Error Message Downloading iOD 5.1 to  4th Gen iPod Touch?

I have tried to install iOS 5.1 on my iPod a bunch of times now, and each time I get the same thing:
There was a problem dowloading the doftware for the iPod. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
What do I do? The iPod was connected the whole time, and as for network connection, I am assuming that that's my internet connection, which has been running fine on both the iPod and the computer. I am running windows 7 64 bit on my computer, if that helps.

I had the same problem too
My problem was
1st I was downloading, everything went well
and then there came a message
There was a problem downloading the software for the ipod
and on my ipod was the downloading screen
and when it stopped downloading, the screen stayed on my ipod
and it didn't get away
the screen is still on my ipod
How I have to get my old ( IOS 5.0.1 ) back?

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... (But can take Longer..)

In more specific terms. The apps that came on the iPod like the weather and maps and whatnot have been working flawlessly. It's just when I download an app and then disconnect from wifi it's almost like I'm on a timer until the app stops working. It acts like it wants to open, the screen flashes black then resets to the home pages. I've tried all of the basic fixes, rebooting, reseting, uninstalling then reinstalling. But like in my...long...question, the reinstalling option only seems to be a temporary fix. I just recently downloaded the 5.1.1 udate (I think that's what it was) does that have anything to do with it, or am I just derpy when it comes to iPods?

    HELP
Help needed to update a 4th gen ipod touch running version 4.3.5 (8L1) to the latest 6.0 version.  When I connect and try to update i keep getting a box which states that a connection error occured and I cannot update.
I have been given a new laptop for xmas which runs on windows 8, and the new itunes version (which is in itself a hurdle as I am a technophobe!) and this is all becoming a bit fustrating.
I have connected, updated and synced my iphone successfully, but just hit a brick wall on the ipod.  (which incidentally maybe where this laptop will end up!!)
Help if you can, but in laymans terms.......

Thank you for you input so far.....
I think we are getting nearer to the solution sort of!
Let me get this straight...... I have paid for content on itunes, bought the apple devicds in order to play said content, now I have to subscribe $25 for the privilage of playing MY library content on MY other devices. Which wasn't such an issue to do before the new and improved itunes version!!
Have I got that correct.  I think I cannot associate my other iOS devices with my library because I am unwilling to pay further through the nose!!!???  or am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Frustrated even more now!!

  • When synching my 4th gen ipod touch I get error msg saying ipod could not be backed up because session could not be started with the ipod. It only does synch steps 2-5. Do I have to restore it?

When synching by 4th gen ipod touch it skips the first step - backup-, does steps 2 through 5, then I get a message the ipod could not be backed up because a session could not be started with the ipod. How do I fix this? Do I have to restore my ipod? Will all my apps be erased?

You have to have an internet connection, either wireless or through a computer with iTunes.  When you choose Software Update you can only update to the latest version for your iPod Touch, iOS 6.1.6

  • My 4th Gen Ipod touch will not get past the apple logo

My 4th Gen Ipod touch will not get past the apple logo (unless the battery is dead, Then it tell me to charge it).  Once it gave me the connect to itunes screen.  I clicked restore in itunes but the ipod went back to the apple logo before the update download finished. I tried calling apple but my over the phone technical support just expired. PLEASE HELP!

This can be a corrupted software/firmware on your iPod touch. If the recovery mode you did was not forced, then try to force it into recovery mode. This is how:
    1. Force it to shut down (note: this sort of shut down should not be preformed unless you are in a situation like this because it is a hardware shutdown and will not attempt to unload software, save unsaved files, safely stop system processes, etc.) to do this, hold down the power/sleep button and home button for about 7 or 10 secs. Also I might be incorrect but I heard that you can just hold down the sleep and home button until the screen goes blank and then immediately let go.
    2. Have iTunes running. Hold down the home button and plug the USB cable that came with your iPod into it. Keep on holding on the home button until a picture of a USB cable going into the iTunes logo appears. You are now in a forced recovery mode. (In case your not so tech-savvy forced recovery is the same as a normal recovery mode that an iPod might do if it knows an update or restore failed.)
    3. iTunes should have shown a pop-up message about it found a iPod in recovery mode. Click OK, click your iPod from the sidebar and click restore. The iPod will show the apple logo for a while and iTunes will say "preparing iPod for restore" and then "waiting for iPod" this was the longest part of updates for me.
    4. iPod will reboot when restore is completed. When I update my iPod it one time showed the apple logo for one whole sync until it showed the slide to unlock screen, so do not worry. P.S if that does not work do a DFU mode restore ( I've been told DFU mode stands for device firmware update mode) I'm running out of room, so google it. Hope this helped ;)

  • 4th gen ipod touch won't activate

Recently was given an ipod touch 4th gen from a friend of mine. I did the factory restore thing on it, so I could erase all his stuff and start from scratch. So it started back up, asked me to input a language, and then a wi-fi network, and then it said it was activating - and that it would take up to 3 minutes to complete this step. However, i get an error message that says the following -
    "Could Not Activate Ipod Touch
Your ipod touch could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your ipod touch to itunes to activate it or try again in a couple minutes."
When I connect it to my computer, Itunes does not see that there's an ipod plugged in - but my computer does, if i go to "My Computer".
any ideas? The only screen I can get to now is the activation screen which I get my error from. I cant get to any other screen.

    Try resetting the iuPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Next try placing the iPod in recovery mode. See the following for recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
If that does not work try placing the iPod in DFU mode:

  • Facetime and messanging is frequently unresponsive to incoming transmissions on 4th gen Ipod touch any suggestions

I bought my son a 4th gen Ipod Touch.  It calls out on facetime and messenging just fine,  but will not receive them from any of my apple products(iphone4,ipad2) 50% of the time.  It especially seems to have a problem after its been idle all night.  Once he has called out on facetime or messaged me first it seems to work ok.  Any ideas on what it could take to fix this problem, it acts as if the wireless goes on standby but I cannot find anywhere that has that setting.

Disabling the computer's security software (firewall and antivirus) usually resolves that error.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If you previous synced to the computer then you may be able to recovery use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
    Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.
