Email being received but not sent

all of a sudden, my email stops sending (yet still receives). i get the following error message
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail Preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator."
my email provider claims this is an Apple issue - having deleted and recreated email accounts
the provider is blueyonder.co.uk
ive tried different ports but they dont work either.

How do you send them, presumably if you are complaining that they send OK with webmail you are using an email client, if so which one?
What operating system does your computer use?
Which email system are you on. Is it BTYahoo or BTMail? If you are not sure use this link.

• Email gets queued, but not sent until I login to my account on the server.

This is very strange. Let me explain.
1. Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 running on an iMac.
2. I have the Mail Service running on the server. I can receive emails without problems.
3. Using my Snow Leopard Server email account, I attempt to send an email to another account (e.g. a mac.com email account).
4a. If I am actively logged into my Snow Leopard Server account *on the iMac* (e.g. via VNC, as long as my desktop is active), the email will arrive successfully. Here are the mail.log messages:

I'm very much at a loss here. It's as if the act of logging out (or fast user switching to the Login Window) suspends some process that is required for my email to process. But .... why?
Any ideas? Any additional information I can provide to help figure this out? Fwiw, I used to run Tiger Server (never tried Leopard Server) and never had this problem.
Rob

Looks to me like the anti-virus scanner, amavis. The clue is the line:
postfix/smtp[69038]: 942814AD55B: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1\[127.0.0.1\]:10024, delay=0.25, delays=0.1/0.01/0/0.14, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as C611B4AD568)
where the 10024 is the default port that Amavis runs on. Postfix is configured to pass mail through this port, and queues the mail until Amavis is available.
My guess, therefore, is that Amavis is set to run under your account rather than under the system, which is why it only runs when you're logged in. Off hand I have no idea how you managed this and that makes it hard to work out how to fix it. I'd start by looking for org.amavis.amavisd.plist in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/LaunchDaemons and ~/Library/LaunchDaemons (it should be in the former, but if its in the latter that could explain it.

• My o2 email will receive, but not send on my ipad

My o2 email will receive, but not send. I've got other email accounts on the ipad & they all work OK. The o2 mail account used to work properly, but I needed to remove the account & since I've put it back on, it won't work on my ipad. Works ok on android mobile phone. I've checked the settings & spoken to o2, but they couldn't solve! It may be since I've joined the cloud? Any advice, gratefully received. Thanks.

Recheck the settings once again. There is something wrong. And it seems to happen to O2 people with some regularity. Google o2 mail settings and you will get a page with the details. Pay close attention to the port setting, you may need to change it on the pad, and that may be the problem.

• Email will receive but not send after installing os7 on iPhone 4S

Email will receive but not send after installing os7 on iPhone 4S. Checked all settings against iPad and second 4s phone and they appear identical. Other devices work fine.

Thanks Spaidr,
That was part of it. I did an end-around by setting up an alternate outgoing (send) server which was the same as the primary, identical settings, name, password. I deselected the primary and used only the secondary. Reboot as you suggested and Voila! Something must have been corrupted in the primary.
Thanks and hope this helps others.

• Exchange Server 2007 shows email as "Receive" but not "Deliver"

Hi Guys
We have Exchange Server 2007 inside of a SBS 2008 set up.
One specific email from a regular sender wasn't received by the recipient. The recipient is used to receiving messages from this sender and the email is not hiding within Outlook.
Exchange 2007 mail tracker shows the email was received, but that's it. Nothing has happened to the email after that. Normally we'd see a "Deliver" report, or possibly a "Fail", but always something to show the email has been actioned
in some way.
The queues are all empty.
So, this one email has disappeared into the ether of Exchange! So far as I can see, this is the only email with only a "Receive" notification. All others have something else immediately following the Receive.
The Server has GFI anti-spam installed, but that hasn't seen the email either, because emails are collected by Exchange before being passed to GFI. In this instance it hasn't been passed, or returned to the sender as undeliverable. It just seems
to have been eaten.
Would anyone have any sensible suggestions on where to start kicking this email back into life?

Hi Simon
Apologies for the late response, but I only get to this client once a month.
1. Did the sender get NDR? ~ No
2. Let the receiver check the email via OWA and see
whether the email is available. ~ Still not available
3. Use MFCMAPI to check the user mailbox, can you
find the missing email? ~ I haven't yet worked out what is MFCMAPI or how to use it to check, but I suspect that as the Exchange email tracker doesn't have any actions after "Receive" that it cannot have sent the email on to the user's mailbox or rejected
the email as non-deliverable.
The client isn't too willing to expend too much effort
/ cost on this issue which does appear to be a one-off glitch, but I am interested in resolving it for myself as I haven't heard of this problem before.
Thanks for the interest,
Michael D

• Icloud email can receive but not send on PC?

With icloud emails on my iphone I can receive and send icloud emails. On my PC I can receive but not always send. When I try to send an icloud email I get this message: "This message cannot be sent at this time"
Thanks,
Frank

I ran into this problem myself while connected via WI-FI last night and it was due to port 25 being blocked by my ISP. I recommend that you set up your Yahoo! e-mail account within iPhone. Go to Settings | Mail | Add Account... Yahoo will be the top choice.
If you want to continue to use Yahoo via POP3/SMTP, then look at this link:

• E-mail can be received but not sent

E-mail has been working fine until a couple of days ago. Now any e-mail sent get's stuck with the clock icon next to it but doesn't send. E-mail can still be received. Any tips?

Hi all. My apologies for the slow response on this issue. After first writing this post and much Googling, I managed to resolve it in a fashion.
Firstly. thanks for your replies.
Allaineem - it was affecting all contacts. I tried to send an e-mail to my work address and personal address with the same result.
Frankm5 - I didn't get as far as looking at the smtp server because after resetting the device and clearing out the text message and e-mail inbox/outbox, it started working again.
The phone itself is used for business purposes and is a shared ''on call phone'. Hundreds of texts/e-mails are sent on a weekly basis but none of the users had cleared it out. There was over 2 months worth of texts and e-mails to 100+ recipients so I think it was just hammering the memory.

• I can't send emails via mail. I can receive but not send. I have set up gmail on mail. Any ideas?

I can't send emails via mail. I can receive but not send. I have set up gmail on mail. Any ideas? No problems with the set up previously to this.

Go to Mail Preferences- Accounts and confirm you are providing Gmail what they require to send and receive mail. And DON'T specify Secure Socket Layer. Some mail accts don't like SSL
Good Luck to you.

• Why can I receive but not send emails

Why can I receive but not send emails on my i pad?

Perhaps the outgoing mail server settings are incorrect or incomplete.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

• I can receive but not send emails with my skynet account - what am I doing wrong ?

I can receive but not send emails with my skynet account - what am I doing wrong ?
I have no problems with my Yahoo account but I can not send emails with my skynet account.
Actually in iPhone :
Outgoing Mail Server > SMTP "relay.skynet.be"
Primary server > Not Configured > Off
Thank you ...

When you set them up, did you set up both the incoming and outgoing email servers separately, and did you enter the correct SMTP server name, and enter your userid and password even though it says "optional"?
Something else to try, if you haven't, is delete the accounts, connect the iPhone to iTunes, on the Info tab check the box to sync mail server settings, then sync. This should duplicate the settings from your computer to your iPhone.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

• 5th gen ipod can receive but not send emails

5th gen ipod can receive but not send emails. I have iPad with same settings and no issues. Yet, I keep getting "cannot send mail" the user name or password for "[email protected]" is incorrect. Please assist. I am not running both accounts simultaneously

See:

Did it work before?
I suspect a error in the settings for the outgoing mail server.

• TS3276 My Mac is able to receive but not to send email

Anyone please help. My Mac is able to receive but not to sen emails. I have tried backing up my emails, deleting my account on outlook and creating a new one, but, I continue having the same problem.

What were the results of taking the pertinent steps in the support article?

• Able to receive but not to send emails

Purchased macbook pro, ipad & iphone at xmas ... experiencing ame problem with all of them.
I can received emails okay via mobile me, yahoo, gmail but 90+% of emails I send are not received by recipient and I get bounce back SMTP error messages. (I did manage to send emails to a couple of individuals who have AOL and BT internet accounts but others failed).
Have contacted Apple Support but so far no solution found by them .... I have seen numerous threads on internet with others who appear to have same issue but not sure if there are any fixes. The Apple support person indicated that many of the internet service providers seemed to be blocking the messages from getting through ... I have also read that this may be as a result of going through an intermediate (i.e. Apple Mail) ... although even when I try the old approach of sending direct from yahoo and gmail websites ... these are now failing as well.
I only started experiencing these problems after changing to apple products in recent weeks ... HELP!!

I suddenly had the same issue Saturday: my gmail was receiving but not sending. This was true whether via WiFi or 3G.
I troubleshot it with Apple. It happened whether my gmail account was set up as "gmail" in iPhone mail setup, or whether (as I had always had it) set up using Exchange (even though I don't connect through an Exchange server). We reset the network settings, that did not help. Then, we set up Apple Support's dummy Yahoo account. That worked fine. Then we used their dummy gmail account. That worked fine. So it seemed to be something at the level of my particular account.
I ran out of time to troubleshoot, and now, strangely, today it is working fine again. I am guessing something on the Google end but who knows. Or maybe some NSA program.
