E4200 Bridged Mode - Wireless and Management fail after 36 hours

Greetings all,
I am trying to see if anybody else is having this problem.  I have the E4200 and have it configured in bridged mode.  Once configured, everything works great for 36 hours.
After 36 hours, all wireless devices are unable to pull an IP address and the management IP address of the E4200 stops responding.  The only way to restore service is to reload the router.
I took the first one back to Best Buy and they gave me a new one, however the new router has the same issue.
It seems to me that after 36 hours, the E4200 fails to renew its management IP and also stops forwarding wireless broadcasts (DHCP) requests to my DHCP server.
Thoughts?

Thanks.  The new E4200 firmware has "bridged mode" so basically I just have this thing acting as a Wireless access point that has 5 Gigabit ethernet ports.
This disables the routing engine in the E4200 and it acts as a wireless AP and switch.  The E4200's WAN port then connects to a Gigabit switch located in my telco closet, which is connected to my FiOS Router.
Reason for this setup is so that devices connected to either the Gigabit switch, or to the E4200 via hardwire or wireless will all remain on the same subnet, and not cause the broadcasts to block as packets traverse subnets.

    Thanks a lot
Just want to add that I had to edit grub at start up and add "single" at the end of the kernel line.
The reason is that switching to runlevel 3 didn't work for me.

Can I ask what the fimware version is that you are running on both devices? Also you can contact SBSC at 866-606-1866 for help with trouble shooting this issue.

  • E4200 Bridge Mode + Guest Access?

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up my E4200 in "Bridge Mode," but want to enable a few things in the wireless settings, such as:
    a) choosing SSIDs and network keys,
    b) enable Guest Access
I've been able to get things working without too much hassle:
    * factory reset
    * set wireless SSIDs and network keys
    * enable guess access and set password
    * turn on bridge mode
Everything is basically fine, except that when the device goes into bridge mode it seems that it shuts off *all* web UI. This kind of makes sense, but do I actually understand that correcty? (Or have I simply not found the right connection method?)
If so, it leads to a couple follow-on questions:
    a) How do I disable Bridge Mode if I want to change any settings? (Is the answer just 'factory reset'?)
    b) Can Guest Access mode work in Bridge Mode?
So far, I have not been successful in getting the device to display the login page for Guest Access. I'm not sure if that's a config problem with Guest Access or if that just doesn't work in Bridge Mode.
    Any tips/advice appreciated.
    thx

It's not possible to use guest access in bridge mode. Guest access is only possible when the E4200 operates as router. In bridge mode any wireless network goes directly into the same LAN. Guest separation would not be possible.
Also don't disable the SSID broadcast.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/E4200-Guest-Network-Not-Working/td-p/406345/highl...
What I'm saying is that it is possible and that I am doing just that on our LAN here at work.
You pegged me on the linksys devices not allowing higher subnets. Alas, I am used to using DD-WRT and Tomato for years now (where you can use any subnet mask) and took for granted that I have not seen a stock linksys GUI in a long time. However, in bridge mode on the E4200 you are able to set subnet masks as you wish...

  • E4200 Bridge Mode

Can someone please point out what I am doing wrong here.....
I have my main router, a E4200v2 which I use as a router and it provides wireless signal throughout my house, however reception is not as strong on the upper floor and there is a slight dead spot, so I purchased an E4200 for the uppermost floor.
I set the E4200 to bridge mode so it will act solely as an AP.
However connecting the two routers LAN to LAN and the AP does not access the internet
Setting a static IP for the router, instead of acquiring one via DHCP causes me to not be able to access the admin page on the AP.
Connecting WAN on the E4200 to the LAN on the v2 does not work either.
My goal here is to have my main router on 192.168.1.1 and the AP on 192.168.1.2 where I can access the admin settings for both routers in case I need to make changes.
Can someone point me in the right direction here.....
    thanks,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There are two (2) ways to cascade a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the Linksys router (router A) to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of another router (router B).
This type of cascading requires the main and the secondary routers to be on the same LAN IP segment to allow the computers and other devices to connect to both routers.  This configuration is recommended if you want to share files and resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of router A to the Internet port (WAN port) of router B.
This type of cascading requires the main router and the secondary router to have different IP addresses.  This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers and other devices in the network are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments.  However, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since there are two (2) different networks.
Here is the link for the same: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...

can i plut in the thunderbolt and try it with the firewire adapter in the middle of migration and remove the ethernet cable it was only 50 hours when it was doing it wireleslly and now 110 with the ethernet cable I am going to try removing it at least.

That is a very small price for such a high value migration.

  • [SOLVED]Network Manager Applet and nmcli failing after GCC upgrade

    Hi All,
So I went to update my system today and there were only like 8 or 9 updates. Like many other people I had an issue with gcc and pacman. To fix this I ran
    pacman -S gcc
    Then I ran:
    pacman -Su
which updated pacman itself. On reboot though I noticed network manager applet was unable to find any of my network devices despite the fact that network manager was running and I had an IP address. I killed nm-applet and re-ran it and it spewed errors about not being able to connect to network manager. I tried running nmcli and it did the same thing. However, when I run nmcli as root it works. Looking at the arch wiki they suggest you be a part of the wheel and network group which I made sure I was. Everything was working up until I ran those two updates though. Anyone else have this happen or have any idea what is wrong?
    Thanks,
    Hemmar
EDIT: Never mind - a patch was released for consolekit which fixes the problem.

    Hi guz46
I have already tried removing the ! and the same thing happened ... but I realised today that I was being automatically connected to "Auto eth0" despite there being no cable present. When automatic connection was disabled on "Auto eth0" my 3G connection (ppp0) connected fine.
Could you clarify that the preferred set-up in the /etc/rc.conf for the interfaces is without the !. The Wiki for networkmanager says to disable them, but then states that some may need to be reenabled with no explanation. The purpose of this confuses me!
    Thanks for you help anyways,
    Scott
    EDIT:
I appear to have fixed my problem with the auto connection on the various interfaces by updating my /etc/rc.conf file to:
    #Static IP example
    #eth0="dhcp"
    ppp0="dhcp"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(ppp0 wlan0 eth0)
Thus ensuring that I can connect in order of preference.

  • E4200 bridge mode question

So, with the latest firmware update I could add a second e4200 to my network to use as a bridge or access point?  What I need is another device in my living room that can pick up the wireless signal and dish out network connectivity to my receiver, xbox360, and ps3.  With the new firmware update can this be done with a second e4200?
How does one connect to each e4200 on the network for setup (dohave to change the default ip address of 1?)
I just bought a trendnet TEW-687GA 450 mb/s wireless gaming adapter and a trendnet 5 port switch to accomplish what I mentioned above.  I'm just wondering if there is an advantage to switching over to two e4200's.  The trendnet adapater does not have a 5ghz channel.
    Thanks!

The bridge feature doesn't support wireless bridging. It just dumbs it down to a switch and AP. So unless you flash it with a 3rd part firmware such as dd-wrt, what you are trying to accomplish will be impossible.
I've heard multiple people say that 3rd party firmware for this router is buggy so I would either go with the trendnet and switch setup or the 5ghz capable Linksys WES610n. The 5ghz is ideal for for gaming and streaming media because of less interference compared to the 2.4ghz band. You'll more than likely be able to bond channels with the 5ghz network so that = more bandwidth.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • 1300 bridge with native and management vlan in different vlans

    Hello,
We are going to set up a wireless bridge between two 1300 accesspoints. In our network the native vlan and the management vlan are different vlan's. Will we be able to manage the ap and switch at the "remote" site? Do we have to set up two ssid's, one for native and one for management?
    regards,
    Rutger

    Too answer my own question:
I don't think it is possible. Things work fine by making our management vlan the native vlan on switches and ap's involved. Management IP address on the BVI1 interface and everything works!

  • Best practice to restart weblogic and managed  servers after changing pass

    hi
i need to know if have an installation with the following structer what is the best practice to restart the servers after we change weblogic password ?and i know that i should change boot.properties with the new password ,is there anything else to change ? please advise .
oracle access manager &oid (dose it affected by weblogic password change ?)
    thank you
Edited by: hsweiss on Jul 31, 2012 10:45 AM

the order is to restart:All managed servers and followed by Admin server
If your weblogic server is integrated with oid, you need to change the credentilas in both the places ie weblogic server(boot.properties) and idm server
if your weblogic server is using your internal ldap for the authentication, your idm and oam wil not effect with this change
if you change the boot.properties file that is enough, you don't need to change anywhere

  • Upgrade and Install fails after first boot. Then I am unable to repair

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this?
I've experienced the aqua screen of death with the Upgrade option and was unable to resolve it, even after trying the APE removing technique.
So, I decided to restore back to Tiger 10.4.10 (thanks to Super Dupering prior to upgrade) and try the archive and install option. All appeared to go well, installed fine, allowed me to login and run all my apps. But, upon doing my first reboot after the 'sucessful' install the system just hangs at the gray screen. I tried using Disk Utility from the Leopard DVD, but it's unable to repair permissions.
I got this error message: 'The underlying task reported failure on exit'. Tried many times, I also tried the /sbin/fsck -fy in single user mode.
I tried booting into DiskWarrior 4's. Once in DW4 I ran the Repair function there... Here I got another error message.
    This error being: 'Error -9997'.
OK I thought, something random must have happened. Soooo I restored to Tiger again and ran the Archive and Install option once again.
I'm am again experiencing the exact same problems with freezing gray boot screen and the inability to repair permissions (all after doing my first boot after sucessful install and login/opening of many apps)
Please please please can anyone she some light on this problem???
I'm going to try one more option:
Upgrade after I've disable all startup options and removing anything to do with APE....
    I will report back!
This is really really crap Apple, I can't believe I've spent £85 and probably 15 hours on this sloppy release. Utterly disapointed

    Just me it seems then....
Right, I think it's finally resolved, only after the fifth time. I've now rebooted twice and so far so good.
There was a new message when I powered down for the first time, something along the lines of:
Please wait while your Boot Caches are updated.
This seems to be a reasuring message, I feel almost confident in restarting again.
I upgraded using the following method:
    1. Disabled ALL startup items (System Preferences>Accounts>Login items)
    2. Removed all traces of APE (Application Enhancer) using Finder:
    /Library/Preference Panes/Application Enhancer.prefpane
    /Library/Frameworks/Application Enhancer.framework
    /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Application Enhancer.bundle
    /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.plist
    3. Repaired Permissions
Right, before I perform a new backup I think I'll see how she runs for a week, so I'm sure the boot problem is definitely gone.

  • Profile Manager failed after update

    Hi all
I have just updated my OS X Server to 3.2.1 and after the installing the update (with no restart required) I can no longer access my profile manager web page. The error I am getting is:
    An Error Occured
Reload Profile Manager and try again
Error: SyntaxError: JSON Parse error: Unrecognized token '<'
Can anyone tell me what this means? Has anyone has similar issues with the latest update?
I noticed as well that on the Server app in the profile manager settings some settings have been lost since updating.
Any help will be truly appreciated!
    Regards,
    Ashley

Also, on the Profile Manager settings in the Server app it is showing configure. The first screen says
    Configure Device Management
"you can use this server to manage your users' Apple devices. If the devices have an internet connection, you can remotely lock or wipe them."
The second screen confirms the Organization Information
The third screen wants to confirm a certificate (I am using a self signed certificate). Once you click next it has at the top of the screen Confirm Settings and in the message section it has a warning /!\ sign with an error that says "An error with code -1 occurred"
