Errors were found when compiling workflow in SharePoint Designer 2010

Hello there,
I've run into a interesting issue in SharePoint Designer 2010 when publishing a workflow. I now get the below error
Normally when I get this message I simply clear the SharePoint Designer 2010 cache described in this
article, however, in this case the issue still continued. Hence I started the process of trial and error and quickly realized that the Update Item action was the culprit. In this action I am updating approximately 70 columns. Currently, I have two such
actions running in sequence. When I added the third Update Item action to do the same, I started getting this error.
Has anyone else experienced this before? In the workflow I am currently working on I am going to have to using the Update Item action several times and update approximately 70 columns hence I am open to other ideas to do the same.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Entan Ming,
Thanks for your reply, Hope you are aware that while we create any new workflow using SharePoint Designer 2013. There are two ways (We can say Platforms) to create the new workflow 1. SharePoint
2010 and 2. SharePoint 2013.
If I choose second one I. e SharePoint 2013, and try to create, save and publish workflow it`s working fine. But whenever I select option no. 1  i.e. SharePoint 2010  Platform to create
the workflow, I am able to Create it , save it , but while I try to publish it I got an error:
Errors were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot be run.
When I click on Advance I got message:
Unexpected error on server associating the workflow
My question is that, I am not able to publish any workflow in SharePoint 2010 Platform, using SharePoint Designer 2013.
Before publishing a workflow, I click on ‘Check for errors’ button, there was no any error found.
Thanks & Regards Mr. Bajirao Shinde

  • Errors were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot be run.

    Greetings All,
I am having issues with a SharePoint Designer workflow.  This is a SharePoint 2013 environment, I'm using SharePoint Designer 2013 and working on a SharePoint 2010 workflow.  I'm developing this as a SharePoint 2010 workflow because I need to do
    impersonation.
The environment and workflow have been running, in the past week, without issue.  I went to add a couple steps and now I cannot publish the workflow.  While in SharePoint Designer, I receive the error:
"Errors were found when compiling the workflow.  The workflow files were saved but cannot be run."  When I click the Advanced button on the error dialog, the message is "Unexpected error on server associating the workflow."
That is all the error information I have available; nothing is in the log files.
I have investigated this error and tried the following:
    Cleared the SharePoint Designer cache.
The WebApp.UserDefinedWorkflowMaximumComplexity was at 7000 so I increased it to 10000.  Restarted the servers (which may not have been necessary) and tried again receiving the same error.  I then increased it to 30000 with the same error result.
Since this is a large workflow, I tried created a workflow with a single action, write to workflow log, with the same error results.
I reboot the servers and try again and now I can publish the small test workflow but not the original.  However, neither will run.  When I attempt to manually run the small test workflow on an item, I get an error: "Sorry something went wrong.
An unexpected error occurs.  I checked the log files for the correlation id and nothing, nothing was logged for the error. ~arg~
Also, now no workflows can be published in this web app.  Not just the one I was working on but none of them!
Does anyone have a clue what has happened to the SharePoint 2010 workflow service?  Or some suggestions for me to try?
Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi Sagar,
I appreciate it but if you see my original post, this is a SharePoint 2010 workflow that cannot be published; which has now caused all SharePoint 2010 workflows in the same web app to error.
Your first link is specific to SharePoint 2013 workflows.
Your second link refers to the UserDefinedWorkflowMaximumComplexity.  If you read my original post, I've already tried this and I've tried to publish a small (single activity) workflow.
Your third link also refers to large workflows with many approval activities.  My workflow doesn't contain any approval activities.
And you fourth link refers to 2013 workflows not 2010.
My issue is with publishing and running a SharePoint 2010 workflow in SharePoint 2013.
    Thank you...

  • Errors were found when compiling the workflow

My company has consolodated many SharePoint sites into one with many subsites to save money. I ported my existing libraries from theold site to the new site (Same version of SP). The workflows did not go with the libraries, as expected. I re-created each
workflow, and every time have gotten the same error message: "Errors were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot run."
When I click Advanced I see some variation of the following:
(-1, -1) Compilation failed. Could not find file 'C:\Users\TEMP.*domain*\AppData\Local\Temp\ **and then a different .dll file every time'
I have not seen any other examples of this online. For some, creating a new task and history list for the workflow allowed it to compile, but not always.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that Errors are found when compiling the workflow.
I recommend that you can check whether the file exists under the path 'C:\Users\TEMP.*domain*\AppData\Local\Temp\”.
If it exists, you can create a silmple workflow to check whether it works.
If it does work, you can add executionTimeout property in web.config file to increase the timeout interval(Make a copy of the web.config file before editing anything).

While i click on "export to visio",its showing the error as "SharePoint designer encountered an error generating the visi workflow drawing".
Please help me to get the logic of the workflow,so that i can create new one.

    Hi Aditi,
Which type of workflow did you use?
Did you create the workflow using SharePoint 2010 Designer or built-in workflow template?
If the workflow was created using SharePoint 2010 Designer, for editing the workflow using SharePoint Designer, open the site with SharePoint 2010 Designer, then click the 'Workflows' in left panel. Then in the right panel, click the workflow that you
want to edit, then click 'edit workflow' under Customization.
    I hope this helps.

  • SharePoint Designer 2010 approval workflow error revisited

Karen K started a question around:
    Errors
were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot be run.And when I click on the "Advanced" button in the error message, I see this detailed error:
    (0,
    0) Activity 'ID4' validation failed: Property 'DurationUnit' has invalid value. Field type 'System.String' does not match with the expected type 'Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Actions.DurationUnit'.)
    The full problem/solution is posted:

    However,
I can't figure how to do step 2:
    2.       Select
the Action and click the “Advanced Properties”
    ribbon control;
    3.       Find
the “DurationUnit” property in the properties
    box, and click the “fx” link in the box;
    Which
"Select the Action" am I looking for? I looked everywhere.
    Help

RoyKim, it's simpler than you think, which is why it probably stumped you.  This is all you do:
In SPD2010, click on the Workflows Site Object
Find your workflow and click on it to open the top-level settings page
    Click edit workflow
This is the page where you perform the steps from that other thread
Single-click the row that says "Start Approval process on CurrentItem etc etc"
Then click Advanced Properties in the ribbon
Scroll down until you find DurationUnit
Click the fx button on the right and re-select Parameter: Duration Units as instructed

  • Approval workflow in SharePoint foundation 2010

    Hello Experts,
I'm using SharePoint foundation 2010. Can someone help me understand the procedure for creating the approval workflow for a doc library using the SharePoint designer 2010. It would be great if you can guide me the step by step procedure for setting up this
    workflow.
    Thanks.

    Hi rebel537,
As you described, you are using SharePoint Foundation 2010. There is no “Start approval process” action when you edit SharePoint Foundation 2010 workflow in SharePoint
    designer 2010.
I suggest you using “collect data from a user” action instead of “start approval process” action to complete the approval task. There is a demo for your reference.
    1.
Open the SPD, navigate to the workflow edit zone. Select “collect data from a user “action.
    2.
Click data, in the pop-up window, click next and enter the task name for the approval workflow.
    3.
Click next, define the fields for the task, for this demo, there has a field “approval result”.
    4.
Then click finish.  Back to the workflow edit zone, click user, in the pop-up window, select the user for the task then click finish ,back to the workflow edit zone.
    5.
Add a condition (if any value equals value) after the action.
    6.
Click the first value, and then click Fx, there goes to a pop-up window, enter as below.
    Data source:  Association: Task List
    Field from source: Approval Result
    Field: ID
    Value:  Variable: collect
    7.
Set another value to “Yes”, add the action” set workflow statue”, set it to approval.   Add an If-Else branch, set the workflow statue to reject.
    8.
Publish the workflow, and use it for the approval purpose.
    Thanks,
    Simon

  • SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visio 2013 Issues

I currently have Visio 2013 and SharePoint Designer 2010 installed.  I have two problems that I'm experiencing and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    1. I'm able to export an already manually created workflow from SharePoint Designer 2010 as a .vwi file without a problem and am able to import the file into Visio Pro 2013.  I
was also able to export the file from Visio once changes were made.  However, when I go to import the file into SharePoint Designer I receive a message stating "This workflow cannot be imported because it was created in SharePoint Designer for a
different site, or the original workflow has been moved or deleted.  To move a workflow between sites, use Save as Template (.wsp file) instead of Visio workflow drawing."  I cannot figure out how to save it in the format the prompt is suggesting
as this is not available from the list of Save As options from Visio and when exporting from Visio the only format to do so is as a Visio Workflow Interchange (.vwi file).  When exporting from SharePoint Designer I’m only able to export as a .vwi file
and the Save As option is not available in SharePoint Designer.  Additionally, the file location where I exported from SharePoint and importing back into SharePoint is not changing, nor is the file name.
    2. If I create a workflow from scratch within Visio utilizing the SharePoint 2010 shapes, I'm about to export without a problem and save as a .vwi file.  I'm also able to import this workflow into SharePoint Designer, but the problem is the workflow
never actually shows up and I do not receive any errors.
Any help on either or both of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Use Visio 2010. You may be running into a compatibility issue between Visio 2013 and Designer 2010.

    Hi,
As I understand, when you published the workflow in SharePoint Designer you encountered the error.
I suggest you follow the steps below to troubleshoot this issue:
    1. You could check if the App Management Service is started.  (Go to CA -> System Settings -> Services on server -> check if the App Management Service is started.) If not, start the App Management Service, then perform iisreset.
    2. If the issue still exists, you could click start->click “run”->type in “services.msc” ->restart "SharePoint Search Host Service". This is because there is not enough space to start the service. Note that the "SharePoint Search
Host Service" consumes a lot of memory.

  • Error while saving a workflow via sharepoint designer: Server-side activities have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.

While saving a workflow using SharePoint designer on a SharePoint site, I get the following error:
Server-side activities have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.
    Steps to recreate error:
Login to the WFE server hosting IIS and workflow manager, open SharePoint Designer 2013 and login to a SharePoint site.
Access the list using SharePoint Designer 2013, in the workflow section, click new workflow.
In the new workflow dialog, enter workflow details, click save (see screenshot below).
Error message is displayed as below:
After restarting SharePoint Designer, the saved workflow is not seen in the site/workflows or list/workflow section.
    Workaround
When the above steps are repeated while accessing the site via SPD from any other box besides the WFE/Workflow manager host server, the error is not encountered and its possible to save/publish workflows.
    Notes
    Workflow Manager 1.0 is installed.
The site has been registered with Workflow manager using Register-SPWorkflowService
    cmdlet.
Any clue on why is this happening?

    Hello, Oscar,
This message can mean several things.
First, are you burning an iMovie or a slideshow or both?
Do you have chapter markers in your movie? Are they on or withing 2 seconds of any transition or at the beginning of your movie?
    Does everything encode properly?
Are you able to 'save as disk image'?
Post back with some more details about your project.

  • CS4:  "Critical errors were found in setup. Please see the setup log for details" !!

I am using Win XP Pro SP3. I have CS3 installed, and successfully installed Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash from CS4 Design Premium. Then I successfully uninstalled DW, FW and FL CS3.
When I tried to open a SWF in Illustrator it failed to open, and then I tried to create a really simple SWF (a rectangle) by exporting from Illustrator and tried to open that and it also failed. Whenever I tried to open or place ANY SWF into Illustrator I get a "file *** is in an unknown format and cannot be opened" error.
I decided there must be a corrupt file, maybe the upgrade must have affected some Illustrator files, so I tried to repair the CS3 installation. After over 2 hours of INTENSE FRUSTRATION having to constantly switch CS3 and CS4 disks many MANY times, the installation failed, listing "common files" that were missing from non-existent folders such as "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Desktop\Adobe CS4\Fireworks CS4\payloads\etc
When I tried to repair the CS4 installation after loading all the profile settings it errors before the installation window comes up, with "Critical errors were found in setup. Please see the setup log for details". Then it shuts down the installer. I then tried to do a system restore and system restore failed on all restore points!
    Please help:
    1. Where is "the setup log"?
    2. Will creating and populating the folders mentioned in the failed CS3 installation from the CS4 disk allow it to work?
    3. How can I uninstall CS4 if I can't even get to the installation window?
    4. Has Adobe just DESTROYED MY REGISTRY BEYOND REPAIR!!!???

im haveing a huge irritation useing illustrator cs4 live paint bucket because i can use everything else apart from the paint bucket which should be the easyiest tool to use sometimes it works with the white arrow sometimes it doesnt i sometimes get this below message
the selection contains objects that cannot be converted. live paint groups can only contain paths and compound paths. clipping paths are not allowed
the lines which i have drawn are connected which i believe have to be in order to use the paint bucket and i have no clipping paths so i am am baffled
i presume it is because the line is set to 0.01 it seems the live paint bucket wont notice thin lines, but i tried makeing the line thicker so i could use the paint bucket and it still doesnt work.

  • Critical Errors Were Found - Problems with Installation

I am encountering some problems while trying to install Adobe Captivate 4, particularly this error:
    Windows Internet Explorer:
Critical errors were found in setup.  Please see the Setup log file for details.
I originally downloaded the installation package from the Adobe website but upon receiving the error, I downloaded it from another source still to receive the same error.
After some digging around, I have uninstalled ALL adobe products and deleted every Adobe folder I could find.  Short of poking around in the registry (although I have run a registry cleaner utility), I don't know what to do.  This is what happens:
I double-click the installation package, it proceeds to extract files (I have tried extracting to Desktop and in C: Program Files).
    Preparing Files Window:
Please wait while the downloaded files are being extracted.
    Installer: Initializing Window:
    Checking System Profile...
    Loading Setup Window:
Loading Setup, then the error appears
    Windows Internet Explorer:
Critical errors were found in setup.  Please see the Setup log file for details.
Please help.  I really don't want to reinstall Windows or reimage or anything.  This is a piece of software from a major company and there should be some sort of solid fix for this that a computer illiterate person can follow.
PS. The Machine I'm trying to install it on is a tablet, running Windows XP tablet edition with SP3.

    Hi there
This sounds like something got lost in translation when you downloaded. Similar to the old SciFi movie where the guy ends up with a Fly Head and vice versa.
If you are using Internet Explorer to download the files, I believe IE may have difficulty at times cleanly downloading. You may wish to try installing Firefox and using it to download the file. See if that gets you a cleaner download to use.

What does this mean and how do I fix it: "The following warnings and errors were found during the validation of the current project:  - There appears to be a broken asset in your project. Correct this problem before burning this project."

It means that iDVD has found a problem with one of the movies added to the project.  Did you edit the movie after it had been added to the project.
Create a new project and add your assets, movies, slides, etc. again and follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
