Error: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned"

I have been trying to troubleshoot this on my own for awhile. I am currently using a 20GB iPod that has a touch screen and uses a dock. The unusual thing about my problem is that my original iPod's battery eventually wore out and, since it was out of warranty by this time, I chose the option to pay Apple $59 for a replacement. When I received my replacement, I would get this error when I loaded Itunes and tried to connect my iPod via the dock. When I do, my iPod just keeps flashing the "do not disconnect" screen and this will go on indefinitely. Windows does not recognize the iPod except for that one error message. I am now wondering if it is possible that my replacement was defective (a refurbished iPod).
I thought that my new iPod might be a different model from my original so I tried to connect it without the dock, but I got the same error message in Windows (I am using Windows XP).
I have been told that I need to keep the I:\ drive open for the iPod... I do have an I:\ drive called "Removable disk" which may have been for the iPod, but I don't know how to get rid of it.
I called Apple and they essentially said "tough" when I said I wanted to replace my defective replacement. I do not want to pay another $59... and its not a battery problem either.
If anyone can help, I would be grateful.

Same person here, my other account was disabled for 'security reasons'.
So does anyone have any ideas? I think now I just want to send my iPod in for a replacement, but there is nothing wrong with the iPod's hardware... I think it's just corrupt or doesn't work with my dock. Is it OK if I send it in for this reason alone for a new/refurbished one?

Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

when i attach my iphone 4 with computer it shows one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it,now what can i do ..plz help me

I would first try unplugging All the USB devices plugged into your computer, and then plug back in just the iPhone and see if that is recognized.  Also, do you have the latest version of iTunes for Windows installed on your PC, as you need to?
    Hope this helps

I connected my sons Ipod Touch to my pc and it worked fine. Now, when I try to connect my iPad the following message comes up: One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
I checked the cable. It surely is not the cable. If I connect the iPod again it works fine. If I use the same cable with my pc and ipad at work or my other son’s laptop, it is working perfectly. It is only on my laptop where the iPod was connected. Something tells me it got something to do with the drivers that went corrupt or something when I connected the iPod.
I searched the internet and I see a lot of people gets this message. Still no solved answers yet. Is there a place where I can download the drivers again or any other suggestions?
    Windows 7 and iPad 2

  • MuVo V100 "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned&qu

My V00 freaked out yesterday when I plugged it into the USB port on my PC. The machine ended up freezing and I had to do a hard reboot. Post reboot XP gives the message "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned" and the player wasn't recognized. I did the system clean up and reboot recommended and the player itself is working normally again but XP still doesn't recognize the player. The V00 doesn't have any drivers I can locate so I'm stuck with a music library I can't update. I stopped at the office this morning and my laptop has the same issues. Aside from buying an IPod what else can I do. I've reinstalled the entire USB structure on my machine and all my other USB devices are recognized and working normally.

Try disconnecting the other USB items before connecting the player. Try connecting the player in a different USB slot. Connect the player directly to the USB slot, not to an extension cable or a hub.

  • G31TM-P21 One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and

Just bought the G31TM-P21 motherboard and installed it with a E3200 proc. Whenever I plug in a USB device in one of the four ports on the back panel I get the message:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
After clicking the message I get a window with:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." with a tree of USB Root Hub (2 ports) with Unused Port and Unknown device under it.
If I go to Device Manager nothing appears to be uninstalled but if I expand the USB I do have a single instance of Unknown Device among the root hub and host controller. I'm running windows XP home 32 SP3.

  • One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and ...

Hello all, I have the same problem with one of our members here and also would really appreciate some help. I have a iPod video since last December and it worked just fine. Yesterday, I took some of the data out from my iPod with another computer and everything ran fine also. But when I connected my iPod to my laptop, it said "USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctionedand Windows does not recognize it". I tried to connect that to another computer and same message popped out. I have charged my iPod, it usually took few hours to recharge the battery but this time, even though it was charged for more than 6 hours, it is still not fully charged. The iPod works fine (it plays all of my current uploads on it) it's just that it won't communicate with my computer so I can't update content and get my data out of my iPod.
I have tried to updates iPod in a disk mode, connect and reconnect again but it still doesn't work. I very much appreciate it if anyone can help. I can't afford to lose the data I have in my iPod. Thanks.

I'm not really up on the complexities of the Windows OS but try this tip I picked up a while back, hopefully it might help.
"USB Device not Recognized in Windows"
    1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Scroll down the list of devices to the Universal Serial Bus controllers
    6. Click the plus icon next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    7. Double-click one of the indented USB Root Hub entries.
    8. Click the Power Management tab.
    9. Deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
    10. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
    11. Restart the computer.

  • Cannot sync iTouch.  {"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."}

Any help?  I have not synced the iTouch in quite a while because it could not be found after an out-of-state move.  I just found it, after two years, and am wondering if it will sync if I Restore it.  I don't want to lose all of my music and if there's a way to avoid that, I would appreciate it the recommendation.
