Empty fields in a fillable PDF

Hi all,
We are a company that relies heavilly on fillable PDF files. We create them in LiveCycle ES8.2 and distribute them to our students all over the world.
Needless to say those students use a wide variety of hardware, ranging from MAC's with different OSx's to Windows computers with XP, Vista or 7.
Students fill out these forms, often tests and assignments, save a copy and upload it to our site.
Lately we are experiencing problems that fields in our fillable PDF's are empty when we receive the file.
Ofcourse, it sometimes happens that a student uploads the wrong (empty) file, but when multple students give us an empty PDF within a one-day timeframe and are certain they filled it out correctly, it might be something we are missing.
We noticed that it might have something to do with embedded fonts or their subsets, but this is giving us and our students a big headache.
We can't pinpoint the problem any further. Is it something we are missing in de PDF design process or is it a user-related issue? And if so, how can they solve it?
Advice or sollutions are greatly appreciated!
Greets,
Martijn

I asked bacause the Preview application on the Mac is known to corrupt fields when a form is saved, resulting in the field contents not being vis
ible. The PDF Producer will show something like what I posted earlier in such cases. Preview is the default PDF viewer for a majority of Mac users. But now that I think about it, I don't believe Preview supports XFA forms at all.
If I were in your position, I'd try contacting the folks who sent in the problem files and ask them what PDF viewer they're using, and confirm that they indeed completed AND saved the form and sent in the modified form.

  • How does one change a "rollover" value in a text field of a fillable PDF?

I have a fillable PDF, and the values displayed when rolling the pointer over a fillable text field are showing some strange values.  I inherited this form from someone who is no longer with the company.  I need to be able to change the values but can't figure out how.  I'm new to LiveCycle so any help is greatly appreciated.

When you click on the field, right click to properties.  If the tab isn't there then go to the top toolbar, click on Window and it should appear in the list there.  Once you click on it in the Window menu it will appear as a tab on your properties box.

  • Extracting all form fields from a fillable pdf

Is there any way of extracting/exporting/copying all form fields from a pdf? Meaning, the wordings from all the fields so I can pass it along to another individual to use for cross referencing, since they are not able to see all the various form fields within the split screen?
    Thanks!!!

The person that needs this is looking for the entire running list of all the fillable field names within the pdf. Any kind of document that I can deliver them in, I am willing to take suggestions.
Right now, what I was thinking of doing was having the screen split between the pdf and the listing of field names in the sidebar and taking screen captures as I scroll down the pdf and corresponding field names in the sidebar until I got all pages.
Is there an email address I could contact you at to discuss offline? I have an example I could send you but don't want posted online.
    Thanks!

I guess you are referring to "Tool Tip" you can update those in "Accessibility" Pallet...in designer you would access this by Shift+F6.

  • How to change the font and size in the fillable field of an encrypted PDF file?

    hi!
I’d like to change the font and size in the fillable field of an encrypted PDF file I-485 from www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-485.pdf
I’m using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 in Windows XP. I firstly tried Adobe LiveCycle Designer, but the I-485 file requires password to be opened, which I don’t know.
Then I tried to print it to a PDF file, and use the Typewriter tool to fill in the form. But got error message while printing it to PDF file:
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
The I-485 file can be exported to unencrypted postscript file, but got the same error message while trying to open the ps file.
I don’t know much about pdf file, can anyone please help?
    Thanks a lot!

Ask the creator of the file for a unprotected version.

I have developed a fillable pdf in Adobe Acrobat Professional X but when I try to use the Airprint feature the form print minus the field data, have anyone been able to resolve this issue?

    Hi,
I had a similar problem and found help for it. Go to the "Advanced" menu and select Extend features in Adobe Reader. That will enable rights which may resolve your problem. If that doesn't work, there is a really helpful guy in here, Robert Levine. You may want to ask him directly.
    Good Luck

I've created a fillable PDF document in XI Pro. I need to change the body of the document and create a new fillable PDF document. When I do that it won't let me create a new PDF. It keeps saying "no new  fields recognized. What can I do to redo my document with the changes in the text, but no changes in the fillable fields?

You start with a source / authoring file for the "static" content (e.g., Name, Last:). Say this is an MS Word file.
    You master the "static" content..
You keep this authoring file and have a backup of this file.
You output a PDF and use Acrobat to build and fine tune the "form" (form = the form fields, not the "static" content).
The authoring file  and output PDF (with form fields) gives you "rev 00".
Now, you must change something in the "static" content.
Open the authoring file and save as to a new version (e.g., "wordfile_v00"  becomes "wordfile_v01).
    Output this to "pdffile_v01".
Use Acrobat to open the PDF form file "pdffile_v00". Save As to a new file name ("pdffile_v00update").
Using Acrobat XI Pro the click-path Tools - Pages - Replace lets you replace a page or pages of "pdffile_v00update" with a page or pages from "pdffile_v01".
This replaces the "static" PDF page content and does not affect the form fields on the page.
(you may have to adjust position of form fields)
Save "pdffile_v00update" to "pdffile_v01" to reflect the revised status of the PDF form file.
    Be well...

  • Errors and fields disapering in a fillable PDF file

I don't know much about Acrobat so forgive me if the problem below is just a lack of proper training and not a real problem but this is my issue:
I have fillable PDF forms with digital signature fields on SharePoint 2010. People are filling it out and adding signatures (using Reader or Pro). For the most part everything works fine. Sometimes however some PDF files are having the following issues:
There is an error message on open: This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document.
Some fields that were previously populated disappear (not just the value, the entire field).
When I try to print it I get the message: The Document could not be printed. And when I click ok: There were no pages selected to print
When I go to the signature panel and open the last signed version everything seems to be working OK (fields are there, I can print, no error message).
Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks!

That will be difficult as it contains some sensitive data. Since the last signed version is correct is it possible to revert to that version? I am still trying to find a pattern here but it already happened 3 times. Any idea what can be causing it?

  • Can I create calculated fields using formscentral on a locally created, fillable PDF form?  If so, how?

I am using Acrobat XI Pro to build a fillable PDF form that can be used by customer who have Adobe Reader installed.  I would like to create calculated fields, including the summation of two or more currency fields and the product of a currency and number field.  The procedure for creating these escapes me.  Does anyone have any insight?

    Hi Gilad,
thankyou! - yes it seems though I was using the text tool when I had this problem: When I had created a few fields in the 'form edit' mode I then may later have added some normal 'comment' fields of text in the normal mode to highlight certain aspects on a form - I used the text tool thinking that was the right way in to add or edit text - I can now see I double click with the hand tool to still be able to access any text field I want to. Yay!
Many thanks for your kind assistance - I shall try this method later on a new form I was trying to create and which was giving me grief.
One last thing then: what is that default text field that can't be deleted actually for - why is it there? After all, a 'blank pdf' should surely be a truly blank pdf? Perhaps this is one for mighty Adobe....?
    Kind Regards,
    Pete

  • How to save PDF form without empty fields ?

    Hello,
I try to find how to save PDF forms after a school registration but without empty fields because i have lots of relation in my Form but i haven't.
Is it possible and how ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Are you downloading responses as PDF forms after forms are submitted? If so, FormsCentral doesn't provide an option to exclude empty fields and you won't be able to save PDF forms without empty fields.
You can use this form to "vote" on popular feature requests, or to add a new one of your own:

  • "Find and Replace" for field names in a fillable PDF

Is it possible to do a "Find and Replace" for the field names in a fillable PDF? For example, I have multiple fields that contain the word "Proposed Insured" as part of the field name and would like to find and replace all of them with "Owner". Is there an easy way to do this?

Not really. Even a script can't just rename a field. It needs to create a
new field on top of the old one, but then you lose all the associated
settings, like validation, calculation, format, keystroke, etc.

  • Acrobat XI Windows 7 - unable to (copy and) paste form fields to a different pdf.

To maintain a consistent appearance and function in the forms I create for various departments, I copy a few form fields  (text, checkboxes) from an unrelated Acrobat PDF. Then I paste those fields into a different PDF document that I am making fillable.
I do this because Acrobat does not allow setting a default for certain attributes when creating form fields, i.e. an unchecked scroll option, a default font other than Helvetica (in Acrobat 8, 9, and X). Plus it is time-saving to copy and paste fields that are the same in another PDF, like name, address, phone. etc.
We just updated to Acrobat XI and Windows 7 and now I cannot paste copied fields onto a different PDF.
Using "replace pages" is not applicable as I am pasting to an entirely different form and copying form fields with the settings I use.
Is this a glitch or is something new that was not in Acrobat 8, 9, and X?
Also, question regarding this forum entry -  http://forums.adobe.com/message/5638333#5638333 - which is somewhat different from my current question.
The PDF creator could not paste copied fields on other pages of the same PDF. Was this ever resolved so that copy and paste worked as it has for the last 3 versions of Acrobat?
    Thanks!
    Joanie

Gilad:  You're right: when the fields are different, such as a checkbox and a text field, and you try to title them the same, Acrobat gives you a message. I received no messages, the field names are not the same or I missed one and Acrobat is no longer messaging about it.
My question is different. Acrobat XI will not let me paste any field copied from a different PDF.  I've been doing that for 5 years in three different versions.  Maybe Acrobat XI has a new process for that, which I could not find in Acrobat help. Maybe it's because all forms now have extended rights automatically in Acrobat XI and there is another method to copy common fields to other PDFs.
Any thoughts about the new Acrobat XI? It's different in many good ways, but different.
    Thanks for your ideas.

  • In creating a fillable PDF in XI Pro, can I insert a table which can be tabbed through?

In creating a fillable PDF in XI Pro, can I insert a table which can be tabbed through?

You're in luck. Create the first field and then right-click it (in Form Edit mode) and select Create Multiple Copies. You'll be able to specify how many copies of the fields to generate, and at what intervals. The nice thing is that although the properties of the new fields will be identical to the source one, they'll each have a unique name, so you'll get an instant "table" of fields.

  • Fillable pdf's returned by clients are readable only one line at a time

We have been emailing fillable pdf questionnaires to our customers for them to complete and return via email.  When some of them have come
back, they are only viewable one line at a time, we need to highlight the fillable field that the customer completed so we can view their answer.
Does anyone know why this occurs and why it would be isolated to a few cases?  Thanks!
    George

They were probably filled-in and saved with the Preview application on the Mac. For more information and some approaches you can take to correct, see: http://kb2.adobe.com/community/publishing/885/cpsid_88564.html

  • Creating a Fillable PDF with Acrobat Pro 9

Hey there, i've got a problem when trying to create a fillable PDF Document.
I simple want to get a calculation done.
I got Checkboxes and i need a calculation like this:
    For example:
If there is a "x" in the field named checkbox1, then it should go forward and check what number is in the Field named "Hours1"
if its higher than 2, it should put a 0,25 in the field, if higher than 4, put a 0,5 in the field, if higher than 6, put a 0,75 in the field and if higher than 8, put a 1 in the field and if nothing is written in hours1, leave it blank
    Like:
    If checkbox1 > 0 then if hours1 > 2 then 0,25 else if hours1 > 4 then 0,5 else if > 6 then 0,75 else if > 8 then 1 else ""
i used this calculation on excel but now we wanted to send a fillable pdf via email, but the recievers of the email always mix up the calculation, so i wanted to have it already in the pdf and calculating by it own.
i found basic things like field1 + field2  but i just saw that i need javascript to get what i need.
but well, i dont have any idea of JS.
maybe u can give me some links where i can learn it or something else.
iam looking forward to any help i recieve.
thanks for reading and i hope u can help me.

"Automatic Form Recognition" looks for blank areas next to text and assumes the format.
You probably will need to place each individual form and write each script.
You can find articles at Planet PDF and Acrobat Users Community and there a number of books on how to create and program forms.
