Edit MP3s in iTunes

Is there a way to edit MP3s in iTunes? For instance, if I have a 1 hour file I want to split into 3 20 minute files? I know I can do it by changing the "Start Time" and "End Time", but that requires duplicating the file and any change you make to one copy is made on another so I cannot have 3 different start/end times. Plus, the file size is still 100% of original.
Also, are there any fade-in, fade-out effects you can add? Any suggestions?

I am sure there are plenty of audio editing software titles out there; I actually use GarageBand which came with my computer. I don't know how computer saavy you are, but it didn't take long to learn the program using common sense and the help screens. It is very memory intensive, though - converting to aiff. then when you export to iTunes it goes in as aiff, but you can always convert back to mp3 or whatever and delete the aiff. And you have to re-enter all the song info. Now that I think about it.... it IS a lot of work, but you can do so much and you probably already have the GarageBand for free.

  • How to export MP3 from iTunes to sD card

My car radio has an sD slot and can play MP3 files. How do I export from iTunes to an sD card in MP3 format?
    Thanks,
    John

Insert the card into a card reader and connect it to your Mac. Open iTunes and when the card is mounted on the desk top highlight the songs you want and drag them from the iTunes to the card icon.
If the songs in iTunes aren't in MP3 Format you'll need to convert them before dragging them to your card. You can use iTunes to convert any copy protection free songs in your library another format. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. If you are using iTunes 8 go to Edit>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings,, Change your Import format to MP3 Encoder for example and choose the Setting or "bit rate" you want. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create MP3 version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
One exception to this are standard copy protected songs (if you haven't upgraded to iTunes Plus versions) purchased from the iTunes Music Store which can't be directly converted due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection. However you can burn these to an Audio CD which will work like any regular CD.

  • Editing MP3s

I have an MP3 file I would like to cut a portion off the front of. I am familiar with using Audacity, but after I edit the file and export to a new MP3, it usually is between 2 to 3 times as large a file as the original. Does iTunes have any plug-ins for editing songs? If not, is there any free software out there with good compression settings?

I believe Audacity has to decode an mp3 to wav before it can be edited, which is not the best option for editing mp3s. In iTunes, though, you can set custom stop and start times for songs (right-click, Get Info, Options). If you actually want to edit the mp3, mp3DirectCut will do it without having to decompress to wav first.

  • How to convert AAC to MP3 in iTunes

I sent a friend of mine a song in the AAC format; I had thought that format was universally acceptable. Unfortunately, my friend said that she couldn't open the file. I then thought of converting the file to the MP3 format, because I know she can read that. This gets to my question: How do you do it? When I highlighted the song and clicked on Advanced, the only option was to convert to AAC. That's when I decided to come here. Is there a way to convert AAC to MP3 with iTunes? Also, how widespread is the acceptance of AAC?

You got the process correct, it
is just that iTunes only offers you the option to
convert to whatever your preferences are currently
    set to for importing.
So go to preferences, importing, set it to MP3. then
go to your song and you can now use the "Convert
to..." option which should show MP3. Once done, go
back to preferences and switch back to AAC if that is
what you normally want to use.

That was fast. Anyway, it worked. Thanks for your help. Now, all I have to do is to work-out what combination of factors I should use to obtain the smallest possible MP3 file while maintaining decent quality. It's an individual decision. What would be okay for me, might be intolerable to others, but I want to keep all sound files less than 1 MB. Make that, "all sound files that I send". I hope that doesn't mean that I will have to keep duplicate files. We'll just have to see. Anyway, thanks again.

  • Editing Tags in itunes - does tag info stay with file?

I have a question about editing tags in itunes, hopefully I can explain myself clearly enough here...
I have a very large music collection...almost 10,000 files now, and have spent alot of time editing the tags, renaming mispelled artists and song names etc...my question is, when that tag is edited, will all that tag info remain intact when I copy the actual mp3's to another computer? I want to back all the music up to my laptop, which is running same version of itunes, but I don't want to have to start over again with editing the tags. When I initially put the files on my computer the tags were really messed.
    Thanks for any info.

Here is the last list I've had of attributes and were they reside:
For M4A and MP3 files... (WAV files do not have tags)
These are only in the iTunes Library files (ITL & XML):
    -- Playlists
    -- Ratings
    -- Play Count
    -- Last Played
    -- Date Added
    -- Date Modified
    -- Equalizer
    -- Volume Adjustment
These are stored in the music file itself:
    -- Artist
    -- Album
    -- Song Title
    -- Year
    -- Comments
    -- Compilation tag
    -- Lyrics
    -- Genre
    -- Grouping
-- Volume Adjustment (a special iTunes only tag in the file - non-standard)
    -- Composer
-- Bit Rate (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
    -- BPM
-- Kind (not a tag - inherent to the file itself)
-- Album Art (only stored in the file - not copied to the iTunes Library ITL or XML files)
    Best of Luck

  • Add mp3 to iTunes, delete file from Downloads, add Grouping?

Can anyone help me make an Applescript (or it may need to be two) that can be used as a folder action to watch the Downloads folder and:
    1) Open .mp3s in iTunes and set track Grouping ID3 field to 'singles', then delete original .mp3s.
    2) Open .zip and .rar archives, parse then unarchived folder for .mp3 files, add them to iTunes, set track Grouping ID3 field to 'albums', then delete original folder of .mp3s.
2a) Bonus points if the script adds the .mp3s to itunes in descending order based on file name track numbers (track 10, track 9, track 8...).

  • Add mp3 to iTunes, delete file from Downloads, add Comment?

I'm trying to make a folder action that will:
    - Watch my 'Downloads' folder for downloaded .mp3 files.
    - Add those .mp3 files to iTunes, letting iTunes copy to music folder.
    - Delete the original file from the 'Downloads' folder.
    - In iTunes, append '#single' to the Comment field of added .mp3.
So far I have the first three working, but cannot get it to append the #single part to the Comment field, here's what I have:
    property myFiletypes : {".mp3"}
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    set myFinderItems to added_items
    tell application "System Events"
set allItems to every item of myFinderItems
    end tell
repeat with i from 1 to the count of allItems
    try
    -- get an item
set myFinderItem to (item i of allItems as alias)
-- check if it is a folder
tell application "Finder" to set myItemIsFolder to (kind of myFinderItem = "Folder")
    -- if it isn't a folder...
    if myItemIsFolder is false then
-- see if the file has the right extension
tell application "Finder" to set myItemExtension to "." & (name extension of myFinderItem) as string
    if myFiletypes contains myItemExtension then
set mySongName to myFinderItem as alias
    -- add track to iTunes
    tell application "iTunes"
    add mySongName
    end tell
tell application "Finder" to delete file myFinderItem
    end if
    end if
    on error
    display dialog "Error"
    end try
    end repeat
    end adding folder items to

Better yet, an Applescript that can be used as a folder action to watch the Downloads folder and:
    1) Open .mp3s in iTunes and append #single to track Comments, then delete original .mp3s.
    2) Open .zip and .rar archives, parse then unarchived folder for .mp3 files, add them to iTunes, append #album to track Comments, then delete original folder of .mp3s.
2a) Bonus points if the script adds the .mp3s to itunes in descending order based on file name track numbers (track 10, track 9, track 8...).

  • Can't convert to MP3 with itunes music

I have downloaded some music but I am not able to convert my purchased itunes songs to MP3 so that I can put it into a personal movie maker project that I am doing. When I try to convert the song, I get this message: "Amazing Grace" could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats. How can I get this into my Windows Movie Maker?

    Di5,
The protected tracks sold in the iTunes Music Store are not mp3s, and under the terms of the ITMS license cannot be legally converted to mp3 format. iTunes does not provide a way to do the conversion, and if you are a rocket scientist and figure it out, you would not (as Paul correctly notes) be allowed to discuss it in this Forum.
To get mp3s, you need to look elsewhere, such as (1) rip from CD (2) purchase from an online store that sells songs in mp3 format, such as audiolunchbox.com, or (3) purchase from an online store that allows format conversion. On the last item, puretracks.com states that "When Puretracks files are burned to a CD through Windows Media Player 9, these music CDs will be recognized and can be ripped by iTunes."
    Hope this helps.

We understand that documents are siloed with the apps in the iOS 5 file directory. However, if I want to link a PDF in iBooks to an mp3 in iTunes is that possible?

    doubt it
seen pdfs in genral which have links to other parts of the document

and I speak about general not ios which is much more restricted then a pc
so I would not hold my breath for that feature being supported or introduced

  • How do i convert a voice memo into MP3 with itunes 12?

I need to convert a voice memo into MP3 with itunes 12.

Today, I emailed myself an .m4a voice recording from an Android smartphone that had created that sound file minutes earlier.
After opening that email message, I saved the .m4a sound file (a whopping 352 KB) to my Mac (iMac 21.5 inch running Yosemite).
Clicking on the sound file's icon launched iTunes (version 12.0.1.26), which then did nothing no matter what I tried.
However, when I selected the file on the desktop and navigated to the Finder/File/Open With dropdown window, a dialog box opened with alternative applications to use for opening the sound file. The available applications shown were VLC, QuickTime Player, Flip Player, and RealPlayer. I was pleased to find that VLC, QuickTime, Flip Player, and RealPlayer each opened and played the file straightforwardly and flawlessly.
Apparently, Flip Player Pro (which I do not own) has a "save as" feature that might help you convert the file to the format you desire.

  • Can't drag anymore mp3 into ITunes version 11.1.138

I now have ITunes Version 11.1.138 but I used to have an earlier version 8 before. At that time I was able to simply drag an mp3 (from whichever pc file)  into  Itunes which also inserted the same mp3 into my 160G Classic IPod. Now with ITunes Version 11, it no longer works. Now I have to click in ITunes File tab>Add File to Library = Only then will the mp3 go to Itunes and IPod.
But that's not the end of it.
I now have an additional file in Computer/Local Disk C/ Ipod Music  with so far 46.3GB which I don't need since the mp3 are already in other Mp3 files.
Also this new IPod music file creates a new sub-file every time I insert an mp3 in ITunes & IPod.  The worst thing is the sub-file is identified by a title like F00 - F01-F02  and on and on. Each of these sub-files  (when I open them) show the track simply by 4 letters like CHOO or JDWT as example; thus no title or description like I have for all my mp3s  ie., ''Gary Peacock - Tales of Another - 01 - Vignette''
In other words I can't even Identify them anymore.
Am I doing something wrong or is this the new M.O. ?
Help please and Happy Holidays to All with Yours.

    Hello Ed,
Re:  your 2nd question:  If you mean taking the Gary Peacock mp3 and copy it to the Library Itune Folder = no problem. The full mp3 listing is properly shown.
But if you mean going to ITunes and ''Automatically Add to ITunes'' folder I can't see any such tab in ITunes tabs or sub-tabs.
Re: your 1st comment: Not seeing that phenomenon...... quite strange on my part. it does not insert by dragging.
I even tried to go back to an earlier version installation (after uninstalling version 11 and cleaning  registry) and I'm getting a message that it's now impossible to go back to an earlier version. Can you beleive this.
Yours truly, an old 78yrs old geezer with puter experience is bewildered for a first time and embarrassed.
I'm tempted to delete that Ipod Music file of some 46.3GB but am afraid to loose all music in my Ipod which is not connected at the moment.
I have now connected my IPod to my puter and tried dragging an mp3 file to Itunes it still does not work.
