Error message then failure to boot up

My daughter is in Florence, Italy, for a quarter abroad. Her PowerBook G4 15" (1.5 gigabytes, 5.2 MB, 80 gigabyte Combo BTAPX--sorry, I don't have the OS version) was running slow today, then displayed an error message after some time in sleep mode, as follows:
1st and 2nd lines (identical message):
/etc/master.passwd:no such file or directory
3rd line (the double hyphens here represent dashes):
--sh--2.05b# in6ifattachlinklocal:failed to configure a link--local address on lo0 (errno=55)
4th line:
in6_ifattach:lo0 failed to attach a linklocal address.
The Stanford Center sent her to a local computer guy who speaks English and knows Macs. He said he'd never seen anything quite like it, but when he put in the startup disk he was able to get a start screen. She is desperate not to lose the long paper (etc.) she had just finished, so he did not continue further as doing so would have reformatted her hard drive. She is under AppleCare, and she will go to the only AppleCare facility in Tuscany by train on Tuesday (they are closed on the weekend, and she can't miss Monday classes). Is there any hope, especially with regard to her data on the computer?
Thank you!!
PowerBook G4

Message from daughter in Italy:
Here's what happened. When I typed in the first line, the output was a TON of lines somewhat like this:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 0 80 12292 (a date, a time) (Firefox, Users, etc.)
drw------- 7 0 99 238 (a date, a time) (Volumes, afs, bin,etc.)
d-wx-wx-wt 2 0 80 68 (a date, a time) (var -> /private/var, etc)
drwxr-xr-x 1 0 80 649 (a date, a time) (Desktop Folder, private)
There were lots of lines that started with drwxr. Also, where I typed parentheses above, there weren't any parentheses (that's just to show where the date and time would be). And on the very last item, those things listed in parentheses (which were not on the code) include some samplings of what was listed there (but not necessarily corresponding to the previous code in the line that I typed -- I just wrote down some of the words I saw throughout). There was only one word at the end of each line (or sometimes something like the very two last lines, which were var -> /private/var and one other somewhat like it with the var.delete code.
When I typed in the second line of code suggested, there was nothing, just a new prompt (that same weird prompt with the pound sign).
When I typed in the third line of code suggested, the output was the following:
ls: /private/etc/: No such file or directory
Also, when I typed in the very first line of code, there was no weird prompt thing...just a blank line with the cursor blinking. The prompt thing always appears after you type in something and hit return.
Hope that all makes sense (at least to the Apple geniuses out there). Thank you!!

  • Wordless error message, then failure to open

Help! iTunes is doing something odd. I try to open the program and what I get is what looks like an error box. However, what is in the box is the following: an exclamation mark inside of a "STOP" sign and the iTunes icon on the left, a blue "OK" button on the right- and NO WORDS. What kind of error is this? It won't even tell me. I click OK because that is the only option and the program then fails to open. Nobody seems to know what is going on so this is a good challenge for you experts. Please help! Thank you.

Thank you all! I followed your advice from this forum and here is what worked: I completely deinstalled iTunes, throwing away everything but my music files (I dragged them to the desktop before erasing iTunes). Restarted. Inserted iLife '06 disk that came with my PowerBook G4. Chose to "custom install" and deselected all programs (it didn't even let me choose to install iTunes, which I found curious but had a "it must be for a good reason" attitude). Finished that (under 1 minute) and got the message- would you like to download the newest version of iTunes? Yes. Did that. So now I had iTunes- but how to import my music files to it, I wondered? Couldn't find that answer, so had a brand-new iTunes with none of my music. Poked around, tried putting the music folder back in Users-iTunes but still nothing happened and iTunes didn't see my music. Hm. This next part is something I figured out on my own because I couldn't find the answer anywhere. This is a Mac, it must be intuitive, so I did what seemed logical and opened my hard drive-Users-my account-Library-Users-iTunes-iTunes Music and did command A (Select All), selecting all music files, and I dragged them to the Library of iTunes. Result? The computer is at this moment copying all of my music into the Library of iTunes. Thank you, Mac, for creating a computer which is intuitive! Success!

I was only able to print one page and then both my printer and my computer would display an error message about the printer's inability to print.  Since then I've been able to resolve my specific problem.
    I
    1. uninstalled HP from my computer (checked to ensure that my printer was no longer visible in my printers and the HP Utility software was nowhere to be found),
    2. grabbed the software/driver update from Aug, 2010,
    3. installed the Aug, 2010 update, and my problems seem to have been fixed.

  • Receiving error message "Sim Failure"  on iPhone 4S now no service.  any advice?

receiving error message "Sim Failure" on new iPhone 4S now no service.  any advice?

    hi guys,
i recently bought a new iphone 4s factory unlocked. in order to avoid sim failures and invalid sim errors or No service errors, Each phone has to be unlocked by connecting it to the Itunes.
Kindly follow the below steps to avoid any SIM card conflicts
iPhone FULL Unlock - How it Works:
-Connect your iphone to itunes without any network sim inside and when connected click on the iphones name.
    - Click Restore install latest version of iTunes on your Pc or Mac or click check for updates
    - Let itunes Backup your phone and then Flash to the Latest Version.
    - Now disconnect phone and reconnect after 10 seconds.
    - Now Enter another network simcard that's not the same network its locked on to
    - Connect phone to iTunes with not accepted (not valid) simcard
    - Wait until iTunes detects the phone
    - iTunes will display (Congratulations, Your iPhone is now unlocked)
    - Phone Unlocked
    - just follow the instructions about activating the Iphone.
    and iphone is unlocked
NOTE : This is the only FULL LIFE TIME UNLOCK solution for Apple iPhone as the IMEI is registered as UNLOCKED in Apple database.
This solution should be used ONLY THOSE WHO BOUGHT FACTORY UNLOCKED iPHONE 4S.
Your phone will always be unlocked even after each new update of your phone firmware !
All reasons given like bad IMEI series, manufacturing defects etc blah blah are not logical as everything was tested before every sale.

  • My iPad2 will sometimes hang when loading an mp4. Gives an error message then attempts to resync which hangs until I unplug the iPad.

My iPad2 will sometimes hang when loading an mp4. Gives an error message then attempts to resync which hangs until I unplug the iPad.
I have an iPad 2and have not had any trouble until I up dated my os. I have a pc with win 7.  I do not sync since I have so much music on my computer. I synced my apps during the back up but I had to manually reload my music and videos. Since then I turned off all syncs.
Since I have to load all my movies on this has been happening. I get through about 4 movies then it will hang up. I eventually get an error message that it cannot load this movie. I then attempts to close out. This seems to hang. When I attempt to eject the iPad it attempts to sync and that never finishes. I pull the plug and that stops the sync but I have to restart the computer before I plug back in the iPad or it will not recognize it or it will attempt to finish the sync which never ends. It sometimes hangs on something with safari and site protection.
After I restart my computer I can put in 4 or so movies, including the one it hung on before, but it always hangs up again. Any suggestions?

I am having an almost identical problem and hoped that iOS 6 and the new iTunes would fix it.  Regrettably, I again got 3 movies synced last night before iTunes locked up and gave me the xxxx cannot be synced "because the file cannot be written" message.  Same deal with iTunes hanging on "finishing sync" after that and me having to remove the iPad from the cable to get things to come back to life on the PC (Win 7 64 bit).
I've also done a factory restore followed by a restore from backup and have the same problem.

  • Error message (can't find boot disk) installing win xp on VirtualBox

In trying to install win xp to a VirtualBox vm, I get an error message that a boot disk can't be found. This seems logical to stupid me, as I have not yet installed the win system from the install disk. Instructions that came with the VirtualBox said I must have windows installer on my computer to install win xp. So I downloaded it, but cant figure out how to install it on the vm. To further confuse things, I can't seem to find information as to whether my Intel 2ghz core duo is a 32 bit or 64 bit chip.
Thanks for any help you can give me...
    Phil (confused in Menifee) Green

    Hi, Dave & Dave -
Wow, that took longer than I thought. I have been back for a couple of hours, and spent that time running the uninstall program, and then going to users/library/VirtualBox and deleting that folder, and its contents. Next I downloaded a fresh copy of VirtualBox from the Sun website, installed it on my computer, then ran the VirtualBox set up (setup the settings) and then clicked on the start icon. After the splash screen, I once again got the same error message. I repeated that routine at least three time, all three times I received the same message.
I then got the bright idea to go into my time machine and went back to several days after I had installed the program previously (March 25, 2009) and retrieved both the program from the application folder, and the vb folder from the user library, restoring them to my present computer state. After all, I thought, if it worked on March 25th, those files should work now. DRAT, I was wrong, Got the same message at the same place in the startup routine.
So, Dave and Dave, after a little more futzing around, I'm now back to the same place I was when I first posted about my problem: My win xp disk will still not mount. ****!!!

  • Error message when computer is booting up.....AppleNotifierSync.exe

I thought that it may have been just me. After reading other posts which state that others are getting the same message, I now feel not so all alone. I have a clue that I don't know what to do with...but here it is...
I just bought a new Ipod nano, and had to download the latest Itunes in order to sync my new pod. The error message in question just occurred after downloading the latest Itunes. No such message while using the older version.

You're starting X via inittab I assume? While booting, append 3 to the kernel line in grub (just the number 3, nothing else) and continue booting, this way it won't even attempt to start X. Then you can go through your configuration and log files, especially Xorg.0.log.

  • Error Message: "Printer Failure" Problem with print or ink system . . .

    Greetings!
I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but the error message refers to printer or ink system failure so I thought this was a good place. I've been troubleshooting my parents HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 AiO for the last 2 or 3 hours with little success. I've contacted HP tech support but they wanted $200 for the work to be done and neither I nor my parents, who are retired and on a fixed income, have the money to spare.
The tech support people said it was probably a problem with the drivers, so I attempted to reinstall the software, but that didn't help at all. A brief description of the problem might shed some light on this awful situation. Since this morning, my father tried to print something and the printer itself gave the following error message on the front LCD panel on the device itself (ie, not on Windows, but on the printer's display):
        "Printer Failure
There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn it off, then on. If the problem persists, contact HP."
Obviously my first course of action was to follow the directions. I turned it off, unplugged the cord, waited approx. 30 seconds, replugged it in and turned it back on. Nothing changed. I've also tried removing and replacing the Ink cartridges, checking the tray for a paper jam or shortage and performing a rain dance in the hopes of attracting the gods' attention xP. In short, I'm at my wits end and don't know where to go from here.
I'm unable to access the device's LCD display control panel, which controls the printer, as the error message cannot be closed. I've tried restarting the PC as well, and a lot of other basic deductive troubleshooting procedures to no avail (forgive my overuse of cliches).
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance. I wish you all a great day, and may the god of printing protect you from the same situation. I can assure you it's most unpleasant.
    Regards, Sean (frosztbyte)
P.S. I'm not sure what other information might be needed in order to help me, but ask and you shall receive any I can find.

    Hi frosztbyte,
I understand your parents have an OfficeJet Pro 8600 that is saying it has a printer failure, that you have thus far not been able to clear, despite your best effort and a rain dance (at least I know who to blame for the rain now ). I would be happy to help you as best I can!
The first thing I'd suggest you do is plug the printer directly to a wall outlet if it isn't already plugged to one, just to ensure the printer is getting all the power it needs to function properly. If that doesn't seem to change anything though, please have a look through this A 'Printer Failure' Message That Might Include an '0x610000f6' or '0x61xxxxxx' Error Code Displays o... document (it was steps for the same error without an error code as well) and hopefully it can help resolve the issue.
If the issue persists after trying the wall outlet and that document I would advise you try call HP again. I believe the number you called previously may have not have been HP, but another company. If you're in North America just call 1-800-474-6836, and if you're anywhere else have a look at this Contact HP Worldwide page to see what number to call for your area.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:
HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP
HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
You may be required to boot into safe mode to complete the folder deletion process.

  • Unmountable_boot_volume error message - XP refuses to boot

When attempting to boot a Satellite Pro A60 I get an unmountable_boot_volume error message on a blue screen and the PC loops without booting. It will not boot in Safe Mode, nor boot from the Last Working Configuration.
It is running Windows XP Profesional SP2.
I do not want to reformat the disk and lose the data until I have tried everyhing else!
I think I need a bootable CD-ROM with XP on it, which will allow me to get to the recovery console and issue the chkdsk /r command as described at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297185). The Toshiba supplied Recovery CD does not allow me to do this.
Question 1. How can I get, download or create an XP bootable CD to allow me to do this? I am computer literate and have other PCs to do it on.
Question2. The Toshiba Recovery CD has an option called Recovery Utility, for PC Experts only. Where can I get a manual telling me how to use it?
Question 3. Does anyone have any other ideas as to how to resolve the problem?
Question 4. I can download an image for a bootable floppy from Microsoft, but the Pro A60 does not have a floppy drive. If I buy a USB attached floppy, would I be able to boot the PC from the USB atached floppy?
Question 5. I think the data on the disk is probably OK, and it is just the boot files which are corrupted and are stoping it booting. Is there some way of plugging the disk into a deskside PC and reading the data from it?
    Thanks in advance.
(**** Note - I have also submitted this question to the Satellite Pro forum, but thought it would be useful here as well****)

I have fixed the problem as follows:
1 I fortunately had access to a D*ll Reinstallation CD for a D*ll desktop PC. It was for XP Home Edition SP1 (The Toshiba is a running XP Professional SP2) but I decided it would be OK to use it.
2 Place CD in CD drive, and power on holding down F12. This brings up the screen allowing you to right_arrow across to the CD drive, which tells the laptop to boot from the CD this_time_only.
3 A message appears "To boot from CD, press any key now..." If you don't press a key quickly enough, it decides you want to boot from the hard disk....
4 XP boots from the CD. AFter a while (a minute?) you get a blue screen with System Recovery Console at the top. Type r and press enter - this takes you into REPAIR mode.
5 After a while (1-2 minutes?) the C:> prompt appears. This is the first bit of good news - it can see the C Drive!
6 type chkdsk /r and press enter. This is the CHECK_DISK command, with the REPAIR option. Have patience - it took about 60 - 70 minutes to complete, during which time the % complete report showed inconsistent numbers - 30% > 50% > 60% > 62% > 50% > 60% ...etc. When it finishes it reported that it had found errors and fixed them.
7 Remove CD and boot normally. The laptoop boots and no data has been lost.
Why do vendors like Toshiba not supply a Recovery CD which allows this to be done? The only way to repair it with the Toshiba provided CD is to re-instal the XP software which formats the disk and loses all the data.
If you cannot beg, borrow or steal either a proper, full Microsoft XP Installation CD or a vendor's one (like D*ll) which allows you to do this, you can apparently make a bootable CD by following the instructions at "Bart's way to create bootable CD-Roms" at http://nu2.nu/bootcd/#whatis. I have not tried this.

Anyone know how to fix??  i am getting a general error message and then out of memory when adding a new squence??  Help!

The General Error warning is usually associated with incompatible files.
Out of Memory can be caused by corrupted clips, incompatible files and still images that use a color mode other than RGB.
