Early 2009 24" iMac Haywire Display: LCD Panel or Logic Board?

Hi,
My 24" display just developed severe vertical and horzontal lines, mouse trailing, color changing and flickering.  The problem begins as soon as the computer is turned on (even the Apple screen goes nuts).
When I plug in an external display, the external looks just fine.
This is one of the Nvidia GeForce 9400 chipsets, so there is no separate videocard board to replace - it is integrated onto the logic board.
It seems like it should be the display panel because the external monitor works fine, but these are complicated machines.
This is an iMac 9,1 Early 2009, Core2 2.66 Mhz machine.
Thank you,
Josh

Can you connect an external monitor and test? If the artifacts do not show on the external monitor, some component of the display is faulty but not the logic board. The dispay repair is not cheap but cheaper than replacing an LB
If the same artifacts show on both, well... it's the logic board.
AHT seldom picks up display faults.

  • Do Early 2009 24" iMacs have display oddities - yellow tinge?

    Hi all,
After a dour, very unsatisfying experience with an eagerly awaited 21.5" iMac (and a bad experience at the Apple Store when I tried to replace the unit), I am looking to purchase a 24" refurb unit.
Are the displays on the 24" iMac better - in terms of yellow tinge, gradient display? It would be great if any of the users of the Early 2009 24" iMacs could chime in...
    Changed title to reflect question

Mine does. And just about everyone I've seen does. Apple actually sent me the new one to replace a 2 year old white 24" that exhibited the same problem. And, now that I've seen Apple has finally admitted to an issue on the newest iMacs, I'm calling Apple Care.

  • I need to replace my early-2009 20" iMac Screen. What fits?

I have an early-2009 20" iMac MB417LL/A and I am having a very hard time finding which screen works for this computer. With window computers I just have to type in the name of the computer followed by LCD and I will find the one I need but its not so simple with Macs. Does anyone know where I can find a compatability list or something of that sort? So far I have found that there are apple part numbers but the LCD will be LG with a seperate part number. 661-4983 seems to work. I also found that Dell M201EW02 will work. Is this true?
    Help...please

And from MichelPM's reference to LG as a supplier and your own finding of LG and a part number, you seem to have a match.

  • The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  How do I add an external drive so that it functions just like the internal drive on the iMac?

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  I have already worked to free as much space on the HD as possible.  How do I add an external HD and have the iMac read it as though it was part of the internal HD.  I know about external HD for additional storage and I do have an external HD, but, it is so much easier to search the drive when it is internal than having to perform a search on the internal drive and then a search on the external drives.  And, it is easier to save files to an internal drive so that I don't have to decide which external drive to use to save files.  In other words, I want to add an external HD and have it function as though I had purchased a larger internal HD.

That is simply not possible. Every drive is a separate device. It cannot be used to extend an internal drive as though you had a seamlessly larger drive.
What you can do is to create a striped RAID array using the internal drive and an external drive. However, doing this will erase the internal drive and you will lose everything on the internal drive. Furthermore, installing Lion or Mountain Lion becomes a bit of a problem because you cannot create a Recovery HD on a RAID and this tends to make the installer choke. However, you can clone an existing Lion or Mountain Lion system to the RAID and designate the RAID as a startup volume.
I would not recommend the RAID solution, personally, but there are many who do. I prefer the basic solution of spending the money on a larger internal hard drive instead of an external hard drive.

For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs.  Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons. Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

No that will not work. However you might try installing 10.4 on an external HD and that may work. I would recommend using a FW 800 drive otherwise the performance will be pretty poor.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have a read of this thread. There are tools out there called Neck Tool and Neck Tool Pro but nowhere I've checked longer stocked them. If you can find them it will avoid a trip to your local Apple Authorised Service Provider.

  • IBook has no backlight even after LCD Panel and Inverter Board Replacement,

I just got hold of an iBook G3 800mhz that works excellently aside from the fact that it has no backlight. Usually, I can figure this stuff out pretty well, and I had some parts around, so I replaced the inverter board and LCD panel. Still no backlight. I reset the PMU and NVRAM, and of course turned up the brightness in System Preferences. I can't figure this out. What else could it be?

    Hi Guy,
As Rhonda suggests it's probably the inverter cable. I've repaired two recently both were broken at the hinge point where the cable is wrapped in this silver flex tape. One was the red wire, the other I forget. I diagnosed this by pushing the wires together at the hinge. Once I found the broken one and isolated the point that it was broken I soldered it together and used shrink tube to repair it.

  • I have a 24" early 2008 iMac. Can i upgrade the Logic Board?

For some reason only Steve jobs will know this iMac only was able to have a maximum 4 Gb Ram and 512 Mb graphics.
To buy a new one with 32 Gb RAM and 2 GB graphics would cost AU$3,000.00.
Therefore I was wanting to know if you could just drop in a new Logic Board with 32Gb RAM and 2 Gb graphics into the old machine?

iMacs are Not like PC's, which are generic and have commonly interchangeable parts.  They are also prone to all sorts of driver conflicts between different versions of hardware that can be installed.  Apple avoided all these conflict frustrations by building each model of Mac to a specific, tightly controlled standard "that just works right out of the box".  But they are Not upgradeable after purchase except for RAM Upgrades and Hard Drive replacement.  That's the tradeoff between getting a PC and getting a Mac.
    Hope this helps

  • Problem with display, sound...logic board?

    Hello,
I hope someone can help me with the issue I am facing.  I am using an early 2008 Macbook Pro laptop and just recently I noticed an obvious ongoing sound that I can actually only explain it by inserting a recording of it but I am not sure if I am able to do that in here. Then all of a sudden the cursor became like this (instead of the usual arrow):
    http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/ff/76/08/ff7608f6300b109e69f992f699809c4a .jpg
and became unresponsive to whatever I clicked on...
Also the keys didn't work so I wasn't able to do any shortcuts..
I tried closing the shell and reopening it but this time, the display's brightness became dark but I could still see what was open when I put a flashlight at the display (it was at 0 brightness)
I had no choice but to shut it down by pressing the on/off button and when it shut down, the clicking sound didn't come on like it always did before, but it was a soft shutdown.
After I turned it on, the light on the front bottom turned on but for a few seconds only. Now it's not on at all (not blinking like it used to)
By the way, I got my logic board replaced by paing $310 due to failure last summer so I am just really worried it may be the samething??  This is ridiculous if that's the case because I have no warranty and it's not even a year old!

I have the exact same problem on the exact same model. Got the problem after ~2.5 years of  purchase of the laptop. The service center guys couldn't find a new motherboard here in India, so they imported a similar on of Compaq brand with a different graphic chip on it (ATI Radeon HD6300M) after a month or so. But I'm facing the issues again after 6 months and I'm out of my extended warranty now.
What did you do to fix the problem?

  • IMac G5 won't start up - logic board or power supply?

My oldest son killed my iMac G5. Apparently he'd taken to sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night and watching videos on YouTube. One night, during his viewing session, the iMac threw up a kernel panic and the fan came on. My son tried to turn off the iMac but couldn't find the switch. So *he went to bed and left the iMac with the fan on full-blast.* When I came downstairs to go to work, 6 hours later, I turned off the machine, waited for a minute or so, and then attempted to turn it on.
The iMac is stone dead. Will not turn on.
I'm deathly afraid the logic board is cooked. Those things are damned expensive. I held off on doing anything for a while, but then I was talking offhand with a Genius at a local Apple store. He said it might be as simple as a power supply. Which would be great - $125 is a lot cheaper than $800, and I could do this repair myself. But I don't want to sink $125 into the machine unless I have a pretty good idea that this will, in fact, fix it.
Anyone else had this problem? Did it turn out to be the logic board, or the power supply, or something else entirely?

First off, the kid is grounded - second, which model do you have? Have you tried resetting the SMU? Resetting the SMU can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so on. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues even after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMU. To reset the SMU on one of these iMacs:
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Let us know if this helps,

  • Hi i have iMac G5 Power PC with dead logic board, when i turn it on screen is dead. Is it possible to recover data off it by hooking up via firewire to my newer G5 3.06Ghz with IntelCore

Kia ora, hi i have an older (2003 or 4) iMac G5 Power PC 2GHZ - when i turn it on the screen stays dead but the light below screen comes on & i can hear fan (after a few mins on the fan gets noisy).I think the logic board may be dead & can not afford new one & I would like to recover some files & stuff from it and have heard you can recover stuff using a firewire cable so i got cable (firewire 400 to 800) but i am unsure how exactly to do it.
Can anyone out there please explain how i might do it
    Thankyou very much
ps my first post on mac forums so hope i got it right

You can remove the hard drive from the iMac and put it in an external enclosure.  You could try using Target Disk Mode to transfer data.  Click on the blue link to get the instructions on how to transfer the data.

  • IMac 21.5 diagnosed with bad logic board

    mid-2011 21.5" iMac with i7, 2TB HD, 12GB RAM Yosemite 10.10.2
Hey everyone an Apple Tech here in Montana just diagnosed my iMac has having a bad circuit on the logic board which is causing the hard drive fan to lose power and not spin properly. This then causes heat sink errors and kernel panics which shut my computer down. I ran Apple hardware test on my own and came up with errors indicating problems with the hard drive fan and the fan sensors. The kernel panics I experienced always happened when I was using Lightroom or Aperture but never happen any other time. He also indicated there may be some corrupt data on the hard drive. Cost of repairs = $1000 for new logic board and hard drive. I asked about using 3rd party software to control the hard drive fan but the tech told me because it couldn't get power from the logic board that wouldn't work. Does this sound like a correct diagnoses? They were real eager to sell me a new iMac so I am not sure I trust the tech. Any 2nd opinions would be very helpful. Please let me know if I need to post more in depth info. Thanks!
    michelle

I understand your position and frustration, however IMHO the alternatives presented are the most viable. AFAIK your experience has been the exception rather than the rule. Given the alternatives (Dell, HP, Lenovo) I would choose an Apple every time. However in order to keep your peace of mind if you do choose to replace it (I would) with another iMac this time get AppleCare to protect your investment. If cost is an issue, I would strongly recommend visiting Apple's online refurbished store, those machines are discounted and come with the same warranty as a new machine, you can also add AppleCare and they are virtually identical to a new machine. If you don't find the configuration you want continue checking because inventory changes very quickly. In the US the link to the refurbished store is:

  • IMac intel core 2 due possible logic board failure how much to repair? 3 beeps problem

    Hi guys,
I have an iMac intel core 2 duo. I have the 3 beeps problem. iMac won't start up. I push power button, hear start up sound but screen stays grey & beeps, Apple logo doesn't even appear. I took out ram & memory to clean because it was very dusty down there. Still not working. If it happens to be a logic board problem, how much am I looking at to get it repaired? Or am I better off purchasing a new computer?
Or if I had to buy new ram & or memory how much would that cost?

Three beeps indicates a RAM problem.
I would try cleaning the Ram slots with a little alcohol on a Q-tip to make sure that all the dust is gone. Then reinstall the RAM modules pressing real hard on each module with both thumbs to making sure that they are firmly seated in the slots.

  • Early 2009 24" iMac CONTINUALLY crashes...

The system freezes and/or restarts at least once a day as well (usually more like 3-10x), seems to be worst in Safari, but also happens on waking from sleep and anything that is graphic-related (I almost typed graphic-heavy, but even small graphic files/sites/apps that have previously not posed any problem suddenly are), or now also video--whether it is flash/html5 viewed directly online or video files played from the hard drive. Any ONE of these things is enough to either slow the system to a crawl (like a 2-page InDesign document or loading FaceBook timeline--small things that should not be problem weighing the system down) or causing automatic restart or system-wide freeze for which the only solution is to hold the power button and do a hard reboot.
While there were issues before installing Mountain Lion (a clean install, btw, specifically to try to eradicate this problem), it seems no better and progressively worse since the upgrade.
Besides the clean install, here's what I've tried:
    -MacKeeper clean
    -PRAM reset
-freeing up hard disk space (there is 275GB free on a 640 drive)
    -reboot in safe mode
-shut down and unplug all peripherals and power, reboot
-using fewer programs (I work in graphic design, so I almost ALWAYS need Safari, Mail, InDesign, and usually Photoshop open. A lot, I know, but they aren't large files, and it's an almighty MAC after all, it should be fine--and forget about iTunes or iPhoto, opening them almost always causes a crash too... so no music while I work, at least not from iTunes)
Apple care ran out on this machine nearly a year ago, but really, these things should be more robust than a 4-year use-life...
I am not a computer tech, nor do I have the time or interest to pick apart panic logs to figure out what it all means. I just want it to work. Wasn't that Apple's motto for a while, "It just works"? Hmmm... not right. I should not have to either learn how to be a Genius or haul my 24" iMac to the nearest retail store AND pay for the repairs (if any) on a machine that is only 3.5 years old. That's ridiculous. That can't be my only 2 choices.
Anyway, here are 2 of the crash logs, one from today, and one from a couple days ago:
Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can pick them apart and find the possible cause(s)

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    It's a
2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I'll get more RAM, I'm sure it'll help... crashed again a couple times today before I could look for those processes (again, just Safari and Mail open)
Can't find the processes you mentioned earlier, I'm not sure where to search... spotlight is useless, and user files aren't showing anything so far...
If it helps, here's the latest crash report:

  • Early 2009, 24" iMac: What are normal operating temps?

My iMac overheats and automatically shuts down frequently.  Sometimes, just watching a movie on Quicktime causes the CPU to top 80C and cause a shutdown.  Fans never run faster than 3500-3600rpm.
Another thing that I noticed, is that the hiutil process runs twice a day using 100% of my processor, and always causes an overheat and shurtdown.
Can anyone direct me to normal operating temps for this model iMac, or advise what may be worng?
This sreenshot displays temps (Celcius) with only Safari running.  With uTorrent running (not actually feeding peers), and Quicktime, I get an overheat.
    TEMPS                                   FANS
HD Macintosh   54                Optical drive   801rpm
    CPU                    55               Hard Drive      1599rpm
CPU Heatsink   51               CPU Fan          3580rpm
    Ambient              39
    CPU Diode        72
    CPU Heatsink   60
    HD Bay               54
    Mem Controller  57
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256 MB
    Running Mountain Lion 10.8.

Your temps are somewhat high, but still within acceptable levels.
I would be more comfortable seeing many of the temps in the 40 degree Celsius range.
Your CPU temps are on the high side and probably why your CPU fans are running high.
When was the last time you clear out any of the dust, lint and fine dirt particles from your iMac.
IF you've never done this, you need to completely unplug your iMac, find a heavy blanket or towel to lay your iMac, face down on the soft material. Using a special electronics vacuum, a portable, plug in vacuum or standardnhiuse vacuum with hose and attchments, using either the bare hose end or crvice tool, carefully and slowly vacuum all air intake and exhaust vents, openings and all of the ports to get rid of as much fine dust, dirt and lint as possible.
Do not use a vacuum attachment with brushes. This could cause a problem with random static charges.
Once this is done, re-setup your iMac, plug all your peripherals in and then do an SMC reset by plugging in your iMac to power. Wait 5 seconds, then power up your iMac.
Then report back here with any changes in temps.
