Edit photo in album without changing original

In iPhoto '08, it seems like any photo that I edit in an album also edits the original. This is why I stopped using one of the earlier versions of iPhoto. It seemed like this was fixed in iPhoto 6, so that iPhoto would automatically preserve the original and save the changes in a copy of the photo.
Is there a setting that can be changed in the preferences somewhere? If I'm working on two albums (i.e. one for each child) I often want to use the same photos but crop them differently, and I'd rather not have to remember to make a copy any time I do so.

No, all occurrences of a photo in the library other than in an event is just an alias of the original or the edited version. Change one and you change all.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Editing Photos in Albums

In iPhoto 08 when I edit a photograph in an album the changes I make a reflected back in the Events. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening. Otherwise I have to keep resetting the photos in the Events section. Thanks alot.

    Not without duplicating the files.
Photos in albums reference photos in the Library. It's the same pic you see, so when edited in one place it's edited in every place. If you want a separate version for an Album then you'll need to duplicate the photo first (Photos -> Duplicate)

  • Cropping photo in album A changes same photo in album B  too.

I have Album A, with photos cropped square. I copied the same photos to Album B and I want to crop those lets say 'postcard' format. I need to work with these 2 formats for my business. Now all photos in Album A also change to 'postcard' size. How do I keep 2 different sizes, in 2 different albums.

Albums are logical entities that are simply points to the photo in the library - any change made to that photo anyplace will be reflected in all other places - you can make changes and then revert to original restoring the original photo after you have used the changed photo - or you can duplicate the photos and change one of the copies leaving the other one alone

  • Copy clip.  Edit copied clip w/o changing original

This should be easy....but I'm having trouble.
I want to take a clip (in this case a title) and copy it. I can do this part.
I then want to change the copied clip (ie change text) but without changing the original clip. Everytime I change the copied clip, the original changes also.
    Thanks

It sounds like you're talking about making a duplicate of a title.
To do this, right-click on the title in the project media panel and select duplicate. Then you can change each title separately.
If you use copy and paste, you merely clone the title and, if you change one, both change.

  • Is there a way to save photos from lightroom without the original file?

I recently imported photos into lightroom, but I failed to save the original files on my computer and they are deleted from my card.  The pictures are still showing up in lightroom.  Is there a way to save them from lightroom without the original file?

Your images aren't - and never were - in Lightroom, they're just referenced in Lightroom's database.
Lightroom does generate jpeg previews of the originals though, and you can export those using Rob Cole's Preview Exporter plugin: robcole.com - PreviewExporter.
To be clear though, these aren't the originals.

  • Editing photo but still keeping the original

I am new to iphoto and I hope this is not a dumb question. But how do I edit a photo for a project, but till want to retain the original photo? I want to convert several photos to black and white for a project, but I want to also save the original in it's color format. Am I missing something?

    Simply, it does it automatically.
When you edit a shot iphoto applies those edits to a copy of the original. If you want to revert then check out the Photos -> Revert to Original command.
If you want the Original side by side in the iPhoto Window then duplicate the photo first and then edit the duplicate. This will give you your Original and an edited version in the iPhoto Window.
If having versions is a big part of your work then check out Aperture, where this is easier to do.

  • Can you change the year of all songs in an album without changing the year of the album?

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if it is possible to change the year of all the songs within an album while keeping the year of the album. This is particularly relevant in 'Compliation' or 'Best of' albums, where all the years the songs were produced is different o the year the album was produced.
Foe example, The Beatles' best of album '1' was created in 2000, but all of the songs were from 1963-70. In iTunes, the album is listed as being released in the year 2000, which is correct, but all of the songs are listed as being released in 2000, too, which is incorrect. However, when I change all of the individual songs to their correct year in which they were created, the year of the album also changes to that of the first song on that album. In short, either the album year is correct but all the song years are incorrect OR the album year is wrong but all the song years are right.
Does anyone kinow if there is anyway to change this or get around this?
    Many thanks!

Do you have any idea whether or not Apple are seeking to do anything about it in any upcoming updates?
None at all. If you'd like them to consider it you'll need to use the feedback link I gave above.
A long standing bug bear for some is not being able to correctly sort two albums released in the same year by the same band. Having both copyright date and release date would (if implemented properly) give the option to sort, or filter tracks on either date as required.
iTunes is a database of tracks. Albums don't really exist separately. There are a few collective properties. Year can have a separate value in each track but obviously only one value can (or at least should) be used when sorting as Album by Artist/Year. If you change the album rating of a single track in iTunes (which can be done with a script) iTunes automatically updates all the others to match.

  • Is it  possible to change the name of a photo in one album without changing the name in other albums?

I use the photos in events to create more than one album and I want to use a unique name in each album. When I change the name in one album, all instances of the photo also change.

Correct. Albums just reference the photos in an Event - it's why a pic can be in 50 albums and use no extra disk space. So, change one and you change all. The alternative is to duplicate the pic in the Event.

  • Editing photos in album for book and freeze

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to 5.0.4 and am using Panther 10.3.9 at the moment. I am trying to make a book with a library of 700 photos. I am first creating an album and editing it down to about 30 photos. Now I am editing the individual photos, crop, enhance, sharpen, etc.
I have had a crash during the saving photo. This was happening all the time (crashes, SPWOD, freeze) when I did a large book with 5.0.2 and had a 2000+ photo library. I thought I had addressed the problem by upgrading, using iphoto buddy, keeping the library small.
Do other people have no problem editing everything right in iPhoto, or should I do that in Photoshop and import the pics. I prefer to do it right in iPhoto, but not if it freezes all the time!
    Thanks!

First repair disk permissions with Disk Utility and then manually set the permissions on your iPhoto Library folder as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
One way to give it another go is to export those 30 photos to a folder on the desktop, create a new library and import them into it. Now you have a minimum sized library and can try to shake down the problem. I make a new library for each book I've created. Makes things smaller and faster. I use iPhoto Buddy to easily move between libraries.
It's my opinion that it's best to use Photoshop for your editing. That's also what I do. But I do it from within iPhoto by setting PS as my editor of choice in iPhoto's General preference window under "Double-click: Open photo in:"
The only caveat is doing it that way is if you must keep the file name and extension the same. If you create a layered file that necessitates an extension change to .psd then you must save to the desktop and import as a new file. Simple edits you save as usual.
Have you tried deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist? It may help fix the crashing problem. Another potential fix would be to rebuild the library, after making a backup copy of the iPhoto Library folder beforehand, selecting all option but the one regarding orphaned files.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Convert mpeg videos without changing original date

    Hi
I'm trying to convert my mpeg videos to mp4 or other, so as i can import them to iphoto and display them in a slideshow. i want to play the videos and photos (jpegs) in the sequence they have been taken, so i would need to keep the original date and time in the file or keep somewhere the shooting date and time and have iphoto play them in this order (not the file date and time order, which possibility, by the way, i haven't found).
I noticed that when i convert, not only the file date and time are changed to the present, but the original date and time too.
    Help is welcome.

Unlike photos movies do not have EXIF data to tell their dates, etc so the file date is used - I do not think that batch change date and time will fix this but it is worth a try - and try changing the date/time in the info window - but again I do not have great hope for that
Old Toad does a lot more with movies than I do - so he probably will have some ideas
You may have to do the slide show in something other than iPhoto - iMovie - Photo Presenter http://www.boinx.com/photopresenter/overview/ - etc

  • Edited photo when shared reverts to original

So I thought I'd give iPhoto a shot to use instead of Instagram and the likes since I've never used them and didn't want to use instagram now since FB owns your pictures once uploaded. Anywho, I edited the photo to my liking, I clicked on share and no matter which choice I select, it sends out the original (Twitter, FB, email, etc..) Anybody know why it does that? From everyting I've read when I edit and share it should send the edited one, or at least the one in front of me when I click share. Most recent iPhoto on iPhone 4.

So, all I do is start up iPhoto. I select a picture from my camera roll, I then select effects and add... lets just say a vintage one. I now looks "vintage" and how I want it, I then select share. At this point, no matter what I choose (email, facebook, twitter, etc.) it always shares the original and not the vintage one. Is there a way that I have to "apply" the effect other than choosing it? I even say "add to camera roll" for the edited one, and it just duplicates the original.

  • How can I change the pixel height and width of a photo in iPhoto without changing the dpi

I want to change the dimensions of a photo. Current dimensions are 480 pixels on each side. I want to make a copy that is 100 pixels on each side, but I want the dpi to stay the same. In iPhoto I tried exporting the copy using the new dimensions, but the result was a blurred image. Is there another way to do this?

to change the pixels crop to 100x100 and export with maximum dimension of 100 - see the user tip on exporting foo details on Export options - Exporting From iPhoto
As to DPI - digital photos have no DPI since DPI is Dots Per Inch and digital photos have no inches hence no DPI - when you print a photo then DPI is a mathematical calculation - dots divided by inches - it is not a setting
    Print a 480 pixel photos as a 1" square and the print it 480 DPI (480 / 1 = 480) and print the 100 pixel image as a 1" square it will be 100 DPI (100 / 1 = 100) - print a 480 pixel photo as a 4.8 inch square and it is 100 dpi (480 / 4.8 = 100) - just a calculation - not a setting

  • How to change field labels in CRM without changing original data structure

Hello, I wish I could change the label of the input-type fields that are visibile in the CRM Account search page.
The only way I have found so far is: go to the structure CRMT_BSP_SEAREQ_ACCOUNT
and change the short description of the component.
This is, anyway, very invasive, as I have to modify a SAP structure and I am asked an activation key.
I have gone through the PCUI but cannot find a way to change the labels, anybody has a hint?
At least, I would like to give the labels the same length so that the page is better organized, now all columns have different widths...

Sorry, I had not seen this previous answer

  • I need to delete photos from iPad without accessing original computer

I have an iPad 4 and an iPhone 4S. I need to delete photos on my iPad which were sync'd several years ago with an old Mac and I can no longer sync it.  How do I make this happen?  The photos I need to delete will not let me delete them.   So frustrating!

Do you have a Mac you can connect the iPad to?  If so then launch Image Capture, connect the iPad and try to delete those photos with IC.

  • Original photo and edited photo are no longer stacked and appear now as two photo

I have a problem that my edited photos are separated from the original photo so I have two photos side  by side.  I am afraid to delete the original photo for fear of not being able to open the edited photo but I really do not want to have two photos, one edited photo that looks nice and one unedited photo that is not so nice next to each other in my album.  How can I restack these?  Also if I bring over the edited photo into Revel will it have the information needed to display the picture?
