Editing Contrast / Brightness inside InDesign

In Quark you can go and edit any image by right clicking an image going to Picture Effects then Adjusments followed by "Brightness/Contrast" . I was wondering if it is possible to edit images on the fly like that in InDesign and if so how? Messing with the Opacity of the object seems to work a little bit but i'm sure that's not what you are suppost to do.

    Notice I changed the 3rd default value in eq2 from 0.0 to 0.1, this will appear as 10 in the equalizer.
    This 10% increase in brightness gave me a brightness, similar to watching the same video in VLC.

    since front row just hijacks dvd player and such you should be able to change it in dvd player's preferances. are the tv shows from the itunes music store?

  • Non-editable element in an InDesign document.

    Hello, all.
    I need to add a non editable element to my InDesign document. This element will be my copyright notice. Although I will be sharing this InDesign document with others and will allow them to modify or customize it to their needs I wish to make my copyright notice non-editable so users will not have the option to remove the notice.
    Is there a way to make an element non-editable in an InDesign document so users can modify anything they want but that one element ?

    In addition, as I explained on my previous e-mail, it should be difficult to implement such a feature considering Adobe currently offers something similar on its Acrobat application.
    My gut feeling here - not meaning to be offensive - is that you probably have no idea how hard or easy it is to lock something down. I am no developer, but I spend enough time working with devs to have a vague idea how hard it is to make something like what you're describing. And Bob is right about, defeating Acrobat security is trivial.
    It is not difficult but impossible to do what you ask for. All you can do is make it difficult to remove your copyright statement, and that difficulty varies according to the technical skills of the person(s) who wish to remove your copyright statement.. In your shoes, I'd just make it annoying to remove, and that would probably defeat 95% of the casual thieves who would file off the serial numbers and call your work their own. Heck, just locking it would defeat more than half of the casual uncredited reuse, if the frequency of posts here is to be believed. Put it behind a locked transparent frame on a locked layer and you've made it more difficult.
    I think that there may well be an untapped market for the feature you are describing, Joe - but if I were once again in your shoes, I'd be pitching it wherever Framemaker users hang out.

    Sometimes when I try to edit images from within InDesign Photoshop says it cannot open because of a problem. I noticed that it's not with every image. But I cannot see why. Some are my own images from iPhoto, some are from the morgue files. Anyone?

  • H.264 - flash video inside InDesign

    hi there,
    I'm using AME to convert movies for use in InDesign to create folio's for Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.
    I've also poted this in the AME forum but don't know if this is an InDesign issue or it has something to do with AME.
    Inside AME6 I found a setting for iPad 1080p 25fr and one for iPad 720p 25fr.
    But after using these settings, when imported inside InDesign the infopanel shows it as Flash H264 video
    Now, talking to tech support about troubles with the Adobe DPS folio, the support guy told me this is an error with the video.
    He told me the format has to be H264 and not Flash H264. But all video I convert with AME and the iPad settings has that 'format' inside InDesign.
    Don't know where InDesign is looking for that 'format' but I really want to figure out why some video's function well while others, converted with the same AME6 and the same settings, won't.
    Hope someone can help with this,

    I'm pretty positive that an MP4 file with H264 encoding is NOT a Flash format. It is supported in Flash Player but it is not a Flash format. Flash-specific formats would be F4V and FLV.

    It would be nice if Indesign could open PDF files.
    When will this happen (without a plugin)?
    Today I need to open the files in Illustrator. The customer prefers to use Indesign, so even though Indesign can export pdf documents I will have to tell the customer and the program can not open pdf files. This I find really weird.
    Hopefully opening and editing pdf files in Indesign will happen real soon.

    Paal, I'm sorry for that little out-lash. There is nothing wrong with inquiring the feasability of a new feature. The problem is that PDF has been an "output intended format" from the very beginning.
    An Illustrator file (from a fairly modern version) also is a PDF file, for all intents and purposes. You can rename an .AI file to .PDF and use it anywhere, with any software that supports PDF (so that's excepting Apple's Preview, probably ;-) ). Moreover, you can still open and edit this PDF with Illustrator and get all of your objects, symbols, layers, paragraph styles, and guides back!
    That's because in fact this file *contains* all this extra information in a data block marked "For Private Use Only". Other software, if adhering to Adobe's PDF specs, will simply ignore this (and thus my little jab at Apple's Preview). Does that mean you can edit such a PDF with *any* software? No -- the Illustrator data is "proprietary", and the details are not published to use by other software developers. Similarly, one could envisage InDesign to do the same. Yes, it would lead to *huge* files -- but hey, you would be able to open THAT file into InDesign and edit it. But not with any other software!
    The meta-problem is that an extremely large amount of this private data would be *extremely* dependant on the software that was used to create it with. What would an Illustrator file do with InDesign's GREP styles? What would InDesign do with Illlustrator's brush styles, or symbols? Illustrator allows slanted guides, InDesign does not.
    And let's not focus purely on a combo of ID and Illy; Photoshop *also* outputs PDFs, and its graphic data has yet another set of requirements.
    So all of Adobe's software would need to be able to parse *every others' data* to some degree. Well, it's still not "unconceivable" as all of this would need to be done in one office (note that in that single office there are still vast differences in something as straightforward as a User Interface across the CS suite). But there are lots of other software developers out there, and they *all* want to write out PDFs, all with their own internal data! (Think of the different requirements between an architectural app and one for graph plotting.)
    A *possible* solution would be to add "more" metadata to a PDF without crossing into the realm of "every single bit". Article tagging is an example of this -- it tells software that wants to know in which order *plain text* is to appear, and as such it serves as meta-data for plain text content. But the mind reels thinking of what more to add -- a list of used GREP styles per paragraph would probably be useless to anyone else.
    But such an idea will not solve the problem, as 1. this meta-data is optional (lazy programmers would be allowed to say "nothing to see here, move along"), and 2. this data would only get added to *newly created* files, and it would not retroactively make older PDFs editable ...

    What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
    Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.

    I want to simply use some slider to adjust the contrast, brightness, gamma or color balance in my MacBook Pro, but for some reason I'm unable to find it. All I can find is the calibration process, but when I calibrate it "correctly", the screen is a bit too dark so I just want to adjust the brightness/gamma manually AFTER the calibration. How? Where? Please don't tell me that it's one of the "Apple doesn't allow me to do this" things ;-)

    The only way I know how is though System Preferences > Displays
    For Brightness there is a slider in System Preferences > Displays > Display ( Tab )
    For Gamma and Contrast you have to use the Display Calibrator Assistant found in System Preferences > Displays > Color ( Tab ) > Calibrate...
    Although if you use Expert Mode there are more options.
    You can fine tune the Color Profile settings if you use Expert Mode. Then you just go through the prompts and adjust as you would like it.

    I haven’t been able to find any.
    Since the .m4v file type appears to prevent any video bought or rented from the iTunes Store from being played using any other program the lack of these picture controls - if indeed they are lacking - make it seriously deficient as a video player.

    I know that it’s possible to adjust the monitor’s performance via System Preferences but it is rather long-winded and I’d rather not alter the settings for the entire screen (and then have to change them all back once finished) when it’s only the video playback window that needs adjustment.
    Since iTunes provides various options using the Equalizer for adjusting sound playback it seems rather odd that they don’t have a similar panel for video.
    Regarding QuickTime.
    Apparently earlier versions (such as 7) had picture controls but the current version (10.4) does not.
    I assume Apple are phasing out QT whose development seems to have stopped - or rather gone backwards since it now lacks capabilities it once had - and intend in future to treat iTunes as their universal media player which no doubt makes sense from their point of view.
    I wasn’t aware of the .m4v file type when I made my first and probably last video purchase via iTunes yesterday and didn’t realise that it would restrict my options for playback so completely.
    The experience has really put me off buying any additional video from the iTunes Store.
    Back to DVDs.

    I've just update OS X - 10.9.5 and that has fixed the issue.
    The folio overlays tab was empty but it's fine now, sorry for the question earlier. I probably should have updated the OS first

    I'm working with Adobe Photoshop Elements version #10. 
    How can I adjust the contrast/brightness/adjust color etc. . .of just a PORTION of a picture, and not the entire picture?
    I've tried "defining" an area that I want to change by using a lasso tool, but when I custom draw an area of the picture, I don't see
    any option that lets me adjust the contrast/brightness etc....of that section.

    Once you select it, anything you do should apply only to the selected area, or you can create a new layer from the selection, too. So if you make a selection and apply levels, it should only change the selected area. The new layer gives you the option of going back later to change or delete your corrections.
    For what you want to do you can also use the smart brush, which lets you select and apply corrections in one go. Just sort through the smart tool's options in the options bar's  thumbnail's popout menu till you find what you want.

  • Contrast/Brightness App Setting Adjustments

    I am visually impaired, and use a screen magnifier (ZoomText) that is set to reverse the colors (white on black).  How can I lighten the tool bars and darken the fonts on the tool bars so that it is easier to manuver within the programs without having to turn on and off the settings in my ZoomText.
    I had found these settings options before for a couple of my apps from Creative Cloud.  But I just upgraded my RAM and swapped my HD to a SSD, so I had to reinstall the apps and unforuntately lost those special settings that I had set, and of course now I can't seem to find them again...??
    I am using Muse, Flash Pro, Illustrator, and Photoshop.  I design digital signage for my coffee shop, so any other apps that anyone might suggest to incorporate in my tool box would be greately appreciated.
    But as for now, just being able to lighten the contrast or brightness and darken the text in the apps in general would be a huge help.

  • Editing Form Fields inside Acrobat? (after using LiveCycle Designer)

    Say I downloaded a new PDF from the interwebs.
    I want to add some forms fields so I go to Forms ==> Add or Edit Fields... (inside Acrobat)
    Now Acrobat will detect possible places where to add the form fields. I make changes etc. Then I am  satisfied with my form fields.
    Now say I want to remove a particular object from the PDF, lets take an image as an example.
    So I fire up  LiveCycle Designer; File ==> New ==> Import a PDF document ==>  Create an Interactive Form with a Flowable Layout.
    I remove that pesky little object.
    In LiveCycle Designer, I save the file as PDF.
    I open up Acrobat. I realize I need to make some more changes to some of the Form  Fields.
    But now instead of "Add or Edit Fields..." option I get "Edit Form in  Designer..."
    I hate the GUI of LiveCycle Designer --- I had rather edit the form  fields from inside Acrobat, as it is easy and fast to change multiple  form fields in a few clicks.

    You know Acrobat detects Form Fields for you.
    But many times it makes mistakes, for example in the screenshot below it made the boxes that came with the PDF as text fields instead of check boxes.
    The thing is rather than me delete the (form) fields it detected, and start over by making new check boxes, I will not be able to place my new check box in exact locations as Acrobat has done.
    When I imported the fields that Acrobat made into LC (by saving the PDF in Acrobat and then opening it with LC) I get option to change the Object Type from Text Field to Check Box when I right click the object.
    Is there a similar way to change the Object Type from Text Field to Check Box inside Acrobat? Any suggestions?

    I would really like to do it inside Acrobat because then if I have to make some minor changes to some field properties, all my hard work which I did by filling the fields gets deleted, as I am forced to use LC. The text I add to the fields don't get deleted when I edit the field properties inside Acrobat. I don't know why LC decides to delete all the text which is filled out in the form fields even though the PDF is saved in Acrobat before being imported into LC?

  • How can I get back the "edit original" option in InDesign CS2?

    I am using InDesign CS2 version 4.0 on a new windows 7 pc.
    On my previous pc (windows xp) I could open an ID document, right click on an image, select "edit original" and it would open up in Photoshop for editing. Very handy.
    Now that option is just not there on the drop down. The pencil in the links menu and the option under the edit menu are both greyed out.I can't find any way of accessing the option which is really important for my workflow.
    Any help gratefully received.

    Opening the document on a different computer is a meaningless test for something like this.
    The link could well be present there and not on your computer.
    As for XP mode, the less I say about it the better.

    PDFs are not designed to be editable. Your engineers can make comments using Adobe Reader without any extra steps provided they use the highlight and sticky note comments. If you want them to have access to the full range of comment markup you will need to use Acrobat to apply extended rights to the file.
