Epson Printer Profiles and Mac ColorSync

I have had a consistent problem with PS CS3 printing darker than my calibrated monitor despite everything that I do with softproofing etc. Interestingly, when I print the identical image from Lightroom 2.2, the paper print is a much better match to what I am seeing on the monitor. I am beginning to wonder whether the difference has anything to do with the way these programs interact with ColorSync on the Mac. I am using an Intel iMac running OSX 10.4.11 and print with an Epson 2200 using the custom Epson paper profiles available on Epson's website. In both the Lightroom 2.2 and the CS3 I leave ColorSync set to Standard and allow LR or PS to manage the printing (No Color Management); however, when I open the Mac ColorSync Utility and examine the printer profiles there, it is using the standard Epson profiles that came with the printer driver rather than the newer ones (e.g., SP2200 Luster_PK.icc rather than SP2200 Prem.Luster1440.icc). Could this "mismatch" of printer profiles be causing a different result in LR2.2 and Photoshop? Should I change the profile in ColorSync so that it points to the new profiles?
I'd appreciate anyone's help!!

And remember:
The file (the document Source Space) is independent of Photoshop.
The Color Management System CMS, Photoshop, ONLY uses the monitor profile for one thing: To PROOF source file on the monitor (the monitor profile has zero to do with how the file prints).
The Color Management System CMS, Photoshop, ONLY uses the printer (target) profile Print Space for one thing: To PROOF source file on the paper (the printer profile Print Space has zero to do with how the file looks on the monitor).
In other words:
The printer can PROOF (print) the source file faithfully regardless of how right or wrong the monitor is set up, and
The monitor can PROOF (display) the source file faithfully regardless of how right or wrong the printer is set up.

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

  • How do I install custom printer profiles in Mac os mountain lion. I can.t fine the icc profiles directory (if that's what it is).

How do I install custom printer profiles in Mac os mountain lion. I can't find the icc profiles directory (if that's what it is).

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder. You'll need to do it again after each system update that's applied.

  • Epson print profile problem. Prints overexposed.

I am doing something wrong so here it goes. I was printing on Epson semi gloss paper and all was fine. I switched to Epson Premium Glossy paper, switch to what I think is the proper printing profile according to the Epson website, but now when I print all my photos are overexposed. On the screen they look fine. I have tried to adjust using Aperture but it appears I cannot adjust enough to make a difference. My printer is an Epson R2400, I believe all my drivers are up to date, as well as my Mac software. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am pretty sure there is a bug in Aperture, because I can get perfect prints from Preview or almost any other app, but with Aperture 2.1.1 and Mac OS X 10.5.5, my colors are off. Note, my problem is prints are too dark, not too light, and my prints from Aperture have a green cast.
After struggling with this for a while, I think I have a work around. I posted it here: http://blogs.oreilly.com/aperture/2008/06/printing-tips.html. Copied below, for your convenience. I hope it helps.

I am using a Epson R1900 (which is a huge improvement from my Epson Stylus Photo 870). I have a calibrated display, and colors are on very good on the display.
I use the latest printer driver from Epson. NOT the Gutenprint, gimp, or cups print drivers. I tried those, and was not pleased.
Here is my workflow and settings.
Select Print (image, book, whatever) to get the printer dialog. Select your printer. Then (this is important), select ColorSync Profile = SystemManaged.
Now, hit the print setting button. Select the driver specific setting from the pop-up menu. On an Epson, it is called "Print Settings". Then select your paper type, color= color, 16bits, color settings= 'Off (No Color Adjustment)', print quality, and speed. If you have advanced settings, check those. My advanced setting tells me the name of my colorsync profile. Very handy if you are going to calibrate your printer for different papers.
Now everything is set up. It should print fine. But is doesn't. At least in Aperture. So, hit Preview in the main print dialog box. That should send a PDF temporary file to Preview. In Preview, select print. Now do all the settings again.
In Preview, there is a "Color Matching" setting on the popup menu. Select Color Matching, ColorSync (as opposed to EPSON Color Controls). I select profile "Automatic" which gives the same profile noted above under advanced settings.
Now, finally, you can print. And the prints look great.
From any application besides Aperture, the colors are so good on the print, I did not even bother to calibrate the printer. The stock profiles are perfect. Using the work around above, I also get excellent color.
Using Aperture, with either the colorsync profile selected in Aperture, or using System Managed, I get poor results. Too dark with a green cast. But by sending the print to Preview first, I am able to work around the bug.

  • Printer Profiles and Onscreen proofing

Is there a way to adjust the options for Onscreen Proofing with ICC profiles in Aperture?
I downloaded and installed the Premium ICC printer profiles for the Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer and have noticed an issue when I use Onscreen Proofing with these profiles, especially the matte ones. The screen display is muted as if the contrast is lowered and the colors compressed. I viewed the same image in Photoshop with Proof Colors and did not see this problem until I turned Simulate Paper Color on in the Customize Proof Condition dialog. Then the image took on the same appearance. Interestingly, the problem does not occur when I use the Epson profiles that are installed by default with the software that comes with the printer. The images print fine in Aperture (better than from Photoshop) using either the premium or default profile. I just can't use the premium profiles for onscreen proofing.
The bottom line is that the Epson Premium ICC printer profiles appear to be incorrectly built and do not simulate paper color accurately. In addition, Aperture appears to simulate paper color by default and I can't find a way to turn it off. This is unfortunate since the default Epson profiles, which are less accurate for printing, provide more accurate onscreen proofing.

  • Disappearance of EPSON Printer Utility3 and why doesn't Utility4 work.

I've been happily printing to this printer since about 2005 using my old 800mhz PowerPC Flat-panel iMac(2.1) as a print server. I finally decided to retire that box and plug the printer directly into the USB port on the Airport Express. It worked like a charm.
Yesterday, I need to replace an ink cartridge and put a print job on hold. Today, not really thinking, I first went to Applications/EPSON Printer Utility3 to check on things and lo and behold, that alias pointed to thin air... /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Utilities/EPSON Printer Utility3.app, created back in 2008.
Evidently some (I assume Apple OSX) update along the line renamed the EPSON drivers, but didn't delete the alias from the /Applications directory, nor replace it with anything.
    Now, I find two options:
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Utility/UT4/Epson Printer Utility 4.app
    and
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Utility/UTL/Epson Printer Utility Lite.app
"LIte" is launched by "Preferences/Print & Fax" and from what I can tell so far works fine with the Printer connected via the Airport Express. It generates ink levels, nozzle checks and head cleanings. I assume I'm printing via Bonjour, but don't know how to tell. (I have Bonjour set up in general for working with the other 2 Macs I have as well as using TCP/IP via an Airport Extreme with the Airport Express set up as a WDS network.) I had no problem setting the printer up to print via the Airport Express, and it prints fine.
Other than idle curiosity about where Utility 3 went, Utility 4 is the question.
If I try to launch it, I get a pop-up:
"Epson Printer Utility 4 cannot be executed.
The printer is not registered or this software cannot function properly using the current connections. (Version 8.27)"
BTW: 8.27 is the driver version and PPD file version for the printer as shown in System Profiler.

Same problem. I had a software update from Apple yesterday that had an epson driver update in it. I said, "sure why not".
Today as I was printing I saw the red light flashing on my (directly plugged in) Epson Stylus Photo R265. Went to check the levels and Epson Printer Utility 3 alias in Application folder couldn't find the Epson Printer Utility 3.
Checked out this thread and saw that the utility is in the library and found that it was in fact no longer in "/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Utility".
But there is Utility 4.app and Utility Lite.app. Utility 4 will not launch and Utility Lite says, "Printer not registered.
And so I googled "Epson Stylus Photo R265" which brought me to Epsons UK (United Kingdom) page and redownloaded the original (the one I had downloaded over a year ago) "Gutenprint v5.2.3" driver and walla "/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Utility/UT4/Epson Printer Utility 3.app" is back.
And I didn't even have to repair the alias link. Oh yea and I checked my levels. Need yellow.

  • Epson printer profiles

I am using Photoshop CS3 (set to Adobe RGB (1998)) and printing to Epson Stylus Photo RX620 with Epson Premium photo papers. I set photoshop to manage colors and disable color management in the printer dialog. I have calibrated my monitor (Dell 1901FP) using Adobe Gamma software.
Since Epson has not created any ICC profiles for the RX620, does anyone have any suggestions for which printer profile(s) (ICC) to use?

I would have custom profiles made for all your paper/ink combinations. I use Chromix, but there are several good outfits online that can build good custom printer profiles for you.
Using profiles for other printers/inks/papers will probably not give you accurate results.

  • Epson Print CD and OSX 10.4.11

For the past week, I've been having a running battle with Epson about my Stylus Photo R320 which has suddenly become useless. Epson Print CD software crashes, and since my business is creating DVDs and CDs, this is a bit of a problem...
Epson insists that this is a problem with OS 10.4.11, and indeed, it is happening on both my computers running this version of the OS. The following excerpt from the crash report is the same on both computers: Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000007
Can anyone offer any help or advice? I'm losing business! Thanks so much!!
BTW, I'm running a Mac G4 AGP Graphics with 2 gigs of RAM and an OWC 1.4 gig PowerPC processor upgrade. The laptop is a 12inch G4 1gHz Albook with 768MB of RAM.

Have you had any luck with your printer.
I have a Epson R265 that has become useless aswell using the same OS?

  • Epson Printer Drivers and Leopard - Epson 740 or Epson RX700 problems

It seems even after Epson updated their printer drivers Leopard will not all me to print to my Epson Stylus Color 740 AND my Epson RX700, I must choose one over the other.
If I install the printer drivers from Apple they include drivers for the old Epson Stylus Color 740 and it works fine. The problem is it kills my new Epson RX700 printer. It still works, but I cannot print CDs.
If I delete the Epson printer drivers from my Library folder and start over with the updated Epson RX700 drivers I can print to the RX700 including to CDs, but they do not offer an Epson Stylus Color 740 printer driver beyond system 9.
I have tried installing the newer Epson RX700 drivers over top of the Apple installation but the same result happens.
Can anybody help? I need the old drivers from Apple's system 10.5 installation disk so I can print to my old workhorse Epson 740 and my Apple 630 laser writer pro. But I also would like to print to CDs using my new RX700.

I have exactly the same problem...I have submitted a query to Epson...but we all know how good support is from companies like Epson and Apple

  • Can one set up Lightroom to allow use of manufacturer's printer profiles and Advanced Color Settings

I like the effects that I can apply to my B&W images using Advanced Color Settings, but understand that I get best print quality using the manufacturer's paper profiles. However, I get locked out of Advanced Color Settings unless I choose "Managed by Printer". Can I do both - select a specific paper profile and use Advanced Color Settings? Thanks

I don't know what printer you are using. But if you want to use all of the controls in the Lightroom print module you need to let Lightroom manage the color. For my printer, this requires making that choice in Lightroom and then disabling color management in the printer driver. Then, using Lightroom, I am able to use all of those settings and choose the appropriate profile provided by the paper manufacturer.
With my printer, if I choose to let the printer manage the color, I can make all of those choices in the printer driver. But you cannot split your management between Lightroom and your printer.  You have to go one way or the other.

  • Epson Printer Utility2 and a C88+

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard my MacPro cannot use the Epson Printer Utility2 to manage my Epson C88+ printer. I use it for letters and stuff -
The Printer Utility2 program crashes on start-up and I am given, instead, Printer Utility Lite...
That "Lite" program lacks the features that tell me which ink is out - and docks the heads for replacement.
I tried everything to import Printer Utility2 - but it will not run.
    Anyone ???
And - the C88+ printer works fine otherwise.

It sounds like you have the Gutenprint driver installed. Here is how you can uninstall the driver and then get the Epson driver from Apple Software Update:
First, power off your printer, then download the Gutenprint uninstaller from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
Once you have uninstalled the Gutenprint driver, do the following:
    1. Reboot the computer
    2. Power on the printer
    4. Your system will check for updates. Follow the directions to install the updates.
    Hope that helps.

  • Print Profiles and Packing Stations

How do I get print outputs from a Handling Unit Packing Station to de directed to the printers assigned in Print Profiles PRPHU?
The Handling Unit Packing Station is linked to the Print Profile through HUPAST_C and the Print Profile is linked to 2 outputs to 2 different printers. But it donu2019t work the way I supposed it to work - I get the message "No printer defined for output ZST1"

It may be helpful to you to know the logic which determines the printer that is used for output on the system. This is as follows :
    1. the system will first check the output device specified in output record. The setting here has most priority.
    2. system will read the setting in output type customizing double click the corresponding output type, find field "print parameter". Please see F1 help for this field.
       3. According to the setting in point 2, system will choose output device either specified in trxn VP01 or trxn SU3.
Also, please be aware that if output is entered manually, then the printer is not defaulted. Print parameters are only defaulted when the output is determined by the system automatically.
    Hope this helps.
