Editing a Scanned Document

I was emailed a scanned document and am having trouble trying to edit it in Preview. Do I need to download software to edit it, even if its not from a scanner attached to my computer? If I have to, are there any free applications or is Vuescan the only option? I doubt I would use it very often to justify buying it.
thanks.

To truly edit text in a scanned document requires using OCR software. VueScan is probably the least expensive alternative. To OCR a PDF image file you can try PDF Pen Pro - both at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

That's impossible. Scanned images are pixel data, not editbale text. You'd have to run it through some OCR process first like in Acrobat, but even then it may just end up being a collection of isolated text objects, not easily editable paragraph text....

  • Editting a scanned document

Hello everyone i am new to this forum.  But i am going crazy trying to figure out how to make changes to the text of a scanned document but not change the background picture.  is this possible with adobe acrobat? if not any suggestions?

Acrobat's OCR methods Formatted Text and Graphics (Acrobat 8) or Clear Scan (Acrobat 9) more readily lend themselves to editing.
With that said it is not always like falling off a log in the river.

  • How do i edit a scanned document on a Deskjet F4280?

All my scans end up in HP Photo and i cannot edit documents there. Can anyone tell me how to save my document scans so i can edit them?

There is a page with great information about how to perform scans with and without the HP software for the F4280. This page can be found here.
As to saving scans so that you can edit them. What type of scan are you doing? (picture or text document) What type of edits are you attempting?
What is the operating system of the computer connected to the F4280?

  • How do I edit my scanned documents?

I do not know what I am doing.
I have a new all in one printer, scanner, copier.
I want to be able to edit my text in a document that I have scanned.

Well, first thing we need to know in the format of the outcome of the scan. Knowing which programs you have for opening the resulting file, your OS and version, etc. would also be helpful. From your message above, I cannot even start guessing what you have done.

You probably need to use image editing software such as Photoshop or Fireworks since a scan commonly produces an image file.

  • How do I make a scanned document editable?

Is there an app (or program) already on my Mac that allows me to edit a scanned document, or to scan directly into Pages or Word For Mac?  I don't mind purchasing a program, if necessary, but it seems Mac has lots of functionalities built in... if you know where to find it.

You need OCR (optical character recognition) software.
It's not built in to OS X, so you'll have to search for a solution. There is an abundant selection in the App Store. Here is one and there are many others.
Readiris has been around for a very long time. I used it a while ago, but it's expensive, and there may be better alternatives today.
I have none in particular to recommend, so read the reviews and choose accordingly.

  • Scanned document to edit

I just purchased this product to be able to edit a scanned document. I assumed that editing means I can cut and paste portions of the document to a microsoft word document that I am working on. in this case the scanned document is a fax from an internet based fax provider. Please explain to me how I would do this.

Which Adobe Product have you purchased??

While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

Thanks for answering. The version is XI.0.10. I just did the update yesterday hoping that I could now properly edit a scanned pdf document. Yes, it's happening on most all scanned documents. I followed your steps & found the list of fonts used in the document & then attempted to edit. The same occurs. When I type in a correction, I get an error alert... "the original font (in this case Fd 5805) is not available or can't be used in editing. Acrobat is using the font Minion Pro in its place."
When I select the text & right click as you suggested, my only choices are cut, copy, delete or select all, no "edit text".
I have no other options to choose another font. Thanks for any help you can direct my way.

  • Mac os x 10.7.4 connected to a photosmart c309a. Scan documents to word and edit?

I have a mac os x 10.7.4 connected to a photosmart c309a.  I use the mac drivers to scan document.  Everything is updated and working fine.  However, I would like to scan a document, copy it to word, and edit.  How can I do this?

The OCR software does not necessarily need to integrate with the HP Photosmart driver.  You scan the document, save it as a JPG, TIFF, PDF or whatever and then run the OCR software against the scanned file.
I use Readiris with an HP AIO printer on Lion and it works just fine, using MS Word to edit the results.

how do i edit a scanned pdf document in word?

In order to edit a scanned PDF anywhere, you'll need to run Optical Character Recognition so it can covert the text from an image to actual text.
That would require Adobe Acrobat once the PDF is created. If you are using scanning software to create the PDF, that option may be in the software so you can OCR it as you create it.

  • How do I edit a scanned file converted to a word document?

How do you take a scanned document to a word document & then edit it?

Many scanners have the ability to save as PDF.  If you scan your document to a PDF file, you can then use the ExportPDF service to convert that file to a Word document.  The ExportPDF service will perform optical character recognition (OCR) on your document to try to identify the text as actual text instead of an image.  You should then be able to edit the file.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
