EMac  Error Code: Post 16/2048 DIMM0/J1600

I had a power failure while using my computer. Since then the computer has been running very erratic. It wouldn't start up and it didn't recognize my external HD which I have been using since I bought the computer. I erased the HD, then I installed the Restore Disk 10.1. Then I installed 10.2. Then I reinstalled 10.4 and did all of the software updates. Its still running crazy. But it did mount my external HD which I was able to copy files to a DVD disk. I ran disk utility to verify the disk it said the disk was damaged. I ran Disk Repair from the 10.4 install disk. It said disk couldn't be repaired. I ran Disk Warrior and rebuilt the directory. I ran the Disk Utility and verify disk. It said disk was ok. I had a hard time getting Disk Warrior to run. It kept hanging up or step 6 (rebuilding an optimized directory) but I finally got i t to run. In the meantime I can't mount my external HD. I checked my system profile under diagnostics it said:
Failed
Failure Type: memory
Memory slot: DIMM0/J1600
I then checked the memory info and it said:
DIMM0/J1600 256 MB SDRAM PC133U-333 OK
DIMM0/J1601 128 MB SDRAM PC133U-333 OK
If the diagnostics said their was a memory problem why does the memory info say the memory is OK? I also ran Apple Hardware Test prior to reinstalling OS. The results said:
Error Code: Post 16/2048 DIMM0/J1600 - but everything else passed and this message was at the bottom of the result page.
My question is if I replace the DIMM0/J1600 256 mb memory stick even though the system profiler says its OK will that solve my problem. Thanks for any help that can e given - Frank

Mm.
When you pulled the RAM out - did you try pulling both out, or just 1?
Reason being, maybe it's the RAM... but maybe it's the RAM slot that's at fault.
In terms of cost effectiveness, eBay is basically the best option for RAM (assuming you are comfortable buying from there). If you buy from a RAM dealer/computer store you'll pay a fair bit more.
Another option would be computer markets in your area (if there are any). Check Apple's website for the specifications that your model eMac needs.
If it is the RAM slot itself, then new RAM wont help - but you could then look at re-selling the new RAM and recovering your costs, before buying a new computer.

If you open up the machine and look, I suspect you will see that the slot is NOT empty.  It is failing the power on self test, so the machine is not using it.
You can try opening the cover and then removing and reseating the memory. This might work, but probably not.
Other world computing is an excellent source for RAM and other mac upgrades.

I recommend looking over there, and adding some more memory is always a good idea IMO.

It would appear that you have a problem with one of your ram chips. Try changing the chips and run the test again. See HERE. This is the Aluminum Powerbook forum are and you might get more expert help on your G5 Dual over in that forum area. Never, never lose your OS installer CD/DVD. That should be in the vault. You may try to contact AppleCare to see if they can help you get another one.

  • What is error code post/0/2048?

2005 G5 20" iMac. Bought from apple with two 1 gb ram cards. (One Samsung, one ZK: I wonder why apple doesn't send matched pairs of ram...?) System Profiler always read these two ram cards as two single 1gb cards: one in each of my two slots.  Now system profiler reads 512mb in each of the two slots. I swapped the two 1gb cards and put them in the slot the other came out of and the computer would not start. Just went  bong, bong, bong bong. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated ,

Did you return them to their original slots, and try a reset of the PRAM?
And/or also see if a reset of power management controller does anything.
It is possible that some aspect of the logic board has failed, so as to
no longer correctly recognize the RAM. How long has it been since
the PRAM or clock battery has been replaced? Some start issues
occur when the battery goes dead.
There could be a problem elsewhere in the computer, but without a way
to test the RAM separate from the G5 iMac, that is a continuing question.
Did you test the computer with an Apple Hardware Test?
May not work without functional RAM, if they're at fault.
If a reseller upgraded the RAM after original build, to a higher capacity,
they may have put two equal spec RAM chips inside, not same maker.
So if they've been working several years w/o issue until now, they may
not be the cause of the symptom. But they could be.
The original RAM chips may have a warranty (samsung would) so that
aspect of inconvenience could get you replacement part(s) if they're bad.
Usually three-startup beeps means bad RAM... You indicate Four-beeps.
    {Three beeps would be an easier fix: try other memory chips}

If the Mac were not so old, a visit to an Apple Store genius may help. Yet
now, to talk to a Specialist at an Apple Store or an independent authorized
Apple service expert may be of help. Whether or not it's worth shop time.
If a genius appointment and diagnostic could help discover cause of error,
to see if an Apple Store with Genius bar near you will talk to you about it
may be at least some momentum. Not sure if a power supply or other failed
component (capacitors?) may affect how this architecture reacts.

  • New intern. drive - error code post/0/2048/s0dimm0/j25lower

I replaced my broken harddive and loaded the startup disks successfully. Then my lovely wife asked me why I didn't load her new Macbook pro(Leopard) startup disks instead...didn't know it was illegal...however here I am re-loading the G4 disk but get the error above, the extended tests pass, is there anything I can do besides buying another laptop?

Hi again, mcquitty. You shouldn't even consider spending $500-1000 to repair your Powerbook. Its market value in good working order is well under $1000 and possibly under $500 now, depending on exactly which model you have. So you might be able to replace it with an equivalent used Powerbook in working condition for less than repairing it would cost, and whatever you invest to fix it isn't going to be recoverable on resale if you do repair it. If you want it repaired, have Wegener repair the RAM slot on your existing logic board for $250.
Test each RAM module in the upper slot, with the lower slot empty, by trying to start up from your Mac OS X 10.3 installer CD or DVD. If you are able to do so, open Disk Utility from the Installer menu and format your hard drive according to Kappy's instructions. Then install Panther. You are now out of the woods with respect to the hard drive problem.
If you can't start the machine with either RAM module in the upper slot, then retiring the PB may be the best option. For $999 you can buy a brand-new MacBook that will run rings around the PB.

    Has anyone seen this code?
I appreciate any info on this
    Sincerely,

    Asher
    thanks for responding!
It reassured the decision I made last week.
I had just installed 1GB of Ram and sometimes it showed up in the About this computer and sometimes it didn't.
SO I took it back exchanged it for another brand, installed it and ran the hardware check, no problems and my iBook recognizes it!
    Thanks again

  • What is error code post/16/2112

Hi, I have just run the Apple hardware check disc as I am having some problems with my G4 DA.
It reported a bad RAM stick (Kingston VRAM 512mb) so I removed it and the problem seems to have gone away, I ran Hardware disc again a couple of times to check everything and it comes back with the error code post/16/2112.... what does this mean?
Also, any thoughts why the RAM may have failed in the first place?
    Thanks....

Thanks Thomas, I only have the keyboard and mouse and screen attatched at the moment, it has a USB2 expansion card and a 933mhz processor, other than that it is pretty much standard old G4... Could it be the Graphics card... I have been having trouble with my apple studio display, the card is a Rage Pro 128 with the ADC connector... any thoughts?
    Thanks again...

  • Error code post/16/64?

I've been having recurring problems with my G4.
    Symptoms:
2nd internal hard drive warning such as prompting an error message of 'you must initialize, ignore, eject' then I re-boot, other times a prohibit sign, spinning rainbows, kernel panics. It's a mess.
This only happens on start up after shutting down for the night. But I think I've made things worse
I ran suggested back-ups, PRAM resets, ran cocktail, tried disk utility from start up, ran disk warrior from start up, it found some file errors, cleaned them up. Cloned my system using Superduper, backed the hd up on a NewerTech.
Next day, start up issues again.
I ran memtest, and that found nothing. Start up from install disc, ran disk utility, everything's passing, SMART status is verified.
But it is still not operating correctly. I still have start up issues.
This has been going on for at least a week.
I ran AHT twice. The first time all tests passed. I didn't believe it.
So I ran it again and I received the following:
error detection at the logic board:
error code: scc_/1/5 (I think this is a non-apple board warning)
    error code: post/16/64.
    What?
My internal HD (original) is running at 85% (60g)
My second internal is 120g partitioned with mostly back-ups (not the only back up) and documents.
Thank you to all the folks who've generously posted in the past and thank you in advance for the one that catches this.

The POST/16/64 points to an error on your processor board, bad cache memory. I had this same error, still have the processor on a shelf actually, and it took me months to find the code translation.
Apple says for a POST/16/xx error
    1. replace processor board
    2. replace main logic board
I don't know if there is a heat issue that causes this, but, several cases that I have heard of had systems that ran very hot.
A fellow in Singapore mentioned that he had the same error and believes that the heat causes the external cache chips on the 7455 processor board to loosen(I think your Gigadesigns is a 7447 based chip). He stated that he heated his chips and resolved the error:
"The cache are DDR type samsung BGA chips. This is most difficult as both sits directly opp each other. The only way I think is to heat the chip on 1 side below 220degC(removal at 350degC and soldering in at 300degC). Best if you can get a heater blower and blow at the small gap bet chip and processor board, very tiny clearance, less than 1mm. You can give it a try for the time being, on the chip itself though not the most ideal."
If there are other numbers at the end, ie POST/16/xx yyyy then it is likely a RAM problem or RAM slot problem
    1. reseat DIMMs
    2. replace DIMMS
    3. replace main logic board
Hope this helps, I ended up replacing my processor and as I stated before still have the originalon a shelf. I may try the heat trick one day though.

  • Error Code Post/64/0

I have just had my logic board replaced (unit is only 18 months old) and I keep getting kernel panics. I ran the hardware diagnostics and got an error on startup post/64/0. I then ran the extended test and everything checks out. I am running OS X 10.4.5 on a Dual 1.8Ghz (Model M 9454LL/A) with 768MB RAM, 256MB original and 512MB Samsung . I have tried removing and replacing RAM but same problem. The problem is sporadic and occurs in no specific situation. Any help would be appreciated.

  • What do Apple Hardware Test Error Codes indicate?

I recently installed new 1GB memory modules in both slots. When running the Apple Hardware Test, I got the following error code:
    post/0/2048 S0DIMM0/J20STANDARD
Does anybody knows what this means? Up in the Test Results Box, it said Memory passed.
Do I have a problem or not?

I've had little luck finding a compilation of those AHT codes and their meaning. In your case, "post" is probably "power-on self test," the routine that all Macs run at startup to check for problems.
2048 is the total RAM qty in MB.
J20STANDARD is the logical name of one of the RAM slots.
Run System Profiler and see what it shows for when you select "Memory" from the left-hand pane. On my 1Ghz 17" PowerBook, Profiler shows one slot as J20STANDARD and the other as J23REVERSED and it runs fine. Profiler will tell you if the modules are matched for speed and CAS latency.

    SAP Note Number: 1179405
Error -5002 when trying to copy a document with Sales BOM
In order to create the delivery via the DI, you need to set the oDoc.Lines.BaseLine value to the LineNum value from the RDR1 table (in the above example you should enter the value 2).
we set oDoc.Lines.BaseLine=0 before starting the lines loop. This has resolved the issue.
This note was really helpful and it was found in another query.

    Hi Thomas,
You can get the corresponding error description by code:
      oCompany.GetLastErrorDescription
    Code example:

  • Keep getting error code 2048 when trying to open wmv files, says realplayer cannot open with the installed version of Quicktime, any suggestions?

Keep getting error code 2048 when trying to open wmv files, says realplayer cannot open with the installed version of Quicktime, any suggestions?

wmv is a Windows Media format.  I don't know why Realplayer is coming into it since that deals primarily with Real format files and maybe a few generic formats.
    You need
    Free Flip4mac QuickTime player components - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences.  Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.
or play the files with VLC
VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.
While you're at it you might install:
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.
Perian doen't do WMV but it's handy to get many things to play in Quicktime.
Note, if these are protected WMV, nothing on a Mac will play those (unless you also have Windows installed).
