Encoding from tape

I have an older JVC video camera that shoots on tape.  I have a lot of old videos I want to import into FCPX.  I bought a new 9pin to firewire 800 cable that attaches to the 800 to thurderbolt adapter.  For some reason I can't get the camera to show up in FCPX or anywhere.  Is there something I need to download to make it work?  I have the new imac, if that helps.

You should need nothing else.
To confirm: The cable is 4 pin to camera and 9 pin to Thunderbolt adapter?
This will work with DV importing.
If not check the cable or ports for damage.

  • Encode ProRes From Tape

    Can I encode from video tape (not from camera) and make ProRes file, both 422 and 4444?  I use to use Final Cut for this but...well, you know.

    What do you mean by "encode from video tape?" Do you mean capture? I think you can, if you have the appropriate hardware, e.g. a third-party capture card, and FCP installed. Obviously, this is only available on the Mac, which I'm assuming you're using since you referred to FCP.
    Or do you mean something else?

  • Different frame rate encoding on tape (24p & 24pa)

    Hi,
    I usually record to tape with my dvx100 using 24pa, but sometimes the quick setup dial was switched accidentally resulting in a different frame encoding, like 24p for example.
    Everything is recorded in 29.97fps on mini-dv, we all know that, making apparently no difference b/w 24p and 24pa.
    But of course, when i'm trying to capture this footage through FCP, i can't always remove the advanced pulldown because there's a few clips that have been recorded with 24p instead of 24pa.
    Questions:
    - How can you detect the different encoding on tape, whether it's 24p or 24pa?
    - Can you get FCP to create a new clip (at least stop) the capture for those sections of the tape where I have something different than 24pa?
    - If nothing like that is possible, how do you solve this problem?
    Thanks!

    the only pulldown pattern that FCP can remove at capture is 24pA (3:2:2:3). Standard 3:2 pulldown can only be reversed using cinema tools. If you open the clip in cinema tools, you'll need to park the playhead on the first frame of the pulldown cadence for it to correctly remove the pulldown. This will create new copies of your clips, which will take up a corresponding amount of space. There is no way for either FCP or CT to reconize the pulldown cadence of standard 3:2 clips, so you'll have to manually find the A frame of the cadence. If you have a huge number of them to do, you may find it quicker to place each clip in a sequence where you can put the A frame of the cadence as the first frame in the sequence. Export these as a batch of reference movies, and you should be able to do a batch inverse telecine on them in Cinema Tools.
    These new clips will no longer match the timecode of your tapes, so if you remove the original 29.97 media, you should at least keep the offline 29.97 clips in your project in case you need to recapture.
    Hope this helps -

  • Recovery of VHD file from tape immediately gives null error, ID 1001, and job fails.

    I am attempting to recover a VHD from tape.   When I finish the recovery wizard and it starts to create the job, I get an immediate popup error with an ID: 1001 and a "More Information" link that goes to a "page not found" on technet.
     There is no actual errror message or other info in the dialog box.  When I click ok, the dialog and recovery wizard disappear, and no job seems to have been created.
    I've seen a couple of other posts about this, but didn't find any solutions.  I did run a tape verification against the recovery point in question, and it completed.  (I don't see where it says passed/failed, just completed.  I assume the
    job would have failed if it found a problem?)
    I've also tried a couple of other recovery points, on different tapes, but am getting the same results.
    Any idea what is going wrong?

    Hi,
    Can you provide DPM version and update rollup version.  Are there any events from MSDPM after the error, if so, can you supply the event details ?
    As a workaround,  you can restore the VHD by going to Management>Tape Library>Right Click on the Tape>select backup set for the data source containing the VHD and then click on the COPY button.  That will restore to
    a network location and you can then copy it to the hyper-v server and replace the VHD manually.
    Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Regards, Mike J. [MSFT]

  • RMAN recovery from tape and disk?

    Hey Guys,
    Here is my scenario: -
    I have Oracle 10g and I am using RMAN to backup to disk and then I use Networker to backup on tapes from disk (retention is set to 30 days on tapes). On RMAN - my retention policy is set to recovery window of 5 days after which it deletes the obsolete backup from disk and updates the control file.
    My Questions:
    1. If I have to recover any datafile or tablespace 20 days ago how can I restore it on Production. Since I am also backing up control files on tapes but my current control file will not have 20 days old information. Is there any way that I can restore my old backup?
    2.How can I test my tape backup which is older than 5 days. In other words how can I restore my database from tape on another server/
    Please suggest.

    If you need to restore the whole database to a point in time that is 20 days old, you "only" need:
    1. to identify the right control file backup
    2. restore this control file backup with Networker
    3. start the instance in mount mode
    4. list required datafiles and archived redo logs backup sets listed in this control file with LIST BACKUP
    5. restore these backup sets with Networker
    6. restore and recover database with RMAN with the right SET UNTIL clause.
    If you need to restore only 1 tablespace, that's Tablespace Point In Time Recovery (TSPITR) and is another story.
    I don't think you can only restore 1 datafile that is 20 days old and leave other datafiles up-to-date (unless there is only 1 datafile in the tablespace and in this case this is TSPITR).

  • How to restore a Rman backup from Tape

    Hi,
    We need to restore the database backup taken through RMAN on 24-JUNE-2013 from tape as this backup is not currently available on disk.
    Can you please help me on the following,
    1) how i can check if the same backup on 24-JUNE-2013 is available on Tape.
    2) If yes how i can restore to Disk.
    Because we need to create a new Clone instance from the backup taken on 24-JUNE-2013.
    We are having 12.1.3 Application on Exalogic and 11.2.0.3 Database on Exadata machine.
    Our support is highly appreciated.

  • Database Restore & Recovery from tape

    Hi Fellows
    I'm about to attempt a recovery from backup tape to a test server, as a 'tape recovery' test. The files I've marked for recovery include (directories including all sub-tree);
    Datafiles directory
    $ORACLE_HOME/sid/ directory where the sid is the database sid
    Control Files
    adump, Bdump, cdump and udump directories
    Archivelogs directory
    Flashrecovery area directory
    Redo logs directory
    initfile and spfile
    With these files recovered (from one point in time), and the dbconsole shut down prior to restore (for the sid) should the database be able to startup afterwards? Is there any other actions I should make? Thanks, David

    Thanks for your responses Alok and Santosh
    I'm pretty sure the files I have selected should be able to recover the database. The recovery, I think is rightly said, can only be done within Oracle. I'll look into a test of RMAN (I know it should be better) recovery once I've tested this as a 'straight from tape' recovery.
    Thanks again, David
    Alok and Santosh
    I thought I'd put this in as 'aftermath' of the attempted recovery;
    I had the server team restore the files stated (basically everything - redo, archivelogs, datafile, controlfiles, init and sp files, even the dump files) - and repalced them into directories made the same as the other server. When I started it, I was able to go into a 'Oracle Suggested' full database recovery, which was successful. I then checked the expdp dump files, 1 taken at the same time of backup as rman - and one directly after the restore), and compared rows - exactly the same. So appears to have worked.
    Many thanks, David

  • Media Encoder From AP-Pro not working

    Hi,
    I'm trying to export a premiere pro file, I go through the "export settings" like normal and then "ok", it goes to "exporting data" but then doesn't go anywhere.
    Normally it should access the "Adobe Media Encoder" but it does nothing. When I try to access "Adobe media encoder from the programs it comes up with the error message:
    "Adobe Media Encoder.exe - Entry Point Not Found" - "The procedure entry point ??0NewHandlerInitializer@ErrorManager@config@@QAE@XZ could not be located in the dynamic link library dvacore.dll".
    So I'm guessing it needs reinstalling but where do I get it from? It is not in the Premiere setup files and it's not on the adobe website, only the updates are.
    I'm using Windows XP and AP-Pro CS4
    Regards,

    Just had the same problem. I have had cs2 cs3 and cs4 on the same PC Windows XP Pro.
    The exact error message as the o.p. was appearing during export from Premier and when opening Encore.
    I was able to resolve this issue after weeks by simply ...
    Close all Adobe programs and restart computer.
    Go to Windows>Control Panel>Adobe Version Cue CS4
    Adobe Version Cue Server window will appear.
    Make sure your firewall is not blocking Version Cue or Adobe Updater.
    Click Updates tab.
    Click "Check for Updates" button.
    Adobe Updater will connect with the update server. Click Details.
    Checkmark Media Encoder and Photoshop Media Encoder.
    Download the latest Adobe Media Encoder updates.
    Im finally encoding right now so Im not stopping to look at the update version, lol. but my current version of Media Encoder is now 4.2.0.006

  • Splitting events when capturing footage from tape

    Using Final Cut Pro x, I want to capture footage from tape which is of a more then one event. what is the best way of doing this so as to avoid all of the footage captured as one event.

    One way of doing this is to simply go into the Import from Camera window and select the clips that belong to one event then hit the Import Selection button.  A window will come up asking you which event you want to import to and also give you the option to create a new event.  After the little clocks fill up on each of the selected clips, that import is done.  Now you can select the other clips and import them in the same way specifying a new event when you are asked where they are to go.  Best wishes.

  • How much loss in capturing from tape?

    Looks like the days of tape are numbered.  If they haven't already, everyone will be using tapeless formats before too long.  I have a large library of HD (miniDV format) tape.  When clients want raw footage, I copy tape-to-tape using two camcorders and send a copy of the raw footage.  That will soon be impossible, because no one will be able to play the tapes. What's left is to use CS4 to capture the tape footage directly to a hard drive or memory stick and send that. I have no idea how much loss of data there is doing that, and hope someone might have some numbers to share.
    Thanks.

    A Firewire transfer from tape to computer is a copy operation... so there is no loss of quality
    Of course, those files are "about" 13Gig per hour for DV (I don't know the size for HDV) so sending a file to someone is going to mean several DVD's to write the files, in 4Gig segments, or copying to a USB hard drive and sending that back and forth

  • Detecting character encoding from BLOB stream... (PLSQL)

    I'am looking for a procedure/function which can return me the character encoding of a "text/xml/csv/slk" file stored in BLOB..
    For example...
    I have 4 files in different encodings (UTF8, Utf8BOM, ISO8859_2, Windows1252)...
    With java I'can simply detect the character encoding with JuniversalCharDet (http://code.google.com/p/juniversalchardet/)...
    thank you

    Solved...
    On my local PC I have installed Java 1.5.0_00 (because on DB is 1.5.0_10)...
    With Jdeveloper I have recompiled source code from:
    http://juniversalchardet.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/org/mozilla/universalchardet
    http://code.google.com/p/juniversalchardet/
    After that I have made a JAR file and uploaded it with loadjava to my database...
    C:\>loadjava -grant r_inis_prod -force -schema insurance2 -verbose -thin -user username/password@ip:port:sid chardet.jarAfter that I have done a java procedure and PLSQL wrapper example below:
       public static String verifyEncoding(BLOB p_blob) {
           if (p_blob == null) return "-1";
           try
            InputStream is = new BufferedInputStream(p_blob.getBinaryStream());
            UniversalDetector detector = new UniversalDetector(null);
            byte[] buf = new byte[p_blob.getChunkSize()];
            int nread;
            while ((nread = is.read(buf)) > 0 && !detector.isDone()) {
                detector.handleData(buf, 0, nread);
            detector.dataEnd();
            is.close();
           return detector.getDetectedCharset();
           catch(Exception ex) {
               return "-2";
       }as you can see I used -2 for exception and -1 if input blob is null.
    then i have made a PLSQL procedure:
    function f_preveri_encoding(p_blob in blob) return varchar2 is
    language Java name 'Zip.Zip.verifyEncoding(oracle.sql.BLOB) return java.lang.String';After that I have uploaded 2 different txt files in my blob field.. (first one is encoded with UTF-8, second one with WINDOWS-1252)..
    example how to call:
    declare
       l_blob blob;
       l_encoding varchar2(100);
    begin
    select vsebina into l_blob from dok_vsebina_dokumenta_blob where id = 401587359 ;
    l_encoding := zip_util.f_preveri_encoding(l_blob);
    if l_encoding = 'UTF-8' then
       dbms_output.put_line('file is encoded with UTF-8');
    elsif l_encoding = 'WINDOWS-1252' then
       dbms_output.put_line('file is encoded with WINDOWS-1252');
    else
        dbms_output.put_line('other enc...');
    end if;
    end;Now I can get encoding from blob and convert it to database encoding and store datas in CLOB field..
    Here you have a chardet.jar file if you need this functionality..

  • Preferred video format...from tape to...?

    I have a client that will transcode from tape to digital file for me. Since I want great quality video what is the best format and specs I should ask them to deliver so I can edit directly with FCP?

    Depends on the tape format. DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD...all can be captured natively. Digibeta, Beta, HDCAM, D5...all need to be captured into another format...Uncompressed.
    So...what have you got?

  • When I capture from tape, express 4 now breaks my captured material into separate shots, an icon in the browser for each. Before it captured the whole clip till I hit escape, and created just one Icon. How to i get back the way it was.

    When I capture material from tape with final cut express 4, it used to create one icon for the whole clip. Now, when i capture, it breakes  the material down into many browser icons, shot by shot. I dont want that. How to I return to what I ahd before/

    What you describe is normal behavior for HDV capture using FCE.
    DV captures as one clip or may split the clip if there are timecode breaks on the tape.
    HDV always breaks clips at the shot changes using FCE.
    HDV cameras can downconvert to DV even if HDV was used to record the footage so it's important to know what the camera outputs during FCE capture.
    Maybe this is why you have had mixed results with the differing capture windows?

    My question is, How can I restore control file from tape backup without CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP setting ON.
    It sounds like, There is no way we can restore control file from tape backup if you've not set the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is ON.
    Please advice

    When all controlfiles are lost and a recovery catalog is NOT used, RMAN has no information , where to find the controlfile backup. It's not enough to specify the channel, such a channel could hold many different backups from many different databases. You have tell , which database and which backupset. Modify your run block:
    SET DBID <DBID of the database,for which you want to restore the controlfile>;
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM <name_of_backupiece_which_contains_the_controlfile backup>';
