Elements 8 to CS5

Can I start with elements 8 and graduate to CS5 ? Do they work similar?

Yes, they are similar. Photoshop Elements is basically a limited edition of Photoshop in that it has a selection of the commands and tools that are available in Photoshop. It's actually a little better than a limited edition as Elements also comes with some handy quick fix tools and options that aren't in Photoshop. Elements has more icons and some view it as an easier user interface.
The native commands are the same in both versions. I say native because in Photoshop you can change the shortcuts to whatever you want. (I love being able to set up my own shortcuts. I also love being able to write my own actions (macros) which as with the shortcuts you can't do in Elements.)
If you are on a Mac, Elements comes with Bridge which is part of Photoshop CS5. If you are on a PC, Elements comes with an Organizer that works like an Album. Some prefer the Organizer to Bridge. I was never an Organizer fan so can't really give an unbiased opinion on that. Edit: It also comes with creative templates for like greeting cards, calendars and is home to several quick fixes.
Keep in mind CS5 needs a fairly high end machine...especially if you get the Extended version. You'll want to look at the feature list if you upgrade to CS5 to see if the extra $ is worth going that route or not as it comes in Standard and Extended versions. None of the extended features are in Elements.
There are also a whole list of things Elements can't do that Photoshop can. There are things Photoshop can do faster/easier likewise there are some things that are faster/easier in Elements.
Is there something specific you want to do with Elements or Photoshop?

  • Elements to CS5 upgrade procedure

    I've been searching around the adobe website, but I cannot find an answer yet.
    I'm thinking of upgrading from photoshop elements to photoshop cs5.  My question is, what is the upgrade proceedure like?
    I don't think I have elements installed anymore, maybe because it's not compatible with my win7 x64.
    Do I have to install elements, then run the cs5 installer?
    Will the cs5 upgrade read the old elements cd during install?
    Can I just input my elements serial number during the cs5 install?
    Can I just use the cs5 cd without proof of ownership of elements?
    In summary, how does the elements to cs5 upgrade process work, and what proof of ownership do I need to provide?

    So  , if you have Licensed Photoshop Elements version 6, 7 or 8 then you are eligible for upgrading it to Photoshop CS5 or Photoshop CS5 extended depending upon your choice.
    You dont need to install Elements again in order to Upgrade , just buy Upgrade serial number by choosing the options as shown in image. During install it will ask for Qualifying serial number of Elements. In the options that are given, select your  version and enter its serial number. Thats it , you will successfully upgrade to Photoshop then.

  • Moving plug-ins from Elements to CS5

    Hello,
    I just installed CS5 and have been using Elements 8, i had purchased the TopazLabs plug in package a few weeks ago and now i want them to work in my Photoshop CS5.  Can someone please tell me the steps to take to move or copy them into CS5, i am not 100% sure where they go.  I did see the plug in folder in CS5 in my "program file (x86) >Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CS5>Plug-Ins.  Is that the right path? Also, do i just dump the files in one by one or do they go into a specific folder once i am in the plig in folder itself.  I have 12 differen  folders within the Plug in file/folder.  I need some reassurance to make sure i am doing it correctly.  I dont want to mess anything up with CS5.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Thank you very,very much for helping me out, i didnt even think about the fact that Elements plug ins may not even work with Photoshop jCS5 so thanks for setting me straight on that.  I really want those plug ins but ever since i installed CS5 i cant get my Photoshop Elements 8 program open, it opens and a split second later it shuts down  and have no idea why.  I was using Elememts that day that i installed CS5 so i know it worked prior to the install of cs5.  I am using windows 7 64bit.  I put a phone call into Adobe who said they would call me back in 8 min and that was at least 2 hrs ago.  I am not to computer literate so i dont dare start messing with files until i get instructions from someone who does know what there doing.
    Also, in response to the question about how i got the Topaz plug ins into Elements, well, i installed like normal and then had to copy the file into the Elements folder, it worked perfectly, that was Topaz instructed people to do if they didnt show up when you ran the auto installer.  I will get ahold of topaz and see if there is anything I can do about "exchanging' my elements serial number for a CS serial number, its worth a try anyway becasue i just bought them and I love what they do.
    thanks again to all of you who helped me out on this issue.

  • Upgrade from Elements to CS5

    Is it possible to upgrade, with a discount, from Elements 9 to Photoshop CS5?

    Not anymore, but you should sometimes be able to upgrade to CS6.
    I don't think they've offered it yet, though, this cycle.

  • Elements or CS5?

    I've been reading a lot of online tutorials intended for the design of web sites and of course most are geared toward full blown Photoshop.  I currently use Elements 5 and would like to upgrade so my question is should I go to CS5 or PSE8?  Thank You.

    First off, I don't understand why many people decide to compare PSE to PSCS, they're really two diferent things. One is a cataloging application with editing functionality, the other is an editor with very minimal cataloging ability (Bridge).
    IMO you already have the last version of PSE that was worth anything (PSE5). The organizer from PSE-6 to PSE-8 is garbage. It's basic design function is to piss you off to the point where you'll buy "Adobe Lightroom". It's supposedly 16 bit capable, yet it takes 10 times as long as PSE-5 does to generate even 8 bit thumbnails.
    IMO, the only justification for having PSE-6-7 or 8 is to deal with raw camera files which are 16 bit...!
    PSE-8's organizer doesn't expire after the trial, so you can have that segment of the program for nothing. Then after you figure out if PSE-8's editor will do the tasks you have in mind, you can either buy PSCS-5 or pay for PSE-8.
    That said, I've considered downloading PSE-8 because it supposedly runs under Windows 7. But after dealing with PSE-7 in XP and Win 7, I simply don't want it on my computer.

  • Drag to PS elements to CS5 Illustrator

    Doesn't work. The last Illy I used was 7 and drag images to PS 6 and back worked. Now this has changed, need to use copy paste. In the past opened both programs on the screen and dragged with mouse and control button. Adobe prices shot up and no books, no clip art, the programs haven't changed that much except for some dazzling add-ons.
    Thanks

    One usual action for a not-everything-ok-after-the-upgrade (or before the upgrade) is to do a cleanup on your PSE 3 catalog. Close PSE 4 and start PSE 3, then do a
    - File > Catalog > Recover
    - File > Reconnect > All Missing Files
    - File > Catalog > Recover (yes do it a second time)
    After that completes successfully, close PSE 3, start PSE 4 and do the catalog upgrade again.
    Also some questions -
    - Do all of your photos show OK in the PSE 4 photo well? So that the photos are ok but 90% of the tags are missing?
    - Is the tag present in the tag panel on the right but just missing from the photos? - or are these tags also missing from the tag panel on the left?
    - In PSE 3, are you using the default catalog name of "My Cataog" or do you have your own specifically named catalog? If not the default name, did you place it in the same folder as the default or in a different folder location?

  • Elements vs. Photoshop CS5

    I am thinking of upgrading from Elements to CS5. I have used Photoshop 6 way back and was very happy with it. I am not crazy about Elements but it was a lot cheaper. Should I make the upgrade? Or is it just the learning curve I have to take into account?Fr
    An advice would be appreciated

    A.1) Click File >>Back Up catalog to CD DVD or Hard Drive.
    1b) You can convert a PSE catalog in CS5 but works best with photos only. Project files like slideshows and videos might cause the conversion to stall.
    1c) Premier Pro has it’s own media browser.
    2)There are no physical copies. The Organizer only makes links to the folders on your computer.
    B.1)AE is fully integrated in CS5.5 Production Premium but I’m not sure if it works on a stand alone basis, although I don’t see why not.
    1b) Sorry don’t know any plug-ins to recommend but 32 bit plug-in's will not work with AE.
    2) You would need to move plug-ins manually.
    3) Just more of it. In PS CS5 you get great things like the pen/paths tool and tone curves. With Premier pro you ideally need a fast 64 bit system with high end GPU to take full advantage of the mercury Playback Engine.
    Try adobe TV for all sorts of video tutorials for the various products.
    Good luck.

  • Complete uninstall of Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 9 from Windows 7 64 bit

    I purchased Photoshop Elements 11 and Primere Elements 11.  I am manually uninstalling Photoshop and Primere Elements 9 before installing ver 11.
    I went through the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs to do this.  The process completed, but the following problems remain:
    1. Entries for Photoshop Elements 9 and Primere Elements 9 are still in the list in CP - Add/Remove Programs.  Re-uninstalling from there brings up Windows Installer msg " This action is valid for products that are currentlly installed"
    2. Entries for Photoshop Elements 9 and Primere Elements 9 are still in the Start Button - All Programs.
    3. The entries for the uninstalled programs are not listed at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
    3. I could delete the folders pertaining to Photoshop Elements 9 from where the files were installed originally.  However, when I try to do that I get a msg saying that I need permission from SYSTEM to do that and the delete fails.
    A gazillion folders and files remain in D:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 9
    4. The only entries in Services.msc for Adobe are for Acrobat Update Service and Flash Player Update Service.
    So, obviously, the uninstall did not complete properly.
    How do I manually remove all traces of Photoshop Elements 9 and Primere Elements 9 from my system?  Does Adobe have any automated tool to do this?
    Thanks.
    Aloke Prasad

    There is a "clean script" for CS products that you might look at, but I have NO idea if it works for Elements products

  • Using Elements with iPhoto

    Dear Friends,
    What is the best way to help a Mac user who has downloaded images into iPhoto but wants to adjust them in Elements (or CS5)?
    He has asked if he can move an event over to work in Photoshop, or can he only open one image at a time?
    Is there  way to set iPhoto so that images automatically open in Photoshop?
    Thanks for your advice.

  • INDD CS5.5 freezes when trying to export IDML

    Hi there,
    For a couple of days I'm trying to Export a 23.2MB INDD file in IDML, but after a few seconds it freezes:
    Adobe InDisign CS5.5 has stopped working
    A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
    Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is
    available.
    I have INDD 7.5.1 running on Windows 7; 64bit.
    Any suggestions?

    I have tried to break up the file and export two pages a time, but in vain.
    Create a new document and go to the Pages panel and choose Move Pages and move your pages to the new document.
    See if that clears it up. If not, try a single page. If it works, when you can narrow to the problem.
    Is there a possibility to cut and past INDD CS5.5 to INDD CS4 ?
    Actually, yes. Select the page elements in CS5 and Export to a Snippet (in fact, you might even be able to drag and drop to CS4...).

  • Getting XML Elements

    I am returning some XML elements(for example Figure elements) using Xpath in Javascript, which is assingned to one object in VB.net. There is no problem when i am getting(those elements) from CS5.5 Document but while i am getting from CS3 document it shows COM Object error. My code is as follows.
            SerializedObject.IApplication = CreateObject("InDesign.Application.CS3")
            Dim a As Object = SerializedObject.IApplication.DoScript("C:\Documents and Settings\pg4007\Desktop\scripts\Find_Float_Element.jsx", InDesign.idScriptLanguage.idJavascript, )
    it shows,
    Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
    Plz help me.

    The code creates two paragraph styles namely Element_A_01 and Element_B_02. These two are created for the immediate child nodes of the Workbook node. Now it seems that you are trying to create pstyles for all the nodes in the XML, which in your case would still be these two as Element_A_01 has a child node that is also named Element_A_01 and the same is the case for Element_B_02.
    If i get your point right then you need to create 4 pstyles if all the nodes have different names, but that is not working. For this you will have to recursively traverse each node that you get from the code xes[n].
    The code be something like this
    function main() {
      var xes, n, doc, ps, xe;
      if ( !app.documents.length ) return;
      doc = app.activeDocument;
      xes = doc.xmlElements[0].xmlElements; //This gives the immediate child nodes of the Workbook node, hence the length in the next statement is 2
      n = xes.length;
      while ( n-- ) {
      xe = xes[n];   //Here you need to recursively traverse the node xe
      //The no of child elements of xe can be obtained as xe.xmlElements.length
      //First element can be obtained by xe.xmlElements[0]
    main();
    Hope this solves the issue

  • I just bought the bamboo create and cannot get cs5 to recognize it.

    It is sketchy working in the sketchbook program and a little sketchy in the Elements but CS5 it won't even move.  I have windows 7 on a 64 bit system.

    If the driver is installed correctly, then Photoshop will recognize it automatically.
    Check for updated drivers from Wacom, or contact Wacom for help with the driver issues.

  • The latest answer from you to me is that my photos are safe and that I should look in a default folder. I have tried to do this but cannot find it.  How do I find the default folder.

    I received your emai stating that my photos are safe and are present in the folder on your computer that you specified when importing them. If you used Photoshop Album Starter Edition to import your files from the camera without changing the default folder, look in this folder.  I have tried looking in the default folder and there is nothing there to help. Some of these photos were scanned in from my Cannon Printer.  Surely if Adobe are requesting me to register and telling me they will send me a code no. that is all that needs to be done.

    How to compare Elements to CS5 or 6?
    Can I upgrade from Elements to CS?
    Is Elements 13 comes in DVD format?
    I'm interested in upgrading my Elements 10 to????
    Your advise please?
    I'm so sorry, but in today's world, the support of low cost products through personal contact has become very uncommon.  It simply does not pay to sell a product for $50 or $100 and then pay people to sit in cubicles to talk on the phone that may cost $50 or $100 an hour.
    That said, I'll try to help for free!
    CS5, CS5.5 and CS6 are products from the past that, as far as I know are not being updated or maintained.  Adobe has replaced them with the "Creative Cloud" or "CC".  So, if you want a current version of "Premier CC", you "rent" it for $20 a month.  For $50 a month, you can rent everything Adobe makes for photogrphers, videographers, designers and graphic artists.
    If "upgrade" means "get a cheaper price", no.
    The easiest way to buy the DVD version of Elements 13 is to order it from a major retailer like B&H Photo or Amazon.  I've checked and both have it.   The cheapest way to buy it is to wait for holiday season pricing.

  • No Video in playback

    I am new to the Adobe line and right now, I am currently using the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements 9 CS5. The first day I used it, it was great and everything worked fine, but now when I play back the timeline, my pictures will not show up, I have no problems with the video clips. I have done some experimenting with it and found out that when I do not render the pictures they show up, any help here? I have no problems with audio either.
    My system is:
    Win 7 Pro 32Bit
    4GB of RAM (3.25 usuable)
    AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 Processor (3GHz)
    nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
    40GB HDD
    Secondary 1TB HDD
    I have reinstalled it, changed format of the pictures, and reinstalled the videorenderer.dll file. Remember, I only problem with the pictures showing up in playback, the video clips/audio are perfectly fine.
    I'm not sure what else you'll need. Please help :'(

    Sorry, got a little busy...
    Yes, whenever I render anything, i may as well not have anything on the timeline.
    Yes, I have reinstalled the drivers for the video card and same result.
    No, I have a 1TB drive that Im editing off of. The 40GB HDD is just for the OS.

  • Lightroom 4 help

    When I press Control Z, instead of undo, I get a cross processed image.  Several other keyboard keys apply weird settings to my images.
    This is happening with the latest LR4 update I think.  Can I restore to previous version or fix this issue?

    Thanks CSS Simon. I also found that if you chose the Help option, "Lightroom Online", there is a search window at the top of the page. Why they make you go through that trouble is odd. Why didn't they just carry over the same procedure that is in all the other Adobe products like Elements and CS5?
    I posted another question with which you might be able to help. The "Edit in..." option doesn't seem to work with the "Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments" selection. Any clues?
    Thanks again,
