Erase and Sync Question..

OK so annoyingly I formated my hardrive on my pc and reinstalled everything. Now I plug my iphone in to my PC and it upon clicking on Sync it says it must erase and sync as the iPhone was syned with another computer.... hmmmm
So I don't mind losing my music and apps as there now on the reformatted PC anyway but I dont want to lose my text messages..
I presume if I click on erase and sync I wll lose my messages?
Can I erase and sync and then if all messages are gone reinstall a backup and iTunes will be happy?
Cheers, Ben
PS I did manage to backup my iphone backups and have put them back on the PC. iTunes does see the previous backups..

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only.
When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the Phone first.
Your computer is detected as a new or different computer after reformatting the hard drive.
This does not erase all content on the iPhone - this is not a complete iPhone erase and does not involved restoring the iphone with iTunes, which is a separate process and must be manually selected. Data such as SMS is not included with the iTunes sync process except for being included with the iPhone's backup.

  • IPhone synced with another library..."Erase and Sync" question

I helped someone transfer from an older iPhone to an iPhone 6 and did an encrypted backup on my laptop and then restored that backup to their new phone.
When they took the phone home and tried to sync their library with it they got the following message:
"The iPhone ... is synced with another iTunes library on ...  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?"
I understand what iTunes is referring to but what does "Erase and Sync" actually do?  Does it just erase any media i.e., songs, apps and videos and then resyncs them from the new library or does it completely wipe the phone and start from scratch?
    Thanks...

When you say erased, you mean almost like a restore is done to factory settings instead of just the media being erased?
I ask because the older phone is no longer available and they want to preserve their photos, etc.
Can I backup the phone on their computer, select erase and sync and then restore from that backup?

  • Question Concerning Erase and Sync and Itunes backups

Earlier this year my Computers Harddrive exploded without me making a backup.  overtime I have moved all my new data to a new Itunes library and now after just about everything has been moved My Itunes is telling me that for my 5 devices, That I need to do an Erase and Sync.  If I were to first backup my devices in Itunes would I be able to recover everything after the Erase and Sync ( Notes, Contacts, Remiders, ect.) Also a side question,  If I restore my phone from a backup, are the data in the Apps Lost
Sorry For Poor Grammar did this in a hurry

If the songs are still on your computer then you'll have to add them back into iTunes and rebuild your library. Once you've done that you can reload your iPod. Pressing "Erase and Sync" when iTunes brings up the dialogue window asking whether you want to replace the songs on your iPod with the songs in this iTunes does exactly what it says. If you linked to an iTunes with only a few or completely different songs it will have erased your original iPod song list, iTunes itself must have been empty at that point as erase and sync erases the iPod not iTunes. If you lost your songs entirely from the computer and the iPod there are some data recovery programs on the market. I've no personal experience of them so I can't say how effective they are, here's an example: iPod Data RecoveryBuegie - Recovering Songs
None of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you would have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.

I have an old dell desktop and an older ipod with my itunes library....the dell desktop is not functioning as well and have not been able to sync a newer ipod to the library .....i now have a newer Macbook air....i would like to put my library on my Air i tunes....when i attached the ipod to the air to try to sync the ipod library onto the air itunes i received a message that said i was synced with another library and that if i wanted to sync with this library i would need to "erase and sync" ....got spooked as i dont want to lose the library/ or the music....question ----will this procedure put my existing library (which is all on my older ipod) onto my Macbook air itunes?...any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you in advance...

No, it will sync the ipod to the content of the MBA which presumably has nothing on it (= erasing content of iPod and replacing it with nothing).

i normally shop on my ipod touch (because frankly i cant be bothered to plug it into itunes then shop! ) to shop for apps and song and etc. and because i have a wall charger in my room theres pratically no need to go the computer! so sometimes when im on the computer i want to use my ipod touch as well so i charge it on the pc.
well to cut the story short everytime i want to shop on itunes it comes up with this note that says "your ipod is synced with a different pc etc" then it comes up with erase and sync? so my question is what does syn mean? because im worried if i choose ok it would get rid of all my apps
    - someone help me!

    - It means what it says.  Your iPod is synced with a different iTunes library.  To transfer purchases to this computer:

  • Cannot manually manage music and videos without erasing and syncing first

I have an iPhone 3G bought new from the Apple store using 2.1. Using iTunes 8.0 and checking the "Manually manage music and video" checkbox, iTunes prompts me to "Erase and Sync", no other option is available to me. It was the same when using version 7.7 as well.
I'm not syncing to another computer, it's the same MacBook I've had for almost a year. How do I get the Library Persistent ID in iTunes to match the iPhone. I have the ID from the iTunes Music Library.xml file. I just need to know where the matching file for the iPhone is so I can make them match.
The ID doesn't match because I had to rebuild my drive a month ago and my question to Apple (actually Steve) is why can't I sync the other way from the phone to the computer.
Why does my library on the phone have to be wiped out. Who had the warped thought to come up with this genius idea.

I cannot express how disappointing this was for me to find out.
I want my music to be mobile, I don't want to have to copy it to every computer I want to listen to it on. I want to listen to it from the device, and be able to buy a new album at work or at home. This is a major disappointment for me, as every other device I have owned including my iPod Touch had this capability. I could authorize 5 machines and manually sync, and the music on that device could be played and managed on those authorized machines. For example, my wife has her own music collection, and I have mine, but we have a media center connected to our flat-screen in the living room, that we use for playing music when we are entertaining guests, and with our old iPods and iPod Touch devices, we could unplug one of our devices and plug the other persons in and listen to music from both our libraries without copying the music to that computer, as long as we authorized that machine for the both of us. Now with our iPhones there is no way to keep our seperate librarys and be able to play music on multiple computers in our house and at work, which we have always been able to do until our iPhones. The whole point of the iPhone for me was to be able to combine two devices and now because of the lack of this feature I still have to keep all our iPods around too... Dumb. I almost took our phones back because of this, and if apple doesn't fix it, I probably won't buy another. They should have at least mentioned this little fact before selling the devices to us. I know it's a different device, but it's similar enough that you expect it to work the same as the iPod and iPod Touch. It's not like I am wanting to be able to copy music from the device to multiple machines, it's exactly the opposite... I just want to be able to copy music to the device and listen to it at home and at work... why all apples other devices do this, and the iPhone doesn't is completely perplexing to me, and a serious oversight on there part. This pill would not be so hard to swallow if I had been warned about this prior to dropping almost a grand for iPhones for myself and my wife, expecting what I saw as a more advanced device to work at least as good as the other similar devices I own did.

  • Erase and sync issues (backup/restore)

    Hello.
I have an issue with the backup/restore with my iPhone.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find an answer that fits your problem exactly on the forum!  Lots of good stuff though!
This post will be little longer than normal, but I need to get all the facts on the table.
I'll try to keep this brief.  Please hear me out!
    From another post ...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12273122
    Kwopau stated ...
if you do a restore, you only have 2 options, Restore as new, meaning nothing will go on it
and you will just have to start fresh and no contacts will go in there.
The other option is "Restore from Back up _______" it will completely restore your phone
from your last back up and everything will be on there.
    End of quote ...
    Here is my situation.
    I have a 3g 16GB iPhone.
I am still running IOS 3 (not IOS 4).
I do not use sync.  I  manually manage the music and books with iTunes.
    I have an HP laptop.
A while ago, I had to completely rebuild the computer.
The computer has a new computer and user name (I don't know if this matters in iTune/iPhone matchup)?
I have not been able to connect the iPhone since then.
    Let me rephrase that.
I can connect with iTunes.  I can see all that is on the iPhone.
When I try to add or delete music or books on the iPhone with iTunes or set the manually manage check box, I get the following message ...
The iPhone "myname's iPhone" is synced with another iTunes library.
Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with the this iTunes library.
Most commands appear to be grayed  out,  I can't add or delete anything.
I do not have anything in current  iTunes library at the moment.
    My fear is this.
If I do the erase and sync as suggested  (iPhone message above) to the iPhone and then use the new iTunes library,  will I be able to use the backup (I just created) to restore to the iPhone that I just reset?
If so, will it have contacts and all the other stuff?
I can afford to lose the music and books, and perhaps the apps on the iPhone.
I cannot afford to lose my contact list.
I need to find another way to backup the contact list, Outlook, etc?
If there other posts relative to this, please point me to them.
I am afraid to pull the trigger for fear that iTunes will not recognize the iPhone after the erase and sync and then not allow me to restore.
Perhaps someone can put my mind at ease and convince me that it will all be good if I proceed!
Thanks for you time and help in this matter ...
    Bob

Do you know how to transfer purchases? Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes. Click on the iPad nema on the left side of the iTunes window to select it. Then go to File>Transfer Purchases. That should put all of your purchased iPad content into the iTunes library on the PC.
Here are instructions in a very short, easy to follow article.

This discussion will be helpful to show you how to make the PC work wTunes from the iPad.

What puzzles me is that if you had updated with the PC, I would have thought that you would have backed up and synced with that PC as well, but read the articles and instructions and post back with questions.
You can email the pdf files to the iPad, or use iOS file sharing, and open and save them in iBooks or another pdf reader app, but start with getting your stuff onto the PC.

  • Trying to sync new music i got on my mac which is my new computer to my iPhone and erase and sync is saying it will replace the contents of my phone. Does it mean Photos also or just Music and Videos?

I got a Mac and i downloaded new music on it and im trying to sync the music on this computer to my iPhone which is hooked up to another iTunes and iTunes is saying " An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes Library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library" does this mean that it will also erase my photos or just my music and videos ?? if it does is there another way to sync with out all my contents being deleted??

You can only sync one iTunes Library from Mac to iPhone.
And just so are you aware, Apple ID accounts cannot be merged, thus merging content > Frequently asked questions about Apple ID

  • Ipod is synced with another itunes library"erase and sync"!!

im trying to convert all my music on a different computer on a new itune but this message comes up (the ipod is synced with another itunes library. an ipod can be synced with only one itunes library at a time) "erase and sync replaces the contents of this ipod with contents of this itunes library". i need to find out if i do a "erase and sync" will my music library from my ipod be automatically deleted and replaced with and empty itunes library ???

Yes it will be erased and the empty library will replace it. So first thing is you want to say NO to that question. For information/help on getting the stuff into your new computer...

  • Once I have moved my iTunes media file to my new mac, will I have to erase and sync my iPod?

I have successfully managed to move my itunes media file from my windows pc to my new mac and all is well. However, of course it hasnt copied my itunes, its just copied all the stuff in it. So information about the number of times a song has been played or any playlists have not been copied over. Can i get this information? What will happen when I plug in my iPod to sync? Will I have to erase and sync?

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

  • If I "Erase and Sync" will my songs that I erased be saved in my ITunes Library?

I synced my Ipod to another computer, and it told me I could either "Erase and Sync" or "Transfer Purchases". If I do the first option, would I still have the songs I previously had on Ipod in my Itunes library?
    Thanks it's a confusing question! =P

When you sync an iPod touch to a new computer, all content on the iPod will be erased and replaced with content from iTunes on the new computer. You need to transfer any content from the iPod you wish to keep before you allow it to sync to the new computer or that content will be lost. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Once the content has been transferred, you can then allow the iPod to be synched to the new computer and it will sync back that transferred content. Note that this will happen any time you connect the iPod to a new computer; iPod touches can be synched only to one computer at a time.
    Regards.

  • Syncing 1 App with iPad - erase and sync?

    Hey guys,
I obtained a loaner iPad for a movie making competition I'm doing this week. Awesome device, but have one question.
The iPad comes pre-loaded with certain Apps. I want to put one of my apps onto the iPad. If I do this, will it erase and sync the app like I think it's going to, or will I be able to add one app without erasing any content from the iPad?
I think I know the answer, but it doesn't hurt to double check.

    It willerase everything.
Just redownload the app from the App store.
Make sure you are signed into your iTunes account. Settings > Store.
Open the App store then tap Purchases across the bottom and redownload the app.
And since it is a loaner iPad, make sure to erase it before returning it.
Settings > General > Reset - Erase All Content and Settings.

  • Trouble erasing and syncing iphone to new computer?

My laptop was completely reset a few weeks ago and i've only just re done my entire iTunes library ready to erase and sync. I have had lots of apple products before but the 5c is my first iPhone. Previously with the 'erase and sync' function (i've broken a lot of computers and had to reset my ipods so i am very familiar with erase and sync) i would rebuild my entire library to what it was before, so it completely erased everything on the device. I'm not sure how it works with an iPhone but this is what i was anticipating. I had completely done my iTunes library and even deleted photos and apps to ensure there was enough space. However no matter what i do on iTunes, despite it saying it has plenty of space and i am putting less music than i had on the iPhone previously, it keeps saying there is not enough space and i need an additional 2gb. Does this mean it's attempting to put music ontop of what music i already have? or is it simply just some kind of error? i've been losing my mind looking at all the community answers but there didn't seem to be any questions that helped me with my problem. I've spent the past two nights perfecting my iTunes library and i just want my phone back! All i basically want is for all my music on my library to replace what i already have, so i don't know what additional space it needs when i've wiped a lot of things off! Please help!

Set up the sync relationship without syncing ANY music to it the first time. Just let it delete what's on the phone now. (same goes for photos). Once the sync relationship is set up, then go back and select what you want on the phone and re-sync.

  • HT1414 having bought a new MacBook, I wanted to Sync my iPhone4 to it, but it insists the only method to do so is to "Erase and Sync" or "Cancel" which leaves no option to just use iTunes on the new MacBook Pro - how annoying is that???

I have had the iphone4 for 2 years now and I bought a new MacBook Pro, opened iTunes and it knew I already had other machines with iTunes sync'ed with it but it still insisted on offering one option or sync'ing with new MacBook - "Erase and Sync", which means deleting EVERYTHING on the iphone. What if I want my iPhone to dictate and get iTunes on the Macbook to match up with the iPhone??? Or at least get iTunes to relate to what my iTunes account obviously has on it and update that way. Come on Apple, as per usual, very pretty but not very practical!!!

You can only sync everything with your one syncing computer/iTunes library. Yu can:
    - Make this your syncing computer by:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    - Use the manual method to copy music and videos from any computer/iTunes library to the iPod. See the manual method included here:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
