Editing pages files in Linux
I have a bit of a problem.
I have several files as .pages documents and I need to edit these in Linux.
(Kubuntu 9.10, fully updated)
now I can save the .pages files as .odt and open them in OpenOffice.Org
but, I have some markup that open document text files don't support.
but that is kinda importaint markup.
is there a way to edit the files on Linux, or a other file type I can use that I can open in linux without losing markup?

How? Only .doc and .rtf and .pdf and .txt are available for me.

Can not edit Pages files in Dropbox in my iPad
In Dropbox, in my iPad I can open files created in Pages in my laptop, but can't edit these using the iPad. Is this normal, and if so is there a workaround?

NBKThere is no direct way to send files from Pages to Dropbox. Though what you can do is email the document to yourself, open your mail app and locate said email to yourself, tap to download the attachment, then tap and hold, select "open in..." and choose Dropbox. (note: for this to work the Dropbox app must be installed on your iPad)

I forgot to save the pages file, I do back up on time machine could a temporary file be in there somewhere? It was a 30+ page custom designed presentatiion that took me two weeks. i cannot believe I only saved it as PDF and .doc! My current theory is that I can only edit the document in pages as a pages file since that is what I had been doing. Please help if anyone has had this problem before or know how I can recover that screen I was working with a few days ago before I saved as a Word doc!!
Despite what Apple and its employees say Pages is not a 100% replacement for Word.
Pages files exported to .doc will have minor to major differences.
You should always have a Pages version. Exporting is only so non Mac and non Pages users may read it, and even there you should use .pdf to keep its appearance as close as possible to the original.
It sounds like you used a lot of Pages' features which turned out to not have Word equivalents.

As stated in my question I tried to open a manual I have on my desktop and it opened it Photoshop Elements edit page in a thumb nail format. I checked and all my desktop items will only open in the photoshop elements edit page. what do I need to do to correct this?
Now that we have your post in the correct forum, I have a few questions, please:
What is the file format of this "manual?"
What OS version are you running?
If this is Windows (a PC), then what is that file format associated with in File Types? It is likely that the particular format has been associated with PsE. If that is not what you want, the association can be changed from the Control Panel, to link it to the desired program.

I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. It opened normally. However, after editing, received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately and presumed they would work without a hitch. Am I missing something?
It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This changed with Snow Leopard. You now need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip. -
During the time I was using Fx 3, I found out that I could copy and past links and bookmark folders into an editable page in firefox, and manipulate those links just as I could in my emails for instance -- copy and paste to my hearts content! and the links would remain clickable--
now, having switched to Fx 4, and then a week later Fx 5, I find out that in neither of these versions can I still do this same operation-- the links from file (file:///) and bookmarks to local pages (including about:config, or about:blank) used to show up in an editable page (and then saved in the scrapbook extension, but even if saved onboard my disk, no matter) as a clickable link-- (no, about config would not open up from a saved page, Im trying to remember more examples here, the LINK would still be a correct hyperlink)
now, in Fx 4 and 5, these links are copied to the clipboard as text only!
this saddens greatly-- I was making wonderful use of this feature back in Fx 3.6-- but Fx 5 really is faster, and so far, ALL the extensions Ive come to LOVE still work great in Fx5, and things happen faster

When I navigate to my website, it doesnt work unless I actually type the filename at the end of it. Example: type in "www.whitelion.com" (this is my real domain name) and it doesnt work. When I type in "www.whitelion.com/index.html" then it works.
This is obviously inconvenient because my clients will never know to add the filename to the end of the site.
Is there any setting or way to get the page to appear by just typing the original domain name without adding the extension?

Is there a reason you are not storing your Pages documents in iCloud? That would work for both your MacBook and iPad if you choose to use it (assuming your MacBook is new enough to support an OS X version that supports iCloud).
If you choose this method, any updates you make on one device would immediately be made available on the other (once you close the file). -
Since I recently installed pages on my iPad when I try to edit a file on my mac it requires me to update the programme however when I search for updates none seem to be available.
What version are you using?

Pages in iCloud cannot edit a converted MS Word to Pages file
For our monitoring program we use some MS Word documents converted to Pages. Using the local Pages app these converted to Pages file works perfectly on our Mac. Life is good.
What we cannot do is edit with the Safari iCloud Pages. It appears these forms were created using MS Word Tables. Yes it opens, but the body of the form is a table, wherein the entire table border is highlighted in blue thus we cannot edit the table as we can using the local Pages.
Other than recreating this and other forms is there something we can do? We want others to be able to fill in these forms from within iCloud Pages in their browser.

You can do this from icloud.com (using a web browser on a Mac or PC). iCloud.com will give you the choice to download a Pages document as a Pages, PDF or Word document.

HOWEVER, while I can download a word file on icloud as a word file, one of my Pages files can only come back as a Pages file. Perhaps the advice above is no longer appropriate given the changes on iCloud. -

No very little about apple script but I would like to drop a bunch of .pages files on a script and convert all the text to bold

I just tried to piggy back onto that and BOLD everything. -
Recently updated Pages because of Mavericks update, quickly discovered how limited new version is, exported altered files back to Pages 09 format and re-opened using earlier Pages. In amending to re-save as templates again noticed a 212kb file has bloated to 5.9mb.
Has anyone any ideas or experience as it will not take long to fill up a 1TB drive at this rate! - I had left behind PC's and MS Office and was reasobaly happy using Pages for business, but it looks like Office for Mac is now going to b eneeded.Yes, I opened them all with 5 then re-saved as v5 templates. Then realised other problems with v5 so exported them all back v09 as xxx.pages files. Used some with v09 and noticed they had all increased.
I just checked again and noticed that the initial v5 saved templates had typically increased from 412kb to 1.1MB (they do have 4 graphics) - then after exporting the templates are 5.9MB in v09 an dthe files are still 412kb.
I had a similar problem many years ago using RTF files with Word and they kept bloating everytime you edited and saved due to saved or linked graphics? -

I have uploaded and installed ICLOUD to all three of my devices MAC, i pad nd Iphone.
From Ipad to Iphone i am able to retrieve PAGES documents as i write them. BUT now that i am back home i see that none of the new documents i am working on which are stored on my desktop are showing up in my PAGES file on my Ipad or Phone.
How do i save to icloud from mac, how come i can't retrieve docs from IPAD to MAC either?
should i back up my mac ICLOUD FIRST? and if so, Where do i back it up from?
going mad as i edit on one during the day and the other in the evening , and would like them to sync automatically

i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......
and the same magic was supposed to happen in reverse.

if i have to open a browser, go to www.icloud....why on earth did they not just leave us an icon to drop it in in that case?

Ok I probably realise that I've missed something in the literature on installing arch somewhere along the way, but I've spent the last 3 hours trying to find how get past this stage to no avail.
I've managed to realise I have a dhcp connection.
For DHCP IP
For this option, you need the dhcpcd package (already available on most installations). To make use of it, edit /etc/rc.conf like this:
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(eth0)
ROUTES=(!gateway)
but when i type "edit /etc/rc.conf" I get a colon
I presume I'm in some kind of editor, but I can't see what I'm supposed to change and what commands to use inside the editor.
Any help gratefully receivedbzzzz Arch is for competent Linux users - not knowing how to edit a file suggests that you do not fall into this category. If you wish to persevere and use Arch as a learning tool, then you need to be aware that you will be required to do most of the work yourself.
