EHP4 backup and Dialog instances
Hello All,
We intend to kick off the EHP4 PRD Downtime phase by Friday 10 PM.
Can you please provide me expert thoughts on the following:
1) When should we backup the PRD Database? (a) Anytime After the end of pre-processing phase when production operations are going on (b) after stopping of Application Servers and immediately before commencing the Downtime Phase
2) Is the online database backup fine or do we need a cold backup?
3) What steps specific to Dialog Instances are necassary like any profile parameter changes, explicit kernel upgrade on Dialog Instances before and after the downtime phase?
Thanks,
Antarpreet
Hi,

Once you will finish Pre-processing phase then it will ask you take backup of database, backup of upgrade directory and stop all productive operation. And then start downtime phase. At that phase you should take the backup. And this backup should be taken after stopping of application servers.
> 2) Is the online database backup fine or do we need a cold backup?

I would suggest you to take offline backup only because if you will take online backup then users will be there in the system which makes the backup inconsistent since productive operations will be on that time. Main idea to take backup is because if something goes wrong in downtime phase then you can restore the system at same stage before starting downtime. And if you will take online backup then users will be working that time so I think it defeats the purpose itself.

For dialog instance, you can check SAP note 1245473 Add. Info. - SAP Enhancement Package Installer 7.00. Extract below from this note:
Updating Dialog Instances
After the enhancement package installation on the central instance, you
need to update the dialog instances accordingly. To do this, you install
the new dialog instances on top of the old dialog instances using the
tool SAPinst.
You can now also install more dialog instances, if necessary.
3. Save your dialog instance profiles, if you want to reuse them.
4. In case of a dual-stack system or a Java system, uninstall the old
dialog instances as described in the installation guide for your
source release.
5. To install a new dialog instance, proceed as described in the
document Installation Guide - <SAP NetWeaver / SAP application>
(<Technology>) on <Operating System>: <Database>.
6. If you use other instance numbers than on the source release and
reuse the old dialog instance profiles, adapt the instance numbers
in the profiles.
Thanks

CI (ABAP+Java) & DB in one AIX box and dialog Instance on a Linux box
We trying to install SAP, CI+DB in one AIX box and dialog Instance on a Linux box. We are facing problem when trying to install Java Dialog Instance. Is it possible and recomended to install in the above manner?
Has anyone done this? please share your exepeirience.
thanks & regards,
Harsha.
ps we have read the Note 1067221 - Central Note for Heterogeneous Installation, which indicates this is possible. If you would have stated, which kind of problem you are facing, we could have seen, if the problem is related to because of heterogeneity or because of something different.
It should be possible to do that - yes

Hello Forum !
On our previous SAP BW3.5 and SEM installation we were told that due to the locking mechanisms within the SAP SEM modules the SAP system was unable to handle more than one instance (Central Instance), and that we would not be able to add any dialog instances to this configuration.
I have been unable to confirm this with any documentation, but several consultancy firms have claimed the same.
Can anyone on this forum confirm that this is the case, and if so. Does the same limitations apply to a SAP BI 7.0 with SEM installation.
Regards
Kjell Erik Furnes
SAP BasisHi,
For SEM it is better to have a FI knowledge because particularly when you deal with SEM-BCS you need to know FI very well.
If it is mere SEM-BPS then youe present knowledge will do.
Hope this helps.
Assign points if useful.

Performance of EHP4 Oil and Gas instance during interface loads
I have EHP4 running usage type Oil and Gas running on unix 64 bit.
I have noticed the swap space usage increasing in the OS level.
How can I find which processes are consuming swap space and not releasing the swap space.
Where can I find out which user or which process is consuming swap space?
Thanks
Weyland Y.Here is how to monitor memory usage within the SAP instance.
You can use transaction SM04 -> Goto -> Memory to see memory used per user. And you can use transaction SM50 -> double click on a running process to see the actual memory used by that process.
Besides that, you can use transaction ST02 to see the overall memory used (Extended and Heap memory are the most interesting):
SAP Memory Curr.Use % CurUse[KB] MaxUse[KB]
Roll area 0.06 160 13,520
Page area 0.02 56 61,272
Extended memory 12.61 129,024 156,672
Heap memory 0 0

SMD Agents for Dialog Instances and Distributed Systems
Hi,
We are planning to install SMD agents in our landscape.
Is it sufficient if we install SMD agent on the central instance Host to monitor all the instances ( CI + Dialog Instances)
or
Do we need to install SMD agents individually for all the Instances each for CI and Dialog Instances.
Also , If we have CI and DB on a separate host (Distributed Environment), Do we need to install SMD Agent on DB host also.
Thanks,
TanujHello Tanuj,
Please refer to note 1365123 - Installation of Diagnostics Agents and check the attachments (AgentInstallationStrategy.zip) for this note.

Java Server Nodes / Dialog Instance
Hi All,
When do we go for increase of Java Server nodes and Dialog instance?
Can i know the pros and cons of the same
my server is very slow in responding. I have tried the option of increasing the heap size but then i have little sucess
Rgds
adityaInstall a server process when the incoming request are many and the you can utilize more RAM memory
for eg if there are 8GB RAM and you have 1 server process the maximum u can give it is 2GB while the max 4GB can be utilized by any of the server processes in all in this system
Do not increase this heap size on the same server process (in windows u cant do it also max is 2GB) since then the garbage collection would take longer and also would run in few intervals
A Dialog instance is used when the system resources is completely exhausted and then we go for another hardware and install a fresh dailog instance there.. Its always recommended to use a Web Dispatcher in between the outside world and the SAP server in cluster mode
Hope i am right since i didnt find this information anywhere its based on my understanding and brainstorming sessions with other admins

Central Instance on Windows, Dialog Instance on HP-UX
Hi,
Is it possible to have Central Instance installed on Windows 2003 and Dialog Instance on HP-UX 11.23?
Thanks
MahendraHi Mahendra,
I guess it depends wether you want to have ABAP only, or j2ee stack as well.
The J2ee stack over multiple OS (read J2EE SDK's) for CI and Dialog instances is not supported.
There is a note about it, but i do not have the number right now.

Hi Friends
If more than one dialog instance can be installed in a computer?
I have installed a sap system(abap stack), central instance and dialog instance are in the same server. the dialog instance has started up, but I can't see the dialog instance through SM51. If some configuration is missing?
tons of thanks.

Dialog Instance writing and reading from wrong global directory
Hi,
I have just completed a HA installation of ECC 6 on a Windows 2008 cluster. On node B we have the CI installed and on node A we have an additional DI installed. The installation drive for these local instances is the I drive in both cases. The ASCS instance is installed on the clustered N drive.
For some reason when a job runs on the Dialog Instance installed on node A it writes it log file to the I:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\100JOBLG directory rather that to the
<sap cluster hostname>\sapmnt\<SID>\SYS\global\100JOBLG directory (which would equate to N:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\100JOBLG). Similarly when I try a read a job log from the DI on node A it tries to read from I:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\global\100JOBLG and when it can find the log it gives an error.
If anybody has any ideas as to how I can reconfigure the instance to read and write to the correct directory that would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Greg.Have you set a different SAPGLOBALHOST or DIR_GLOBAL in your instance profile?
Kind regards,
Mark -
Installing Dialog Instances with ECC 6.0 and SQL Server 2005
Hi, I have my ECC 6.0 SAP Server, it is Central Instance, Database instance, all in one. My users are working fine, however we will be adding some new users (15) and we want add a Dialog Instance. Can I add one Dialog instance to my landscape without any changes to my SAP Server ??? ..... My dialog instance will be in a new host.
My hardware SAP Server is: 16 GB RAM, 500 GB RAID 5 for my database, four processors.
What could be my Dialogue Instance hardware?
I have read than I must install with sapinst and select Dialogue Instance and follow instructions. Are there any others considerations?? .....
Do I must install SQL Server in the host Dialog instance ??.
Please if you have some suggestions.
Regards.Hello Jose,
You can install your dialog instance without doing any change to the existing setup as you have mentioned its on a seprate new host.
Two CPU's and 8GB memory would be fine for your dialog instance. It all depends on your requirement.
Yes you need to install the dialog instance using SAPINST, its kool and sapinst would take care of all.
You need not install any SQL server in the dialog instance host only you need to have a SQL client installed but that would be taken care by SAPINST.
Hope this would clarify your query.
Thanks and Regards,

Differnce between central instance ,dialog instance and application instanc
Hi all
Please explain me what is central instance. what is it differnce betwenn the
other instances like dilaog instance ,apllication instance.
What is the exact use of having many instances ?
regards
Sanjeev.SHi Sanjeev,
First of all let me Clarify between Cental instance(CI)and Central Service instance(SCS). When you install NW04/NW04s systems on WIndows, when you open you windows console, you would first find the SID name that you have installed and when you expand this you'll find 2 instances. When you expand the first instance you'll find that there are message server and Enqueue server listed. This instance is called as Central Service instance or simply called SCS. You can look at the folder structure /usr/sap/<SID>/.
Now the second instance is called as Central instance, when expanded you would see a SDM, a dispatcher and a server node. This is the instance which processes all your requests.
Now answering your question about Dialog instance, When the CI is overloaded, i.e. your dispatcher is overloaded and your server is overloaded , you would install a dialog instance, which means that the database need not be installed for the Dialog instance and it can be on any system. While installing the Dialog instance it would ask you which Cental instance I have to refer, then you would be giving the necessary system to which you have created a dialog instance.
Giving a graphical view,
SID < J2E>
< DATABASE>
<hostname>00 message server
enqueue server
<hostname>01 SDM
dispatcher
server0
This is your one SAP system. Now you feel that this system is overloaded with lot of users, any there are many user who will be logging in again, so what you would do is install a dialog instance which would be referiing to J2E database but will have its own dispatcher and server0. SDM, message server and enqueue server are only one per systems.
Now the dialog instance for J2E would look like this
SID < K2E>
<hostname2>01 dispatcher
server0
Dialog instance is mainly for load balacing, now you can access the database of J2E by typing a different URL i.e. of K2E and hostname2 but still accees the data of the J2E. The communication between Dialog and Central instance is thru message server.
In case you find it difficult to push thru, please let me know.. -
BI : dialog instance does not start
Hi all.
--> Before explain you our problem, I'm going to tell you our scenario: We have an HP-UX cluster where we have installed BI system ABAP+JAVA stack (NW 701). We have got one central package with SAP and oracle in node1 and one dialog instance in node2.
--> When we start the cluster, central instance starts succesfully and all works fine. But at the moment we start dialog one in second node, for this instance only starts ABAP stack, but not java one. All logs shows a clear error, and it is that not connect to database. But at the same time, in central instance we are not able to start configtool because not connection to database. It's strange because in all nodes, processes are running. Just at the moment we stop dialog instance, central one works fine again and configtool access is succesfully.
Lot of bootstrap logs appear, so we are thinking that some parameters are wrong in configtool, but we are not so sure.
Can anybody help us with this issue? What can be causing that database connection is lost when starting dialog instance?
Thanks a lot to all in advance.
Best regardsHi,
which way you apply kernel patch on application server for iseries?
use following method to apply kernel patch on application server for iseries.
stop application server.
download the kernel sapexe.sar and saexedb.sar application server on windows for iseries.
extract both file in one folder. i.e kernel
also download patch for IGS i.e igs.sar
and extract it in same folder. i.e kernel
now
backup NTI386 folder on iSeries host.
\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\uc\NTI386
now copy the content of extracted kernel from folder kernel to NTI386 folder.
now start the application server host.
consider following to install application server for iseries on windows server.
if you use a 64 bit windows server, please have look to Note 734428:
This Application Server (64 bit) is available for EM64T/AMD64 technologies and NOT for Itanium
also check Note 680617 - INST: Appl.Server in Heterogeneous SAP System Environment

Please Some Tips!
Best Regards,
Erick ILarrazaHi Deepak,
Thanks a lot for your reply, in this case the problem was with the Dialog Instance (Only SAP apps, not Oracle).
We shutdown the instance with the Microsoft SAP Management Console (right button -> Stop).
In general to shutdown the SAP System we first:
1. Shutdown The Dialog Instance. (SAP Management Console)
2. Shutdown The Central Instance. (SAP Management Console)
3. Shutdown Oracle (BR*Tools).
4. Stop SAP and Oracle Services.
Maybe is more a problem of Windows Memory Management.....
Best Regards,
Erick ILarraza -
Hi All,
FYI, my SAP PRD running on 3 tier SAP server configuration. Yesterday, after stop the instances, i start the services.
So far 2 servers instances (CI & DI) can be started, but 1 DI server could not be started.I had restart the dialog instance server but the the SAP still can't start.

May i know why the dialog instance is down. And I dont know what should i do now. Need your advice.
Thank You
regards,
Anang78Hi,
Some memory parameter must have been changed, which results ERROR_NO_SYSTEM_RESOURCES Messages.
Backup the current DI Instance profile and rename old version of DI Profile (which is having .BAK extension).
Check the "TIME STAMP" when DI instance was working fine to select the backup version of the profile.
Then try again to start the DI Instance and post the log again.
Later you can analyse the system load and tune the parameters accordingly...
If requred, increase the Physical Memory.
Regards.
