Easiest way to identify/delete/prevent duplicate documents

I don't suppose that the text column (e.g. CLOB) is something that I can use the usual trick to delete duplicates with, is it? I would think rather than compare the actual text column, I'd need to calculate a checksum or something for each document and then delete rows with duplicate checksums. Or is there a better way? I'm trying to prevent, for example, a news article getting inserted 10 times because it's a UPI story that was carried by 10 different sites.
Thanks.

Your idea of a checksum is a good one. But I'd compute the checksum, and make it a unique constraint, which would PREVENT duplicates from being inserted. It's usually better to prevent them than to clean them up later.

  • HT2905 Is there a way to automatically delete exact duplicates in iTunes 11

Has anyone found a way to automatically delete Exact Duplicates from iTunes 11.  As I read the instructions, it can only be done by comparing the songs with the same title, making sure that it is the same album, etc.  Then I have been going through the duplicates and pressing CTRL in Windows to select the next duplicate song to delete.  I have a very large library and this is going to take hours.
I guess I didn't get the instructions correctly when I backed up my Library to move from an old laptop to a new one.  I am going to have to go back and read those again because this brand new HP is having problems like the past few that I have received from HP.  I will never recommend an HP Product, I can tell you that.
Thanks to all for reading this and I hope someone has an answer to automate it.

When deduping use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

I have many duplicate songs in my iTunes.  Is there a way to quickly delete all duplicates without having to manually delete all of them?

How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2905
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/dupin.php (commercial)
post by turingtest2 - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3555601 - different types of duplicates and techniques
http://www.araxis.com/find-duplicate-files (commercial, free trial) - finds duplicate files on computer, not specifically iTunes
I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes.  It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

  • Easiest way to get rid of duplicates & make sure none of them are !

Ok I have some duplicates through out iTunes.
Whats the easiest way to get rid of all of the duplicates?
I also want to make sure there are no ! in my iTunes, so how do I make sure if there are two files I am deleting the ! if there happens to be one & not the actual full file?
I may have a mixture of legit duplicates & some duplicates with just the ! associated with the 2nd file.

The second part of the question is best tackled first...
    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
Once you've got rid of any redundant ! entries (and recovered any "lost" files) then you can either remove duplicates manually using the *Show Duplicates* feature and removing all but one of each repeated track, or alternatively look for a tool to to this automatically. Teridon's itunesremoveduplicates is one, but I can't say I've tested it personally and from the decription might only remove multiple entries to the same physical file. I'm sure there are others out there...

  • Easiest way to find and remove duplicate files?

My wife is a photographer and she's terrible at file management. Consequently she has duplicate versions of images stashed all over her almost full hard drive. What is the easiest waty to find duplicates of files so that I can get rid of them? Any freeware out there that does something like that? This would be for her Intel-based macbook pro running Tiger.

Having spent several hours a few days ago organizing files, I was intrigued by your question.
I found Singular which is appears to be freeware, for at least the time being. There's a link on the registration page that will register the application for you — I assume Singular has to be running for that to work, but that's just a guess.
    http://www.emeraldion.it/software/macosx/singular.html
After you run Singular and drop files/folders on it, you can double click a duplicate entry and both versions are displayed.
    Good luck!

  • Best way to automatically delete multiple duplicate contacts?

I had Mobile Me go nuts on me a few weeks ago and took my 1,000+ contacts and duplicated them with every sync up to 16,400 before I caught it and shut it down.
This happened to my iCal appointments as well, but there is a simple application out there that allows duplicate entries to be automatically deleted.
Anyone know how to do this with AddressBook? I really don't have time to go through 16,400 entries and confirm each one before deleting them!!

Best is to not get them - how did you end up with duplicates?
A good solution is Duplicate annilator

  • What is the easiest way to permanently delete tabs so that they don't come back

No matter what I do I can't permanently delete tabs. I will close them all and the next time I open Firefox they are still there.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
It is also possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

Wait!  There's more.  As the added super bonus, if you have LV9 or later you can use Quick Drop, Ctrl-space Ctrl-t will move all of the control labels to the left and indicator labels to the right of the terminals, where they belong.
Wow that's cool but it seems to work only if the terminal and labels are outside a structure, bug? (using LV2009)

  • What's the easiest way to back up and restore my hard drive to a new HD

I'm going to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one on my MacBook. I have an external backup drive. What is the easiest way to save all my data (documents, emails, etc) and applications and restore them to the new hard drive in my MacBook? I have Leopard OS.
I've read on the forum everything from using Time Machine to the Disk Utility. I have been backing up everything to my external HD using Time Machine.
Can you point me to a step by step process.

I don't use TM, so here's my method that I've used many times for the same thing you are doing.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Now, boot from the clone to be sure it works correctly by opening Startup Disk, selecting the external volume, then clicking the Restart button. If all is well the computer will boot from the external drive. Now shut down the computer and disconnect the external drive. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery. Install the new hard drive. Once you've completed the installation connect the external drive and restart the computer.
    Now do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but recommended for a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting is completed use DU to clone the external drive's system back to the new internal drive. The external drive becomes the Source and the internal drive will be the Destination.
