Editing playlists in iTunes 11 ?

Does anyone know how to edit playlists in the new ITunes 11 ?
The tutorial states that there is a button on the bottom half of the screen that should allow for this, like there was in
previous versions, but i have not been able to find this.
Thanks for any input.

Thanks for your response...The problem is that I do not have that button under the button for the Itunes store.
I have inserted a screenshot to demonstrate this, but it might be too small to see properly.
Do i need to download Itunes again ??

  • Delete/edit playlists without iTunes?

Is it possible to delete or edit playlists directly on the iPhone without using iTune? I have 3 playlists:
    On-The-Go 1
    On-The-Go 2
    On-The-Go 3
I want to delete/edit them without syncing with iTunes. Can it be done?

    Bosamar,
You cannot delete the On-The-Go # playlists because they have been synced with your computer and copied back onto the iPhone. For those, you will need to have a computer to delete/edit those playlists. You can erase the contents of the standard On-The-Go playlist (before it has been synced and assigned a number) on the iPhone by going into the playlist, selecting Edit, and choosing Clear Playlist.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • Editing playlists in iTunes

My music folder from PC has many folders within folders. I want to copy these into iTunes in a similar way, but it would cause toooo many playlists. Is there a way to do sub playlists within playlists.
Also, how can I remove the default checkmarks on every new file added to a playlist? It seems that every time I play something, if there are checkmarks, iTunes goes to a random one and plays. I want iTunes to stop and shut up when a song is finished. Is that too much to ask?
    Thanks. Bill :-)

    Bill,
If no one here is able to step and help I'd recommend reposting in the iTunes forum. It's located at:

This is for OS X, there is a similar forum for iTunes for Windows.

  • Ever since the last download, I am unable to edit my playlists on itunes. When my phone is not plugged in, my playlists that are on my phone are not on itunes but my songs are. Only the default playlists show up. How can I get all of my playlists back?

I usually create and edit playlists on itunes and then sync my phone to update my phone.  Ever since the last upgrade, I can't do this.  When I open itunes, my playlists are not there, only the songs and the default playlists.  If I plug my phone in and click on My Phone at the top of the screen, I can see my playlists but I can't edit them.  How can I get my playlists that are on my phone back on my itunes?

  • Copy edited playlists FROM iPod BACK TO iTunes?

The iPod Touch allows the ability to edit playlists right on the device. But at the moment, this feature is useless to me, because by default the sync treats the iTune playlist as the master copy. Why I sync, my edits are lost and all of the deleted songs are restored.
Having edited a playlist on the iPod Touch, how do I copy that edited playlist back to iTunes?
Here's why I want to do this. With 130 GB of music and an 8 GB iPod Touch obviously I sync "only selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres." As a classical music listener my "songs" tend to be large. I maintain a "Current" playlist into which I add the miscellaneous things I want to listen to. When I've listened to, say, an hour-long sympohny on my iPod Touch, I want to delete it immediately to make from the "Current" playlist and make room for new content.
I don't want to carry a little notebook with me to note down what I've listened to so I can delete that days later in iTunes. Within the "Current" playlist, I basically want to "delete after listening."

Then you can copy them back through iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • How to edit ipod touch 4th gen playlists in iTunes 11??

Okay, maybe this is just me and I can't figure it out. But ever since the update (which I hate, btw) I have had a really hard time editing my ipod touch playlists. I don't have ALL of my music from my iPod in my iTunes library, so I like to be able to edit my playlists on my iPod without having to sync anything. But now, I can NOT for the LIFE OF ME figure out how to edit my iPod playlists in iTunes itself. Here are the specific things I want to do that I can't figure out:
    1. If I have a newly downloaded song in my iTunes library, it won't let me drag it to a specific playlist in my ipod. It makes me just drag the song onto my ipod and I have to then go into my ACTUAL ipod and add that song to whatever playlist I want. But I have to do it ON my ipod. I can't do it from Itunes.
    2. If I want to delete a song from a playlist on my ipod/ move any songs around in my playlists, I can't do it from itunes like I used to. I have to do it manually on the ipod.
Theres a few other things that I don't like but can live with. But this is ridiculous. Apple is really ******* me off. Can ANYONE out there help me with any of these problems? Is it something I'm just going to have to deal with? Or is there a way around it? Or do I have to uncheck something that will let me edit??? AHHH HELPPPPP MEEEE........

There is the root of the problem.
Why is all the content on the device not in iTunes?

  • What is the difference between formats when exporting playlists in iTunes?

The available options are plain or unicode text, XML, M3U and M3U8 when exporting a playlist. Is there a difference in "functionality" of a particular format or is it merely a matter of compatibility with a particular platform or software? In particular I am trying to figure out if a playlist from iTunes would be able to be read and "processed" on a flash drive plugged into a late model car stereo which has a USB port.
    MacBook 4,1    (13-inch Early 2008)
    OSX 10.6.8
    iTunes 11.3.1 (2)

.m3u8 should be the same as .m3u but with slightly different handling of Unicode characters that fall outside of the standard set of ASCII symbols. iTunes can import and export all three formats but .m3u is probably the one your car stereo will be looking for. iTunes will export a playlist with absolute file paths for each track however for your purpose what you probably need is all of the tracks placed in the root of the drive and to edit the .m3u file to exclude all but the filename so that a relative link from the same folder as the .m3u identifies the file.
I wrote a Windows only script for this task a while back, as discussed here: Re: Copying playlist to USB ?

  • How do i create a playlist in itunes from my iphone 4s?

how do i create a playlist in itunes from my iphone 4s?

On my iphone 4s I have 2 songs in the purchased category that I want to manually move into an existing playlist.  I can not figure it out.
If the existing playlist is a regular (non-smart) playlist, then you can edit it directly on the iPhone. Just select the playlist and you should see an "Edit" button at the top, above the songs.  If you don't see that, then it must be a smart playlist since those can't be edited on the device. Once you tap the Edit button you would then navigate to the song you want to add and press the blue + sign to the right of the song, then press Done when you're finished.
One caveat though, if you auto-sync your iPhone, the changes you make will not be preserved -- the playlist will revert to how it was next time you sync to iTunes.  So if you want to edit a playlist on your iPhone and then transfer it to iTunes, you have to create a new (empty) playlist on your iPhone, add the playlist that you wanted to edit to the new playlist, then add or delete more songs to the new playlist.  When you auto-sync, the new playlist will transfer to your iTunes library.
But if you manually manage your iPhone, the playlist should remain in its edited state even if you connect to your library (but admittedly its been awhile since I tried manual mode).

  • Can't import edited song from iTunes to iPhoto

    Hi,
I've created a slideshow in iPhoto and a playlist in iTunes to go with the slideshow. I shortened one of the songs in the playlist from 4.5 minutes to 1.5 minutes (file-get info-options). Within iTunes the song is shortened but when I import the playlist to iPhoto the song reverts back to its original length. I realise there is a workaround using iDVD (when I import the song into iDVD it stays at 1.5 minutes unlike iPhoto) but it means I have to redo the whole slideshow again which I'd prefer to avoid.
Has anyone any suggestions how to shorten a song for a slideshow within iPhoto?

I don't build slide shows, so not sure how hard it is to do in iDVD, but you can burn a song to CD and then rip it back into iTunes. Then you can edit the song in Garage Band. You might want to do this with a number of songs that you might use in one sitting, as it's pretty tedious.
One other thought: check if Amazon has the mp3 of the same song. The content there is not protected (I think the music producers cut that deal just to stick it to Apple) and is $0.99 per song like on iTunes. Might be worth another buck to avoid all this hassle. iTunes is easier to search and buy from (IMO) and has a better selection, but you might get lucky at Amazon. I've ended up buying the same song again at Amazon just for this reason.

I'm running windows XP and seem to have found a partial solution that does not involve vague half assed directions =P
Open iTunes, go to file, import, and select the latest "Temp" file, I got most of my playlists and songs back that way.
Edit: This file is in the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes folder

  • My "edit playlist" button has disappeared!

Recently, my "edit playlist" button has disappeared all together when I right-click a playlist. I do know how to manually add to a playlist, but it's inconvenient. It's there when I click File, but I can't click on it. I've tried calling Apple, but of course, they wanted to charge me. I tried uninstalling iTunes, but it didn't help. I would very much appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks.

I'm slightly confused by your problem.
The only "edit playlist" option is to Edit Smart Playlist, which allows you to change the rules for Smart Playlists, but that does not allow you to add or remove individual songs. Here's a screenshot of the different Playlist types:
To edit a Regular Playlist, simply drag the songs you want into it, or delete the songs from it.
If you highlight a regular Playlist and click on File, the Edit Playlist is greyed out and cannot be used. Frankly, I don't know why it's even shown.
If I want to delete the song Dap Walk from this Playlist, I simply right-click it and choose Delete:

  • TS1717 lost edit playlist functionality

I reinstalled itunes on my Windows 7 laptop because it had issues opening in the last couple of days.  I also lost ability to edit playlist yesterday.  I reinstalled software, the opening itunes issue is resolved, but still cannot edit playlists - the option is greyed out in the menu, and the radio button on the top right of the page has gone and I cannot split the screen to see and manually manipulate the playlist whilst looking at other playlists/library.  Any ideas on how I can resolve this?

I'm having the same issue. Had the playlists on the top of the music list this morning, and now it's gone. Can't edit my playlists unless I drag a song from Music into the playlist name in the sidebar. Every bloody time they update the software they make things worse. Hopefully someone will give both of us an answer on how to fix this.

  • Recovering playlists in itunes

can I save the xml file folder from my old emac to a cd and import it into itunes on my new imac so I can get my playlists back? What will happen if I just copy the xml folder to a cd, then import it into itunes on the new computer? I have about 300 playlists.
Here's what happened: I got a new imac, and now I have all 10,000 of my songs on my new imac in the itunes library. However, there are no playlists. The playlists are still on my old emac. I want to copy the xml folder to a cd and then import the cd into itunes on my new imac.....is it possible?

You should be able to recover playlists and metadata (e.g., ratings and playcounts) by forcing iTunes to rebuild the information in the iTunes Library file -- which is the database of songs and playlists that iTunes itself uses -- from the iTunes Music Library.xml file. You can do this by editing the iTunes Library file and deleting all of its contents. Deleting the iTunes Library file does not work, because iTunes will simply generate a new file that is appropriate for a newly created iTunes with no previous contents. If you're using all the same defaults, so that the music files are in the same directory, and your user account name is the same on the new computer, you can use the original xml file. Otherwise, you will have to edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file in Text Edit (or any hex editor) first, to correct the pathnames to the music files with Find and Replace.
If your Music Library fits on your iPod, Apple gives instructions on How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer, which doesn't require manipulating the above files. You might alternatively be able to use the iPod.iTunes software.
There are a few posts from the iLounge forums that might help:
Making iTunes use new library location without losing metadata outlines the process described above
Restoring iTunes to a new disk while preserving metadata is from a thread about recovering an iTunes Library onto a new computer from a backup (which should also work; read the whole thread).
Transferring files to a new computer shows how to get your iTunes working with direct file transfers (like from backup)
Transferring iTunes Library from PC to Mac outlines the same process described above, but cross-platform.
Other relevant posts can be found by using the search function at the iLounge forums.

  • Importing Windows Media Player playlist into itunes is possible?

    Please Help!
Is there any way to import a WMP(*.m3u, *.txt or whatever) playlist into iTunes?
I just want to know it is possible or not, because I am tired of making same playlists for WMP and iTunes everytime for several devices.

Yes, though as I recall iTunes wants absoulte file paths. You either need to edit the playlist before import or use a script I wrote called ImportM3U which, as a bonus, can convert any unprotected WMA files on the fly and add them to the playlist.
BTW, if you're going to try to get WMP & iTunes to share playlists you'd better disable any options for automatically organizing files. See Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely for more info.
