Was updating at the App Store - Safari, iTunes, iWorks 09 and prior to that had updated something at Adobe's website. Then this error message popped up:
“//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
(I just received a refurbished computer with a new hard drive from a local Apple repair store...
Is this an easy fix. Thanks, CharlotteWhat I ended up doing is a reinstall the OS.
There was an important component I forgot to mention...my hard drive had crashed and I had it replaced. When it was replaced - the old drive was copied to the new. Since the prior error messages I had gotten from MemTest and CheckMate kept saying Bad Blocks in the drive - it was suggested that the corrupt or missing data on these "bad blocks" had not copied or copied incorrectly.
So only time will tell if this fixed this error. (Don't have external hard drive so never had Time Machine set up to begin with.) Original computer was refurbished and believe some things weren't done right from the get go. Oh well... Hope I didn't lead anyone astray. -
Received following message during installation of an iTunes update today (9/16/14): System extension cannot be used. The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update. What is to be done about it?
Thanks for the reply. I'm not experienced in the inner workings of the iMac system and its programs, so please follow my train of thought as I try to find and understand your reply.
You wrote that I should check out "Please see - AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error on installing iTunes update" and I did so.
There I found your reply of 9/1014 7:06 PM to j'ski stating: "There is a larger thread here which you may want to follow - system extension cannot be used AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext ."
And an earlier Post by Greg Earle of 9/10/14 5:57 PM stating: " You would have been better off doing open /System/Library/Extensions and then finding the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext kernel extension icon in the Finder window that came up and moving it to the Trash."
And a subsequent Post on 9/15/14 at 2:59 PM by Rob Maurer stating: "This method worked perfectly for me. I am on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. Dragged the kext file to trash (I use EasyFind. Found the file, Revealed in Finder, dragged to Trash, entered admin password when requested). Downloaded iTunes 11.4 from the website. Installed from that download. Checked for that kext file in EasyFind again and found it had a creation date of 7/29/14 (the trashed one had a creation date from 2009). No more error messages. ITunes opens fine. Everything good. Will not update on my MacBook Pro until they fix this issue.
All of which leave me wondering - what is your answer/recommendation? Do I drag the kext file to trash, download iTunes 11.4 from the website and install it from that download, check for that kext file again to see if it has a later date than the initial one? And, if so, seed if iTunes opens okay or not? And if so, do not update iTunes again until Apple fixes whatever is wrong? -
While running the Software Updater, I encountered an error: "System Extension cannot be used" ... System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Can somebody help me resolve this error message. Would this error affect my ability to run FaceTime ?
Seems pretty clear to me. Here's what you can try:
Open Terminal in your Utilities folder. Paste the following at the prompt:
sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
Press RETURN. Enter admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed so type carefully. Press RETURN again.
Restart the computer. -
I just got a message on macbook pro: The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" was installed improperly. Please try uninstalling it, or contact the product 's vendor for an update.
Anyone have any idea what this is about?Sasha-
Maybe your looking in the wrong "Library". On my Mavericks; I open the HD to see a folder below the Library Folder called "Systems". Open the Systems Folder to see a "Library Folder". Open that library folder to see "Extensions folder". Open the extensions folder to find the "AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" and delete that extention. Following Lanny's post, do this:
1st- Close iTunes.
2nd- Delete the system extension “AppleUSBethernetHost.kext” from here:
//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext
3rd- go to iTunes 11.4 download, here: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
click on the "Download Now" link.
4th- Find the downloaded iTunes11.4.dmg file, open it, now open the Install iTunes.pkg
After the re-install as above I got the successfully installed window and no “pop up”
improperly installed AppleUSBMultitouch.kext warning window.

/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.kext was installed improperly How do I reinstall correctly? I can never upgrade software because of this error.
Go to that folder and delete that file, then reinstall whatever software it was a part of (probably some HP printer software, I'd guess?).

I clicked on ok. The box behind said updates were installed and I didn't have any problems. Is this something that needs attention? Thank you.
If it does cause problems or reappears, go to hard drive level/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and move the file to the trash. Reinstall iTunes 11.4, which should fix the problem.

After a Security 2014-004 update, permissions, restart, I attempted to do the latest iTunes (11.4) update and received the following announcement:
! System Extension cannot be used The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/appleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the products vendor for an update.
What's this?Niel,
I have the same problem after reinstalling OS 10.6.8. I tried adding (do shell script "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" with administrator privileges) to Apple Script and followed all your suggestions. I have now installed OX 10.9.5 but get the same message. I did not use iTunes, but your message included "If it doesn’t work, throw that item away and then reinstall iTunes." Where do I get iTunes to reinstall? Sorry because I, too, am not a computer genius. -
