Error -36 Copying from NTFS Ext HDD to new IMac ver10.6.2

Last Saturday I purchased a new Imac27. I was told that I could copy files directly from my NTFS formatted external hard drives with no issues. This was true until I tried to move large .avi files (3-9GB)
When I copy these files to the Imac, the copy process begins and proceeds till the very last second and then pops up a window saying the there was an error -36 copying the file.
I proceeded to try many things. I tried copying folders, combinations of folders, individual .avi files and all had the same result. I can open and play the .avi files from beginning to end on the Imac from the external hard drive. I can connect the external hard drive to a PC and copy the .avi files off perfectly. The files are in tact and ok.
Interestingly enough, my wife has an older macbook running ver 10.4.11. I decided to connect the external drive to it and try to copy the same .avi files. It worked perfectly - no errors.
I talked with Apple and they indicated to format my external drive (which was not the help I was looking for). I will call back tomorrow and share what I learned today and escalate this issue to a higher level tech.
To me, these seems like a bug that is specific to .avi files (maybe large .avi files?)
Has anyone else had this experience?
Anyone know a fix?
Thank you,
Dan

Thank you for the info. Do you have any idea when there may be an update that resolves this issue or is Apple is aware of it?
I downloaded and tried "Forklift". It didn't work. What I got was the file copied (I just put it on the desktop) up until the last second. A icon (somewhat generic) was on the desktop at the file was copying. At the end of the copy process, the file simply disappeared.
I will try the command line tomorrow. It's been a long time since I used the command line but that video is very helpful. Hopefully that will work.

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

  • How can I copy songs with metadata (added in iTunes) from my PC to my new iMac?

I have iTunes 12.0.1 on my Windows PC. I'm about to get a new iMac (hooray!) and I'm beginning the process of transferring everything on my PC to my Mac. I've got all the documents, pictures, files, etc. covered, but now I have to make a copy of all of my music.
Most of the music in my iTunes library is not bought through the iTunes Store (I download most of my songs from the Internet). Then, after saving the downloaded song to my computer, I go into iTunes on my computer and add the song. I also add metadata like artist, album, genre, album artwork, etc. to the song in iTunes. What concerns me is that only the songs in iTunes have this metadata: the original downloaded files I saved onto my computer don't have any metadata.
I really don't want to have to go through the long and tedious process of adding artist/album names, genre, etc. to every single song in my iTunes library on my new iMac. How can I copy songs with metadata (added in iTunes) from my PC to my new iMac?
Thank you so much for any help!

Hello! I'd like to learn more about Home Sharing. To do this, would both my PC (which I hope to get rid of) and my new iMac need to be plugged in?
Also, after Home Sharing with the old PC is initiated, I understand that all my songs would appear on my iMac. Is there a way to copy all of these (with album artwork, name, artist, etc.) directly to the iMac's hard drive and then disconnect home sharing so I can get rid of my PC?
    Thank you!

  • Migration Assistant and best cables to trans. info from a Mac G4 to new iMac?

Baest Cables to use with Migration Assistant from a Mac G4 to new imac?

No you can not use a direct USB to USB connection. You can however use a USB External Hard Drive and copy your music, photos and other files from the G4 to the External Hard Drive, then from the External Hard Drive to the new iMac.
The best option is FireWire, followed by using an External Hard Drive, then an Ethernet connection to migration from the G4.

  • How can I import Quicken Files from a G4 to a new iMac.

I need to transfer my Quicken 2007 files from my G4 to my new iMac. My G4 is running OS 10.4 and Quicken Essentials for Mac requires 10.5 or above. My G4 cannot run 10.5. My iMac is running Lion and I've heard if I load Mac Essentials on my iMac, I won't be able to import the files from my G4. Anybody have any ideas?
I've been considering making a copy of my system and applications folders on an external firewire drive, then connecting it to my iMac. I thne plan to use the external drive as a startup disk and load Quicken essentials on the external drive. Then, once eveything is loaded, I was hoping I could copy the files and pull them over to my applications folder on my iMac. Does anybody know if that will work?

I'm in the same boat!!! Been a long Time Quicken user and they finally made the software almost un-useable. I have 2 intel laptops in the house and a G4. The intel systems are both running Lion had I known the quicken conversion software dosen't run on Lion I would have converted all my quicken backups (going back to 1997) before installing Lion.
To answer your question, what I have found out is convert all your files on Lepoard then update to lion. The conversion software that comes with Quicken Essentials will work on Lepoard. Thats how I converted mine. But last week I needed to go back to and old backup looking for some transactions and found the Lion issue. Had to boot up the G4 and load the old Quicken software to look at the backups.
Been really thinking of switching to another product.

  • HT4527 I'm transferring my iTunes library from a PC to my new iMac via home sharing.  I've followed all of the steps to "import" my library but the "import" button is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was.

  • How do I transfer the music from my iPod to my new IMac computer (95% of the music on it is from CD's I own)?

How do I transfer the music from my IPod to my new IMac computer?  I just changed from a PC to IMac. 95% of the music on it is from CD's I own and the ITunes on the new IMac is only recongnizing the ones I bought off of ITunes.

That is correct.  The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

You can copy your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or other media (depending on the size of your iPhoto library). Then, you'd copy the iPhoto Library from that media to the same location on your iMac.
Using the Finder, navigate to your Home folder (or click on Go from the menu bar and click on Home). Open the Pictures folder, select your iPhoto Library and then from the menu bar choose "Edit" and then "Copy". Then navigate to your external disk, click on "Edit", and then click on "Paste".
Then, insert your media on the iMac, and copy the iPhoto Library from your external media to the same location on your iMac (the Pictures folder located under your Home folder).
Hope that helps, have a great day.

how can i sync numbers from my ipad to my new imac?

If you mean spreadsheets from within the Numbers app on your iPad to your computer's iTunes then there are instructions here. If you mean that you want to copy the Numbers app from the iPad to your computer then you can copy it to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases; but if you want to use Numbers on your Mac then you will need to buy the Mac OS X version.

  • How do I move data from my iphone to a new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac.
I would like to move all data (music, apps, etc.) from my iPhone to the new iMac - how do I do that?
Also, I have an old iMac that is no longer working but was one of the 5 computers that I had authorized for sharing music.  Is there a way to de-authorize that computer, even if it does not boot, to 'reclaim' a sharing computer?

how do i get my address book data from my powerpc to my new imac?

Your best bet is to use Setup Assistant (preferred) or Migration Assistant to set your new Mac up just like the old one.  That will transfer old 3rd-party PPC apps, but they won't work, and you can delete them afterwards.
