Editing video by half frames or less
I'm and audio guy trying to edit video, so I'm not sure if I'm using the correct terms, but can you slide video in Final Cut Pro by less than a frame? e.g. a half frame or 1/4 frame, or even miliseconds?
I know that in ProTools you can "nudge" audio around on many different "grids". Is is possible to view Final Cut Pro in a 1/2 or 1/4 frame 'grid'?
The goal here is to edit 4 video segments (or video 'tracks') that must line up with my 'clap board' start. I can see my 'clap' in the audio wave form for all 4 video tracks, but they are just slightly off, by a 1/2 and 1/4 frame. Hence I need to slide them just a bit to have them line up.
Thanks for your help, and I apologize if I'm not using the correct terms.

Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4) Final Cut Pro HD 4.5
Maybe this is just the difference between audio and video editing programs, not sure. Perhaps there are better video programs out there that can nudge video in smaller increments?
In the audio program I am running, ProTools, you can nudge audio by 1/4 frame or a sub frame. You can also set the grid to view these increments, thus you are able to 'snap' audio (and one track of video) to a 1/4 frame or sub frame grid.
Hence I could bring the video into ProTools and adjust it so that the very beginning of the video is where my 'clap' is, then import that into Final Cut Pro. However, this would add another step of processing the video and I may loose some quality. (ProTools converts the video during a 'bounce to video' step when exporting.)
For the record, in the audio world a 1/4 frame can be very obvious. The video I am working on shows three percussionists playing very complex 32nd-note patterns at 120 bpm. If the audio is 1/4-frame off, it sounds like absolute mud.
We tested two video tracks together, which were off by a 1/2 frame, and it actually looks ok. I was recording the audio simultaneously in ProTools so I'm using that audio anyway, so it will work out fine.
I still feel that Final Cut Pro should have the ability to 'razor' at the exact point you want to cut, then snap to the frame.
Thanks for the help.
Note to Apple: talk to DigiDesign's ProTools programmers about showing a 1/4-frame or sub-frame grid in Final Cut Pro. Maybe they can help you.

Edit video timing "ghost frame"
Building a project with narrator video used throughout course. The video is one long file with individual video segments placed and timed on each slide using "edit video timing" in CP 5.5.
The problem: frequently during playback, the video referenced on a slide will display a random "ghost frame" before the correct video begins to play. This is distracting since our design places the narrator on a clean white background. The "ghost" appears to be a random frame from later in the video referenced on the slide.
To determine where the frame was being pulled from we put timecode on the video and recorded the screen during playback. Attached is small video file that illustrates the problem. Note that each playback attempt may show a different frame. Each frame will be from the same general section of the video.
Video is F4V exported from Adobe Media Encoder.
Appreciate any help.
Jeff
Video sample is at
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17217781/ghost%20frame%20on%20load.movAttached are the publish settings. Based on your suggestion we published at "high" quality and tested this morning. No apparent change in the "ghosting" problem. We have noticed that the ghosting problem gets worse the longer the video file that is timed. A seemingly obvious solution would be be make the video files shorter, however, using too many video files in a project causes audio dropout based on too many Flash player threads being generated. I can point you to a long discussion thread on this if you don't know what I am referring to.
I appreciate any other suggestions.

Please confirm that it is currently IMPOSSIBLE to edit audio or video in Premiere Pro 5.5 to measurements LESS THAN 1 frame.
It appears in versions prior to CS5.0 one could select AUDIO UNITS by right clicking timecode display to edit audio (and presumably
video for that matter) to SAMPLE RATE accuracy.
Despite a long and involved support phone call including taking control of our computer by remote, it appears this is NOT currently
possible.
If this is indeed so - we will have to adjust our work flow to edit audio OUTSIDE of Premiere.
Thank you...please confirm and advise.Thank you for your input.
YES - I've seen the "right click Time Code display and switch to audio units timeline solution - yet audio units do NOT appear as an option for me...hence all of this drama.
ADOBE - do I have a munged install? Any other advice? We keep a clean system (Mac Pro 10.6.11 or whatever is last iteration of SL). I guess I could try installing into a new User and see if it behaves any differently.
Sigh...we bailed on FCP7 after trying FCPX and also passed on going to Avid MC. Hope PP is reliable for our work flow...again thx for all help.

Mov files dropping video and audio frames CC 2014
I have been experiencing playback issues in Premiere and just got off the phone with Adobe support. It appears that there is known issue with .mov files dropping video and audio frames that will likely be fixed in the next release. My entire project is .mov files and we need to get some serious editing done to complete a rough cut of our film. As a bandaid, we have reverted the playback renderer to software only and I am experimenting with different preview file formats to see if I will have less dropped frames. I want to avoid converting my media from mov files at all costs as this would be very time consuming with over 100 hours of footage.
Please let me know if you have any other workarounds!

Trouble getting Final Cut edited video to DVD
So here's the background.. I had some old VHS videos that I wanted to edit and put on DVD for storage/easier viewing if the desire hit me. So it's been months and i'm still laboring over this stupid project finding the best work flow.
After struggling with iDVD, compressor (3 days to convert a 3 hr video, seriously?), DVD Studio Pro and other options I decided to forget the fancy menus and just export the **** thing. Quality isn't my main concern so I figured put it in VisualHub and convert to DVD. This worked fine for VHS Tape 1 but now I'm trying it to do it VHS Tape 2 and for some reason everytime it gets to a certain point, it hangs forever. Now initially I thought this was VisualHub, so I did a test conversion in Handbrake to find it hang in the same place. I then decided, I'd re-export my video from FCP as something must be wrong with the original export mp4 file. I exported from FCP again and tried VisualHub again, again hangs at the same time. I then inspected the video file and pinpointed the spot where VH stops converting, except it plays fine from the original exported mp4. I then checked in FCP to see if perhaps there was something in the timeline to cause this hitch, again no sign of trouble. I tried various formats for converting and the same thing happens over and over.
To make a very long story short, does anyone know why a video file would be hanging VH and any other program that tries to convert it in the same spot? Can anyone suggest a quick/easy workflow for FCP to DVD format. I'm working on my Macbook Pro so it's frustrating tying up my laptop for hours on endI wasn't notified that there were replies to this so sorry for the delay. Thanks so much for the suggestions. The videos were captured with EyeTV; I'm pretty sure they have their own file type but not sure what actual encoding they use. At any rate, I can export to a variety of formats from there.
In my trials I had tried exporting both self-contained and not.. and while I usually didn't use Recompress All Frames, I did try it once and it didn't prove helpful.
I've tried compressor again and I got it to output, but I'm still trying to work out how to get it to come together in DVD-SP. I've used it before but never with separate audio & video files. I'd say I just need to sit down when I have some time to toy around.
As for option 2, I tried iDVD as my first option way way back when I started editing these but as the video files are fairly long, they weren't fitting on a standard dvd and as I don't have a dual-layer burner it wouldn't let me burn or save as a disc image, saying I needed to cut down the file which is not what I wanted to do. I did at one point try cutting the video in half, even then though the conversion process took 24+ hours which I'm not sure why.
Thanks for the suggestions. I know the MPEG-4 conversion makes no sense but it was sort of my last ditch effort to get something working. Quality of the video wasn't my main concern as it's already a low quality tv rip. Obviously I'd rather not make it worse, but I traded quality for expediency and it actually working.
Thanks again! -
Video Format Total Solution: How to Convert and Edit Video on Windows/Mac
More and More video formats are coming out with different video encoders and it makes our spare time more and more colorful. However, it is not to say that there is no problems. Actually, different video formats make it difficult to share video with others, even your own camcorder and iPod. Is there an easy way to convert videos effectively. Yes, there is.
In this article, I will show you guys how to convert videos on windows and mac.
Part 1. How to Convert and Edit Videos on Windows
For Windows users, you need a Video Converter(http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-video-converter.html) to do that for you.
Here I use Aiseesoft Total Video Converter(http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-video-converter.html)
Step 1: Download and install Aiseesoft Total Video Converter
After you download it to your computer, double click it and it is really easy to install.
You just need to click “next” and it will complete it in seconds. It will automatically run after installation.
http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/total-video-converter/screen.jpg
Step 2: Load Video
Click “Add File” to find the video that you want to convert and click “open”. It will be loaded automatically.
Step 3: Select the target to decode
In the “Profile” drop download list you can find your target according the usage of your output video, such as if you want to put the video on your iPod touch, you can select the “iPod” in the first list and “iPod touch 2 MPEG-4 640*480(*.mp4)” in the second list.
Step 4: Set Advanced Parameters
After you select the right output profile, you can click “setting” button to set your advanced parameters. You can adjust video and audio settings separately. In video section, you can change “video encoder”, “resolution”, “frame rate”, “video bitrate”In audio section, you can change “audio encoder”, “sample rate”, “channel”, “audio bitrate”If you want to save this profile and settings and use it next time you can click “save as” button to give a name to it. And the next time you want to use it you can find it in the profile list named “user defined”.
Step 5: Choose a Destination
To browse and find a output folder for your output files or just the default one.
Finally, Click “Convert” button to begin your conversion, here in the converting
interface you can choose “shut down the computer when conversion complete” or “open output folder when conversion complete” or you just do not choose neither one.
Tips: How to Edit the Output Video
This video converter is also a video editor, you can use it to edit your output video as follows:
http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/total-video-converter/effect.jpg
1. Effect:
You are allowed to adjust the “Brightness”, “Contrast”, “Saturation” and you can choose the “deinterlacing” to make the video more enjoyable.
2. Trim:
In “Trim” section you can pick up any part of the video to convert.
There are two ways to select the part of the video you want. One is set the start and end time in the box. The other one is to drag the start and end button in the processing bar.
3. Crop:
This function allows you to choose a certain play area to convert. That means you can choose a part of the screen you like to convert. For example, you just like the tv in the middle of the screen, then you can drag the frame around the preview window to select the tv and the output preview will show you the output video. In this section you can also choose the “zoom mode”, such as “keep original”, “full screen”, “16:9”, “4:3”.
4. Watermark
In the section, you can add a watermark on the output video to show people something, such as your name, website, studio name or other things. The watermark could be words and picture. You can adjust the transparent of the watermark easily to make it more beautiful.
Part 2. How to Convert Video on Mac
This time you need a Video Converter for Mac(http://www.aiseesoft.com/video-converter-for-mac.html)
Step 1: Add File
Click “Add File” button to load the video you want to converter
http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/mac-video-converter/steps.jpg
Step 2: Choose profile and adjust settings
You can find your output video format from a drop-list called “Profile”You can also adjust the specific settings of the output video, such as “Resolution”, “Bitrate”, “Encoder” and so on.@ Tamwini
Your only goal is to sell software.

How can I edit videos uploaded to MobileMe (soon to be iCloud)
Perhaps I'm missing something, but it's less than intuitive how the MobileMe Gallery handles video.
You can post and delete photos easily through iPhoto, but how does one deal with the movies one uploads through iMovie?
I can't seem to find a nice centralized interface.
Is this coming in Lion? (Must watch Keynote tonight!)Not sure what you mean. If you add movies to a MobileMe gallery in iPhoto and publish they are available online to play. Just like photos are available to be viewed. Here;s such a gallery: Movie Gallery.
If you need to edit videos you need to do that on your Computer with iMovie or other video editing software.

Which of these 2 laptops would be my best choice for editing video?
I am going to get a new laptop mainly to use for LR and PS but I also want to be able to edit video. Which of these 2 laptops is my best option...
ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71
Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5 GHz
16 GB DDR3
1000 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
17.3-Inch Screen, Nvidia GTX970M 3GB GDDR5
Windows 8.1
Or
Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-791G-730V
Intel Core i7-4720HQ Processor (2.6 GHz)
16 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 256 GB Solid-State Drive
17.3-Inch Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
Windows 8.1, 4-hour battery life
Additionally, if you feel there is a better choice for $1500 or less, I would love to hear that advice as well. I would really appreciate your help in making this decision. Thanks!Of the 2 the Asus everyday. You won't notice the difference in the CPU's but you will more so with the GPU's as the 970 is a decent step up from the 860m. Add in extra SSD/HDD and RAM (I believe it goes up to 32GB but check), and see if they have allocated the 16GB as 2x8GB sticks or 4x4GB sticks.
Other option I would suggest looking at a custom PC builder such as Cyberpower, Xotic or other (no affiliations, heck I don't even live in the same country). You will be able to get a much more tailored system with a better upgrade path within your budget. You will get better CPU, better GPU, RAM options up to 32GB and more flexible drive and msata combinations and most importantly some flexibility with the way the system is configured. Some are re-brands of popular gaming laptops, some are from the more custom line of chassis and some are just tweaked versions of your off the shelf names. Plus you don't have to crack the thing open to replace drives etc. that you are paying for but won't use due to slow speeds and the warranty implications that can come from doing this
Not saying buy this as you need to shop around and find what suits you best but as an example this is from Xotic.

Photoshop Edited Video Not Playing In Premiere Pro
Hi All
Apologies if this thread has been repeated elsewhere but I am getting pretty deperate in trying to sorth this problem out.
I am creating a remastered project of my Sister's Wedding video and I want to touch up a few frames in the video usinf Photoshop.
Here are the steps I did:
1) I have created a new Photoshop (PSD) file within Premiere Pro with the same frame size/rate etc.
2) I then import the wedding video into the PSD doucument in photoshop which creates a video layer.
3) I search the frames that require repair and edit using the tools in PS.
4) Then Save the the file in PS.
5) I move back to PPro and Import the PSD file into the project panel. As there was only one video layer, I selected 'all layers'.
6) I move the PSD file to the timeline and press play and the program monitor just shows the last frame I edited in Photoshop even though the sequence is over 90 minutes long! The playhead moves but just a single frame shown on the monitor.
Am I missing something here? I know you can have a Photoshop/Premiere Pro workglow and do all the edits or filtering, transitions necessary and it will automatically update in Premiere Pro, but this simply isn't working as I'd expect.
I am an amateur user of these applications and being partially sighted probably doesn't help either, so any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
DaveHi Dave,
Haven't touched up any video in Photoshop in a couple of years, but the last step is definitely to export as VIDEO from PS, which will be an .MOV file. A .PSD file is not video
EDIT: Just Googled "how to edit video in photoshop", tons of tutorial vids come up right away
Thanks

Cannot play/edit video from camcorder (Sony)
I am using iMovie 11 (latest version) under Lion on a 17" MBP with 8gb RAM. There are two scenarios I have followed to edit video from my Sony HDR-CX150 camcorder:
I import directly into iMovie from the camera using a USB cable. The program finds the video files, imports them into clips, and they appear in the clip area of the program's screen.
I read the files into a folder and convert them to .mp4 files using Video-Converter from Wondershare. I then import the mp4 clips into iMovie with the same results as in 1.
In both cases, when I attempt to play a clip, is starts, I heart the sound for about 3-5 seconds, after which it mutes. The video does not play; the playback pane continues to show the first frame of the clip. If I scrub along the clip, however, I see the video play and hear the audio. I know that Apple says they don't support this Sony camera in iMovie, but it seems that it should at least support .mp4 clips as I create with Video-Converter.
I have tried recording in HD and Standard modes, to no avail. Quicktime plays the clips without a hitch. Any help is greatly appreciated!Your '''''More System Details''''' doesn't show Adobe Flash as being installed! Did you install the Plugin version of Flash? I would like to export a video with > 500 frames as a GIF - can the upper limit be adjusted? i'm using photoshop cs6
Yes, choose one of the presets in the Export Settings under the format H.264 instead of mpeg4.
Best is not to use Match Sequence Settings if you are not familiair with settings. You might end up with a preview codec, which is of lesser quality in your end product. -
When trying to import music files I get an error message Thea says "importer reported a generic error". Also when editing video, screen views look great but when I transfer to PC or flash drive video quality is very poor. Any suggestions?

Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 (presumed 64 bit).....
1. Music files and error message...are these music files from iTunes? If so, convert them to .wav in iTunes to convert them to wav version, and then import the .wav version into Premiere Elements 13 project using Premiere Elements 13 Expert workspace's Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag the wav version to the Soundtrack.
The following are the instructions for the iTunes converting

a. What are the properties of the source media?
b. What project preset did you (manually) or the project (automatically) set to match the properties of the source media.
(If you do not know, please tell us what you see for the readings of Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio - even
if the fields look grayed out.)
c. For your export...Publish+Share/Computer/and then what? And what preset? Did you use the default settings of the preset or did you

Let us start here and then decide what next.

Hey, I've been editing a short movie with premiere and I accidentally removed the audio from half the footage and can't restore it, all the auto save files saved it after I finished editing. All I want to do is get the audio from the edited video, as the video clips are there but the audio aren't, only in the original clip does it have the audio.
Thanks,
JoshIf the original clip stil has the audio, perhaps you could insert this on the end of your sequence. Unlink the audio, then delete the original clip and slide the unlinked audio back into the position you want it along the timeline.

iMac late 2012 Mac OS X 10.8.3Hi Thomas,
If you are asking if you can somehow "edit" at the field level, then no. But if you want to see the full frame (combined fields), in the Program Monitor, right-click in it (or Mac equivalent) or there is a wrench there to click on as well, and in the drop down list, look at Fields options and set to BOTH rather than upper or lower.

Witch MacBook is the best to buy if i want to Edit videos and photos? Any advice?
Hi Catflow and welcome to Apple Support.
So it kind of depends on how intensive your editing will be, especially videos. A professional video editor will have multiple monitors and the fastest possible Mac. I knew a video editor in Chicago who ran with 5 36" Cinema Monitors and an 8 Core Mac Pro.
A photo editor will have the largest possible monitor and processor speed would be less critical. I had a client who was a professional photographer. She wanted to buy an iMac. I told her she needed a Mac Pro with two Cinema Monitors. Later she thanked me because she said, "The clients see my pictures on those two huge monitors and they are immediately sold."
So if you want to stay with a laptop get the largest display you can with the max memory and maybe even a SSD. You could also use a smaller more portable model with an external display.
I put 8GB RAM and a SSD in this early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. Photoshop CS6 opens in 3 seconds vrs. 45 before the upgrade! I don't do a lot of photo editing. If I did and have done I'd use my Wife's Mini with the 23" Cinema display or my Daughter's iMac i5 with the 21.5" display!
