Error 8288 when upgrading my first gen Ipod Touch to IOS 3.1.

I am having some trouble trying to get IOS 3.1 on my first generation Ipod touch.  I have the latest Itunes, I do not have any dvd burning software like Anydvd that can interfere, and I've tried it on two different computers with no avail.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

msoviolist, I opened a ticket via their so called "Express Lane" support page, I assume it'll take a couple of emails before they decide to credit you for the download. I would suggest linking to these two threads in the correspondence, this is what I included in the message;

  • If I upgrade my 3rd gen iPod touch to iOS 5, will I lose all my content (photos, videos, notes, safari cookies, etc)?

So I've had my 3rd gen iPod for almost 5 years now, and I'm tired of all the "This applications requires iOS 5.0 or later; you must update to iOS 5.0 in order to download and use this application" notifications, and since I don't have enough money to buy the new iPod, I'm finally upgrading to iOS 5.1.1, the highest I can upgrade this generation.  In the event that it doesn't save my photos (Camera roll and the pictures I put on from my old computer that I don't have anywhere else), I have been uploading them one by one to Dropbox, but this is a pain.  Basically, I'm wondering: if I backup my iPod before upgrading the software, will it reapply all my settings and content after iOS 5 is installed?  I've begun the process before and have gotten the notification that all content will be deleted.  I don't have all this content on my computer, either, because the photo albums on my iPod were folders of pictures on my old computer that I lost all the files from.  I can't just put these back on from my computer if it deletes them and doesn't save a backup copy.  But does it save all the settings in a backup copy and reapply them?  That's what I want to know.  Do I have to keep bothering with Dropbox, or can I just go for it and know everything will be fine?

Only if something goes astray, which happens some times.
    - Backup the iTunes
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Make sure that all synced media like apps and music are in your iTunes library and any photos synced to the iPod are also on your computer. Synced media is not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes
    Then update vai Tunes
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
You need iTunes 10.5 or later on the computer.

  • HT201263 Elusive connection error whilst trying to restore 2nd Gen iPod Touch device (iOS 4.2) via iTunes

    Hi.
It's been a while since I've updated my iPod, and now that I've tried to update it (from iOS 4.2), whenever I click the 'Check for new updates' [for my iPod] button, iTunes states that the latest version is already installed, which obviously is NOT the case.
I am using the latest version of iTunes, and have already tried re-installing it.
After attemping to update, the next logical step was to restore, despite losing some of my data this way, for I currently have no-choice but to update via a different system to my usual managing computer of my device(s). However, an unexplained error occured, and my iPod is stuck in recovery mode (displaying that 'connect to iTunes' image it shows at this point).
Now, I've tried repeatedly to restore th iPod via iTunes, but it just won't work - as it is 'extracting software' (as indicated at the top of iTunes' window), it stops, giving a rather vague error: 'The iPod "iPod" cannot be restored at this time because the iPod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable'.
I have no idea why this occcurs repeatedly, as it is persistent to do so.
I'd also like to confirm that my system is correctly connected to the internet at a speed that should be ample to install any required updates (furthermore, this error occurs after no-more-than 1 minute after attempting to restore the device)
    Thanks in advance
    ~mini.

Thanks, but you don't happen to know anything else about this, do you?
Also, I've now realised it was pointless trying to update my iPod, for I've now found-out that the 2G can't be updated past 4.2.1 (or something) anyway >_>

  • When synching my 4th gen ipod touch I get error msg saying ipod could not be backed up because session could not be started with the ipod. It only does synch steps 2-5. Do I have to restore it?

When synching by 4th gen ipod touch it skips the first step - backup-, does steps 2 through 5, then I get a message the ipod could not be backed up because a session could not be started with the ipod. How do I fix this? Do I have to restore my ipod? Will all my apps be erased?

You have to have an internet connection, either wireless or through a computer with iTunes.  When you choose Software Update you can only update to the latest version for your iPod Touch, iOS 6.1.6

  • Upgrade to 4th Gen ipod touch - apps missing

I upgraded from 3rd gen ipod touch to 4th gen and some apps and contacts do not show on my new ipod.. any ideas how to fix?

Contacts are included with the backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. Although included with the backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer. If not and your iPod Touch is lost or stolen and not replaced with another, kiss your iPod Touch contacts goodbye.
Yes you should have transferred the backup for your 3rd gen to your new iPod especially if you don't sync contacts with a supported address book application on your computer. When connected a new iOS device to iTunes for the first time on a computer that is used to sync another iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iOS device to the new device, or set up the new device as new or don't transfer the backup. Now you must restore the 4th gen with iTunes from the backup for the 3rd gen. Be sure to sync the 3rd gen with iTunes before doing so.

  • Can not download any apps from app store with my first gen ipod touch

I am able to search for apps and maneuver around the app store, but i can't download anything. The button that says "FREE" or has the price of the app is unresponsive. There does not seem to be anything wrong with my screen since I'm able to use any apps I already have.
A google search turned up a couple of discussions from others that seem to indicate this is a recent issue.
I'm using a first gen ipod touch with the latest OS it can use.
Does anyone else have this problem?

For me the problem started on my IOS 3.1.3 Gen 1 iTouch sometime between my last purchase on 12/10 and a sync. So a sync didn't preceed it.   I discovered it when I tried to purchase an Audiobook. I can do podcasts, buy individual songs, but that's about it.  I can update apps so long as I do them all, although update has been like that for awhile. I can't buy apps (even free ones), audiobooks, or albums using the Touch directly.  I can't see many of the screen previews for apps and I can't review feedback on productcs either. I don't have any problems transfering purchases from my computer to my Touch using the iTunes app. I guess I eventually figured Apple might go here, but I sure haven't seen any announcement they were gong to do it now, so if it's intentional, it was sure done in an unfriednly way.  I'm a developer, so I understand having to move on, but my Gen 1 is no where near end of life, even if it can't run the latest IOS. I was an early adopter of the Touch, so I'm one of millions that helped IOS devices become popular.  I have newer IOS devices in the household under the same AppleID and another, and they work perfect.  But still use the Gen 1 daily. If this is the way going forward, I guess I'll have to buy on my computer or other devices and transfer to the Gen 1, but I'll sure miss being able to do it directly.  And I of course tried a factory reset and that didn't resolve it.  Given so many are having this issue, I'm pretty sure it's the older IOS or Gen 1 interacting with the Apple storefronts that's the issue. The question is, is it intentional by Apple, or Apple oversight with an update to the storefronts? If intential I can understand apps, but not sure about Music and Audiobooks other than possibly the older IOS is holding back new store features???

  • I receive the follwing error message when trying to open my ipod touch/itunes "the itunes libary.itlfile is lockedon  a lockdisk or you do not have write permission on this file. How do I resolve this problem?

I receive the follwing error message when trying to open my ipod touch/itunes "the itunes libary.itlfile is lockedon  a lockdisk or you do not have write permission on this file. How do I resolve this problem?

    Repair iTunes Security Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Securitytab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account (or the Users group) and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to Replace permissions entries... which will repair permissions throughout the library. When complete switch to the General tab, click in the Read-only check box to clear it, then click Apply.
If you don't have the option to change the permissions then use the Owner tab and Edit... button to take ownership from an account with administrator privileges. Tick the option to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Repeat with the media folder if it isn't stored inside the main iTunes folder.
If you've brought over the library from another computer you may also want to remove any "mystery" identities (S<string of dashes & digts>) that have come over from the old computer...
The images above are from Windows 7. Hopefully the system isn't too different in Windows 8.

  • 5th Gen iPod Touch w. iOS 7 not recognized by iTunes 11.1

On Wednesday I updated my 5th gen iPod Touch to iOS 7, and ran the latest iTunes 11.1 update on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5.
For two days, everything worked fine, but today, when I plug in my fully charged iPod it is not recognized by iTunes.
    Some salient facts:
         1. My iPod shuffle is recognized by iTunes without problem when I plug it in to any USB port on my Mac.
         2. I tried all of Apple's troubleshooting suggestions - restarted iPod and computer, tried connecting to different USB ports on my Mac.
         3. My iPod touch will still charge when plugged in to my Mac.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I did try all of Apple's troubleshooting suggestions.  It was the cable - Thanks for the tip!
It didn't occur to me to suspect that my still-new, Apple-brand cable went bad the same week Apple released two major software updates.

  • Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?

Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?  I'm running iTunes on my MacBook with Mac OSX 10.6.8.  I've checked to make sure in iTunes that the Podcast Sync box is checked and it is.  I've tried checking communities and tried several suggestions and nothing seems to work for me.  Everything else syncs except Podcasts.  I can't figure it out. Any suggestions to get Podcasts syncing to my iPod Touch again?  Thanks!

One other step I've tried was removing and completely reinstalling the playlist to the iPod. That cleared up the problem for about two days.

  • HT204266 is there a way to get older versions of apps? I have a 2nd gen ipod touch with ios 4.2.1

is there a way to get older versions of apps - for a 2nd gen ipod touch with ios 4.2.1

The only way is to jailbreak and download cracked apps, but I would recommend you wouldn't do that as this is piracy and jailbreaking is illegal in some countries.

  • First Gen iPod Touch will not update to 2.2

Hi guys, having a major issue here with this 2.2 update from Apple. I have a 16GB 1st Gen iPod Touch and am running Windows Vista Home Premium along with iTunes 8.
When I click to update my software from 1.5.1 to 2.2, it goes through the whole process, but when it should finish, it says "Update could not be completed, Error 14." I then try to restore the iPod, it won't do that either. The iPod gets stuck on the screen showing the iTunes w/usb cable picture.
    Any help on this?

    You can try this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
Beyond that if you are near an Apple Store you might make a Genius Bar appointment.
