Error 16389 running a Task Sequence to install software

We've run into multiple WinXPProSP3 computers generating error code 16389 when trying to run a TS.  After searching on Google, we found this,
http://blogs.technet.com/b/smsandmom/archive/2007/10/29/sccm-2007-task-sequence-fails-drive-letter-not-displayed.aspx
, which led to another article to modify a RegKey,  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} , to add a key of UpperFilters, with a value of PartMgr.  The key WAS missing on the machines with
the error, and, adding that key and value DOES fix the problem.  This key and value seem to be default for the OS.
However, searching Google for that RegKey has a LOT of suggestions to delete that key and value, due to issues with USB Thumbdrives and iPods not being seen when plugged in--so, it seems that there may be a conflict.
Does anyone know of a fix for Error 16389 without having to add that key, if it's going to cause other problems?
Thanks.

Hi,
Will you please past the detailed errors in the smsts.log?
From your description your are using TS to install software right?
If so you should first make sure this software package meats the following requirement when it was deployed through TS:
this program can be installed under local system account.
this program can be installed without any user interaction (such as: press next button).
this program will not force computer reboot, it allows sccm ts to manage the reboot.
If your OSD TS return 16389 exit code, you can try to change the volume license keys. Because once i have seem this error and it was solved by changing the volume license key.
Hope this will help.
Thanks

  • A custom task sequence to install software is always listed as Operating System on Software Center

    Hello,
I have built several custom task sequences to install software in SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 environment, but the type of task sequence is always listed as Operating System on the Software Center. I tried creating a simple task sequence (Task Sequence 1) that contains
a single restart computer step only and tried deploying it to a test machine. This task sequence is also listed as Operating System. This task sequence fails because this is not the one for OS install and I do not specify a boot image for this task sequence.
All task sequences that I have created in SCCM 2012 RTM environment are working as expected. All task sequences that I create in SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 are listed as Operating System regardless of its actual type (I upgraded my environment from CM2012 RTM to CM2012
    R2 CU1 last month).
Here is a test task sequence that contains a single step of restart computer. This is not Operating System install but listed as Operating System. Any thoughts?

If you use OSD steps in your task sequence you will get this prompt.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3eb7569c-0b5a-4b40-86c3-d4f092c70aca/task-sequence-warning?forum=configmanagerosd
    Per Mikko:
Using any of following steps (and possibly others as well, I did not check all of them) will change the task sequence type from generic to OSD:
General - Join Domain or Workgroup
General - Restart Computer (Only "The boot image assigned to this task sequence" option)
Disks - Format and Partition Disk
User State - Request State Store
User State - Release State Store
Images - Apply Operating System Image
Images - Setup Windows and ConfigMgr

Something is happened after your recon which is erroring out and causing a roll back. You need to understand what all tasks are running after the recon by watching the full log, and not just the error at the end.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Task Sequence Step "Install Package" downloads all content

    Hello,
Task Sequence step "Install Package" I have several packages with multiple programs. When I use one of these packages with one of its programs it appears to download all the package content is there a workaround to stop this
    from happening?
    Regards!

    Hi,
You could change it to run directly from the DP, then it will only use the files it needs and doesn't download anything at all. You will have to make sure that all the content needed by the task seqeunce is copied to the package share otherwise it will not
    work in a task sequence.
The other would be to split up the package in multiple packages if that is possible.

    Jörgen

Without proper system information and other details like what files you work with  nobody can tell you much. From corrupted prefs to issues with your PS swap file to actual problems with the fiel storage this could be anything.

  • Orchestrator and SCCM 2012 integration: run task sequence and install assigned applications/packages?

    Dear,
We do not have Orchestrator running in our SCCM 2012 R2 environment. Though I wonder if we could accomplish the following scenario with it:
Task sequence Windows 7 => Orchestrator step which queries assigned installations to the computer object and installs them one by one.
    Could you advise?
    Kind regards,
    Stev.
    SteveWonB

    > > Define "assigned to computer objects". How is this done technically?
Well, computer objects are members of collections via AD memberships, like the collection "W7-Google-Chrome" (exists of 100 computer objects).
Deploy of packages is done to these collections. So a computer member of  "W7-Google-Chrome"  will automatically get Google Chrome.
Some computers are member of 30 collections, some of 80.
Goal is to have the task sequence run all applications/packages assigned (with their reboots if needed).
    Kind regards,
    Steven

This is only happening with one of many Surface Pro's
I am unsure what would cause this, booting from USB in a hub with USB Network Adapter.

I've seen this on a few of the Surface Pro 3's we got in recently. It is because you need to update the date/time in the OS. The easiest way to do this is to
    (1) Make sure you have command support enabled in your boot image.
    (2) Before you start your image process from the boot image, press (Fn + F8)
    (3) At the command prompt, check your date/time.
    (4.a) Type cd x:\windows\system32
(4.b) Type date the current date is displayed, it's most likely off. It will prompt you to change the date using the mm-dd-yy format, change to the current date there, press enter
(4.c) Type the Time the current time is displayed (24 hour time), key in the current time press enter
    (5) Start your imaging process, all should be well
Excellent advice!!! For me, even though I had already booted the OS on my SP3, fully updated the firmware and restarted about 6 different times, I still would get a failure when the Boot image started to load. I followed these instructions and I was good to
good. I'm just floored to see that my date and time were off by 3 days and 11 hrs, even though my OS was correct. I'm flabbergasted that this was the case. Thanks for the post! Helped me a lot!

  • Error during begin of task sequence, formatting drive

    Hi,
Please see error below. Strange thing is that BIOS seems ok but then UEFI format not.
BIOS is for old systems, UEFI for newer but this is a vm. Why does it try to do both BIOS and UEFI and why does it fail?
The logic behind the steps in a standard ts (both bios and uefi next to each other) is not clear to me
    Please advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt
Update: might be vmware drivers but they should be in the boot image x64. There is an error though eahc time on updating the boot image. Would it then make sence to delete and recreate the boot image? http://tompopov.blogspot.be/2011/07/instruction-at-0x769a7a1f-referenced.html

If you edit your task sequence and go to those tasks, click the options tab.  It shows you the criteria it uses to decide on whether to use or not.
UEFI should only be used if it's set in bios.  Should either have UEFI native or hybrid on.   If those are not set and it's still running, I have to wonder if your task options have been cleared maybe.

  • Task Sequence Fails after Software Updates Install Step - Lenovo X240

    Hi All.
I'm having a strange issue trying to run an OSD on Lenovo X240 machines.
After the Software Update step, it reboots as expected, then exits the task sequence and sends you to the windows logon screen.
Review the SMSTS.log, it appears the reason is:
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I218-LM" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
    Full log file:
    SMSTS.log
If I remove the Software Updates step, the task sequence completes without any problems.
Don't think it is a driver error, as above, every other step completes without issue. Other models use the same task sequence (including software updates step) without any problems.
    Any ideas? I'm completely stuck.
    Thanks!

Looks like I am deploying KB2965788 which requires two restarts.
    Thanks all for your help.
P.S. - I periodically update the base image with a build & capture to include the latest updates, so in the times between this I deploy the software updates as part of the task sequence.
I've found the offline servicing to be very flaky, have attempted to use it many times and found it either a) doesn't apply the updates to the image b) corrupts the image.

  • Running a Task Sequence within a Task Sequence

We are running an SCCM 2012 R2 setup for OSD, WSUS, App Deployment and Endpoint Protection.
To simplify the management of drivers across several OSD task sequences, I'd like to have one "master" task sequence containing only Apply Device Drivers with model specific targeting that is referenced from the OSD task sequences.
Why would I want this? With every new computer model that is being added to the environment (We are currently supporting 20 different computer models, and the list keeps growing), I have to update one task sequence with model specific targeting for a driver
package, then copy all the changes to several other task sequences. To try to simplify the administration and reduce the chance of human error and ensure consistency across the board, this would probably be the best way to ensure this.

Out-of-the-box you can't start one task sequence within another task sequence. A few workarounds:
    You can make your task sequence put your computer object in a new collection which has a new task sequence targeted, but that probably won't perform that well;
You can target multiple task sequences to the same collection and try to use PowerShell to trigger a new task sequence. For example something like this (I have never tried to use this from a task sequence):
    http://powersheller.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/sccm-2012-execute-task-sequence-with-powershell/
You can try to merge your current task sequences.
    My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/
    Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude
Since what I'd like to do is to "pause" the current task sequence until the second task sequence has run and then resume the current task sequence (Just the apply drivers step) I don't think either would be great options. I guess the copy paste
option is what is left for me.
Thanks for replying and your suggestions

  • Task Sequence not installing patches

    Hi,
In order to automate the patching process for servers, I have a task sequence that runs at a specific time which triggers a wuauclt.exe scan to check for updates. I have a software update group created with the patches that we want to install. This time
around the patches were available in software center but were not installed. I just would like to clarify what I found as to what may be the reason for this. The task sequence that is deployed has an assignment schedule of 4/11/15 At 03:00 and will run for
a maximum of 120 minutes. Checking the software update group scheduling properties, the software available time is set to 4/11/15 At 12:00.
Would this be why the patches did not install because the software available time was after the task sequence was finished running?
    TIA

    Hi,
The Software update muse be available to install through a TS as well, that is what I have seen in the past as well.

    Jörgen

  • Mdt 2012 sp1 command line does not run from task sequence

    Hi,
I am hoping I can explain this correctly.  I am using MDT 2012 and having an issue with running command lines, powershell and batch files that I setup.
The task sequence is set to use an account called "MDTService".  it has rights to join the domain but is not in the local admin group of the reference image.  a domain GPO renames the local admin account CoAdmin.
when running a command line to, for example, run xcopy a folder and subdirectories to the "program Files x86" directory, it does not copy.
When I log on to the system and use an admin account to manually run the command I do not have an issue.  if I log onto the system with the MDTService user and run it, it fails.
How do I get the commands to run from the MDT task sequence?  I do not want to make the MDTService user an admin.  I have tried the run as option in the task sequence but that did not work.  maybe is set it wrong.  I used a domain\Admin
    account which did not work.
what can I clarify or logs can I post to provide more details.
    Thanks in advance.

Any account that needs to add files under %ProgramFilesx86% must be granted administrative privileges.
