problem is posed by targets
that affect the role-based navigational structure of the enterprise portal which generally
cannot be conveniently selected as most editors would expect.
(10) Parallel page creation and layout concepts (look & feel): Both systems have their
own concept of performance-optimized page presentation. Similarly, both systems
offer different methods and tools for editing the look & feel of the pages.
Taking the above issues into consideration, serious thought should be given to integrating
an external Web Content Management system in an enterprise portal. From a longterm
perspective and when taking the Total Cost of Ownership into consideration, operating
two IT systems as complex as these parallel to one another is impractical, even if the
WCM system manufacturers offer portal-specific integration packages for their software.
A closer look at these packages shows that many of the interface problems and design
redundancies detailed above will nevertheless continue to persist.
From the authors perspective, every project involving Web Content Management in enterprise
portals should question whether or not the desired editing processes and WCM
requirements could be served with the standard features of the enterprise portal or covered
by an expansion package or implementation and project work. This solution path is
further explained in the following practical example.
Practical example: Web Content Management in the SAP NetWeaver Portal
With its SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP not only provides the basis for a successful
backend system for business process optimization, but also delivers basic Web Content
Management functionalities. In order to structure the content, the SAP NetWeaver Portal
utilizes a central tool - the Portal Content Studio.
The Portal Content Studio offers a central environment for developing and managing all
types of portal content, such as portlets (iViews), pages, layouts, worksets, roles, and
packages.

The most important object in the Portal Content Catalog is the role, which serves two
purposes: First of all, the role is assigned to users or user groups, achieving the typical
personalization required of an enterprise portal, secondly, the role in the SAP portal defines
the menu structure that is linked to the role at the same time.
A role can be implemented as a hierarchical tree structure with an infinite number of
nested objects. The tree structure is formed by creating folders. Pages or iViews can be
positioned at any level within the hierarchy. There are different types of iViews; typical
examples of iViews are R/3 transactions, eBusiness applications, Internet/intranet applications,
or content-based iViews (HTML content, text, graphics). iViews are typically positioned
and arranged on pages but they can also be independently built into roles.
Within a role, so-called Entry Points must be defined which are then included as a menu
item in both of the top navigation bars of the portal menu. The portal menu is generally
comprised of multiple roles (with corresponding Entry Points). However, the order of the
menu items can be defined (using the Attribute Priority).
Additionally, SAP provides an Internet platform that offers a selection of ready-to-use
portal contents in a general catalog that can be imported into the Portal Content Studio.
SAP calls these out-of- the-box solutions SAP Business Packages. Partners and other
software manufacturers are able to provide solutions and/or interfaces based on this
platform and have them certified by SAP (SAP offers a certification program especially
designed for these solutions). The iView list for the so-called Portal Content Portfolio
(formally iView Studio) includes thousands of iViews.

In many aspects, the tools and capabilities of the Portal Content Studio are comprehensive
and advanced yet they are not sufficient for comprehensive Web Content Management.
First and foremost, the Portal Content Studio supports the establishment of rolebased
navigational structures and the definition of portal pages on which iViews can be
positioned and arranged. This method of content creation is comparatively complex and
not suited for the daily business of an editor, who is typically less involved in changing
content structures and more involved in changing the content elements contained therein
(text, graphics, flash files, links, documents, etc.). Pragmatic methods and simple
mechanisms are desired for the management of this content. The material in the content-
based iViews must be freely definable through simple and intuitive means and editors
should be able to create content themselves.
The SAP Knowledge Management (KM) component is available for storing content and
documents in SAP NetWeaver. The content to be presented can be stored and managed
via a folder structure that must be managed parallel to the Portal Content Directory.
However, in the standard feature set of the SAP NetWeaver Portal, the KM folder where
this content is later to be saved must be defined for every content-based KM iView. An
automatic link between the current role position and the KM location is not created. Simple
shifting between read and edit mode is another feature that is not available in the
standard version despite the fact that this functionality is extremely important for editors.
Despite the multitude of existing functions, the standard SAP NetWeaver Portal offers
insufficient capabilities for comfortable Web Content Management. Editing capabilities for
XML forms, so-called docs iViews, URL-iViews or TREX searches are offered but their use
is anything but intuitive and involves a great deal of administrative expenditure. This
makes a high level of knowledge in building web content within the SAP NetWeaver
Portal a prerequisite. Above all, there are little or no possibilities for using Web Content
Management functionality such as the construction of generic content structures, link
management, multi-language support or a navigational context available from the search
results without the relevant programming or HTML knowledge.
This is where an enhancement from btexx business technologies GmbH, the Business
Package easyWCM for Web Content Management in SAP NetWeaver Portal comes in. It
uses the Portal Content Studio as a central tool yet significantly accelerates editing processes.
It allows content elements to be linked effectively with portal objects that are created
automatically through the use of easyWCM iViews. Every authorized user can create,
publish and edit information.
This Business Package automatically stores the content elements in the KM component
assigned in the navigation structure in the background and makes them available for further

Management Components; no third-party servers or additional software products are required.
The portal server is solely responsible for providing the runtime platform.
A third-party Content Management System may be able to offer a larger selection of features
than easyWCM but it implementing and operating the additional solution will require
a great deal more resources. The easyWCM Business Package for the SAP Net-
Weaver Portal provides Web Content Management simply and effectively while supporting
the following essential requirements:
Complete integration for SAP Portal Content Studio
An editor does not need any tools other than the SAP Portal Content Studio. The desired
navigational structures are provided as SAP portal roles in the SAP Portal Content Studio
- the application of easyWCM iViews is thereby possible anywhere within portal roles,
worksets and pages. The main advantage of this solution is that the editors enter content
in a single environment in which all web content and navigational structures are stored
and administered.
Inplace editing:
End-users and editors work with the same portal roles. Therefore, no separate portal
roles for providing and maintaining the content are required! As an editor, easyWCM
iView offers you the ability to add and work on content components directly within the
portal (Inplace Editing). Furthermore, the editor is able to use SAP KM standard functions
(e.g. authorization assignment, workflow, feedback, rating, etc.) directly within the content
component.
Automatic creation of KM folders
A general standard is that everyone must indicate the respective KM file path in which
the content components are to be stored. This requires a great deal of effort when maintaining
portals with a large number of web content elements. easyWCM automatically
produces the necessary listings with the desired KM authorizations at runtime and simultaneously
activates the desired KM services (life span, manual arrangement, history,
workflow). During shifting or copying processes in the SAP Portal Content Studio, the
elements are automatically moved and copied within the KM!
Preview functionality from Portal Content Studio
A preview function for each form is easily accessible with a single click. It is also possible
to preview items directly from the Portal Content Studio in order to view the complete
portal page, for example. easyWCM iViews were designed in a way that also enables users
to enter and edit content directly from the SAP Portal Content Studio preview function.
Multiple use of content elements
easyWCM iViews may be adjusted in such a way as to allow content to be used more
than once. Using this option, the content is not stored by the role and/or page, but is
linked centrally within the easyWCM iView. The multiple use of content components is
important, for example, if the right column of the portal presentation is exactly the same
for several pages (e.g. for contact data, partners, advertisements, etc.).
Approval workflow
If desired, the SAP KM approval workflow may be activated in order to manage content
elements. Changes to content elements will only be visible after the approval. All XML
forms provided by easyWCM support the SAP KM approval workflow and indicate the
permission status by using traffic lights.
Version management
If desired, the SAP KM version management may be activated in order to manage content
elements. An editor with the proper authorization can specify the portal pages on
which version management should be activated. When version management is activated,
it is possible to replace older content components or to cancel incorrect modifications.
With each change, a new version is automatically stored and documented including the
date and the person who made the change.
Life span
If desired, the SAP KM life span function may be activated in order to manage content
elements. An editor with the proper authorization can specify the portal pages on which
the life span function should be activated. Activating the life span function makes it possible
to publish a content component for a specific period (this is useful for news or
events, for example).
Authorization-based search functionality
The SAP NetWeaver standard component TREX is used for the search function. One of
the key advantages of easyWCM compared to external WCM solutions is that the search
is implemented completely on the basis of the SAP NetWeaver platform and, in particular,
that it is dependent on the authorization status. A separate search machine with its
own user and authorization administration is not required.
Multi-language support
easyWCM automatically detects the language of the editor and stores the content in
separate folders. Folders for content in different languages are created based on the active
portal language.
Ready-to-use forms and pages
easyWCM contains a set of immediately useable portal roles and pages which may be
used for your desired menu structures and page layouts. As such, easyWCM provides the
ability to create and maintain Internet pages without special HTML programming knowledge.
easyWCM also contains more than 30 XML forms based on the XML forms builder
(SAP standard) which can be used for content creation. These XML forms may also be
custom designed to fit your needs.
Personalized user interface
easyWCM determines the user interface depending on portal authorizations of the
user/editor and the corresponding authorizations of the respective KM folders. The

We are getting ¿ stored into our Oracle 10g database (Microsoft fault)

We are getting ¿ stored into our Oracle 10g database that is using WE8ISO8859P1 character set.
Problem is caused by the following:
Microsoft released software (in particularly MS Word) before considering any ANSI or ISO standard (although they claimed so).
At that time of pioneering graphical interface - they were the standard. Since then things changed. Microsoft initially targeted US marked, however very soon they wanted to expanded to Europe. For that they needed to get standardized character set instead of one initially being in use. Microsoft re-mapped character set in newer applications using Windows-1252 character set which is compatible with ISO-8851-1 (we are using in our Java Web applications). That cleared obstacles to forward on European market, where extended characters are necessary (like in French, Dutch, German languages...)
What happened with the initial character codes before Microsoft agreed with ISO to standardize characters? Well - Nothing.
So what are the consequences of that?
If we are using Microsoft Word document in conjunction with one of the oldest character set (universe) the ice-age character mapping is still there. So when we "cut and paste" the content to another application, characters sets are not mapped anymore. Especially French language "is sensitive to this" The Microsoft character set in Word decimally coded 146 ( ' ) is very often used in French.
Therefore if the text is generated in MS Word using old character mapping (universe) which we do, and using method of "cutting and paste" we are mismatching character set interpreted by other, newer applications.
Initially in the MS words (apostrophe) ' had code 191; then later after implementing Windows 1252 character set being moved to code 146 in accordance to ISO. Well ISO threat character coded 191 as ¿. So if you are using MS Word universe character set, ' looks like ' but in newer applications or ISO compatible applications it looks like ¿.
Can anyone provide me with periodically cleanup routines that replace garbled characters entered by Microsoft applications into Oracle database ?

Building Dynamic web sites... where do you start these days?

OK... first off, I'm no coding expert but I have used Dreamweaver for many years to build web sites using a pretty basic ms access databases to generate a few dynamic web pages in .asp.
My question is, since the changes following Adobe Dreamwever CS5.5, what is the best way to develop dynamic sites. I want to update my existing web site (www.britishbutterflies.co.uk) and also move the dynamic content to a modern database/scriting language. I intend to build the new site using a responsive layout. I don't want to host the site via Adobe.
I'm sure I'm not the only one completely confused with the plethora of apps and software packages Adobe are currently promoting but can't seem to find any info which provides a clear guide as to what software/approach is best. Is Adobe Muse the best option - can this help with coding dynamic content like dreamwevare used too and can I host the site with my own web hosts?
Although the code produced by Dreamweaver was never perfect or the most up-to-date, those of us interested in doing a bit of dynamic web development on a non-commercial scale could get away with doing so up until Dreamweaver CS6. Now the whole thing seems like a pot of worms and dynamic web design only open to those with pots of cash and lots of time and a phd in astrophysics? :-)

Not sure what you're refering to in the part about hosting with Adobe. You've never needed to do that at any point, and still don't. The "Creative Cloud" is, in my opinion, a terrible name for Adobe's current subscription service. The programs through it are still installed and reside fully on your machine. The websites you make are hosted wherever you choose.
Muse would not be the way to go. It's meant to target non-coding designer who wants to work with the internet and put a lot of bells and whistles on their site. The code it produces is very difficult to work with or make changes to.
DWCS6 still has its database interactions, those were removed (and for the most part, put back with both free and paid third party extensions) in DWCC. You can have both DWCS6 and DWCC installed on the same machine with a Creative Cloud subscription.

I can open Database Control Webpage on the database machine by typing

But can not open it from another PC
When I do following from another PC

On the other PC I also tried adding 136.18.70.189 to
tools - internet options - security - local internet - sites - advanced - add this web

But it did not work

Hello, Oracle XE can not create more than one instance, the other editions yes, but like other editions XE allows you to create database schemas, schemas logically grouped objects like tables, views, indexes created by a user. By creating an Oracle user is associated with a schema of the same name.
Using SYS or system accounts for creating user accounts.
Syntax to create a user:
create user Your_user
IDENTIFIED BY password
default tablespace users;
grant connect, resources to your_user;

Errors when using Web Content Reporting

Hi,
has anybody installed Web Content Reporting from the SDN download successful?
We got through the db-update and ran the aggregator component.
But we have two errors:
1.) When restarting the service, we get the following error:

did you find out why there is nothing displayed? I experience the same issue, the lists in the FORM iView are empty.
Is the aggregator not working? I get the following in the log of:

How PLM documents saved in the Content Server or in the database.

Hi All,
Please tell me the concept about given below scenario:
Normally PLM documents are either saved in the Content Server or in the database.
What if we have neither configured a database nor a content server. Where are they being stored then.
what exactly Document serever , how the PLM document save on Content Server or in data base server.

Oracle 10g Database conflicts with HTMLDB

Hai all,
I have encountered a strange conflict when I am trying to work out with Oracle 10g database and the famous HTML DB.
It is like this:
I have a 10g DB installed and an ASP application that works on this 10g instance via "Microsoft ODBC driver for oracle" perfectly.
Now I have downloaded and installed the 10g Companion CD and installed the HTML DB 1.5 along with the mandatory Apache web server. Good!! I could scrawl through the database using the HTML DB, creating applications, forms, items and etc fancy things without any issues.
The problem that I found was:
The ASP based application that used to work initially now is erroring out saying that "TNS could not resolve service name".
I thought that the Listener might be damaged or the ASP site was damaged or the Microsoft ODBC driver files were damaged and several other vauge guessings.
I have tested the issue in several ways (reinstalled oracle, the DB, the ASP Applicaton, re-configurin listener in a variety of ways) but every time installing BLINDLY the companion CD too. Nothing seem to work.
Then I recollected that the same issue I have encountered in the past with the installation of Oracle 8i and Developer 2000, where the TNS listener configured by the former damages the one configured by the later and vice-versa.
Basing on this past reminiscence, I finally stopped installing Companion CD over the Oracle installation and carried out the DB installation and the ASP based app. And everything worked fine.
CAN anybody tell me what is going wrong with these two oracle products(Oralce 10g DB and the HTML DB+Apache)?
WHY always the installation of a CLIENT SW (Developer, HTML DB etc) damages the connection with the database via ODBC drivers?

Here I have one more thing thats not working as I thought. do kindly help me out.
My requirement is to show the list of available storage drives (say C:, d:, e: etc on windows) available on the database server. Let me eloborate my problem well....
i have a Java App that executes a specific SQL script to create a tablespace, a user and the required db objects that my applicaiton needs.
if the Java App runs on the same machine where the oracle instance is running, the Java app pops up a list of available drives on the machine, creates a directory for the tablespace datafiles on the drive selected from the above list box, then runs the script which creates the tablespace and the rest of the things.
But if i run the Java app from another machine on the network, then my BLIND java app is popping up the drives of the local machine but NOT those from the oracle server machine and creates the folder on the local machine but not on the Oracle server and obviously the rest of the phases (tablespace creation itself) are failing as the required folder is not found on the oracle server machine.
the work arounds that i am thinking are:
a) use java ->
get the IP of the oracle server machine ->
use some java api such as java.net, java.io etc ->
create the required folder on the server machine instead of the local machihe
ISSUE: Java network programming is too tough for me(excuse me for this..i am not too good!!)
b) use some oracle sql or pl/sql api s to do the same
ISSUE: not found one!!!!
c) create a java stored procedure/function to get the list of drives of the oracle server and return as a string variable. then call this proc from the Java app once connected to the database....
ISSUE: i have created the SO-CALLEd java func. no compilation or loading errors. but there is no o/p either. but the same code when i run as a java class is showing the desired o/p. here is the code piece...can you please help me out!!!

Oracle 10g Database control installation error

Hi,
Installing oracle 10g database control had give me an error.But Repository created successfully . please find the log file below
Is there i need to install ...? before i start to run emca to install Database Control.
my points of interest are here

i didn't find jms.xml,rmi.xml,http-web-site.xml etc in this location /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole/config/
File/directory /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/sysman/emdrep/config/repository.variables does not exist
Let me know how to slove this error.

Hi all,
i started creating database control repository, when i saw emca running i had seen repository created successfully , but sysman user is not created at this point of time. Then i looked into emca_repos_create_2008-04-10_11-57-03-AM.log file but the file is unable to open because it's looking for file emreposcre.sql which creates sysman user in this location /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/sysman/admin/emdrep/sql/
i feel while installing the database these files are not created....? or i need to run any scripts before running emca ....?
give me some inputs to this thread.

Web Content moved into KM?

I'm looking at incorporating internal web content into our enterprise portal. The website is currently developed using Frontpage, and as such has lots of extra html and javascript that just doesn't need to be there. For example, the layout is entirely table drive (yuc), and there's navigation menus that don't need to be displayed, since the portal will have it's own navigation scheme.
My thought was to extract the content from the website (we have the source, of course), remove the Frontpage garbage, clean up the HTML, and present the content in the portal. I can't just use a URL iView to expose the content (and filter out parts of the page) since as soon as a link is clicked, the entire web page is shown, not just the captured area. Yuck.
The logical place to put the content is in KM, and then expose it via the portal, but I have a few issues around this:
1. All the links in the HTML are absolute. Do I have to convert all these links to KM-based urls, or is there another way? I thought I could use the HTML filter to insert a <base> tag, but this doesn't seem to work (as soon as I defined a HTML filter the repository manager barfs with an error). Should I look at using the HTML Filter further to insert a base tag, or is there a better way?
2. Workflow, and version control. I assume that if I configure the repository correctly, I can implement both workflow (for approvals) and version control - is this right? Ultimately, I would like users able to create content, but require approval for the content to be released into the wild for consumption.
3. Another option we're looking at is using KM solely as a content management system, and using another web app server to present the content. In other words, edit the content via KM (or the Portal Drive), and at various checkpoints extract the content and publish it to the (non-sap) production web server. Is this practical? My guess would be no, since placing the content into KM really implies that you'll be using KM to present the data. My initial tests with the Portal Drive imply that while this would likely be possible, it's probably impractical.
I'm looking for some guidance on how best to proceed with this. Suggestions are most welcome. I would be most interested in knowing how other folks have created internal company information and published it on the portal/km.

I can probably answer your second question based on what we have implemented here. Yes you can have both versioning and approval set up on the same repository. Infact If I am not wrong versioning is needed for approvals to work.

Purpose
This article highlights some important points to consider when performing
a Full System Export and Import.
Scope and Application
It is intended to assist users performing FULL System Exports and Imports.
A Full System Export and Import is a useful way to replicate or clean up
a database. Please note the following guidelines when performing a Full
System Export and Import:
1. When performing the import, ensure you are pointing at the correct
instance. Always check values for the SID and two task driver before
proceeding.
*Note: On Unix systems, just entering a sub-shell, such as using
C-shell, can change the database that the import would work
against.
2. When possible, it is advisable to take a physical copy of the
exported database and the database you intend to import into before
starting the import. This ensures any mistakes are reversible.
3. NEVER run a FULL SYSTEM IMPORT on a machine that has more than one
database UNLESS you are 100% sure all tablespaces have been
pre-created. A full import will create any undefined tablespaces
using the same datafile names as the exported database. There are
situations where this is very dangerous:
-> If the datafiles belong to ANY other database, they will be
CORRUPTED. This is especially true if the exported database is
on the same machine, because its datafiles will be re-used by
the database you are importing into.
-> If the datafiles have names that clash with existing operating
system files.
4. When exporting, it is advisable to also produce a report showing
information you may need before / after the import:
-> List the tablespaces and datafiles
-> List the rollback segments
-> List a count, by user, of each object type such as tables,
indexes, etc.
This enables you to ensure that tablespaces have been pre-created
and to check the success of the import after it is complete.
5. If you are creating a completely new database from an export, remember
to create an extra rollback segment in SYSTEM, and make this available
in the init.ora file before proceeding with the import.
6. There are some versions of export that do not retain sequence numbers
correctly. It is advisable to select next_value for each sequence
after the export so that these can be checked after import.
Following these guidelines will help you to avoid major problems.

Pre-requisites: The copy is between 2 machines, both have to be on the same OS
and have to have exactly the same database version installed.
1. Make sure the database you want to copy was closed with a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE,
SHUTDOWN NORMAL or SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL.
2. Copy init.ora and control files to create instance and be able to go in
mount mode. Check the init.ora for the locations where the controlfiles have
to be, if those locations are not valid on the machine put the control files on
different places and adjust the init.ora accordingly.
3.a. Copy the datafiles (all of them).
b. Copy the redo-logfiles (all of them).
4.a. (Unix only) Set the environment variables:
ORACLE_SID - set to the database name you wish to create
ORACLE_HOME - set to full pathname of the Oracle system home directory
PATH - needs to include $ORACLE_HOME/bin
b. (NT/2000 only) Do 'set ORACLE_SID=<SID>'
Use oradim to create the service for the instance. For more information
on oradim please refer to (the part that refers to creating a new instance):

5. Use servermanager (check the name to use for your version of oracle) or
sqlplus (version 9i and above) to startup the database in mount mode.
Do
CONNECT INTERNAL/<PASSWORD>
then
STARTUP MOUNT
Then do a rename of the copied datafiles if they are not in the same path as on
the other machine. For all the files that are in the result of the query:
SELECT NAME FROM V$DATAFILE;
do
ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<oldfullpath>\<filename>' to <
newfullpath>\<filename>';
6. Query the datadictionary for the old location of the redolog files using:
SELECT MEMBER FROM V$LOGFILE;
If the new place is not the same as the old do:
ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE '<oldfullpath>\<redologfilename>' to &
lt;newfullpath>\<redologfilename>';
7. Now open the database:
ALTER DATBASE OPEN;
